"I can’t live as trash forever."

The Protagonist. A Korean who after falling asleep reading a novel series he came across by chance called The Birth of a Hero woke up in the body of the story's first minor antagonist, Cale Henituse. While something of a misanthrope whose life dream is becoming a rich slacker, he in fact has a strong moral center and cares about others more than he likes to admit.

Later in the story, it's revealed that Cale is in fact from an Urban Fantasy version of Korea with superpowers and invasions by monsters from another dimension, who had ended up the Sole Survivor of at least two cataclysmic events. This led to both his stand-offish nature and deep empathy underneath it all. He also has a unique though mundane ability of his own, [Record], which grants him a perfect Photographic Memory.

  • Ambiguous Situation: How exactly he was sent into the world of The Birth of a Hero, what happened to his original body (Did he die? Did he and the original Cale switch places? Or something else?), and basically everything else about his situation as a transmigrator is unknown to both him and the readers. He takes it in stride.
    • Until you reach the 600+ chapters. That is when it was explained that the original Cale had at age forty made a deal with the God of Death to go back in time and switch bodies with Kim Rock Soo so that he can be with his reincarnated mother.
  • Barrier Warrior: Cale was this for a while since he was hiding his other abilities and tried to get involved in as little actual fighting as possible.
  • Berserk Button: You treat a child wrong and Cale will come after you.
  • Big Brother Worship: Is on the receiving end by both of his younger siblings, though he's oblivious to it.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Prince Alberu; they're both schemers with goals that are ultimately for the betterment of their kingdom (though Cale's reasons are a little more self-centered than Alberu's). They work together and become friends as the story goes on.
  • Catchphrase: "This is driving me nuts."
    • Phrase Catcher: Alberu also often ends up saying some variation of "This guy's driving me nuts" whenever Cale tells him something he thinks is absurd.
  • Celibate Hero: Never expresses any romantic or sexual interest in any other character.
  • The Chessmaster: When he isn't being an Opportunistic Bastard. Becomes more opportunistic and less chessmaster as the story goes on.
  • Compelling Voice: The effect of the Dominating Aura ancient power, which basically makes everyone so intimidated that they have to listen.
  • Consummate Liar: Has no issues spouting Blatant Lies.
  • Differently Powered Individual:
    • He gains a couple of ancient powers so he has a fighting chance of survival if he ever gets caught up in conflict. For various reasons, he eventually gets more than he originally planned. They can only be gained by passing certain, extremely specific requirements and normally require a great amount of luck to even find, though Cale knows exactly how to get them from reading the novels.
    • Kim Rok Soo comes from a "Fusion Fantasy" type world popular in Korean Web Novels and Webtoons, where "ability users" started to awaken and monsters overran the world. At least one of Kim Rok Soo's abilities, Photographic Memory, was brought with him to the world of The Birth of a Hero.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Doesn't like sour foods, a trait that he shares with the original Cale, particulary lemonade. Ron serves him lemonade as a passive aggresive move, and Cale is too terrified of him to refuse. Which means Ron keeps serving him lemonade, which makes other people assume he likes lemonade a lot, which means he keeps getting served lemonade.
  • Elemental Powers: Decides from the beginning to gather a few ancient powers as a way to defend himself, some of which are elemental in nature. For various reasons he eventually gets more:
  • Embarrassing Nickname: "Young Master Silver Shield" and "Young Master Silver Light".
  • Evil Redhead: The original Cale was this. The current Cale's enemies think of him as this.
  • The Fettered: An interesting version of this trope. He has no problem manipulating even good authority figures like Alberu to get what he wants or outright stealing from people, and enjoys the thought of making the bad guys suffer painfully for weeks on end before dying for what they've done. However, he has a sense of common human decency, always makes sure to show his appreciation for other people's efforts, and will go out of his way to make sure innocent people don't get caught up in fighting and always go for the solution that benefits the most people even if it's the hardest outcome to reach. See also Berserk Button and Tsundere.
  • Good Is Not Nice: See The Fettered above.
  • Failure Hero: The death of his friends back in Korea seem to inform his Heroic Self-Deprecation.
  • Healing Factor: Thanks to the Vitality of the Heart he doesn't need a lot of sleep, and he quickly heals from any injury. It has its limits, however.
  • Heroic RRoD: Cale's body is hurt whenever he overuses his ancient powers, but thanks to the Vitality of the Heart ancient power he heals up instantly (though only after coughing up blood once).
    • It turns out that having powers of different elements throws off the balance of powers in his body and is slowly tearing it apart. The Vitality of the Heart is the only thing keeping him from dying instantly, but it's only a temporary solution. Cale ends up needing to gain an ancient power of each element and balance out in order to stay alive.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Both in the narration and out loud, he always insists that he's selfish and that he isn't a hero. It seems to be how he legitimately views himself, even though his strong moral compass says otherwise.
  • Hey, You!: Is on the receiving end, courtesy of Raon; Raon refers to him simply as "human" at first because he was wary of Cale and didn't plan on sticking around him long enough to need to know his name. Raon continues to call him "human" even after he starts using other people's names and refers to Cale as "the human" when talking about him with other people. It comes off as an Insult of Endearment.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Desperately tries to avoid the spotlight so that he can become a slacker later in life. He fails.
  • The Leader
  • Long Haired Prettyboy: Cale's good looks are mentioned at several points, and his hair grows out to at least his shoulders over the course of the story (though he later has his hair cut short again).
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: The Indestructible Shield ancient power becomes Cale's signature power. It actually starts out pretty weak, but the ability to change its size, the ability to send it out at various distances away from him, and the fact that if it breaks he can always use it again after resting for some time makes it extremely useful. Raon usually ends up covering for Cale with his own magical shields instead, however.
  • Manipulative Bastard:
  • Media Transmigration: Kim Rok Soo has just started reading The Birth of a Hero, a fantasy series about a Korean teenager named Choi Han who gets transported to a fantasy world and gets five volumes in the series before falling asleep. He then awakes up in the body of a minor antagonist from the first novel, Cale, who is known as the trash of the count's family because of his tendency to get drunk and hurl bottles at anyone nearby, as well as treating those of lower status like they aren't people. And he's just days away from when this character is beaten to a bloody pulp by Choi Han. It's not clear what happened to the original Cale, but Kim Rok Soo controls his body now.
  • Mysterious Past: Unlike protagonists in similar stories, his background is only hinted at. No real details are given until almost 300 chapters into the story. And they turn out to be important details indeed, and explain Cale's previously inexplicable abilities and reactions that normal people wouldn't have.
  • The Nicknamer: Seems to mostly keep the nicknames in his head, so while we see it a lot in the narration he doesn't actually call people by the nicknames he gives them out loud. He sometimes slips up though.
  • Not Quite Flight: He can use The Sound of Wind to fly.
  • Older Than They Look: His physical body is 18 at the start of the series, but his mental age is in his 30s (probably).
  • Opportunistic Bastard: When he isn't being The Chessmaster. Becomes more opportunistic and less chessmaster as the story goes on.
  • Pet the Dog: The first indication that he isn't as cold as he pretends to be is when he feeds On and Hong. He's noticeably kind to children throughout the series.
  • Photographic Memory: It's declared in one of the first chapters that he remembers everything in The Birth of a Hero and soon proves that he remembers every little detail. He also seems to be able to recall the exact wording of any conversation he has. He mentions that as long as he's interested in something he'll remember everything about it.
    • It turns out to be the result of his ability, Record.
  • Red-Headed Stepchild: Subverted. Even the original!Cale had a mostly neutral relationship with his step-mother and half-siblings; despite his attitude, he apparently didn't give them a lot of trouble personally, and they just didn't know what to do with him. Any scorn he received from others was the result of his own actions. KimRokSoo!Cale has a much better relationship with the Henituses.
  • Skewed Priorities: Occasionally. Usually manifests itself in the form of thinking about unrelated things in the midst of an important mission or battle.
  • The Slacker: Subverted; he wants to be this, but finds that he has to work hard at the present in order to get there. It's also implied that he can't help but get involved with other people's business even if he doesn't want to. He slacks off whenever he has time to, however.
Lee Soo Hyuk: We need to take you with us. If we don't, forget being a slacker, you're the type that would go around causing trouble.
  • The Smart Guy: Serves as this as well as The Leader, depending on the need. It was also his role in his squad back in Korea.
  • The Strategist: His expertise.
  • Supernatural Fear Inducer: Another effect of the Dominating Aura, which can make people extremely afraid of or intimidated by the user.
  • Troll: Towards his enemies.
  • Tsundere: To what degree is debatable. He's not at the level of All-Loving Hero, but he cares more than he admits to himself. A more literal example is when he tells the Sky-Eating Water her name was so-so while privately thinking it was pretty cool. Choi Jung Soo calls him a shy boy.
  • Vague Age: His age before he was transported. A later chapter, two years after the start of the story, says that he'd be around 36.

     Other Main Characters

Choi Han

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/816f7230_4135_4676_bbb6_16a73938bb71.jpeg

The Protagonist of the novel The Birth of a Hero. An Ordinary High-School Student from Korea who was transported into another world. In the original story, he is first motivated by revenge and learns to become a hero as his journey goes on. He chooses to follow Cale in this story after Cale helps him out.

  • Character Development: The Birth of a Hero follows his development from a traumatized Ice King hellbent on revenge into a true hero. That's going on in this story too, but in different ways.
  • Differently Powered Individual: Has the ability to use auras, making him a swordmaster.
  • The Dreaded: Choi Han beats Cale to a bloody pulp in the original story; even though our current Cale doesn't do anything that Choi Han would beat him up for and is in fact greatly admired by Choi Han, Cale seems oblivious to this and still fears the idea of getting beat up by him. When Choi Han declares that he needs to get stronger (so he can help Cale), Cale is extremely uncomfortable at the thought of Choi Han getting any stronger than he is.
  • Doomed Hometown: Played with, because Harris Village was neither his hometown nor his starting location. It was the first town he went to after he escaped the Forest of Darkness, he stayed there and made it into his new home, and it plays the role of "town gets destroyed to motivate protagonist to journey", so the trope fits.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Comes off as this because of his No Social Skills and ruthlessness.
  • Elemental Powers: Has a "dark" aura, though it's not clear if it's Casting a Shadow or something else...
  • Full-Name Basis: It makes since for the people of The Birth of a Hero to always call him by his full name, since they wouldn't be familiar with Korean names or Korean naming conventions, but Cale and the narration also always refer to him as "Choi Han".
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Spending decades in the Forest of Darkness with only bloodthirsty monsters for company does things to a person.
  • Good Is Not Nice: He has no issues killing people if they deserve it and he's absolutely determined to kill the organization who massacred his village but still strives to help people whenever he can.
  • Heir to the Dojo: His family kept an ancient martial art alive, and he was the latest in line to be trained in it. This is how he learned to use a sword.
  • Hereditary Curse: Possibly.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Of course, his go-to weapons are going to be swords considering he's a Master Swordsman.
  • The Lancer: To Cale's leader.
  • The Leader: In The Birth of a Hero, but not in this story. That particular role was taken by Cale.
  • Long-Lived: Is said to have gained a lifespan like a dragon after being transported, or he'll probably live to be about 1000.
  • Master Swordsman: A swordmaster (aka: a person who is capable of using auras) and one of the best swordsmen in the series, well on the way to becoming the best.
  • Mysterious Past: To everyone else except Cale and the audience.
  • No Social Skills: Spending decades in the Forest of Darkness and the trauma of witnessing the destruction of his new home after he finally escaped did things to Choi Han. It's also noted that he acts friendlier when he's around Cale but is more stoic and brusque when he's not, which isn't doing him any favors.
  • Older Than They Look: His exact age is unknown, but it's stated that he lived for literal decades in the Forest of Darkness before escaping. He still looks 17. It's said that, as a reincarnated person/person who was transported into this world, he's ended up with slowed aging and a lifespan like a dragon, which means he'll probably live to be about 1000.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: He started out this way at least.
  • Vague Age: Much older than 17, but just how many decades older isn't clear.

The Black Dragon/Raon Miru

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b6f13d5b_d9f3_43ee_8dbb_aab8275c187e.jpeg

"I truly am the great and mighty Raon Miru, and I am six years old! I am great and mighty!"

A black dragon that's only four years old at the start of the series. Is captured, driven to insanity, and finally killed by Choi Han after destroying a village in the original novel. Cale and co. manage to rescue him before it comes to that. While Cale initially doesn't want anything else to do with him, the dragon follows Cale anyway.

  • Adorably Precocious Child: Raon might be a powerful dragon, he is still a 4 year old dragon with a child-like temperament with much to shoulder and learn about his powers and the world around him.
  • Anger Born of Worry: When Cale inevitably faints or shows signs of injury Raon will often threaten him with a mass destruction event.
Raon: Weak human, you cannot die! You are too weak! If you die, I will destroy everything! I will kill everyone, destroy everything, and once everything is gone, including your corpse, I will kill myself as well!
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Played with. He's a dragon, which means that he's one of the most powerful beings on the planet and is much more intelligent and wise than his age would suggest. People who don't know him and elves treat him with reverence. Cale and co., while recognizing his intelligence and ability, still tend to treat him like the child he is. For example On, who's ten, acts as his older sister and affectionately refers to Raon as "their youngest".
  • Barrier Warrior: Because Cale wants him to stay hidden, and because he doesn't care about people outside their group for a while there, Raon stays hidden, uses barriers, and makes it seem like Cale's Indestructible Shield is stronger than it is instead of actively fighting.
  • Catchphrase: Frequently proclaims that he is "great and mighty" to anyone who will listen.
  • Bizarro Elements: "The present". Even he doesn't know what that means.
  • Child Prodigy: As we come to find out when he trained under Eruhaben, the lessons were suppose to last about three months but instead he learned everything in a matter of a few weeks.
  • Hey, You!: Raon refers to Cale simply as "human" at first because he was wary of Cale and didn't plan on sticking around him long enough to need to know his name. Raon continues to call him "human" even after he starts using other people's names and refers to Cale as "the human" when talking about him with other people. It comes off as an Insult of Endearment.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: They reflect on Raon's young age.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Raon begins to pick up some of Cale's traits throughout the series, including his fondness for scamming and looting.
  • Meaningful Name: Cale names him Raon Miru, which means "joyful dragon" in Korean (when Choi Han recognizes it as Korean, Cale makes up an excuse that he read it in a book somewhere).
  • Mouthy Kid: Raon maybe young with a temperament to match but he is also willing to call out on others from time to time, such as when he tells Cale that scamming is bad when Cale ponders on using his newly obtained ancient power from the dead dragon in the Dark Forest (Before his Character Development over the course of the story). He is mostly treated as the little brother and youngest child by Cale, On and Hong, Choi Han and more of Cale's allies who know of him and they treat him well.
  • Never Given a Name: Hatched a prisoner, he was never given a name by his captors. Cale says he should choose a name for himself, but he tells Cale to name him instead, to which Cale eventually relents and names him Raon.
  • Secret-Keeper: He's the only person to know that Cale didn't happen upon his ancient powers by accident and, until Cale reveals them, the only one to know just how many he had.
  • Shoulder-Sized Dragon: At first, though he grows as he gets older. Not that you could actually carry him on your shoulders because he's much heavier than he looks.
  • Telepathy: He uses magic to communicate with Cale and others this way swhen he needs to stay hidden or needs to say something that others can't hear. It doesn't work in both directions, so whoever he's communicating with isn't able to respond.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Apple pie.

Ron Molan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1688273c_01fd_47a8_a44e_50dbf7734644.png

Head butler of the Henituse family and Beacrox's father. In the original story, he strongly dislikes Cale and doesn't hesitate to leave the Henituse household and and follow his son to join Choi Han on his journey. Seeing interesting changes in his charge in this story keeps him by Cale's side.

He originally hides his incredible fighting skills and his past as an assassin, but Cale is aware of this because it's mentioned in The Birth of a Hero.

  • Action Dad: An assassin since before his son was even born. The son in question is now an adult of about 30, but it still applies.
  • An Arm and a Leg: He loses his arm while investigating Arm. However, later he gets another made for him cursory of Mary, a Necromancer as a favor for letting her stay at Cale's mansion for six months.
  • Battle Butler: Head butler of the Henituse household as well as a skilled fighter and assassin.
  • Cool Old Guy: An assassin who's old enough to be a grandpa.
  • The Don: His Mysterious Past.
  • The Dreaded: Ron is this for Cale, because Cale is super aware of the fact that Ron is a cold-blooded killer who doesn't like Cale very much and abandons him in the original novel and could kill him easily.
  • Like a Son to Me: He stuck around because he had some affection for the original Cale, but takes this attitude towards Cale more as time goes on, due to Cale's miraculous turnaround in personality. Cale is oblivious to this and remains convinced that Ron hates him for the better part of the story.
  • Mysterious Past: Notably, Cale doesn't know much about him because his past had yet to be explained where he left off in The Birth of a Hero. Nobody else (aside from Beacrox) knows about his past either.
  • The Patriarch: Of the Molan assassin family.
  • Professional Killer: His previous career before joining the Henituse household.
  • Servile Snarker: He's more serious and more subtle than the likes of Hans, but he still gets his jabs in.

Beacrox Molan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4278bd5e_b5cf_4317_8d14_18805c03d86f.png

Ron's adult son and head chef of the Henituse household. He hides incredible Torture Technician skills and ability to use a greatsword. He originally strongly dislikes Cale, and in The Birth of a Hero leaves the Henutise household joins Choi Han's journey because he admires his swordsmanship.

  • Chef of Iron: The head chef of the Henituse household as well as a skilled swordsman and torture expert.
  • It's Personal: He did not take ARM cutting off his dad's arm and almost killing him very well whatsoever. He has a serious grudge against them because of that and takes extreme delight in getting revenge against the organization because if it.
  • Master Swordsman: Not a swordmaster like Choi Han, but very skilled with a greatsword nonetheless.
  • Missing Mom: She died during the attack on the Molan estate, of which Ron and Beacrox were the only survivors.
  • Neat Freak: Has some elements of this. He likes his kitchen neat and tidy, and in a later chapter becomes absolutely furious when other people attempt to cook and make a mess. He also wears multiple pairs of gloves at once when fighting or torturing someone in order to protect his hands. If he puts on three or four pairs of gloves at the same time, it means that he's expecting a lot of bloodshed.
  • Supreme Chef: His cooking never fails to please.
  • Torture Technician: Cale uses his talents partially for getting information from their enemies, but mostly just to make people who made his allies hurt suffer for their deeds.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The greatsword he uses belonged to his mother before she was killed.

On and Hong

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/on_and_hong.png
On (Left) and Hong (Right)
Click here to see their human forms

Two homeless orphans that Cale gives some bread to. They turn out to be Cat Beastmen. They briefly appear as a couple of stray cats that Choi Han shows kindness to in the novels but don't otherwise play a role in the original novels (as far as Kim Rok Soo had read, at least).

On is the older sister, Hong is the younger brother.

  • Cat Ninja: They do a lot of the more sneaky tasks for Cale instead of directly fighting while also being cats. It seems to be the signature of the Cat Beastmen tribe.
  • Cute Kitten: They invoke this imagery, especially around Hans.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: They were kicked out of their clan and forced to fend for themselves on the streets.
  • Happily Adopted: They were happy to stay with Cale and look up to Cale as an old mentor and family figure.
  • Little Miss Badass: Even for a Fog Cat Tribe member, On is extremely powerful.
  • Meaningful Name: On (silver) and Hong (red) reflect the color of their hair/fur in Chinese.
  • Poisonous Person: Hong's ability, which enables him to increase his strength by consuming different poisons. He has eaten poison from the Poisonous Snow Storm in the Valley of Despair and from the poisonous plants in the Forest of Darkness.
  • Super Power Lottery: Both of the them can count for this due to their rare abilities but On even more so. It's been mentioned that finding a Cat Beastman with On's fog ability is extremely rare, even rarer then there are Dragons in that world and there are only around 20 of them currently.
  • Super Smoke: On's "fog" ability. Combined with Hong's, they can create a poison fog that paralyses anyone who breathes it in.
  • Those Two Guys: Very rarely seen apart.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Both are more than happy to help Cale with more dangerous missions, and are shown to be enthusiastic about the thought of severely injuring their enemies. It's probably a result of their upbringing.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Are Cat Beastmen. Notably, they stay in cat form most of the time.

Rosalyn

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eb626fc9_2c69_4481_a78c_3ddf59e86845.jpeg

A mage from the Breck Kingdom, she's actually their princess in disguise. Passing though the Roan Kingdom on the way to the Magic Tower in the Whipper Kingdom, she gets caught up with Choi Han in both the original story and in this story. This time around, Cale directs Choi Han so he'll purposefully run into her.

She eventually gives up her royal title so she can have more freedom to do what she wants, namely helping Cale.

Lock

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/33c7c612_f662_4358_9953_f2f39004fbb2.jpeg

A young Beastman from the Blue Wolf tribe, he's only a young teen when his tribe is nearly wiped out by ARM.

In The Birth of a Hero he is the lone survivor, but with Cale's direction, Choi Han and Rosalyn make it in time to save many other young Wolves besides him. It's also when he's poisoned by Mermaids in the original story that Rosalyn discovers the antidote to their poison, knowledge which Cale uses to cure Paseton.

  • The Baby of the Bunch: In the original story. Now he's the oldest of multiple children in the group, and he also unlocks is berserk transformation earlier than in the original book, making him less of a load than he was in the original story.
  • The Big Guy: His role in fights.
  • Healing Factor: Wolf Beastmen have some regenerative ability and heal faster than humans would.
  • Kid-Appeal Character: Kim Rok Soo thinks that this was his role in the original novel. Less so in this story.
  • The Load: For a long time in The Birth of a Hero, which is why a lot of T Bo H readers were so annoyed with him in the early book. He gets more character development much more quickly with Cale's intervention.
  • Our Werewolves Are Different: Can transform between human and wolf forms at will; like all Beastmen, he also has a berserk transformation that makes him much stronger.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Heir to the Blue Wolf Tribe and its leader after the death of his family.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: As a Wolf Beastman.

Prince Alberu Crossman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alberu_crossman.jpg

The first Prince of the Roan Kingdom. As the least-favored prince, his position and his life are in constant danger. Uses his glib tongue to manipulate Choi Han into working for him in the original novel. While he ultimately has Choi Han do only heroic deeds that would help the Kingdom, it rubs Cale the wrong way that it's ultimately to solidify his own position. In this story, he and Cale somehow become good friends.

  • Big Good: Is the highest ranking person from the Roan Kingdom, and acts the main organizer of the alliance that they build up over time.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Cale; they're both schemers with goals that are ultimately for the betterment of their kingdom (though Cale's reasons are a little more self-centered than Alberu's). They work together and become friends as the story goes on.
  • The Gadfly: Loves embarrassing and frustrating Cale. He also seems to enjoy manipulating people more than he should.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Sports the golden blonde hair indicative of the Roan royal family.
  • Healing Hands: Holds a one-time-use ancient power that can completely heal a person. He doesn't use it in The Birth of a Hero (at least up to the point that Kim Rok Soo had read to).
    • Cale, knowing that he has this power, guides Taylor Stan to make a deal with Alberu. He uses his power to heal Taylor's injuries in exchange for information and political support.
  • King Incognito: He goes out without his disguise to meet up with Cale and see the action for himself on several occaisions.
  • Occult Blue Eyes: Blue eyes, along with gold hair, are a sign of the Sun God's blessing which runs in the Roan royal family. They turn out to be colored unnaturally by a magic device which changes Alberu's appearance.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Mostly a Non-Action Guy who gets stuff done though political maneuvering. He isn't afraid to go out without his disguise to get a view of the action first hand. He also can fight rather well, based off of his battle with the The White Star.
  • Uneven Hybrid: A fourth Dark Elf from his mother's side.
  • The Unfavorite: Of the three Roan Kingdom princes. He's the oldest child of the king but is the least liked, and he's the prince with the least political support. He works to change this.
  • The Wise Prince: Despite having the least political clout, he's quite the Schemer, and genuinely wants what's best for his kingdom. Even Cale eventually approves of him when he acknowledges his diligence and hardwork towards the kingdom.
  • Non-Action Guy: He is a very good politician. He is revealed to be a subversion later as he is a high grade mage and highest grade swordsman. The White Star labels him a very a annoying enemy due to the prince being a well balanced fighter, which differs from how other members of the alliance are focused on strength in one particular area, eg. magic or ancient powers or swords.

Basen

Count Deruth Henituse, Countess Violan, and their children: (original) Cale, Basen, and Lily. Their territory lies in the northeast region of the Roan Kingdom.

Alberu eventually bestows the title of "Duke" to Deruth, making him the most powerful noble in his region and giving the Henituse family, and Cale by extension, more clout in the Roan Kingdom's political sphere.

For tropes specific to the current Cale, see his entry above.

  • The Alcoholic: Cale is said to have become an alcoholic when he as 14.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Whatever happened to the consciousness of the original Cale after Kim Rok Soo took over his body.
  • Artists Are Attractive: The Count apparently met Violan through her artwork.
  • Big Brother Worship: Basen and Lily towards (KimRokSoo)Cale eventually, though he remains oblivious to it.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Cale doesn't like sour foods, a trait shared with Kim Rok Soo. Ron, who dislikes Cale, ends up serving "Cale" (actually Kim Rok Soo) lemonade in a passive aggressive move as a result.
  • Evil Redhead: The original Cale was this.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar: Teen Genius Basen.
  • Good Parents: Deruth cared deeply for his son even though he was a Jerkass before Kim Rok Soo reincarnated into him. Countess Violan, while Cale's stepmother, is also shown to care for him as her own son. They are both also good rulers who want to do what's best for the people of their territory.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: The original Cale. Basen is set to inherit instead.
  • Informed Ability: Everyone in the Henituse family is required to have training in martial arts, but we don't see them use them. Neither the original Cale nor Basen are fighters, and while Deruth is supposedly more capable and Lily is more naturally inclined toward it, we have yet to actually see them fight.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Lily wants to be this and goes as far as to start practicing swordsmanship as soon as she realizes that's her dream.
  • Missing Mom: Cale's biological mother died when he was young. That's basically all we know about her, though some vague Foreshadowing suggests she might have a Small Role, Big Impact.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: The Count and Countess.
  • Second Love: Violan is Deruth's second wife after is first wife died.
  • Tomboy: Lily definitely counts as one considering she's practicing to be a swordsman at the age of seven and is considered to be more gifted at it then her brother.

Deputy Butler Hans

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/6525e3be_db3b_427b_9553_32501ed7c720.png

A butler in the Henituse household, he's second-in-command after Ron and runs the show when Ron isn't around. He also ends up traveling with Cale to the Capital and around the Roan Kingdom.

Vice Captain Hilsman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/41997f32_d69d_4a82_b3a4_1a7965d9e563.png

The Vice captain of the guard of the Henituse estate. For completely understandable reasons he strongly dislikes Cale, though he slowly comes to approve of Kim Rok Soo/Cale.

  • Badass Normal: Despite not having as impressive swordman skills like Choi Han or any fantasy-esque ablilities, he's an formidable fighter who relys purely on hardwork and earned the Vice captain rank because of that.
  • Master Swordsman: He's overshadowed by the likes of Choi Han and other swordmasters but still a great swordsman.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: His sword skills are overshadowed by the swordmasters of teh series like Choi Han.

Billos

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3731ed0d_72e8_4308_b7b5_3301440bb789.png

A merchant who runs a small tea shop, he's much more wealthy and has more connections than his storefront would suggest. He's a Chekhov's Gunman in The Birth of a Hero, who briefly runs into Choi Han in the first book before returning in a later book to help him out. Cale, who knows this, makes a deal with him much earlier to help secure resources.

Taylor Stan and Cage

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5fd4ec4f_3617_409e_8584_970c2b40025b.png
Taylor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cca4731b_3faa_4498_8bb8_6625584d710f.png
Cage

The son of a corrupt Marquis and his Nun Too Holy best friend. After an attempt on his life, orchestrated by his own brother, left Taylor paralyzed, he sets out on a journey with Cage to find an ancient power that could heal him. His efforts are fruitless in the original novel, but the information he finds leads Cale to finding an important ancient power. The God of Death communicates with Cage through dreams and visions, and in our story directs the two toward Cale.

  • Ambiguously Gay: Taylor, if only because no one's sexuality in the series has been confirmed one way or another. Having a close but strictly platonic relationship with Cage isn't suspicious on its own. Things start to get questionable when, after Cage hits on Cale and is rebuffed, Taylor hits on him instead (though he could be joking).
Cage: Young master Cale, do you not have any desire to get to know an older sister with a great personality?
    Cale: Nope.
Taylor …What about an older brother with a great personality?
    Cale: Even less.
  • Badass Preacher: Even after leaving the church, Cage still qualifies as a person favored by the God of Death who receives his messages.
  • Birds of a Feather: Cage hits it off with Tasha almost immediately.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar: Taylor spends a lot of time studying ancient texts.
  • Healing Factor: In the original novel, Taylor gains the Vitality of the Heart. Unfortunately, the ancient power can't heal damage that's already been done, and his condition was already so bad that he eventually died. Cale helps him avoid dying this time, however.
  • Nun Too Holy: Cage. She even gets excommunicated for it, not that the God of Death cares about that.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With each other.
  • Those Two Guys: Rarely seen apart.

Amira Ubarr

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amiru_ch48_2.jpg

Daughter of the Viscountess of the Ubarr territory and her heir. She helps establish a navy for the Roan Kingdom.

Odeus Flynn

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/odeus_ch50.png

Billos' uncle and the brother of the current head of the Flynn Merchant guild. He controls most of the underworld of the Roan Kingdom's northwest region, though some of his business is legitimate.

  • Cool Uncle: Has helped out Billos and treats him as a family member when the rest of the family shuns him for being a bastard.

The Wolf Children

The children of the Blue Wolf Tribe. Along with Lock, they are the only survivors of the massacre that nearly wiped the tribe out. Cale sets them up in Harris Village after it's rebuilt.

Maes, the oldest of the children, acts as the leader of the group.

Gashan

An old Shaman and Chief the Tiger Tribe. He's a white tiger, and he has the ability to control crows for use as messengers or spies.

Cale lets him and the other Tigers make their home in Harris Village after their own village is destroyed.

     The Whale Tribe
A tribe of Whale Beastmen. While the members of the tribe are few in number, they are the most powerful of the Beastmen and control the most territory. They command the Northern Seas and are at odds with the Mermaids.

Whale King Shickler

The King of the Whales.

Witira

A humpback Whale Beastman and the heir to the Whale Tribe. In The Birth of a Hero, she teams up with Choi Han in Book 5, but here she meets Cale much sooner when he saves Paseton's life. She's one of the most powerful people in the story, though her abilities are limited by access to water.

Paseton

The half-human son of the Whale King and Witira's younger brother. In The Birth of a Hero he's a Posthumous Character, but when Cale runs into him on accident it's revealed that he was poisoned and killed by Mermaids. Using knowledge of the poison's antidote from the books, Cale is able to save his life.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Half-human, half-Whale Beastman, it's implied that he's often mocked or looked down on by some of the tribe due being weaker then the average Whale Beastman thanks to his human mother's blood. Despite this handicap, his family clearly loves him regardless of this fact.
  • Missing Mom: She's never mentioned at all in the story, despite that extremely notable position of being the human mother of a Half-Human Hybrid prince. Whales are known to be reclusive and hardly ever interact with humans, so it's unknown under what kind of circumstances she met the Whale King or what happened to her after Paseton was born.
  • Posthumous Character: In the original novel he dies from Mermaid poison after accidentally finding out the secret to their species gaining strength so quickly. Thankfully, with Cale's help he avoids it this time thanks to his knowlege of the cure to the their poison.
  • Unscaled Merfolk: As Whale Beastman.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: As Whale Beastman.

Archie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9f332f7a_079c_4351_8358_ebe7f96baeca.jpeg

A Killer Whale Beastman, he's The Lancer to the Whale King.

     The Dark Elf City
Known to its inhabitants as "The City of Life", this city lies beneath the Desert of Death.

Tasha

A Dark Elf who lives in the Roan Kingdom by using a disguise.

Mary

The only living necromancer. She's a human but grew up in the Dark Elf City after they rescued her from the Desert of Death. She's 25 years old when Cale first meets her.

Obante

The Mayor of the Dark Elf City. He's Tasha's grandfather and Alberu's great-grandfather.

Shawn

A Dark Elf who's a friend of Tasha's. He is one of the people sent to guide Cale and co. upon their arrival to the Dark Elf City.

     Elf Villages

Pendrick

An elf from the village hidden in the Ten Finger Mountains in the Roan Kingdom. He was a main character and part of Choi Han's party in The Birth of a Hero. Due to Cale's changing of events his role in the story is now much smaller, though he enlists Cale's help to save the village from Arm and is the one to introduce Cale to Eruhaben.

Jeet

The Guardian Knight of the elf village in the Ten Finger Mountains. He's described as being middle-aged in elf years.

Elf Chief Canaria

Chief of the elf village in the Ten Finger Mountains. She was a recurring character in The Birth of a Hero.

Adite

A priestess of the World Tree who lives in the Hidden Elf Village in the Lake of Despair.
  • High Priest: The head priestess in charge of taking care of and communicating with the World Tree.

The World Tree

Each elf village has one of its branches.

     Other Allies

Toonka

A barbarian-like character and the leader of the rebels in the Whipper Kingdom. He's the one to introduce the Wind ancient power in the original story, but Cale gets to it first here.
  • Anti-Magic: Magic doesn't effect him.
  • Barbarian Longhair: Described as having long brown hair that's "like a lion's mane".
  • The Berserker
  • Blood Knight: Wants to fight anyone and anything, whether it be Beastmen, boulders, or natural phenomenons like whirpools. In the The Birth of a Hero, he somehow succeeds going up against the latter two.
  • Character Development: When we first meet Toonka, he was a tyrant who only cared about killing mages and living as a Blood Knight. Later, down the road after he meets Cale he slowly starts to learn to care about his kingdom by making a point not to leave injuried people behind in battles and secretly allowing mages to work for him for the time being. Though, he's still a hardcore Blood Knight through and through.
  • Dumb Muscle: What he lacks in smarts he makes up for in is inhuman strength, however.
  • Elemental Powers: He's the one to gain the Sound of the Wind ancient power in the original novel. Because of Cale's interference, he doesn't have any elemental powers here.
  • Fantastic Racism: Is prejudiced against anyone who uses magic because he comes from a Magocracy where social class was based on magical ability, and people like him who were unable to use magic were treated as less than human. He does approve of certain magic-using indivduals after they selflessly help out his allies.
    • Notably, he and other people like him admire ancient powers because they technically aren't magic and draw their power from nature.
  • Frontline General: The leader of the Anti-Magical Faction who leaves the strategy to other people.
  • Made of Iron: He's incredibly tough, and has done things humans would normally be incapable of doing.
  • Mage Killer: Has killed many mages fighting the Whipper Kingdom's Magocracy.
  • Magically Inept Fighter: Is physically incapable of using magic.

Harol Kodiang

One of the founders of the rebels in the Whipper Kingdom. He's largely respected because of this and he's the Chief of the group, second in command only to Toonka. His final goal is to completely rid the world of magic.
  • Fantastic Racism: Harol's disgust and hatred of magic runs deeper then even Toonka and he's the leader of the Rebels. This is largely due to his secret heritage of being a bastard offspring of a mage and not being able to properly use magic.
  • Hypocrite: Despite his hatred and bitterness of mages, he's absolutely willing to secretly use them in order to achieve his own goals. Cale considers him a crazy Opportunistic Bastard because of this.
Harol: Sometimes you have to sacrifice the small stuff for the greater good. In order to get rid of all magic in the future, I need to use my enemies to my advantage as well.

The Gold Dragon/Eruhaben

An ancient, white gold-colored dragon. He's friendlier than most dragons and stays in contact with elves. Described in-story as being incredibly beautiful.

His lair is filled with gold and jewel-encrusted onjects made of gold, fitting for a gold dragon like himself.
  • Meaningful Name: His name probably comes from the German "erhaben", which means "sublime", "elevated", or "exalted".
  • Old Master: To Raon.
  • Really 700 Years Old: It's never really stated how old Eruhaben looks, but it most definitely isn't almost 1000 years old.
  • Sand Blaster: His power is "dust"; he can control dust and similar granules, or instantly turn things to dust.
  • Secretly Dying: He's shown to be ill when they first meet him, but the fact that he's dying isn't revealed for a while. The secret is revealed for Cale and co. when it's realized that dragons are only supposed to live for about 1000 years and he's almost to that point, but the state of his health is still kept on the down-low.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifter: Stays in a humanoid form most of the time. He usually looks like an Elf (though his eyes are still reptile-like), but he can make himself look more like a human when the situation calls for it. Cale and co. have yet to see his true dragon form.

Hannah and Jack

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/84c2b23c_ab4e_4632_9097_90397061e531.jpeg
Hannah

The Holy Maiden and Saint of the Church of the Son God, referred to in the narration as "the Sun God twins". They're being manipulated by the Church and Arm, but eventually join Cale's side.

Quenn Litana

The Queen of the Jungle Kingdom.

Prince Valentino

Prince of the Caro Kingdom and the close friend of Prince Adin. Well, that is until he discovered his friend was involved with ARM and swore to help put a stop to him.
  • It's Personal: It would be quite the Understatement to say he was pissed to hear Prince Adin was working with ARM, a criminal organization, and only pretending to be his friend the entire time. Let's just say, he was quite happy when Cale offered a chance to take revenge for all his deceit and treachery he pulled over the years.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: He brilliantly calls out the Bishop in front of everyone for not helping the Roan Kingdom during the time of the war. The only reason being the Henituse Territory decides to willingly work with Mary, the Necromancer and they refuse to turn her over to them even after everything she did to help in the war.

Sir Rex

A soldier of the Mogoru Empire who turns out to be a traitor for the resistance.
  • Our Werebeasts Are Different: He's a Cat shifter like On and Hong, but having grown up an orphan in the Mogoru Empire he knows nothing about his origins, the Cat Tribe, or anything about being a Beastman outside of transforming. He didn't even know what a berserk transformation was, which is something that all Beastmen are capable of.
  • Super Smoke: Possibly. Including On, other Cat Beastmen are shown to have "fog" abilities, making it possible that Rex does as well.
  • Unwitting Test Subject: One of many who suffered at the hands of the alchemists of the Empire.
  • Voice of the Resistance: Becomes the face and one of the leaders of La Résistance in the Empire.

Bud Illis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/40fc95b1_be91_4797_a113_b8bf1aa53f86.jpeg

The Mercenery King of the Eastern Continent and a huge lover of alcohol. He helps Cale out when trying to extend Eruhaben's lifespan and he quickly becomes a ally in helping defeat White Star.

  • Blow You Away: Has a wind element ancient power which is what attracted White Star to him in the first place.
  • Differently Powered Individual: A swordmaster and a holder of a wind ancient power.
  • Master Swordsman: A swordmaster who while he isn’t as strong as Choi Han, he did note that he was stronger then most swordsmen he's met over the years.

Princess Jopis

Technically the ex-princess of the Molden Kingdom, she was exiled by her sister.
  • Determinator: When it came to deciding who would be the next Queen, Elisneh was considered superior in every aspect and received the support of their maternal relatives, but Jopis still fought aggressively against her.

     Antagonists

Venion Stan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b4b29b4c_11a3_4155_848b_60dc4f440802.png

The son of a corrupt marquis in the Roan Kingdom. He was given Raon's egg by his father, and after it hatched, he made a habit of torturing Raon.

  • Aristocrats Are Evil: He crippled his own older brother Taylor, had an infant dragon tortured (while he watched and laughed and ate gourmet food, no less), and is generally quite an asshole.

Redika

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/redika.png

The "crazy blood-drinking mage", he's the first major antagonist in The Birth of a Hero. He orchestrated a terrorist attack in the Roan Kingdom's capital, but with his knowledge of what happens in the book Cale is able to stop it.

  • Blood Magic: His specialty.
  • Killed Off for Real
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He serves as a Starter Villain and introduction to Arm before being defeated. He's defeated pretty quick by Cale and co., though he lasts a little longer in The Birth of a Hero. After being ordered by the Dragon half-blood to get rid of Raon's egg, he decided to give it to Marquis Stan. This decision made a big impact on the story of The Birth of a Hero and a much, much bigger impact on this story.

The Magic Spearman

The Tamer/Ballad

  • Fluffy Tamer: A darker version of this. He's either able to make friends with animals and fight along side them or he's able to take away the animals will to make sure they fight along side them. The thing is when the animals will is taken away they can never get it back even if the Tamer tries to release them, they'll only go berserk untill they die. Guess what he tends to use the most?
  • Older Than They Look: He looks like he's 12 but appearances can be rather deceiving considering he's suppose to be a middle-aged man.

Guardian Knight Clopeh Sekka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e1eacc10_f4db_4f32_ade5_8599548f16eb.jpeg

Son of a Duke and head of the Wyvern Riders of the Paerun Kingdom, he sided with Arm as part of the Indomitable Alliance. His goal is to become a legendary figure, which he obsessively pursues regardless of morality. His true, more unhinged colors come out after being defeated by Cale.

  • Above Good and Evil: Cares more about creating a legend and becoming a historic, legendary figure than things like "right" or "wrong".
  • An Arm and a Leg: Loses both arms and both legs, which are replaced with arms and legs from corpses that will explode if he betrays Cale, courtesy of Mary.
  • Dragon Rider: Captain of the Wyvern Riders.
  • Light Is Not Good: Uses a white aura.
  • Living Legend: Part of his goal, he wants to become a legendary figure in life with a legacy that persists long after he's gone.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Is forced to help Cale's cause... until he realizes that Cale could become a legendary figure and that he could have a part in his story, making him more than happy to join him.
  • Mask of Sanity
  • Master Swordsman: A swordmaster.
  • Phrase Catcher: Tends to incite variations on "What's with this crazy guy?" or "What's up with this lunatic?"
  • Psycho Supporter: After losing to Cale, he enthusiastically supports Cale's actions as the making of a legend that he'd have a part in.
  • Red Baron: The Guardian Knight of the North.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: The symbol of his family is the white snake.
  • Yandere: Gets shades of this towards Cale; he believes that Cale's death would make for a better legend.
  • Walking Spoiler:
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Has the white hair that's the signiture of the Sekka faimily and the morality to match.

Syrem/The Fake Dragon Slayer

A person who was given the means to be a Dragon Slayer but isn't one by birth or natural ability, making him a Dragon Slayer in name only.

The Dragon Half-Blood

A half-human half-dragon hybrid who works under the white star. He turns out to be responsible for the deaths of multiple dragons.

He was created by replacing his human heart with that of a dragon's, specifically the heart of Raon's sibling.

Prince Adin

The Prince of the Mogoru Empire and was secretly one of the members of the Indomitable Alliance while working with ARM. Is stated to be 27 years old.
  • An Arm and a Leg: He loses his leg after it was cut off by Choi Han in the war when trying to teloport away. He sort of ends up replacing it with dead mana after consuming Liquid Despair.
  • The Evil Prince: Doesn't care a lick for the people in his kingdom (or anyone really) and he has no problem teaming up the Antagonists of the Novel. He even goes as far as to use human experimentation on his own citizens for the sole purpose of increasing his own power and research done on dead mana.
  • False Friend: To Prince Valentino.
  • Foil: To Alberu.
  • Hiding Behind Religion: His family was blessed by the Sun God and he outwordly supports the Church of the Sun God. However, he is secretly working against the Church and with Arm (who use darkness-attribute magic like dead mana, which the Sun God actively opposes).
  • The Sociopath: A textbook example really. He regularly fakes his emotions, doesn't feel any empathy for anyone including his own family or even the citizen's in his kingdom who he had no problem killing in order to further his own goals.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: The eyes of the Empire's royal family glow gold in sunlight due to their blessing from the Sun God.

The Lion King Dorph

The King of the Lion Tribe

The Bear King Sayeru

The King of the Bear Tribe.

Elisneh

The Monarch of the Molden Kingdom who rose to the throne in her thirties, and older sister of Princess Jopis.

  • The High Queen: Subverted. She easily tricked the entire Molden kingdom into thinking she is a benevolent monarch in order to hide her horrible deeds of hiding dead mana inside of the palace. Elisneh also proves to be sadistic and quite twisted.
  • Master of Illusion: Her magic specialty.

The White Star/Cale Barrow

The leader of of the Nebulous Criminal Conspiracy that Arm is a a part of.
  • Big Bad
  • Born-Again Immortality: Has been reincarnating over and over again for over 1000 years.
  • Dragon Slayer: The Last Dragon Slayer.
  • Elemental Powers: Has multiple ancient powers.
    • Non-Elemental: His signature "sky" ancient power, which is related to Weather Manipulation but has more to it, acts like this. "Sky" is the element, but doesn't play a part in the Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors that the other elemtents do. Because of this, it doesn't play a part in balancing out the elements from his multiple ancient powers in his body.
  • Villainous RRoD: Or rather, Evil RROD. Like Cale, he has multiple ancient powers. He doesn't have enough powers for them to be balanced out, so the clashing of attributes is slowly killing him.
  • Legacy Character: Is trying to invoke this. He named himself after the original White Star, is trying to gather the ancient powers that he once used, and has two allies who use ancient powers of the dark and light attributes just like the original White star. He's also trying to emulate the First Dragon Slayer by gathering some of the powers he used.
  • Meaningful Rename: Threw off his old name to become The White Star. Happened two times over, as he had already changed his family name to "Barrow" as all Dragon Slayers did before him.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Named himself after the first White Star who existed in Ancient Times.
  • One-Steve Limit: Shares his first name with Cale Henituse. It's currently not clear what significance this has, if any.
  • The Sociopath: Seems like one. It turns out that he's capable of affection, but the things he cares about are automatically destroyed and the people he cares about killed because of a curse. He uses this on purpose to free himself of anything that cold hold back his lust for power, however.
  • Walking Spoiler: That a Big Bad exists is known early on, but details about the person himself are mostly spoilers.

     Others

The God of Death

Cage's patron god, who he communicates with through dreams. Priests from his temples channel his power for other people to make contracts that kill whoever breaks them.
  • The Grim Reaper/Psychopomp/Shinigami: It's not clear exactly what role he plays in the pantheon of the world of The Birth of a Hero, just that he has power over death. What little is revealed indicates that he could act as any or all of these things.
  • No-Respect Guy: Cage doesn't respect him much, mostly thinking that he's annoying. While most people would normally revere gods, Cale, not being from this world, doesn't really respect him either. Neither are afraid to badmouth him.

The Sun God

The god most widely worshiped in the world of The Birth of a Hero.
  • The Ghost: The Church of the Sun God has a big part in the story and the god itself is discussed, but it has yet to make an appearance.

The Original Holders of Cale's Ancient Powers

Ancient powers originate as powers possessed by people, which then become associated with a location or object after that person dies. These powers can then be taken by other people if they fulfill certain requirements. Cale can hear the voices of the previous owners of the ancient powers, and the things they tell him hint at a a much larger story.

Much later, it's revealed that Cale is the only person able to hear the voices of the ancient powers, though whether this is because of his unique ancient powers or because of the uniqueness of the person himself is unclear as of this writing.
  • Compelling Voice: The Dominating Aura.
  • Elemental Powers: Both traditional and non-traditional. Cale gains anicent powers rooted in the five main elements of nature: wood, wind, water, fire, and earth.
  • Healing Factor: The Vitality of the Heart.
  • Hellfire: The way the cheapskate used his fire was like this. He went on an rampage and used it to burn up an entire lake, creating what's now known as the Lake of Despair.
  • Hero of Another Story
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Their real names are unknown, so we can only distinguish them by the nicknames Cale gives them.
    • The current exception is the original holder of the Dominating Aura, also known as Nelan Barrow or Choi Jung Gun.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: Interestingly, they seem to mostly line up with them. It's not clear if this is intentional.
    • Gluttony: The glutton priestess of the Shield; offering an absurd amount of food is required to get her power.
    • Envy: The thief of the Sound of Wind.
    • Greed: The cheapskate of the Fire of Destruction.
    • Pride: The Dominating Aura
    • Sloth: The Super Rock, who chose inaction.
    • Wrath: The Sky-Eating Water.
    • Lust: The Blood Lust-filled Blood-drenched Rock.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: The Blood-drenched rock ancient power was created from the orignal White Star; it manifests itself as a giant, blood-red snake and kills all who are misfortunate enough to see it.
  • Walking Spoiler: Talking about the holders of the original powers in-depth is met with this issue.

Elementals

Nature Spirits that have different elemental affinities. They are usually invisible to most people and unable to be heard, though they can occasionally manifest themselves with bodies visible to everyone. Elves can naturally see and communicate with them and form contracts with them to borrow their power in order to use magic.
  • Blood Knight: A certain Wind Elemental is this; it's very vocal about how much it loves chaos and destruction.
  • Bond Creature: With elves. It's also possible for them to form contracts with humans, but the fact that humans can't understand them and can't even see them most of the time keeps this from happening.
  • Elemental Embodiment
  • Elemental Powers
  • It Amused Me: After he gets a special item that lets him hear their voices, Wind Elementals start hanging around Cale and helping him out because they're bored.
  • Nature Spirit

     !Spoiler Characters!
The most spoilery of characters. All entries below contain multiple layers of spoilers. You have been warned.

SPOILER CHARACTER Choi Jung Soo

Someone Cale knows from Korea. His former teammate and one of his best friends, he died saving Kim Rok Soo's life.

He died when Kim Rok Soo was the one who was supposed to die, so the God of Death gave the option to either be transported to another world like several family members before him or to get another chance to help Choi Han, who had already disappeared decades before.
  • Differently Powered Individual: Had the ability to generate a dragon-aura sword. He passes this ability to Choi Han.
  • Ghost Memory: Gives Choi Han his memories.
  • Hereditary Curse: It's currently unclear why exactly, but he was almost the latest in line in his family to be Trapped in Another World following Choi Han and Choi Jung Gun
  • The Heart: Seemed to be something like this.
  • Humble Goal: Only wanted to rebuild his childhood home and retire to live peacefully on a farm. Mostly inspired by the Crapsack World that he lived in. He wanted to keep his home so his missing family members would have somewhere to return to, but when that becomes impossible he wants to create a peaceful farm with Lee Soo Hyuk and Kim Rok Soo so they have somewhere to go at all.
  • Significant Birth Date: Not the date itself but the fact that he shares it with Kim Rok Soo appears to be Foreshadowing of some kind.
  • Take Up My Sword: On both the recieving end and passing end. He passes on his ability to Choi Han. Also, after anyone who could have taught him dies, he researched everything about his family's martial arts that was left behind and writes up everything he knows about it so that the marital arts style could live on after he himself died.
  • Walking Spoiler: Boy howdy. Knowing anything about him spoils Kim Rok Soo's Mysterious Past. He also spoils the state of the world he comes from. The reveal that he's related to Choi Han calls into question everything we know about the world of The Birth of a Hero.

SPOILER CHARACTER Lee Soo Hyuk

Cale's former boss in Korea. The team leader who commanded both Kim Rok Soo and Choi Jung Soo, he was very close to both. He died during the same attack that killed Choi Jung Soo, leaving Kim Rok Soo behind as the squad leader.

The God of Death gives him the chance to help Kim Rok Soo, now Cale, by giving him one of his abilities.
  • Differently Powered Individual: He had two abilities, though he was most famous for his "slash" sword ability. With help from the God of Death, he passes on his second ability to Cale, though what it is remains a secret to the audience for a while.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: His "Embrace" ability gives him the power to store anything in any location. It's implied that he couldn't use it much in a world where fighting abilities were more useful, but he may have realized the utility of it. It's Cale that we see use it great effect.

The Last Dragon Lord/The White Dragon/Lord Sheritt

The last dragon to have the power to become a Dragon Lord, she was an ally to the first Dragon Slayer 10,000 years ago. Part of her still lives on in her last creation, The Castle of Light. She is also Raon's mother.

The tropes below apply to both the original Sheritt as well as the projection in the Castle of Light.
  • Action Mom: The current Sheritt is technically Raon's mother, and is still as powerful as any other dragon.
  • Bizarro Elements: Her affinity is "protection". She can't fight on her own, but if she has something to protect she becomes one of the most powerful forces in the world. She can do anything from generating indestructable magical shields to spontaneously creating entire buildings as long as "protection" is the goal.
  • Brain Uploading: Uploaded her memories to the Castle of Light so part of her could watch over her children after she died.
  • Genius Loci: She's chained to The Castle of Light and can't leave its walls, and in return seems to to act as this for the castle.
  • Posthumous Character: Technically, since the original Sheritt is dead.
  • Virtual Ghost: A rare example for the genre, the current Lord Sheritt is a projection created from the original Sheritt before she died and is treated as her, having this effect.
  • Walking Spoiler
