    Main Characters

Tachibana Rintarō

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rintaro.jpg
The protagonist of the story, Rintarō has a disease that can give him a heart attack if he gets sexually aroused, and undergoes martial arts training throughout his youth to control his emotions.

  • Allergic to Love: Rintarō could quite easily die if he gets aroused. He had a heart failure the first time he did and was lucky to survive. As of chapter 13, he can hold Kyōka's hand without issue.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: If Rino can understand his style by simple acts like change his clothes, Rintaro shows he can replicate all the three dragons' styles and attacks while fighting Saizo in the last volume.
  • Bare-Handed Blade Block: Against Kako's katana.
  • Berserk Board Barricade: A bit of a stretch, but the second time Ren changes her slightly-torn clothes in front of him, Rintaro uses Minyō no GyōTranslation : Shichaku ShitsuTranslation  to assemble a near-instant brick partition wall to block his view of her.
  • Big Eater: When using "Form of the Cow's Stomach: Gluttony" in 11th Dragon: Crisis in the Enemy Camp.
  • Blow You Away: Jakuyoku no GyōTranslation : Shōfū SōhekiTranslation  and, more literally, Gyōku no GyōTranslation : Fūfū PaipuTranslation .
  • Can't Have Sex, Ever: His Henisei Tashu Ijou Translation  Syndrome, abbreviated as Hentai Syndrome, means he's at risk of suffering heart failure if he so muc as gets sexually aroused. (Since the blood rushes to a certain place, it rapidly places heavy strain on his heart. It's best to think of it as a... strange heart condition.) The Hospital Hottie who informs us of this (who, by the way, accidentally almost triggers his second brush with death) notes that it's possible to live normally so long as he doesn't get aroused, which leads to his near-Spartan upbringing. He's supposed healed by the last chapter, but his gynophobia, not quite.
  • Catchphrase: Rintarō has a habit of saying, "Shinto mekyaku, meikyo shisuiTranslation ," whenever he gets nervous, usually thanks to the girls; however, it's not working as well as he'd want.
  • Ceiling Cling: Jakuyoku no GyōTranslation : Chōyō ShishiTranslation  and Rōsen no GyōTranslation : Spider (3rd Dragon: Dance of Double Wind) and Bat (11th Dragon: Crisis in the Enemy Camp).
  • Celibate Eccentric Genius: And a Eccentric Mentor to Ayane. Despite the fact Rintaro can be eccentric in general.
  • Chaste Hero: If he gets sexually aroused, his condition will kick in and he could die.
Rintarō: I will avoid all forms of eroticism.
  • Chick Magnet: To a lesser degree but it's become apparent that girls are flocking towards him. Rurina is madly in love with him, the less relevant Iyo wants to marry with him, Ayane, Meru and Ema are quite affectionate with him, and Kyōka, Rino and Ren are definitely interested in him.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: On the outside Rintarō looks like he has the body of an average high school guy but when he suffers Clothing Damage one can clearly see that he has quite the Heroic Build underneath his uniform.
  • Clasp Your Hands If You Deceive: When informed that the winner of the Bakugyaku Festival gets to create a new school rule, he adopts this pose while planning to require school uniforms to include long pants.
  • Close-Call Haircut: Inflicted by Meru's punches in 6th Dragon: Tiger Tail Spring Waters.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: He may not realize that some of the girls' interest may be romantic, but fear for his health drives him to avoid them anyway.
  • Diagonal Cut: Rōsen no GyōTranslation : Gansai ShūdaTranslation  does this to a building with one kick.
  • Dig Attack: Jakotsu no GyōTranslation : Sōkyoku WanshōTranslation .
  • Dirty Kid: His illness began at the age of 6 years. His training brought him out of this.
  • Dodge the Bullet:
    • Rintarō and Kyōka dodge a lightning strike with Rōsen no GyōTranslation , Goku ShikiTranslation : Raijin RaijinTranslation .
    • Earlier he pulls off a Matrixesque bullet dodge... to avoid seeing Panty Shots.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Rintaro is one of the strongest persons at the school. But, his unsocial demeanor and run away habits doesn't help to make him popular with any other girl that aren't the Dragons or his friends.
  • Fantastic Fighting Style: Ryūha Koei Sōgetsu, which his father taught him starting at age six.
  • Flanderization: Not at first, but throughout the volumes, Rintaro's techniques becomes more and more cartoonish. To the final volumes, many of his "attacks" are obvious parodies to cartoons, anime, manga, and movies, mainly when he tries to avoid girls and fanservice. The techniques maintain their effectiveness, though, and serious attacks are reserved to more serious moments. Rintaro himself becomes less stoic and (much) more comical by the last volumes.
  • Gag Penis: its heavenly implied that Rintaro has one of these if everyone’s reaction is anything to go by
  • Ground Pound: Kogaku no GyōTranslation : Gōhō HaganTranslation  and Gōhō GadanTranslation .
  • Hand-or-Object Underwear: He uses Jakuyoku no GyōTranslation : Wood Man to cover Ayane's and Rurina's nude bodies with leaves, then exaggerates the trope by continuing until they're covered head to toe.
  • Head Pet: He adopts Kito after Meru's departure from Nangokuren.
  • Hollywood Heart Attack: When he was 6 years old.
  • Imagine Spot: He wishes he could freeze the swimming pool with Rōsen no GyōTranslation : Hyadain to avoid being surrounded by girls in swimsuits. Averted in the last volume, when the trauma of have his favorite TCG card ripped makes Rintaro uses a sadness based Super Mode with an ice based defense, essentially pulling An Ice Person.
  • In a Single Bound: His Gōgyo no GyōTranslation : Suihei Shachi Translation  carries Marokichi and himself from the bottom of a swimming pool to the roof of a nearby building.
  • Ki Manipulation: Some of Rintarō's attacks are portrayed as these.
  • Killing Intent: Related to the Ki Manipulation, Rintarō explains to Ayane that everything, including inorganic substances, emits ki. He dodges a falling drop of water with his eyes closed, not by using sound or intuition, but by sensing the presence of its ki; Rintarō trains Ayane to use this skill to detect her opponent's killing intent and overcome their Kokumu Anten Speed Echoes techniques.
  • Magnetic Hero: Not by Meru's level, since Rintaro isn't that sociable, but aside the Dragons, Meru and Ren, a good handful of people is fond of him. Rurina, Erin, Marokichi and Ema easily becomes part of his group and give him support, becoming members of his faction when he becomes the 4th Dragon, by the end of the manga.
  • Making a Splash: Downplayed. Rōsen no GyōTranslation : Gansai SuidaTranslation  is a technique where Rintarō makes use of the nearby bath water to fire water droplets to hit a victim's Pressure Point, rendering them incapable of movement.
  • Martial Pacifist: With shades of Technical Pacifist/Badass Pacifist. Rintaro prefers to not resort to violence and avoid fights (sometimes, it borders to cowardice), but he's more than able to kick many butts and even enjoy a fight if he's left with no choice except fight. Last volumes have him unusually coward about the prospect of fight Saizo again, but he regains his resolution and actually win.
  • Megaton Punch: He knocks out a real bear with Rōsen no GyōTranslation : Nagarehoshi GingaTranslation .
  • "Mission: Impossible" Cable Drop: He uses this after jumping out of a school window, name-dropping the movie.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Thanks to his years of training under the tutelage of his father, Rintarō has developed an amazingly ripped figure and constantly has his clothes ripped off during battle. Meru's reaction to seeing Rintarō's ripped clothing says it all.
  • Mundane Utility: Jyuso no GyōTranslation : Irritation Ignition Inferno generates a heat wave that can be used to instantly dry a girl's Sexy Soaked Shirt.
  • The Nose Knows: Rōsen no GyōTranslation : Shūkyū FutsukaTranslation .
  • Oblivious to Love: Surprisingly downplayed. He does not always notice that a girl is pulling romantic advances on him, but he sure does notice when he's in a romantic situation. Case in point: His "date" with Rino and being wary about Ayane's "confession". It's implied he's not so oblivious to Rurina and Ren too.
  • Oh, Crap!: Played for Laughs, whenever Rintarō is exposed to Fanservice.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: With one use of Kogaku no GyōTranslation : Gōhō GadanTranslation , he destroys two buildings by collapsing the cliff face they were built on. According to Meru, Ren took a whole hour to collapse one building the same way; according to Rintarō, the second building collapse was unintended.
  • Punched Across the Room: Inflicts this on Super!Gachimuchi!Marokichi with Chototsu no GyōTranslation : Retsuzan KongōTranslation .
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Jakuyoku no GyōTranslation : Byakkon SeikaiTranslation  lets him punch as fast as Super!Gachimuchi!Marokichi.
  • Razor-Sharp Hand: Jakuyoku no GyōTranslation : Tenpa ShōjinTranslation .
  • The Reveal: Rintarō reveals to Kyōka about his condition in chapter 12.
  • Ship Tease: Has notable moments between the main girls of the series. Ayane is his disciple so naturally they spend a noticeable amount of time with one another, while Kyōka stole the spotlight for her own small character arc and was the first girl to hold Rintarō's hand without causing a reaction. And there's his "date" with Rino, when he learns exactly what's her problem with Ren. Ren herself, Meru and even Rurina have their moments.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Mainly due to his medical condition but when he revealed his love of Detective Drama he wasn't exactly greeted with much fanfare or respect.
  • The Spartan Way: His training with his father to master Ryūha Koei Sōgetsu. This was done with more love in mind than most other examples.
  • Super Mode: Ryūha Koei Suigetsu: Goku Shiki.
  • Super-Reflexes: Due to his training, Rintarō and Kyōka have the skill to jump away from a lightning strike at the last second.
  • Super-Senses: Yakuto no GyōTranslation : Jichō Kachō.
  • Super-Speed: Rousen no GyōTranslation : Raihyō SōkuTranslation , Jakotsu no GyōTranslation : Jinshō ShippaTranslation , and Chototsu no GyōTranslation : Usain Bolt.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In chapter 17, Rintarō notes he used to be a lot more isolated and selfish, caring only about himself and his issues. However, interacting with so many girls, annoying as they are, has helped him become a better person.
  • Tornado Move: Jakuyoku no GyōTranslation : Tenpū GayokuTranslation  and Tatsumaki Enpū KyakuTranslation .
  • Tree Cover: Inverted - he jumps into a tree to avoid seeing female nudity with Jin-en no GyōTranslation : KonohagakureTranslation .
  • Kryptonite Is Everywhere: And girls and fanservice are his kryptonite, so he have to deal with it daily. Unsurprisingly, in many cases, it's a matter of turn weakness into strength that saves him. Effectively showed in the student council president arc: what saves Rintaro when fighting a doped Ema isn't a new technique, but his gynophobia, which becomes the perfect dodge strategy until her doping wears off.
  • Unstoppable Force Meets Immovable Object: Rintarō plants his legs into the ground to make himself immovable and uses Gyōku no GyōTranslation : Sumibi GyōkakuTranslation  to counter the seemingly-unstoppable Gachimuchi!Marokichi's charge, and succeeds.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Rintaro is arguably one of the most powerfull persons at the school, able to stop BOTH Kyoka and Rino midfight and fight simultaneously BOTH Ren and Meru to a standstill...and even with that, very few students recognize his feats or taking him seriously. Or, like Erin inputed, he's just too strong for them actually care.
  • Vibroweapon: He uses Jyuso no GyōTranslation : Ishin DenshinTranslation  to close the shutters on a series of windows by tapping a wall with one hand.
  • Wall Crawl: Jyuso no GyōTranslation : Slug allows for this and Ceiling Cling.
  • Wall Jump: Jin-en no GyōTranslation : Senkū ChōhaTranslation .
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Sexy girls for Rintarō, on account of his medical condition. And he ended up going to a school in which about 99% of the student body is female.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Kyōka notes after their fight that he had stepped in a puddle of water before his final attack, causing him to slip and reduce its power. It's hinted that the he could have won, considering his attack still brought her to her knees afterwards.
    • Invoked on his rematch against Saizo. The reflexes Rintaro developed to avoid girls and fanservice are useless against Saizo because...he's a man. It also counts as a headscratching moment, since the oponent's gender was never a problem to him before, after fight Marokichi and Saizo for the first time.
  • You Wanna Get Sued?: When Ren compares Super!Gachimuchi!Marokichi to "A Pink Majin... with a power level of 530,000," Rintarō responds, "You shouldn't say that out loud... that's licensed!!"

"Senseiryū" Ayane

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ayane_7.png
A first year who rose up quickly enough be counted as one of the Dragons. She formed a group called RyōzenpakuTranslation  compromised of most of the 1st year girls. She holds the principles of fighting for her comrades to ensure their safety. Her two sub-leaders also act as bodyguards, as Rintarō found out. Her forte is speed.

  • Action Girl: She's not one to walk away from a fight or challenge.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Thanks to her observation of Rintarō plus the training he gave her (which he didn't think she'd actually do), she's now capable of performing his Kogaku no GyōTranslation : Gōhō HaganTranslation . However, she can only do it once because it drains her energy.
  • Berserk Button: Harming her friends as a means of getting to her really angers her.
  • Call-Back: In Chapter 2 Ayane mentioned her family was full of men. 20 chapters later we find out what kind of people they were...
  • Category Traitor: To the Asahinata clan. She ran away rather than fight her best friend and surrogate sister until either was crushed and defeated for their "graduation".
  • Death Glare: She opens 5th Dragon: The Earth-Shaking Tiger by staring at Rintarō until he agrees to start training her.
Rintarō: NO to the Laser Beam Gaze of Death!
  • Fragile Speedster: Meru notes that she's the fastest of the three Dragons but she lacks much stamina or defensive capability, as shown as she was visibly winded in several exchanges against Kyōka.
  • Genius Bruiser: She and Chō are tied for second-highest grades, one point behind Rintarō.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Seems to have started rearing its head since Kyōka and Rintarō's performance. She also "twitches" sometimes other girl was getting closer of Rintaro.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Causes Rintarō constant grief thanks to heaps of Clothing Damage and various other accidents.
  • Megaton Punch: Senseiryū KōkenTranslation .
  • Nice Girl: Ayane cares greatly for her friends and will willingly risk injuring herself for their sakes.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: She doesn't quite match up to the other dragons in terms of power or skill. However she is still the strongest of the first years, shown when she easily overwhelms Asuna in a fight.
  • Oblivious to Love: She's way denser than you can give her credit for. She wants Rintaro be "her master forever", stating she's not ready to graduate as his disciple. Tells a lot about Ayane, when everyone else, even Rintaro himself thought she was confessing to him.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Senseiryū SōgagekiTranslation  combines this with Speed Echoes.
  • Red Baron: SenseiryūTranslation .
  • Red String of Fate: Parodied when Ayane sows an actual red string onto Rintarō's backpack, enabling her to follow him to his summer training camp despite his attempts to elude her.
  • Super-Speed: She's the fastest Dragon out of the three and can produce Speed Echoes with ease.
  • Token Good Teammate: The only dragon to take an explicit stance against Social Darwinist tendencies.
  • The Worf Effect: Gets overwhelmed by Kyōka and Rino despite her status as a fellow Dragon.

"Ransuiryū" Rino

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rino.png
A second year Dragon, Rino operates in a very strategic manner. Her goal is to do the one thing even her sister, Ren, couldn't do - single rule of the school. Her forte is technique.

Kagamiin "Kōgōryū" Kyōka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kyoka_8.png
A third year dragon, Kyōka is a tall busty woman who absolutely loves fighting. Her goal for her remaining year is to find someone who can make her tremble with excitement and so far, her sights have been set upon Rintarō. Her forte is strength.

  • Animal Eyes: Her eyes are slitted, like a dragon.
  • Blood Knight: She loves a good fight and often seeks to challenge people at random when she believes they'll reveal to be a particularly strong opponent, so she may experience the same feeling as when she first met Ren. She especially sets her eyes upon Rintarō after their initial meeting and gains an immense battle-lust towards him following his match against Meru.
  • Combat Stilettos: She wears a pair of stylish black heels that don't seem to hinder her in fights at all.
  • Dance Battler: Her family are experts in the Nihou BuyouTranslation  in which her unique footwork is completely unreadable to Rintarō's eyes and allows her to close in on those unfamiliar with her movement.
  • Fangs Are Evil: She exhibits these in contrast to her fellow Dragons to symbolize her fierce and battle-hungry nature.
  • Fiction 500: After feeding Rintarō an entire table spread of "leftovers from the fridge," Kyōka puts four stacks of plates in each of his hands, on his head, and on his right knee. She tells him to carry them to the kitchen to improve his balance, but warns him not to drop them because each plate is worth 100,000 yenConversion .
  • Genius Bruiser: She scored the highest among the 3rd years in a standardized test. She's also the strongest amongst the three Dragons by a small margin.
  • Hidden Depths: While she may come across as a Blood Knight while at school, she does pursue other interests such as traditional dance and is actually a very smart and thoughtful young woman. Before she became a Dragon, she was very much a Yamato Nadeshiko, whose battle skills are based on her tremendous experience with traditional Japanese dance. Not to mention her aptitude with household chores.
  • Invulnerable Knuckles: Averted. She punches so hard, she tears the skin off her knuckles if unprotected. She wears brass knuckles to remedy this.
  • Lightning Bruiser: She's the physically strongest of the three Dragons and can keep up with Ayane with relative ease.
  • Megaton Punch: Gōsai Reppa Translation .
  • Memetic Outfit: In 11th Dragon: Crisis in the Enemy Camp, she wears a sweater that resembles the "Virgin Killer Sweater."
  • Ms. Fanservice: Has the largest breasts of the three Dragons. In addition, her little clothing shows off her cleavage, torso and legs.
  • Power Fist: See Invulnerable Knuckles above.
  • Red Baron: KōgōryūTranslation .
  • Secret-Keeper: After the main character tells her of his illness.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Compared to her appearance before becoming a Dragon.
  • Slasher Smile: She sports a constant one in combat.
  • Social Darwinist: She might have taken a page from Shishio Makoto's book, just not as extreme.
  • Stepford Smiler: Before she met Ren and accepted her inner self.
  • Super-Strength: Her forte, compared to Ayane's speed and Rino's technique.
  • When She Smiles: The smile she makes when Rintarō compliments her cooking is beautiful.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Surprisingly enough, Kyōka falls into this category. She's polite, kind and even demure, not to mention is very skilled at household chores like cooking. She even demonstrates a motherly side to her, demonstrated by her fussing over Rintarō's comfort.

    Ayane's Faction
A group of first-year girls loyal to Ayane. She calls them RyōzenpakuTranslation .

"Tōretsutei" Makoto

The 5th among the "Empresses", Makoto is known as "Fierce Martial Empress." She is also the 1st vice-leader for Ryōzenpaku. She has a very serious disposition and loves to take baths.

"Gōhien" Keiko

  • Big Eater: She's obsessed with eating, inviting Ayane to each lunch with her before 10 AM.
Keiko: The time between breakfast and dinner is all lunch.
Ayane: You should quit that one meal an hour lifestyle.
  • Martial Arts and Crafts: She can not only carry giant boulders, but smash them into the shape of dragons.

"Seibu Empress" Shiryū Chō

A Chinese girl and first-year alongside Rintarō and Ayane.

    Rino's Faction

Megu

One of Rino's sub-leaders.

Shuu

Not much is known about Shuu due to very little her very little screen time in the manga, but she is always next to Rino whenever she shows up and is one of the carriers of Rino's swords.

  • Expy: Of Zhuge Liang.
  • Number Two: She and Megu can be considered Rino's sub-leaders.
  • The Smart Guy: She gathers data on anyone who might be of interest to Rino.
  • Unknown Rival: According suplementary material, a comic one to Rintaro. Both like a Yu-Gi-Oh! expy-like card game and disguise themselves to play with some kids at a local store. Rintaro defeated Shuu in a game and after they discover each other's identities, she wants he stay quiet about her hobby.

Iyo

A ninja who spies for Rino by gathering information on the other factions. She considers Shuu and Megu to be Rino's lapdogs.

Ryōko

A student in Rino's group of followers.

  • Out of Focus: Suplementary material observes she's so unnoticed that's almost a non-character.

    Kyōka's Faction

Kako

The "Slashing Steel Empress" and Kyōka's Number Two. She is a high level swordsman and has a rivalry with Ayane's Makoto.

Misa

The "Glorious Flower of Archery." A very clumsy girl who seems to stumble and fall every few steps. Possibly based off of Xiahou Yuan, a very famous archer.

  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Introduced tripping and falling on the way to meet her friends.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: She shot three separate arrows at three separate targets and hit all three - while being thrown into the air. The arrows had suction cup tips and rope trailing behind them.
  • Red Baron: "Glorious Flower of Archery."
  • Token Mini-Moe: When lifted by Choco, Misa's full height barely exceeds the height between Choco's knees and chin. Standing on the ground, her head is level with the top of Ayane's breasts (Misa's a third-year, and Ayane's a first-year).

Choco/Chiyoko

Called "Unbreakable Strength," she is another one of Kyōka's followers and her bodyguard. Possibly based off of Dian Wei.

Homura Honori

Captain of the Cheering Squad and another of Kyōka's followers, who has known her and Kako since they were kids.

  • Cool Big Sis: Rintaro considers her kinder than many other female students, despite she being loud and brash. On her way, Honori took a liking on him too, giving him advices when he's lost about what to do.
  • Forgetful Jones: In the Hot Springs Episode.
  • Genki Girl: In contrast to what she was as a kid, before meet Kyoka and Kako.
  • Improbable Weapon User: She carries around and presumably fights with a large flag pole.
  • No Indoor Voice: Even outdoors, she yells loudly enough for others to complain about her volume.
  • Super-Strength: Rintarō appraises her raw power to be on par with Marokichi's.

    Rintarō's Associates

Tachibana Kentarō

Rintarō's father, who taught him Ryūha Koei Sōgetsu to help Rintarō control his emotions and prevent another heart attack.

  • Good Parents: He sincerely cares for his son, and dedicated ten years of personal education to protect Rintarō from the dangers of his deadly disease and inspire him to achieve greatness.
Doctor: I'm terribly sorry, but I'm sure Rintarō-kun's life will be full of hurdles.
Kentarō: You may be right. However, if you know the way, it is easy to jump over those hurdles... and I will teach him that.
  • Ground Punch: Uses one to create a fissure between Rintarō and Ayane and Rurina to keep the girls away from him.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • At the beginning, when his son suffers a life-threatening heart attack and he learns about Rintarō's condition.
    • Again later on, when he learns that his son's school's student population is 99% female.
  • Put on a Bus: Left at his forest retreat less than twenty pages into 1st Dragon: An Unusual Guest from Heaven.
    • The Bus Came Back: Rintarō returns there to train with him again in Volume 5, 20th Dragon: Fatherly Pride.
  • The Spartan Way: He trains his son in an unsettled forest over the course of ten years to build up his emotional discipline and physical strength, in order to help him survive his "Hentai Syndrome."

Kōsuke and Tamao

Two of Rintarō's very few male classmates. Kōsuke is a tall, thin blond; Tamao is a short, fat brunet with glasses. They join Rintaro's dragon faction to try to see as much panties as they can...

Marokichi

Another of the few male students at the school. Like Rintarō he has an aversion to getting aroused by females. Mainly due to his "GachimuchiMeaning  Syndrome," which causes sexual arousal to make him become muscular, gigantic, and berserk with lust. He gives support to Rintaro in the student council president Arc and joins his dragon faction by the end of the manga.

Rurina

Ex-enforcer of the Disciplinary Squad with her twin sister Rumina, they bear the character Translation  on their armbands. Rurina differs from her sister being more airheaded and having a gigantic crush on "Rintaro-sama", which borders Yandere tendencies.

  • A Day in the Limelight: She's a side character, but supplementary material give three special chapters to Rurina and her tentatives to get Rintaro's attention. Rintaro even admires she was able to complete Kentaro's training course.
  • Biting the Handkerchief: Rurina at the end of 10th Dragon: A Talent for Misfortune.
  • Butt-Monkey: Doesn't have the best luck, specially with her "love life".
  • Club Stub: Basically Rintaro's fan club president AND the whole club, if there was one. The amount of Rintaro merchandising she have is ludicrous and a Rintaro little doll is her favorite. An "official club" is formed when Erin, Marokichi and Rurina helps Rintaro with the student council president elections, and after, when they form his dragon faction by the end of the manga.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Rintarō points out that the Disciplinary Squad's punishment options of a 60-day suspension, a 90-day community service term (spent to improve the school), or a 10,000-yen "donation to the Disciplinary Squad" (read: bribe for the twins' testimony) are "overkill" for mere window peeking.
  • Good Angel, Bad Angel: They appear when she's pondering about to give a look on Rintaro's notes. She listens the Bad Angel so quick that the Good Angel is clearly exasperated...

"Kokua" Erin

A mysterious student who, like Meru, is unaffiliated with the Dragons and their power struggle. She is the one who told Meru about Rintarō and, by Meru's order, work to help Rintaro to become a dragon, eventually becoming a close ally to him. She's part of Rintaro's faction when he becomes a dragon.

  • Animal Theme Naming
  • The Beastmaster: She can control a flock of crows to form a mid-air staircase for her when she makes her first appearance.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: According to Meru, she makes all her clothes herself.
  • Flash Step: She weaves through a crowd of Rino's Mooks without them even realizing she passed through.
  • One of the Kids: Despite be only two years older or so, she's still a third-year student that passes her time with Rintaro and other first-years. She's also the only third-year girl that's part of Rintaro's faction by the manga's end.
  • Red Baron: KokuaTranslation .
  • Stage Whisper: Doesn't speak above this for any reason.
  • With Friends Like These...: She gives advices to Rurina about what to do to woo Rintaro. The results are foreseeable, but Rurina thinks Erin is just being considerate, when Erin was really continuously making fun of the poor girl.

Ema Brohorse

An American transfered student who arrives at the school with the goal to be "The Number One" and is fooled by the Asahinata Clan into fight Rintaro. She is kind of bubbly and an anime fan, tooking a like of every cute japanese thing. After their fight, she and Rintaro become friends.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Calls Rintaro "Chintaro".
  • Defeat Means Friendship: And Ema could not be happier. She also gave up of the student council president elections, since it was never her goal, so Rintaro can take over. By the end of the manga, she becomes part of Rintaro's dragon faction.
  • Evil Counterpart: What she initially looks like to Rintaro. Both are very strong martial artists, but while Ema is very social, popular and laidback, Rintaro is closed, unpopular and awkward. On the other hand, Ema doesn't care with her fans and have not any friends, meanwhile Rintaro, despite not be the school's favorite person, have a circle of close friends. Also, Ema's judo acts as a counter to Rintaro's Koei Sogetsu, effectively limiting Rintaro's tricks.
  • Genki Girl: Always fun and energetic. It is only a facade, because she is actually lonely.
  • Hidden Depths: Her real wish is make a friend. Rintaro makes her wish true and she considers him her best friend.
  • New Transfer Student: An exchange student who comes from America to find Nangokuren's "Number One", which is Rintaro.
  • Occidental Otaku
  • Red Baron: She was that since she was a toddler!
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Because of Asahinata's doping trick, she gets a massive dark aura.
  • The Social Darwinist: Of a type. She initially believes that only a strong person can befriend another strong person, because that is what watching anime taught to her. Obviously it is debunked when Rintaro defeats her.

    Asahinata Clan
A nearly-all-male assassin clan whose students learn the Ryuuha Kokumu AntenTranslation  school of martial arts.

Saizou

A student of the Asahinata clan. He was an older brother figure to Ayane and Iori.

  • Broken Pedestal: To Ayane.
  • Enemy Mine: To Rintaro. After they draw at their first fight, defeat him becomes Saizo's goal.
  • Evil Feels Good: He felt like something was missing in his life until he killed the other students of the clan during the "final test" of the clan.
  • Slasher Smile: In 21st Dragon: Trials and Tribulations.
  • You Have Failed Me: Warns Iori that he will kill her if she loses a fight despite favorable conditions that he set up.

Iori

One of two previous female students of the Asahinata clan, the other being Ayane.

  • Clingy Jealous Girl: To Ayane. She is quite protective of her and will attack anyone she thinks is molesting her, even Rintaro, ironically.
  • Shrinking Violet: Saizou refers to her as such; she keeps away from Rintarō, only looking at him from behind Saizou or Tree Cover.
  • Speed Echoes: Her fighting style is based on moving quickly enough to leave after-images, then sneak-attacking her opponent while they attack an after-image.
  • Tree Cover: Not so much to spy on Rintarō as to keep away from him.

    Other Characters

Okina

Rintarō's homeroom teacher.

  • Sensei-chan: Her behavior leaves much professionalism to be desired. Meru refers to her as "Okina-chan."

Asuna

The President of the Disciplinary Squad, she resents Ayane for becoming the Dragon of the first years and seeks to take her title to gain Rino's attention.

  • Attention Whore: From putting on a facade of kindness, to pulling an idol act to gain more followers, to desiring to strip Ayane of her title to gain Rino's attention...
  • Berserk Button: Just looking at Ayane is enough to set her off.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: Subverted. She does not actually need glasses. They were just there to help enforce the facade of gentleness she put on to fool the masses. After her defeat she does not wear them anymore.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She puts on the face of a kind and gentle girl in order to make her all the more endearing to people who experiment the over-the-top harshness of Rurina and Rumina. She's actually extremely manipulative and selfish.
  • Chain Pain: Her weapon is an extending chain with weighted ends (maybe a meteor hammer).
  • Fangs Are Evil: When her cutesy facade melts away she starts baring her fangs in her battle against Rintarō and Ayane.
  • Marshmallow Hell: Accidentally subjects Kōsuke to this, then intentionally does this to Marokichi, but not for the reasons you'd expect.
  • Put on a Bus: We do not hear of her after her true nature was revealed to the school and the Discplinary Squad was disbanded...
    • The Bus Came Back: Until she comes back later on with another plot to take down Ayane.
  • Red Baron: TenkōfūTranslation .
  • Tsundere: Shows a bit of her dere side towards Marokichi, after he said he would always be there to help her, even if she decides to keep using him as a weapon.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Attempts to pull one to get the drop on Rintarō, but fails due to Kousuke and Tamao dogpiling her.
  • Yandere: Appears to be one for Rino, in the sense that she's willing to do anything to get her attention.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: Defied. When Marokichi returns to normal from his Hulking Out form and Rintarō is about to make up with him, she yells at them to prevent a cessation of hostilities, asking if they're trying to attract fujoshi readers.

Rumina

Ex-enforcer of the Disciplinary Squad with her twin sister Rurina, they bear the character Translation  on their armbands.

  • Out of Focus: Different of her sister, Rumina barely is in the story after the early volumes.

Hatenko Meru

A 3rd year, eighteen-year-old girl, Meru is considered on par with the ruling Dragons but is not affiliated with any of them. She prefers to spend her time at arcades or one of her many portable gaming systems that she carries. She easily becomes friends with Rintarō and is the first to get him to consider becoming a Dragon.

Kito

A red-furred hamster kept as a pet by Meru, and later by Rintaro.

"Gentōryū" Ren

Recently graduated former Dragon and elder sister of current Dragon Rino.

  • Action Fashionista: Very big into fashion.
  • All Men Are Perverts: The reason why she was having so much social problems at college is that mentality, because she considers all men were trying to flirt with her with indecent eyes (in only one panel, we learn that's untrue). That's why Meru sends her to Nangokuren to meet Rintaro. The results are somewhat an improvement.
  • Cool Board: Which also acts as her primary weapon.
  • Defrosting the Ice Queen: Ren is always stoic and fussy about everything, except with Meru and Rino. That extends to Rintaro too, when Meru asks him to help her with her problems to socialize. Ren's true intention was check if Rintaro was worth of the Covenant of Hagen. She not only considers him worth, but she's timidly charmed by him.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Meru.
  • Funbag Airbag: For Misa.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: The slightest tear on her outfit will cause her to strip and put on another one regardless of where she is or who she is with.
    Rintarō: She's an ero-rist!
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Agrees to let Rintarō inherit the "Covenant of HagenTranslation " and become Rino's friend/target, but orders him not to even think about making her his wife. She's very protective of Rino, independent of what is their current relationship. Meru states that the real reason Ren wants Rintaro far from Rino is because Ren herself wants to be Rintaro's wife.
  • No Sense of Direction
  • Red Baron: Gentōryū.
  • Ship Tease: She shows an interest in Rintarō after seeing whether he was worthy of inheriting the "Covenant of Hagen." Meru pesters her a lot about that.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Despite all Meru's teasing, Ren is clearly charmed by Rintaro, which becomes an obvious crush later. Ren let slips she's "on marrying age" to him.
  • Tsundere: A mild one for Rintaro. She becomes kinda defensive when it's about him.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Not really comfortable around most men.

Kyōka's mother and the School Board Chairman. She also wants Rintarō and her daughter to "hook up," much to Kyōka's embarrassment.

"Evil Beauty" Naomi

A girl who easily gains and loses weight.

Gorozaemon Jinbeenosuke Yonemitsu

The elderly principal of Nangokuren High School.

  • Badass Grampa: He's the creator of the three most powerful schools of martial arts used in the series and Kentaro's master. Just give the man his false teeth back and he goes from looking barely alive to every bit a martial arts grandmaster.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: He's almost skeletally thin, but the die he lifts and throws into the air (which has six sides, each as long as his forearms or Rurina's calves) breaks the wooden stage it lands on with its weight.
  • Our Founder: There was a statue of him on school grounds until Ren chopped it up with her board.

Minomon's trainer

A schoolgirl who trained her pet monkey to steal underwear from other students.
