openHarsher in Hindsight misuse (?) Film
And here's HIH. Again. This time from YMMV.Cinema Wins (spoilers):
- Harsher in Hindsight: One clip from "Everything Great About Iron Man" has a picture of a young Tony Stark with who looks to be Microsoft Co-founder Bill Gates; this prompted a comparison bet. Stark and fellow Microsoft founder Paul Allen, specifically placing Stark as Allen's in-universe counterpart. After Avengers: Endgame, both Stark and Allen would be dead; the former after his Heroic Sacrifice; the latter after succumbing to non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in October 2018.
If it were a direct comparison between Iron Man 1 and Endgame, I'd leave it alone, but I don't believe a comparison between a Cinema Wins video about Iron Man 1 qualifies as HIH for Endgame.
Edited by RoundRobinopenCreator/TomHolland Real life troping Film
It looks like the page for Tom Holland suffers from real life troping which is apparently against Creator Page Guidelines. The page probably needs cleaning up.
I won't argue that he's Adorkable but that trope is also listed in No Real Life Examples, Please!.
I also wonder if Cannot Keep a Secret and Meme Acknowledgment can be kept as a Conversational Troping.
openAmerican Films Film
Why isn't there an index for American films, like there are for the films of other countries?
openMan of Steel and its arguable Idiot Plot Film
Even after five years, the controversy around Man of Steel continues. Troper Dylanbk argued in the movie's YMMV page that the movie features an Idiot Plot because a) Zod needs the codex hidden in Superman's blood to rebuild the Kryptonian race, he is well aware that Superman spent his whole life on Earth too. What's does he tell him he plans to do when he gets the codex? use earth to rebuild krypton and wipe out the entire human race.
and b) On top of that there is no reason for Zod to have to rebuild Krypton on Earth, there are other planets in the Solar system that are uninhabited. On top of that, the world engine confirms this has no point.
I had to reverse his edits with these arguments: a) Zod and his minions are genetically engineered soldiers. They are bred to seek the most violent solutions to a problem. If there is a logic in their thinking, they are biologically compelled to ignore it.
b) This

openAvengers Endgame Headscratchers Locked Film
Not sure if this is the right place for this since it's kind of a moderator question but is there a reason why the Headscratchers page for Avengers Endgame is locked? I looked at most of it and the history and there didn't seem to be any significant arguments overtaking the page or excessive complaining that has gotten other Headscratchers pages locked. It seemed like a lot of standard discussion and questions. Is this just a temporary lock for some reason we can't see or is it permanent? I apologize if this is a mod only thing that I have no right to know the details of. I was just curious.
Edited by Ogiga99openWhat to do with Film.Hellboy Film
Film.Hellboy previously covered both Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army. I split those into separate articles earlier today, and I was just wondering what I should do with the original page.
Cut List it? Make it a redirect for Film.Hellboy 2004 or Franchise.Hellboy?
Edited by PrimisopenSpoilers on Spoiler-Free pages Film
Can spoilers for one work be on a spoiler-free page for another work?
I ask this because YMMV.Avengers Endgame has an entry that spoils the newest episode of Game of Thrones (I don't watch GoT though, so I don't know how big of a spoiler it is).
openDolphZ - Deleted a Woobie entry in Infinity War with a biased Edit Reason Film
I was looking at the Woobie.Avengers Infinity War page, and I noticed that the Wanda Maximoff example, which had been on that page for about a year, had completely vanished a few days ago. I looked at the History, and I saw that DolphZ deleted the entire entry with an Edit Reason of "Thor is definetly the biggest one. He suffered way more than Wanda." See here.
First off, this person spelled "definitely" wrong in their Edit Reason, so they have spelling issues. Second and more importantly, they deleted an entire entry because they believed that Thor was a bigger Woobie than Wanda. That's demonstrating bias. Also, since The Woobie is a YMMV item, they deleted someone else's opinion because it differed from theirs. Also, they didn't go to the Woobie cleanup thread before they deleted the entire entry.
I am thinking about re-adding the original entry and sending this person a PM, on the grounds that they need to take their opinions about Thor and Wanda's Woobie statuses to the Woobie cleanup thread. Are those the right next steps to take? Thank you in advance!
Edited by mouschilightopenIs Tobey Maguire's Portrayal of Spider-Man a Base-Breaking Character? Film
I've seen some fans claim he's the most true Spider-Man to the Marvel comics because of how geeky, awkward, and silly he is. I've also seen some fans claim he's the weakest Spider-Man because of how meek and wimpy he can be, and his growth as a hero is inferior to the other Spider-Mans.
Edited by crystalbeach96openWeird trope entry Film
Pokémon Detective Pikachu has a strange, semi-gushy entry on Revisiting the Roots that doesn't seem to fit any of the various cleanup threads, so I brought it here. It reads like it was written by someone dissatisfied with current Pokemon games or someone attempting to justify everything dark in the trailers with evidence from various Pokemon media, while the Detective Pikachu game itself doesn't really have any of that, and Pokemon media after Gen 1 have had those things even though in the franchise as a whole they're uncommon (Team Galactic killed a Clefairy and presumably a bunch of Magikarp, Ghetsis as mentioned tries to attack you directly, a couple Sun and Moon anime episodes were all about people and Pokemon that died, etc.).
"* Revisiting the Roots: The trailers may look out of place with the tone of the main-series games, but they're not too far removed from the anime, manga and games of the original generation, which feature gunsnote An episode of the anime involved the Safari Zone warden utilizing guns heavily, including holding Ash at gunpoint and shooting at Team Rocket, which led to 4Kids skipping over it entirely, profanitynote it's always been in the anime's Japanese dub, realistic violence in Pokémon battlesnote an infamous scene in the manga involves Blue's Charmeleon slicing an Arbok in half and disemboweling it, deathnote besides the aforementioned Arbok, the Lavender Town mission in the Kanto games involves a Mercy Kill on the spirit of a Marowak killed by Team Rocket, and villains using Pokémon to directly attack humans and human citiesnote unlike Mewtwo's destruction of his lab and the siege of Saffron City, non-Pokémon battle violence in the games is either offscreen or unanimated (with some major exceptions, like Ghetsis in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2)."
Any ideas as to what to do with it?
Edited by lalalei2001resolved Where should I add this trope? Film
Hi everyone!
I noticed that the trope If I Can Only Move heavily applies to a scene about 10 minutes into The Last Jedi; however, I'm not sure whether to add it to the page for The Last Jedi or if I should instead add it to the Resistance Starfighter Corps page, as this trope applies to one of the Corps' members (specifically Paige Tico, the one whose movement or lack thereof is pivotal). If someone could help me figure out which trope listing to tack this onto, that would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for any help!
Edited by WikikineticopenReality Ensues Film
As usual, Reality Ensues is wildly misunderstood and misused. Is there any long-term project to clean up the examples?
Avengers: Endgame is getting especially bad, with a dozen examples already and probably none of them fitting. I'd appreciate help to check out if any are salvageable.
openScary TV Anthology Episode or movie Film
This was an episode of an anthology series between 1977-1982. I believe it was in the USA.
This man was a writer and he stops off at a hotel for seclusion so he can write. He meets a few folks and something isn't right about the hotel. During the night the hotel catches on fire and as he is leaving he stops to help only to find a man with a hooked nose biting a woman or hurting her. He runs out the hotel is fully engulfed in flames. He goes to the cops or a sheriff to tell him of the events and they tell him the hotel burnt down many years before. The writer is so insistent that the police ride out to where the hotel was and it's just an empty field. As the walk along the lot, they suddenly find a woman dead with a terrifying look across her face.
I was young but this show scared me so bad I had nightmares for a week. Thanks for any help!
openRegarding We Used To Be Friends on Star Wars example Film
Troper erook has previously removed We Used to Be Friends example on Star Wars because the troper apparently claimed that it fits better under A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil. But what about the IP approved image on the front page? Surely each tropes can overlap with each other cause it still conveys the same feeling either way.
Edited by Loekman3openEvading spoilers-free pagelock on other MCU Pages Film
Okay, I had a suspicion and fear this would happen. But I see it happen. Basically some fans are posting Endgame spoilers on YMMV pages for other Marvel movies as a way to get around the page lock and subvert the intended purpose behind it.
This poster (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/el.php?findfor=The12thDoctor) is doing it multiple times.
I gather the movie is released in some parts of the world and it can be frustrating for posters not to post spoilers given the page is locked, but going to other Marvel movie pages and posting there, in my opinion, feels like a cheap trick since obviously many readers will be revisiting the pages and moments from earlier films in preparation for Endgame. Can someone revert these pages soon?
openSafe to recreate Once Upon A Time In Hollywood? Film
Now that a trailer has come out for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, do you think it's ok to recreate its' wiki pages?
openStar Wars 9 Film
The Way back machine won't let me go a little further to the old WMG page of Star wars 9.
Phoenixion deleted an example from the Awesome.Avengers Endgame page with a rather interesting Edit Reason, calling the person who originally added the example "insecured and sexist" and claiming that the person doesn't like female heroes. The Edit Reason for deleting it sounded angry, what with the use of all-caps and accusing another person of being against women.
