Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Also [tup] for Lisbeth Fischer, now that I'm done reading the story. Her role was surprisingly not as huge as I thought it would be. And the story's doesn't spend the whole time fixating on all the crap she did, so seems fine with me if she goes up.

Hello again. I'm just wondering if any of you kids' horror afcianados have heard of the book series The Midnight Library, because it's absurdly dark, especially compared to Goosebumps or even Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Recently, I've learned that the author is Alvin Frewin Jones, of the Sundered Lands series. Almost every story i've read ends on a horrifying downer, with Infant Immortality thrown out the window, and the kids who don't die meet something far, ''far'' worse. Anyway, two particular stories still stick out to me, and i'd like to hear your thoughts:

The Parrot Demon

This nasty thing is from the story Man's Best Friend. A boy named Ben's grandfather has died recently, and his family is left with all his belongings. Among these is a pocketwatch that the old man wanted Ben to have(A kid named Ben gets a mysterious watch from his eccentric Grandpa.Heh.) and an decrepit, creepy looking old parrot. The bird seems normal at first, if unsettling to look at...until Ben is left alone with his new housemate. The Parrot speaks:"I Killed your Grandfather''. Ben can't believe his ears, and it doesn't end there. "I killed your Grandfather...and I'm going to kill you." When Ben asks how the bird killed him, the parrot cackles, "Down the stairs he went. Snappity-Snap. The days onward become a battle of psychological warfare between boy and bird, as Ben is haunted by the creature's threats and unable to prove anything. His parents are also acting strangely. Ben has a Big Friendly Dog who he cherishes, and now his parents are neglecting the dog while fawning over the evil bird. They even express hatred toward the poor mutt, with his dad claiming he should take him to the pound and "that dog is more trouble than he's worth."

Eventually, Ben opens the back of his Grandpa's pocketwatch and discovers a message for him. Turns out his old man discovered the parrot was the host to a sadistic, murderous demon, and that he only has so long to warn his family before the demon kills him-which it did. He tells Ben to pick up a book from the local occult bookstore that will let him exorcise the monster.

After Ben has found the book, he returns home to face the demon. As he starts to read the spell, the demon starts furiously screaming for him to stop as it hurls objects around the room and even tries to say they can be friends.

Soon, the spell sends the thing flying out the window into the night, with the parrot's body, rotting away, implying this demon kills the things it possesses. With his parents back to normal, and even being glad the ugly parrot is gone, Ben joyously allows his poor dog back into the house...and then the dog starts growling at him. The boy realizes in horror that he may have botched the spell that banishes the demon. And that if there's one thing worse than sharing a house with a murderous parrot possessed by a demon, it's sharing a house with a murderous huge dog possessed by a demon. His dog reacts in turn with a low, familiar growl: I Killed your Grandfather.

Heinousness

This creature isn't a confirmed mass-murderer, but it's still despicable on a rather personal scale. In short order, it killed an elderly man, went on to torment and plan to kill his grandson, brainwashed his parents into hating his dog just to hurt him, and then when expelled, stole the body of said dog while still planning to kill the kid. (And is also shown to keep hosts until they're dead and rotting) It acts with knowing cruelty and malice, and gives no reason other than it enjoys this. While it could be argued that it lacks moral agency as a demon, it shows clear agency and cunning in how it tries to manipulate humans.

Verdict

Low body count aside, this Feathered Fiend is a chilling villain and pretty darn murderous for an obscure kids' book villain. [tup]

Later i'll move onto the other story, An Apple A Day.

It has a body count of one and one attempted. That is utterly standard for demons in fiction.

That does not go past horror Baseline.

Anyone know what happened to the Mai Hime candidates? All of them except Tomoe were cut and never put up, but I cannot find anything in which they were rejected. Were they simply never EP-ed? Because I could do them.

[tup] Meliadus. Haven't proposed in a while, so...

What is the work? Killing Morph is a Psychological Horror work that is best described as a "slasher manga". The story follows Madoka, an Ordinary High-School Student who ends up witnessing a massacre at Ikebukuro; the killer is subsequently arrested but Madoka begins seeing realistic visions of the killer everywhere, she's apparently suffering from PTSD, right? Nope, the survivors are sharing the exact same symptoms, and worst of all, the murders are still happening despite the killer's imprisonment, and now the survivors are getting targeted. The police initially believes that a Jack the Ripoff is on the loose, but the truth is far more twisted. Together with La Résistance and Honda, Madoka has to uncover the mystery behind the killer and stop his reign of terror. The manga has finished its "Part 1", but the series is on an indenifite hiatus thanks to the creator having a falling out with the publisher, and now the latest segment is treated as the "Final Chapter". Killing Morph features one of the most depraved villains in modern manga history, I present you...

Who is he? Morph, or simply M, was once a lonely but intelligent sociopath plagued by an urge to hurt others and a sense of detachment from the world. Deciding to blame humanity for his own issues and declaring war on mankind, Morph burned his own face and pulled out his teeth to erase his past, wearing a sack over his head to cover the self-inflicted wounds. That alone would make him another forgettable slasher villain, the surprise? Morph won the Superpower Lottery; not only does he possess a Healing Factor, Morph also mastered an ancient power called Bilocation, Morph can create copies of himself, and these copies teleport through the eyesight of others, but any damage done to them will go back to his main body. Intentionally committing a massacre in broad daylight to wreak havoc from the safety of his cell, his first killing spree took the lives of ten people. Once in jail, Morph quickly disposes of the police chief by savagely beating him to near-death and attempts to do the same with Honda. Slowly becoming more and more obsessed with Madoka, Morph tries everything at his disposal to break her spirit, including: killing people in front of her, decapitating her doctor and framing another patient to cancel her therapy sessions, and even taking selfies alongside the corpses of her only two friends before using the bodies to create "art".

Realizing that Honda could be a nuisance to his plans, Morph takes advantage of his copies to commit another massacre just to mess with him. Eventually discovering Morph's hideout, Madoka and an uninvited guest, a reporter, go to investigate; turns out Morph isn't very fond of animals either, as he impaled countless of them and put their heads on display. The reporter finds more evidence of his crimes in the form of grotesque trophies and a vast collection of books about religion, philosophy and psychology. Morph also keeps the rotting corpse of a girl in the corner of his library, we don't have any idea of who this girl is, but the reporter assumes she's another one of Morph's victims; Morph personally had a twisted affection for the girl, enough to keep her skeletal remains for himself and decorate her corpse with flowers and a portrait of her. So Morph is capable of love? This "positive" side of him is quickly subverted when Morph states that Madoka and the girl both "smell the same", Morph believes that Madoka is Not So Different and thinks of her as a potential killer, this being the root of his obsession. Finally confronted by Madoka after killing her friends, she gets the upper hand and manages to subdue him, Morph then reveals his intention to let Madoka kill him and "end his loneliness" after having dreamed about his death at her hands, he specifically wants Madoka to kill him just because he desires to be her first victim, she obviously refuses his offer.

After a group of Morph worshippers led by Noriko, another psycho with Bilocation powers, wipe out an entire hotel and kill Madoka's parents to catch Morph's attention, Morph shows up to crash their party and slaughters his own cult, why? Morph is a firm believer in The Only One Allowed to Defeat You, a Big Bad Wannabe like Noriko trying to kill Madoka instead of him is an insult. Noriko proves to be no match for her god and Morph tries to corrupt Madoka into killing Noriko, her first kill; he fails again but slices off Noriko's hands. In a subsequent example of Evil vs. Evil, a violent criminal and his motorcycle gang arrive at the hotel to combat Morph, forcing Madoka and Morph to join forces; one of Morph's copies is badly damaged in the process and Morph has to be transferred to a police hospital, but his regenerative abilities eventually restore his body. After sharing a touching moment with Madoka and protecting her from the gang, Morph gets a Heel–Face Door-Slam and summons an army of clones to butcher them, much to Madoka's disgust. Back at the hospital, Madoka simply grabs a gun and walks into Morph's room, shooting at him several times; Morph congratulates her and declares that he has finally accepted the truth: Madoka is anything but an illusion, before seemingly dying. The End?

Mitigating Factors? As you may have noticed, Morph has a couple of potential mitigating qualities throughout the manga, and he's always finding a way to subvert them. Morph tries to paint himself as a Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds who admittedly wants to "crush the world" for not understanding him, even shedding a single tear during his Motive Rant and revealing that he once prayed to God before giving in to despair, buuuut Morph never tries to atone for his crimes in the present and takes sadistic delight in causing pain to random people For the Evulz. So yeah, committing murder after murder just because normal people don't understand your sociopathy? I don't think that's pitiable; his depravity is best shown when one of his victims is found dismembered and a police investigator concludes that he was "most likely naked and playing around in the sea of blood and flesh. My guess is this is how he gets off."

Heinous? Should I even say? The guy is a superpowered Serial Killer and wannabe Omnicidal Maniac with a double-digit bodycount. His only rival here is Noriko, and even she is an ant compared to her god.

Conclusion? Up to you guys.
