  • A Boy and His X: A girl and her collie/Scottish sheepdog mix, Oliver.
  • All-Loving Hero: She is very idealistic, believes humans are kind, and does good things without expecting anything in return.
  • Break the Cutie: At a young age, Sandybell's father dies of disease, the Countess dies, Mark runs away and she's sent to a foster home where the only other child hates her. She's also subject to Kitty's nasty behaviour on a regular basis.
  • But Not Too Black: A variant. Sandybell has blonde hair, pale skin and blue eyes. Her biological father is stated to be from France, but he has black hair and tanned skin. This could imply he's a person of color, or that he's from the Southern region of France (that tends to be more phenotypically tanned).
  • Cheerful Child: She's 12 at the start of the series and has a very energetic and kind personality.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: She risks her life to save a sheep from Kitty's car, Edward from the rushing stream, and Jirobi from the exploding oil cannisters. Whenever Sandybell sees anyone in danger, she won't think and will instantly act to save them.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Has known Mark since she was 12, and is together with him four years later.
  • Cool Big Sis: Sandybell is viewed as this by the other kids, because she always has fun ideas like playing in the forbidden area and building a raft.
  • Country Mouse: She grew up in rural Scotland, with her father Leslie, and has known nothing but flowers and fauna ever since.
  • The Cutie: Sandybell is an adorable young girl with an upbeat demeanor in spite of the fact that she's an orphan. She's a Plucky Girl who doesn't let the negativity of others bring her down, and impresses even her most dedicated of detractors with her spirit, eventually turning them into her friends.
  • Damsel in Distress: She's kidnapped by a hitman at one point, but is freed thanks to Mark and Oliver.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: As a baby, she was found in a shipwreck by Lesie Christie and Kern Longwood, with no clues of her parents in sight. Leslie adopted her and raised her as his daughter, moving to Scotland afterwards.
  • Determinator: Nothing puts down Sandybell when she makes up her mind, much to Alec's annoyance. Mark calls it "inspiring".
  • Diving Save: When Kitty's car was about to hit a sheep, Sandybell jumped in front of it and carried the sheep to safety.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the original Japanese version, she was known as Sandybelle, but in most foreign dubs she's called Sandybell.
    • In the Latin American dub, her name is changed to Sandybell Leslie.
    • In the French dub, her name is changed to Sandy.
  • Dude Magnet: Mark has a not so subtle crush on her. Charles has a crush on her too, of the Loving Bully variant.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: Sandybell happens to hear Mrs. Ronwood shit-talk her to her husband, and is deeply hurt at the woman's cruelty.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: She wears mismatched socks - both are yellow, but the right side has pink stripes at the top and the left one has blue ones.
  • Genki Girl: She is always cheerful, even if she's in the most chaotic of situations. Exemplified the most in an early episode where Sandybell and Maggie are playing on swings. Maggie is scared and cover her eyes while Sandybell keeps laughing as she goes higher and higher.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair like this, fitting her youthful nature. She tends to tie it up with beads and bows.
  • Green Thumb: Sandybell is a Nature Lover, and works for the Countess by tending to the Wellington castle's garden, after she rejected the Shearer's gardener to do it for her.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She has blonde hair and Innocent Blue Eyes, and is a kind and sweet soul.
  • Happily Adopted: Though she didn't know she was adopted, before her father dies, he tells her that she's not his child by blood - he found her in a wrecked ship in the aftermath of a stormy sea.
  • Heartwarming Orphan: The biggest factor in Mrs. Ronwood's change of demeanor towards her is because she's always cheerful no matter how nasty her and Eva are to her.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: In the original Japanese version, her name is Sandybelle. However, all foreign versions of the anime change it to Sandybell.
    • Sandybell's name is spelled as "Sandybelle" in-universe many times, most prominently in the final episode with the tapestry that reads "Sandybelle & Mark", even in the dubbed versions. This makes it odd when many DVD box covers spell her name as "Sandybell".
  • Intrepid Reporter: Her dream is to become an Intrepid Reporter at Longwood's newspaper company. Unfortunately, because Evil Is Petty, Kitty Shearer also decides to take an interest there.
  • Kid Detective: When thieves steal important from items Mr. Ronwood's office, Sandybell and Oliver work together to find the culprit. She's also an Intrepid Reporter that ousts drug organizations in the country.
  • Kiddy Coveralls:Sandybell wears orange overalls and enjoys playing with animals and in nature, defies the adults who tell her where she can't play, and is the ringleader of the Ragtag Bunch of Misfits.
  • Kid Hero: Sandybell is 12 at the start of the story. She helps bust corrupt drug dealers, saves animals from danger and rescued Edward while he was drowning, amongst other deeds.
  • Little Miss Badass: Early in the series, she rescues Edward while he's struggling in the river (using her small size to support him against the currents). During the France arc, Sandybell even jumps on top of a fleeing Jirobi's car so he can't run away from the cops, and manages to retrieve him after he's gravely self-injured by the explosion.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Mark. He constantly thinks of her when he's sleeping on the streets, and can't help but see her in everything he draws.
  • Missing Mom: She was raised by a single father, Leslie, and would constantly question him about her mother. However, he refused to tell her anything about her, just that she was a very pretty lady who died of a disease when she was little. He eventually confesses that he never knew her mother when he's on the brink of death and she's adopted. The last arc of the anime is about Sandybell looking for her, and eventually finding her in the Greek island of Lefkada.
  • Motifs: Flowers. The Countess of Wellington gifts her a white lily, and she loves to tend to the plants at the garden, where she meets Mark.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Sandybell encounters a frenzied horse running around and calms it down. The horse warms up to her, and allows it to ride it around. When Kitty (the true owner of the horse) sees this, she Bitch Slaps Sandybell for riding her horse (even though her own negligence caused it to run away).
  • Oblivious Adoption: Leslie deliberately hid the fact that he wasn't Sandybell's biological dad. He was able to keep up the charade until he was diagnosed with a fatal illness. He then confessed the truth to her before dying, leaving Sandybell in utter shock.
  • Orphan's Plot Trinket: Before Leslie dies, he gives Sandybell a daffodil earring and says it's all he has of her biological mother. Linda has the other earring.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Sandybell is a playful girl and loves animals, so she smiles a lot. It goes hand in hand with her being a Genki Girl. However, as the arcs progress, Sandybell slowly starts to lose her smile, even breaking down when she goes to London for the first time.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Her default outfit is a pink dress with blue ruffles, with a white apron over it. Her final outfit in the series is also a long, pink, poofy gown.
  • Plucky Girl: While in Scotland, Sandybell risked being hit and punished if it meant defying Kitty and saving animals. She also stood up to Charles' Gang of Bullies and refused to stop seeing Mark, in spite of what Leslie told her. She's also dedicated to getting news stories out regardless if everyone else at Ronwood's mocks her.
  • The Pollyanna: Sandybell is this to the point she can be considered an Expy of the original Pollyanna, being a jovial Heartwarming Orphan who doesn't let the bad things in her life weigh her down. She's introduced as a chaotic mess who doesn't fear anything, and throughout the series, she never lets her hope for a better future fall through.
  • Red Is Heroic: Sandybell has red ribbons in her hair and at some point also dons red overalls (that match with Ricky's).
  • Searching for the Lost Relative: Sandybell was raised by a single father, and longs for the mother she never met. After becoming a journalist, she travels across Europe to find clues about her fate.
  • Shipwreck Start: Pushing the shipwreck from the story start into Backstory: as Sandybell's father Leslie succumbs to his illness, he tells her she's adopted. He goes on to explain that when he was young, he and his best friend Kern Longwood found an abandoned baby in a shipwreck accident, that baby being Sandybell. There was no mother in sight, and her father's corpse was on the ship as well. Thus, Leslie took home Sandybell and raised her as if she was his own.
  • Spirited Young Lady: When she was in Scotland, Sandybell would often defy rules set by those around her (like playing on the swings of a random Big Fancy House, and entering the Wellington castle without permission to retreieve the kid's ball), and fight with people who's ideals clashed with hers (like taking the injured bird Kitty shot, and declaring that hunting wasn't right). It helped colour the neighbourhood kid's perception of her as a Cool Big Sis.
  • Stylish Sunhats: During the London arc, she dons a beautiful, wide-brimmed white sunhat with yellow flowers on the top.
  • Two First Names: Both "Sandybell" and "Christie" are common as surnames, especially the former.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: Sandybell goes through a variety of different outfits at different arcs in the show, such as her pink beret and overalls.
    Leslie Christie

Leslie Christie (レスリー クリスティー)

Voiced by: Yoshio Kaneuchi (Japanese), Jean-Luc Kayzer (French), Augusto Di Bono/Sergio Tedesco (Italian), Kostas Skokos/George Mazis (Greek), Samir Chamas (Arabic), David Povall (Latin American Spanish), Unknown (European Spanish), Jorge Mota (European Portuguese), Tomas Bolme (Swedish), Géza Koroknay (Hungarian)

Sandybell's father. Before he dies, he confesses to her that she's adopted.

  • Bitch Slap: While he's generally a doting dad, he'll gladly dish these out here and there to Sandybell.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • He was known as Cristóbal in the Latin American Spanish dub.
    • He was known as Luís Christie in the European Portuguese dub.
  • Fainting: He faints constantly as part of his illness. When he faints in the middle of the night, it's a sign that things aren't going to get any better.
  • Friend to All Children: He was a school teacher and well-respected by his students for being kind and understanding.
  • Gender-Blender Name: "Leslie" is more commonly used as a girl's name.
  • Good Parents: When he was young, he had a promising future as an excellent teacher at a prestigious school in London, but after rescuing baby Sandybell from a stormy sea and deciding to raise her, he quit his job and moved to a small town in Scotland. Sandybell remembers him as a kind, caring, doting father and misses him dearly after he's gone.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: They're very prominent, especially amongst his graying hair.
  • Mandatory Motherhood: Gender-inverted and averted. In a flashback, it's revealed that Leslie had a fiancee. They broke up because she didn't agree to raise Sandybell.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: After he dies, Sandybell is forced to leave Scotland and move to the Ronwood's.
  • Secretly Dying: He has a heart condition and passes away on Christmas day.
    Oliver

Oliver (オリバー)

A collie/Scottish sheepdog mix who's Sandybell's best friend.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oliver_76.png
  • All Animals Are Dogs: Inverted, as he's a dog, yet Sandybell rides him like a horse and he even pulls carts.
  • Animal Companion: To Sandybell. He's been her best friend since she was really young.
  • Animals Respect Nature: He is protective over Sandybell's garden.
  • Big Friendly Dog: Oliver loves all the children he meets (except Kitty) and is eager to play with them.
  • Chariot Pulled by Cats: He pulls carts full of children, and is willing to allow them on his back too.
  • Determinator: Not even starvation, aggressive stray dogs, dog catchers or the British weather could stop Oliver from journeying across Great Britain in order to be with Sandybell again.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • He was known as Tambour in the French dub.
    • He was known as Olavo in the European Portugeuese dub.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: Oliver does not like Kitty or her bitchy attitude.
  • The Homeward Journey: Inverted: After Sandybell moves, Oliver runs away from his home in Scotland and follows her all the way to London.
  • Horse of a Different Color: He's a very big dog, so he can do tasks atypical of a horse.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Sandybell, of course. Makes sense since he's a dog.

Wellington family

    As a whole
  • Blue Blood: The Wellingtons are a noble family, and Mark's mother is a Scottish noble.
  • Big Fancy House: A castle in this case, that's run down on the outside, but very spacious on the inside.
  • Family Eye Resemblance: Mark inherited is Icy Blue Eyes from his mother. However, his hair is red while hers is blonde.
  • Flowers of Femininity: Subverted. Both Mark and his mother tend to the Castle's flower garden in their spare time, and are happy to let the children help there too.
  • Impoverished Patrician: In spite of their Blueblood, the Wellingtons are near-penniless by the time the story starts.
  • Riches to Rags: The Wellington family was once wealthy, but due to a number of poor financial decision on his father's part, they're left near-penniless by the start of the story.
  • Spoiled Sweet: A variant. They're not rich, but of Blue Blood, but don't look down on the ordinary commonfolk of Scotland.
    • The Countess welcomes Sandybell when she enters the castle to retrieve the children's football, and when the Shearers send a gardener to extend an olive branch, she rejects it. Sandybell and her friends offer to tend to the garden, she allows them and rewards them with cookies.
    • Mark spends his days drawing in the countryside and when Sandybell asks who he is, he says he is "the Prince of the Garden" and hides his heritage. Very few people know he's the son of a Countess, though there are some exceptions like Kitty.
    Mark Blanche Wellington

Mark Blanche Wellington (マーク=ブランチ=ウェリントン)

Voiced by: Kaneto Shiozawa (Japanese), Eric Baugin (French), Alberto Sette (Italian), Yannis Kalatzopoulos/Fotis Armenis/Argyris Pavlidis (Greek), Muhammad Ibrahim (Arabic), Javier Ponton (Latin American Spanish), Unknown (European Spanish), João Paulo Costa (European Portuguese), Tomas Bolme (Swedish), Péter Galambos (Hungarian)

  • Big Damn Heroes: When Charles gets his Gang of Bullies to destroy the Countess' garden and attack Sandybell for trying to protect it, Mark appears, and starts fistfighting Charles. Charles is too slow to avoid him and ends up with a nasty beating, and Sandybell grows a new appreciation for him.
  • Break the Cutie: Mark's family is struggling to adapt to their new lifestyle after losing their money, and just as he makes some new friends, his mother is brutally killed in a traffic accident. His father tries to force him to marry a girl he can't stand, and Mark is so full of grief he runs away.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • His name was changed to Marcos in the Latin American Spanish dub.
    • Similarly, in the European Portuguese dub his name was changed to Marco.
  • Everyone Can See It: Kitty can clearly see he likes Sandybell, and it makes her green with envy.
  • Gold Digger: Enforced. His father wants to climb the social ladder, so he forces Mark to marry Kitty. It ends up being a loveless marriage and Mark pefers to pursue his dream of being a painter.
  • Hair Color Dissonance: His hair is red, but is depicted as brown in other instances.
  • Homeless Hero: He is explicitly shown to be sleeping in the gutters after running away from home.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Averted. In the final episode, his name is explicitly spelled as "Mark" on the tapestry.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: At heart, Mark was a kid who wasn't allowed to have a normal childhood because of factors out of his control, and secretly yearns for normalcy. He also has cold, baby-blue eyes.
  • Intimate Artistry: His hobby is drawing, and he loves Sandybell. The night he runs away from his Arranged Marriage to Kitty, he first goes to Sandy's house, opens the window and leaves her his drawing notebook with a note telling her that he will become a painter, and one day he will return to look for her.
  • Modest Royalty: He's the son of the Countess, but wears worn out clothes when he's drawing and painting the countryside. Sandybell even meets him this way.
  • Nice Guy: He's a genuine and down-to-earth guy who stays strong and is humble in spite of his origins. He noticably lacks Kitty's Rich Bitch attitude and is like his mother instead.
  • Perpetual Smiler: By the start of the story, Mark is a happy kid who wants to be friends with everyone. When things get worse and Mark is driven to the streets, he starts being unable to do this any longer.
  • Pretty Boy: He has striking blue eyes, ruffled hair and is very good looking.
  • Rags to Riches: To express his grief of losing his mother, Mark began painting unconventional art. One day, an art dealer took interest in them and put them on display at the European New Artist Paintings Exhibition. His artwork was popular it won the Grand Prix award, which carried a heavy monetary reward.
  • Redhead In Green: When Sandybell meets Mark, he's wearing tattered brown clothes over a green shirt.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: He's attracted to Sandybell and only Sandybell, and by the end of the anime, they're an Official Couple.
  • Spanner in the Works: He helps Sandybell find her mother as he was the only one who knew Laurent, who had clues on Linda Edwards, Sandy's biological mother.
  • Tears of Joy: When Lusanne tells Mark he was looking for him ever since he found his paintings and wants to display them in the contest, Mark cries in relief, finally finding success after years of living as a starving artist.
  • True Art Is Angsty: After the deaths of the Count and Countess of Wellington, Mark becomes a shell of his former self. To make matters worse, he is engaged to Kitty Shearer purely so that the Wellingtons can save face and access her inheritance. Mark is disgusted by this, so he breaks off their engagement and runs away, willingly choosing to live on the streets rather than enter a marriage he hates. The grief of losing his parents at a young age motivates him to create dark and unconventional art. One day, famed art collector Roussanne notices Mark's artwork, likes it, and puts it on a museum, catapulting him into the public eye.
  • Vague Age: Mark is a wide-eyed idealist and tends to behave like a Kiddie Kid at times, but he's also of marriageable agenote  and has a crush on Sandybell (who, according to Word of God, is 12). Though by the end of the series, Sandybell is 16.
    • In the second episode, Kitty tries to propose the idea of Mark marrying her, but the Countess says that they are too young to get married and shuts it down. After Mark's Birthday Episode, his engagement to Kitty occurs. So Mark was probably 15 upon meeting Sandybell, and 16 for most of the series. This would mean him and Sandybell have a three year age gap.
  • "Wanted!" Poster: In one episode, Mark becomes a wanted criminal after stealing a bike (to chase some thieves who ran off with his paintings). Sandybell and Ricky are shocked to see his mugshot in the local newspaper. He manages to at least become acquitted afterwards.
  • Wealthy Ever After: Mark becomes wealthy after an art dealer discovers his paintings. Formerly a runaway from home who spent his days living on the street, he finally accumulates enough money to bring the Wellingtons prestige again, and is in a relationship with Sandybell.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: He becomes this after meeting Sandybell, inspired by her free-spiritedness and courage to do whatever he wants.
    Countess of Wellington

Countess of Wellington

Voiced by: Ai Sakuma (Japanese), Danielle Dinan (French), Maddalena Vadacca/Sonia Scotti (Italian), Niki Tsigalou (Greek), Unknown (Arabic), Amparo Brown (Latin American Spanish), Maria Louisa Sola (European Spanish), Glória Férias (European Portuguese), Elisabeth Bolme Nordqvist (Swedish), Ildikó Mics (Hungarian)

A kind lady who, in spite of her wealth and status, is friendly to everyone around her.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/countess_of_wellington.jpg
  • Doting Parent: She was very loving to Mark, and also took care of Sandybell while she was at the castle.
  • Friend to All Children: She befriends Sandybell by giving her a white lily. Sandybelle holds her in high regard after this. One can imagine that if she was still alive, she would be furious to find out her husband was attempting to force her son into an Arranged Marriage.
  • Good Parents: She loved Mark with all her heart. With her death, he became a shell of his former self and began making dark art to cope.
  • No Name Given: Her first name is never revealed, we only know her through her title.
  • Ojou: She is a Scottish countess, after all.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: After she dies, Mark is forced by his father to marry Kitty, beginning his subplot of running away from home.
  • Parental Substitute: Sandybell saw in her the mother she never had, and loved spending time with her. Sadly, she was taken away from her shortly afterwards.
  • Prim and Proper Bun: She has short hair, but ties it into a bun at the back of her head.
  • Shipping Torpedo: Kitty and her mother go to the Countess' estate and tell her about having Kitty marry Mark. The Countess opposes it, saying that Kitty and Mark are much too young to get married, and Kitty spends the car ride home fuming.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: She was a kind, thoughtful lady, but passed away in a traffic accident while she was very young.

Shearer family

    As a whole
  • Doting Parent: Mr. and Mrs. Shearer wouldn't trade the world for Kitty and adore her. They behave more like friends than parents. Especially Mrs. Shearer, who holds Kitty like a child as she cries.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • They became the Shiara family in the Italian dub.
    • They became the Schiller/Shiller family in the Latin American Spanish dub.
  • I Owe You My Life: After Alec retrieves Kitty from the drug dealers and beats the crud out of them, all three of them thank him and call him a hero. Even Kitty, who was a stuck up snob for most of the series, stares at him with gratitude.
  • Shipper on Deck: Initially for Mark/Kitty. However, when Kitty tells her parents she has fallen for Alec, Mr. and Mrs. Shearer approve of him dating their daughter.
  • Upper-Class Twit: Kitty and her mother are both stuck-up snobs. Mr. Shearer is more modest, having been born into poverty.
    Kitty Shearer

Kitty Shearer (キティ=シアラー)

Voiced by: Mami Koyama (Japanese), Raphaëlle Schacher (French), Emanuela Pacotto/Anita Bartolucci (Italian), Vina Papadopoulou/Leta Musouti (Greek), Marcel Marina/Wafa Tarabih (Arabic), Denise Libre (Latin American Spanish), Clara Nogueira (European Portuguese), Elisabeth Bolme Nordqvist (Swedish), Ágnes Zsíros/Zsófia Riha/Éva Madarász (Hungarian)

A wealthy girl who lives in the same neighborhood as Sandybell. She pines for Mark and does not like the fact that he shows signs of a crush on someone else, so she tries her best to have Mark all for herself.

  • Alpha Bitch: She is stuck-up, petty, domineering and rude, and her most prominent trait in the first few episodes is her entitlement due to being born a Shearer. She treats Sandybell as a punching bag for her wrath, often screams at her Beleaguered Assistant Scappan, and tries to strong arm Mark into doing things she wants, even if he doesn't want it. Kitty's main desire is to get whatever she wants, and when she's denied that, she becomes a monster.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Kitty believes that Sandybell is the reason why Mark doesn't reciprocate her feelings, when in actuality Mark just isn't attracted to her. Even if Sandybell never existed, Mark still would have run away from home because he wanted to follow his dreams of being an artist. Of course, Kitty's bitchy attitude doesn't help things.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Mark himself does not like her because he knows her true self is an unpleasant, pushy woman who treats everyone around her cruelly. He outright admits to not wanting to marry her in the fourty-fourth episode, to her duress. Kitty is sad, but eventually accepts that she cannot force him to love her.
  • Animal Jingoism: Of sorts. Her name is Kitty and she's deathly afraid of rats.
  • Arranged Marriage: Because Mark's father was bad with money and landed the Wellington in financial trouble, he proposed his son marry Kitty, the only daughter of the wealthy Shearer family and retain their fallen honour and wealth. Mark is against this, but Kitty eagerly agrees.
  • Beauty Is Bad: She's undeniably a beautiful woman with her frosty blue eyes and long, red, hair...but she's also a terrible person who's an Alpha Bitch and a bully.
  • Break the Haughty: Her first dose of reality is when Mark leaves her because he can't stand to be married to someone he hates. Then, while working at Ronwood Newspaper Agency (a job she got thanks to Nepotism), she's kidnapped and attacked by drug dealers who are angry the newspaper has been exposing their illicit deeds. Kitty learns that life isn't as easy for everyone as it is for her, and apologizes to all the people she's hurt. She accepts that Mark loves Sandybell and even gifts him some of her family's land property as a token of her friendship.
  • Can't Take Criticism: When Leslie suggests that Kitty stop hunting, instead of listening to him Kitty stares at him with fury, while the Headmaster cowers in her presence.
  • Character Development: She goes from being an obsessed rival hell-bent on breaking up Sandybell and Mark's friendship to someone who's a genuine friend to her and accepts her romance with him; Post Timeskip she's given them her blessing and moved on with Alec.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She tries to blacken Sandybell's image in front of Mark, from accusing her of theft to embaressing her, because she's jealous that he likes her. She is happy when she's finally engaged to Mark, but when he runs away from home, she takes out her anger on Sandybell.
  • Cool Car: Kitty owns two - a bright red one (that she takes Sandybell for a spin in) and a dark blue sports car, that she often uses to tail Sandybell and her friends.
  • Cool Crown: On Mark's birthday, she wears a thin, wired crown alongside a Fairytale Wedding Dress.
  • Control Freak: Even when she's distantly afar from him, Kitty tries to control Mark's interactions with Sandybell and impede into his personal life using whatever means she can, believing that she can mold Mark into being hers and hers only.
  • Damsel in Distress: Kitty and Scappan are kidnapped and Bound and Gagged by Jirobi's mafia members. Luckily, Alec rescues them.
  • "Dear John" Letter: Before Kitty and Mark are set to be engaged, he runs away from Scotland and leaves a letter towards Kitty telling her he can't be with her and bidding her farewell.
  • Dub Name Change: She was known as Rita in the European Portugeuese dub.
  • Entitled to Have You: She believes her and Mark are meant to be, and was angling to marry him before the events of the story. When he refuses, she doesn't want to believe it and tries to go after him, but eventually accepts it in the end.
  • Evil Is Petty:
    • Her many attempts to sabotage Sandybell and Mark's friendship, include paying Charles and other people to make her look bad. Even after Mark runs away, she continues to be a bully to Sandybell.
    • After Mark runs away, Kitty arrives to Sandybell's house and demands that she tell her where he is. When she notices that Sandybell has Mark's paintings, she steals them.
    • She decides to work at Ronwood's newspaper company because Sandybell works there, and gets her father to ensure she gets a high position.
  • Evil Redhead: Downplayed, but she's a Spoiled Brat from a well-off family with red hair and constantly antagonizes Sandybell. When Sandybell gains the affections of Mark, she becomes livid and her bullying increases.
  • The Fashionista: All of Kitty's clothes are either colour-coordinated, very long and frilly, or have pretty accessories. She undergoes the most costume changes of any character in the show, highlighting how vast her Unlimited Wardrobe is.
  • Fairytale Wedding Dress: During Mark's party, Kitty wears a blue, frilly dress with her signature cravat. When she's getting married to him, she also proposes another of these - a blue dress with a yellow flower on the chest.
  • Fiery Redhead: The Jerkass variation. She has red hair and is very haughty and belittling to Sandybell and her friends.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She tries to sabotage Sandybell's chances with Mark, and is obsessed with coming between the two. She is so paranoid that when Sandybell receives a letter, Kitty steals it, thinking it's from Mark, when it's actually from her old friend Charles.
  • The Gunslinger: Kitty hunts for pleasure and owns a hunting rifle that she shoots ducks and other poultry with.
  • Hate Sink: Kitty is a self-centered Attention Whore who's incapable of thinking about anyone other than herself. A good chunk of the early episodes involve her trying to deface Sandybell's reputation in one way or the other because Sandybell either stood up to her animal abuse or called her behaviour out. She's also a Green-Eyed Monster when it comes to Mark and frequently makes him uncomfortable. Even when Sandybell moves to London, Kitty is petty enough to start working at the same place she does, because she's a Jerkass. If it wasn't for the job waking her up and helping her realize what a Spoiled Brat she had been, Kitty would have stayed this way til the end of the anime.
  • Jerkass: She's hot-blooded, stubborn, refuses to budge unless she gets her way and believes she's entitled to treat people however she wants. She wasn't well-liked in Scotland because of her attitude, and in London, people only tolerate her for the money. When Alec slaps her across the face, she cries and runs away, having suddenly learned that not everyone is going to put up with her bitchy attitude.
  • Jerkass Realization: A core part of her reformation is realized how badly she's treated Sandybell, Mark and Alec. She makes amends to them in different ways - to Mark and Sandybell, she gives them her blessing and gifts them some of her familial property, and to Alec, she acknowledges his strengths as a person and thanks him for saving her life.
  • National Stereotypes: She is a Scottish redhead who's Hot-Blooded and violent.
  • Official Couple: With Alec at the end of the series, having fallen for him after he saved her life.
  • Pretty in Mink: One of her one-time outfits is a leopard print coat with thick, yellow furs at the wrists and collar.
  • Recognition Failure: At one point, Kitty goes to London and sees a poor street artist, who she begins laughing at and insulting alongside other onlookers. Unbeknownst to Kitty, that street artist was Mark, and he was deliberately hiding his face from her.
  • Redhead In Green: In the first arc, she predominantly wears a green shirt and a Classy Cravat. Her equestrian outfit consists of the same shirt but with denim overalls and a white coat.
  • Rich Bitch: Her father is the Chairman of the British conglomerate Shearer & Co., while Sandybell is from a single-parent household and her father is a schoolteacher. As a result, she's snobbish to her and believes Mark is downgrading himself by associating with a "poor" girl.
  • The Rival: A one-sided example. She views Sandybell as a rival for Mark's affections, but Sandybell doesn't hold any contempt for her. Nevertheless, Kitty will always try to be one step ahead of Sandybell, from using her wealth to get a higher position at her job, to gaining access to special events that could lead to breaking news stories, to pursuing the drug gang the newspaper company ran stories on...only to get kidnapped by them.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Whenever Kitty wants to find dirt on Sandybell or ruin her day, she bribes her closest associates (Charles, David, James, Eva) into doing whatever she asks. Notably, Alec is the first case of someone refusing her money.
  • Shipper on Deck: In the Grand Finale, she gushes about what an adorable couple Sandybell and Mark are, to everyone's surprise.
  • Shout-Out: With her regal aura, her good looks, her fashionista way of dressing, her being an Upper-Class Equestrian and the episode where Mark is commissioned to draw her, Kitty is a dead ringer for Kitty Fisher. Even their names sound similar.
  • Smug Snake: In the first episode, Kitty is certain that Sandybell will get punished for rescuing an injured bird, and later, punished for "stealing" the Countess's painting, and smirks as she tells on her. To her surprise, both times not only does Sandybell not get punished, but the Countess takes a shine to her and gifts her a white lily.
  • Spoiled Brat: Both her mother and father indulge her every desire and she's never disciplined for her bad behaviour.
  • Stalker with a Crush: In her first episode Kitty spies on the Wellington castle with binoculars to get a glimpse of Mark.
  • Stylish Sunhats: Throughout the show, her most recurring outfit includes a blue sunhat that has a rose, that matches with the rest of her attire.
  • True Blue Femininity: Almost all her clothes have some form of blue on them, whether they're her dark blue overalls over a green shirt, her blue fancy gown with a matching hat, or her all-white outfit with a blue cravat.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: She's always dressed in stylish, fancy clothes to show off her status as the Shearer heiress.
  • Upper-Class Equestrian: Kitty rides her own horse and is mentioned to be part of an elite equestrian club.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: While Bound and Gagged by the gang, Kitty sees a rat crawl past, and her eyes widen.
  • Vague Age: Kitty is old enough to drive her own car and get married, but she's also constantly involved with the other kids and has eyes for Mark, who has a crush on twelve-year-old Sandybell. Of course there's also the chance that she's the oldest of the friend group. In Scotland, the marriageable age is 16, and to get a license for driving you have to be at least 17 years old, unless you are getting or have applied for the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in which case the minimum age is 16. Not helping that the anime gratuitously shows Sandybell and Ricky as Kids Driving Cars, though that's only with one specific do-anything vehicle.
  • Violent Glaswegian: Kitty delivers a Bitch Slap to Sandybell when she sees her on her horse. She also slaps Alec because she was offended by his insinuation that she was terrible at her work. To her shock, Alec hits her back.

  • Named by the Dub: The European Portuguese dub names him Óscar.
  • Self-Made Man: He was born into poverty, but worked his way up to become one of the wealthiest men in the country.

    • He was known as Charlie in the Hungarian dub.

Charles assumes his prank caused Sandybell to cry, but it was actually because of the stress of watching her father succumb to his illness. Charles spends his next few appearances trying to show he's sorry for Sandybell.
  • Fiery Redhead: Downplayed as he's more of The Gadfly than anything, but he has red hair and he finds fun in harassing people.
  • Gang of Bullies: Charles, alongside George and David, leads one. Though by the time Sandybell leaves Scotland, he's grown out of it.
  • Green Thumb: When Sandybell leaves Scotland, he decides to look after her garden in her place.

  • Perpetual Frowner: She often frowns and is quite ill-tempered.

London

    As a whole
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Averted. While "Longwood" is the more common rendition of the name, their name is explicitly spelled as Ronwood in many stills of the show.
  • Karma Houdini: The wife and daughter of the Ronwood family never get their just desserts for tormenting an orphan and making her life a living hell. • Cool Old Guy: He has saved Sandybell's life many times, and she views him as a protector.
  • Declaration of Protection: It's not stated, but after Sandybell befriended Edward, he felt a connection to her and watches her from the shadows to help her whenever she needs it. Many a villain who tries to mess with her is swiftly taken out by him.
  • Dub Name Change: His name was changed to Eduardo in the European Portuguese dub.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Strikes one up with Sandybell while she visits the hospital. It becomes heatrtwarming when afterwards it's found out he's her uncle.
  • Meaningful Appearance: Despite his tan, he has blonde hair and blue eyes, just like Sandybell.
  • Parental Substitute: By the end of the series, Sandybell's mother returns to Greece to care for the orphansnote , but not without going to Scotland first and paying her respects to Leslie's grave, while also attending Sandybell and Mark's party. Thus Edward becomes this trope fully, having taken over as Sandybell's parental figure in place of Kern and Leslie, alongside Mr. and Mrs. Scott.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: To Sandybell, who is his biological niece through his sister. He doesn't piece together that she's his niece until the very end.
  • Tsundere: Of sorts. He doesn't like people and is very closed off, but after Sandybell befriends him, he becomes more open and friendly.

  • Amnesiacs are Innocent: After the horrific shipwrecking accident where her husband died, she lost her memory and forgot she had a daughter. She has since moved to the Greek island of Lefkada, where she works as a nun and acts as a kindly mother figure to children.
  • But Now I Must Go: She spends some time bonding with Sandybell, but she loves her life of caretaking for the orphans and eventually returns to Lefkada to do so (with the implication that her and Sandybell visit each other from time to time).
  • Congruent Memory: She didn't recognize Sandybell at first. However, after the girl fell into the water, Linda remembered years ago, how the same thing happened during the shipwrecking incident, and puts two and two together, realizing Sandybell is her long lost daughter.
    Linda: "Sandybell, my daughter!"
  • Dub Name Change:
    • She became Linda Lawrence in the French dub.
    • The European Portuguese dub changed her name to Luísa.
  • English Rose: Has the typical markings of one - she is from England, very pretty, chaste until marriage and a shy, demure soul by nature. Sandybell's father was instantly charmed upon seeing her and wanted to get married, but her father disapproved of him.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Much like her daughter, she's an empathetic soul who loves taking care of children. However, she's way more timid than her, and is too scared to react when she sees one of her children fall into the sea (compared to Sandybell who instantly jumped in and tried to rescue her).
  • Fairytale Wedding Dress: She was married in one. See here.
  • Friend to All Children: When Sandybell inquires about her, she's told that Linda works at a convent as a caretaker of children.
  • Identical Stranger: She looks eerily like the Countess.
  • Love Hurts: When Linda told her father about the man she wanted to marry, he rejected him. Linda is seen crying in her flashback as Edward pleads with him to reconsider. Later, she and her husband had Sandybell. One day, when the two were on a cruise ship, the engine malfunctioned and the ship began to sink. The two managed to make it on a lifeboat, but Linda was severely injured, lost her memory, while he was swept by a current and later died.
  • Orphan's Plot Trinket: Her daffodil earring. She has one half, while Sandybell has the other.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Sandybell has her eyes and hair colour.
  • Token Religious Teammate: She's a nun. Given where she works, she's likely a Greek Orthodox Christian.

    Linda's husband (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

Linda's husband

Voiced by: Character doesn't speak

The husband of Linda and the father of Sandybell. He is from France, and was wed to Linda when they were both very young. Unfortunately, the shipwreck accident that separated Sandybell and her mother claimed his life.

  • Ambiguously Brown: Likely a nod to his Mediterranean heritage, being a Frenchman.
  • Everything's Sexier in French: He is from France and Linda's First Love. She continued to fall for him even though her father disapproved of him.
  • Nice Guy: He was shown to be a kind-hearted man who adored Sandybell, and even Edward vouched for him to their father.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: A rare male example. In Linda's flashback, when the passengers of the ship were escaping in lifeboats, a sudden current swept him up and took him away from her. Despite this, he continued to hold Sandybell above the water so that she wouldn't drown and eventually died later.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He is killed off minutes after being introduced.
  • The Voiceless: He never speaks.
