Image Links Clean-up and Maintenance

I recently cleaned some dead links from Technicolor Fire.

ImageLinks.Cupcakes is a thing. The images themselves are fine ^note  At least according to the descriptions. I'm not going to click the links given the contents of the fic , but we don't have Image Links pages for works. Should it be cut, or should we leave it because it isn't harming the wiki?

We do allow image links pages for works, actually. There's ImageLinks.My Hero Academia, ImageLinks.Dragon Ball, and ImageLinks.Metal Gear, and mod Willbyr has suggested moving excess character images to Image Links.

Hate Sink have quite a bit of a JAFAAC problem.

See, unlike Complete Monster where the villains depicted goes through a bit of a run-through in the forums before being added, here anyone can add their favorite villains without giving regards to context, so...

I already brought that up here.

If you ask me, Cupcakes is not fine. Only one image appears to be from the story itself. We should either rework or cut it.

Like with Overarching Villain, ImageLinks.Starter Villain is a bunch of JAFAAC images for a trope that doesn't have a page image.

Looks like that can be cut.

I decided to go through ImageLinks.Hate Sink and oh boy is it bad.

• There are villains that you just can't hate... Then there's this asshole. Just shows a face of the guy nothing else, Cut.
• Alfrid◊ from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, whose eyebrows and teeth are just as nasty as his personality. Just shows a face of the guy nothing else, Cut.
• Blaise Debeste◊ from Ace Attorney Investigations 2. Maybe this can be kept if only for the fact he is burning something
• The Bible:
  • The Sodomites◊ from the Book of Genesis, mobbing Lot's residence. I don't think Hate Sink can apply to an entire group.
  • Haman the Agagite◊ from the Book of Esther, forcing people to bow to him. This can probably stay.
• Eric Cartman from South Park, pretending to be mentally challenged to participate in the Special Olympics. Relies to much on the caption to understand what is going on, Cut.
• Malty Melromarc◊ from The Rising Of The Shield Hero cruelly taunting Naofumi after falsely accusing him of attempting to rape her. Relies to much on the caption to understand what is going on, Cut.
• Steely Dan using Jotaro as a scapegoat for shoplifting◊ in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. Relies too much on the caption to understand what is going on.
• Dolores Jane Umbridge from Harry Potter. Just shows a face of Umbridge nothing else, Cut.
• Suguru Kamoshida from Persona 5. Just shows a face of the guy nothing else, Cut.
• Lila Rossi◊ smugly threatening to ruin Marinette's life in Miraculous Ladybug. Relies to much on the caption, Cut.
• Two of the three Orphan Alley bullies◊ laughing at poor Fievel as the fat one throws straw at him in An American Tail. This might be able to stay as it does show them doing something.
• Shou Tucker from Fullmetal Alchemist. Just shows a face of the guy nothing else, also the wrong version of him, Cut.
• Prince Charmless... er Charmles◊ from Dragon Quest VIII. Just shows a face of the guy nothing else, Cut.
• Lotso◊ from Toy Story 3, notably loathed by the fans for his truly hideous act of leaving the toys to be burn in the incinerator. Just shows a face of the guy nothing else, Cut.
• Judge Claude Frollo◊ from The Hunchback of Notre Dame from his transition from a Likable Villain to a Complete Monster. Just shows a face of the guy nothing else, Cut.

Considering this has had two example purges maybe locking this would be for the best.

I can't send it straight to the Cut List as it does seem to have some ok images, but I will get rid of the clearly bad ones if nobody objects.

Agreed. This trope seems like it is impossible to illustrate.

Are you talking about Starter Villain? I think that would probably require a comic image. I cutlisted ImageLinks.Starter Villain.

Regarding ImageLinks.Hate Sink, is the collage in the first example OK? I know image macros aren't allowed on pages, but are they fine on Image Links? For Kamoshida, this and/or this could work as could Steely Dan using Jotaro as a bridge.◊

I think Image Links pages need to follow the same rules, those images seem okay for the Hate Sink one.

To me, we can't illustrate Hate Sink.

Agreed, Hate Sink is too nebulous a concept to make for a good IL page.

The same applies to Ms. Fanservice. I suggest we pull the image and cut the image link page.

There seems to be a hardcore X-Files fan on the Ms. Fanservice page who's adament on spamming links with an entire gallery dedicated to Dana Scully.

I'm not sure if cutting the entire page for Hate Sink and Ms. Fanservice is needed it is possible to illustrate the tropes or at least enough its just tropers keep putting bad examples.

Ms. Fanservice is definitely illustratable, we just need to purge NSFW content. Hate Sink OTOH...I'm not sure it can be captured in a single picture.

Considering that Complete Monster is able to be captured in a image I don't see why Hate Sink could not, if it shows a character doing something that would make you hate them it does a good enough job.

Thing is, any Hate Sink suggestion would likely just illustrate something like Jerkass or Kick the Dog instead. CM examples suffer something similar and I can't say most of them fully capture the essence of the trope, but at least those ones need to show really objectively awful acts. A Hate Sink is too broad, though (which goes back to the Trope Talk discussion).

Honestly, maybe table the Hate Sink page issue until that discussion wraps up.

I think I could have posted this earlier, but it doesn't seem to me like this thread is always really a good thing?

I don't think that Image Links was always supposed to have images be as illustrative as the main page, just overall show what people think are a good examples of a trope and not have to clog up the wiki/examples list. Image Links Wiki states "On these pages, you can post links to what you think are great examples of a given trope." without really talking about illustrativeness and this thread deals with the issue of why they allow JAFAAC on it. It is a bit old though, but it still may hold up to at least some extent.

Sure, remove/fix dead link and NSFW-related issues, but I believe the people's concerns here may be unwarranted in some cases. It just seems like this namespace should probably be kept used as a repository for images we won't use for the main page as is.

WarJay, what, if any, problems do you see with ImageLinks.Hate Sink as it currently exists? I added my suggested JoJo and Persona 5 images, as well as the collage of different villains. Are Image Macros allowed on Image Links pages?
