Unreleased Work Page Cleanup (Speculation, Spoilers, ZCE etc.)

Go To

This is a thread for checking up on pages for works that have not been released yet, to make sure that they are not straying into rampant speculation or posting crazy behind the scenes spoilers. You can bring both individual examples or entire pages to attention here.

In extreme cases, any page can be locked, but hopefully that won't be necessary.

(As these pages often are hit with zero-context examples and shoehorning as well, all four - speculation, spoilers, ZCEs, and shoehorning may get addressed simultaneously.)

The policy governing this effort is Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work. Cleanup is being tracked using the Unreleased Works sandbox.

All pages for unreleased works should include a %% comment at the top of the page, confirming the policy and linking to this thread and the Administrivia page. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the example provided here, but this provides a template to work with.

Template for the unreleased work comment
%%
%% Speculative troping is not allowed on TV Tropes.
%%
%% We trope what DOES happen in works, not what MIGHT happen or is LIKELY to happen.
%%
%% For unreleased works where all we have to go on is advertising and other supplemental materials, we have some detailed guidelines, which can be found at Administrivia/CreatingAWorkPageForAnUnreleasedWork.
%%
%% NOTE - these rules also mean that unreleased works should only have one page image, and that image should NOT be changed again until the work is released.

[up]Badass Biker fails to explain the "badass" part; the rest are good enough. (I've long since given up on making the FFVII pages into anything coherent; these should at least last us until release.)

[up] I've revised the Badass Biker entry and come up with a few more while I was at it. Hope they suffice.

OK, how do these look:

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: In the Theme Song Trailer, Sephiroth effortlessly cuts through a metal catwalk with his Masamune — a nodachi longer than he is tall.

  • Adaptation Name Change: Don Corneo's pet monster was named "Aps" in the original version of Final Fantasy VII, but is shown in the playable demo to have been renamed "Abzu" in the remake.

  • Badass Biker: One of the new characters is Roche, a renegade SOLDIER 3rd Class obsessed with motorcycles, high speeds, and battling strong opponents — earning him the nickname "Speed Demon". In the Theme Song Trailer, he is shown picking a fight with both Shinra's security officers and Avalanche, and is particularly interested in duelling Cloud.
Roche: Hahahahaha! Aren't we havin' a wonderful time kickin' the hornet's nest! You know what I want... a second dance. Just the two of us...

  • Blade Lock: In the Theme Song Trailer, Cloud is shown leaping at Sephiroth with his Buster Sword in an attempt to cut him in half, only for Sephiroth to nonchalantly block his attack with the Masamune as a Mythology Gag to the beginning of their duel in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: President Shinra, CEO of the Shinra Electric Power Company, is shown in the Theme Song Trailer and Twitter posts to be a greedy and ruthless tyrant who rules over Midgar through fear, crushing those who oppose him with his corporation's private army and the Turks.

  • The Don: The Theme Song Trailer shows off Don Corneo, a lecherous crime-lord in Sector 6's slums who takes a new woman as his "bride" each night before feeding them to his pet monster Abzu when he's done having his way with them.

  • Hopeless Suitor: In the playable demo, Jessie quickly establishes that she finds Cloud very attractive and flirts with him throughout the bombing mission, but he either ignores her comments or responds with annoyance.

  • Humanoid Abomination: The Theme Song Trailer shows off some glimpses of Jenova, a planet-eating alien entity that manifests as a female-looking humanoid. One of her more monstrous boss forms is shown at the end of the trailer as well.

  • Left the Background Music On: In the opening cutscene of the playable demo, while Aerith is crouched in an alley examining a broken mako pipe, an eerie female voice interjects into the background music singing "Estuans Interius",note  and she is visibly alarmed and looks around before hurriedly exiting the alley.

  • Mad Scientist: The Theme Song Trailer shows off Professor Hojo, the head of the Shinra Corporation's Science Research Division and mastermind behind the SOLDIER Program, observing Cloud's interactions with Sephiroth and gleefully stating that his Reunion Theory hypothesis has been proven correct.

  • Middle-Management Mook: The Theme Song Trailer introduces several of Shinra's department heads, most of whom are ruthlessly ambitious and cruel:
    • Heidegger — the Shinra Company's Head of Public Safety (read: the military) — is shown advocating for the use of extreme force against Avalanche and disparaging his more benevolent colleague Reeve Tuesti for protesting the civilian casualties that would ensue.
    • Scarlet — the Shinra Company's sadistic Head of Weapons Development — is shown forcing a Shinra security officer to serve as a footstool while she reclines in an opulent chair.
    • Palmer — the gluttonous head of the Shinra Company's space program — is shown gushing about how much he loves to put butter in his tea.
    • Professor Hojo — the head of the Shinra Corporation's Science Research Division — is stated on the game's Twitter page to have no regard for human life in his highly unethical experiments, and is shown spying on Cloud following his brief clash with Sephiroth and gleefully remarking that his hypothesis has been proven correct.

  • Mythology Gag:
    • In one of the playable demo's cutscenes, Heidegger remarks that Avalanche may be the same group that once tried to assassinate President Shinra, a reference to the first iteration of Avalanche attempting to do so in Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII.
    • In the Theme Song Trailer, Sephiroth blocks Cloud's attack in the same manner as the beginning of their duel in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

  • Skull for a Head: A Freeze-Frame Bonus glimpse of Jenova's boss form in the Theme Song Trailer shows her face is a fanged skull with sunken eyes.

  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: In the playable demo, Cloud and Barrett spend most of the opening mission trading barbed comments, with Barret growing increasingly frustrated and angry at Cloud's apathetic and disdainful attitude towards the Planet's suffering and Avalanche's mission.
Barret: [in the middle of a Motive Rant] You gonna stand there and pretend you can't hear the planet crying out in pain? I know you can!
Cloud: [unimpressed] You really hear that?
    Barret: Damn straight I do!
    Cloud: Get help.
    Barret: Say that again!
Cloud: I'd worry less about the planet and more about the next five seconds. Save the screaming for later.

  • Sword Drag: When Roche challenges Cloud to a duel in the Theme Song Trailer, he's shown dragging his longsword along the ground.

I really think Tenet should be axed. We don't even know any of the characters' names and Nolan likes to make misleading trailers. Maybe if there's another trailer that puts more of it in context or if someone has a description from the prologue that played in IMAX in front of Star Wars.

There has been an update to the [[Administrivia page, based on some feedback in the appropriate thread.

* These pages should still follow the guidelines of How to Create a Work's Page, i.e. there have to be at least three non-speculative, trope examples with proper context.
  • These pages must have an announced name and official advertising/pre-release materials.
  • Because of the wide variety of advertising/pre-release materials, some mediums have stricter requirements than others to be acceptable for troping.
    • Works in the following mediums need only pre-release material.
      • New media (web animation, web comics, web video, etc.)
      • Literature, manga, comic books/strips
      • Music, theatre/live performance
    • Works in the following mediums need both pre-release material and release schedulingnote
      • Film
      • TV/animation
      • Anime
    • Video games (whether released on a console or online service) must either have pre-release material and release scheduling or gameplay footage.note

Now that there's gameplay footage and details about the game, is it fair to re-create this page? https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/BaldursGateIII

YMMV.Onward is a bit of a disaster zone.

  • The It's the Same, Now It Sucks! entry states that two characters are bashed for merely visually looking similar to other Pixar characters. I'd wait until the movie comes out to make sure the bashable similarities actually go further than just visual appearances (e.g. I don't see people bashing Chrono Trigger because Akira Toriyama drew the characters in a similar style to his other work).
  • The Memetic Mutation entry is very bloated.
    • One series of nattery third-level subbullets got focused more on bashing Disney over not having enough LGBT characters being main characters than how the relevant part of the work was a meme, and got reported to ATT over that.
    • Another second-level bullet bashed Pixar and other animation companies for making sequels, with no memes explained whatsoever.
    • Another second-level bullet contained an unwarranted jab at Bright.
  • The Tainted by the Preview entry is currently stealth speculation over whether over the tone of the upcoming movie and needs to go.

It's just the latest animation style controversy, like how an absurd amount of people got mad at a face-morph gif of cartoon characters with similar faces a few years back and never got over it.

I'd comment out It's the Same, Now It Sucks! and trash everything else.

Having seen Onward, which has been officially released as of today, I noticed there was some back-and-forth on the YMMV page, seemingly in part due to someone able to see an advance screening. There's a commented-out entry for Designated Villain, in particular, which I will bring up here for the sake of having something to cite:

    Spoilers
  • Designated Villain: The film has No Antagonist since the main conflict is the brothers trying to resurrect their father. The closest thing to a bad guy is the Curse that protects the Phoenix Gem taking the form of a dragon made out of Ian’s high school. While it does try to kill the brothers, it was just following its magical programming. Not sure what something that amounts to a needlessly deadly automaton has in terms of not being malicious than would let it qualify.
    • One could argue that the pawn shop owner, Grecklin, could count since while not giving the sword to Laurel and Corey in a huge emergency situation is rather unkind, she was just doing her job of running the pawn shop. Definitely not designated. She was originally offering the sword for a reasonable $10 (well, I don't think the currency is actually named) but upon Corey mentioning that it was fortunate due to how much they need it, Grecklin instantly ups the price to $10,000
    • Same goes for the biker pixies, who have little bearing in the plot. ZCE, but besides, the pixies are at best needlessly aggressive to everyone they encounter, having been introduced tearing up a gas station. They may be justified in being upset at their motorcycles being knocked down when parked, but that's more a case of "they're still bad guys as shown by their prior behavior, they just aren't 100% in the wrong."

nombretomado suggested I post this here for vetting:

Final Fantasy VII Remake:

  • All There in the Manual: In the leadup to the game's release, the Final Fantasy VII Remake Twitter page began posting profiles revealing details about the characters and locations.

  • Wretched Hive: While Midgar as a whole is run by the totalitarian Shinra Electric Power Company, Wall Market stands out. Despite its colorful presentation as an an entertainment quarter ostensibly free of Shinra's control, it is ruled over by the lecherous mobster Don Corneo, who marries a different woman each night before feeding them to his pet monster Abzu. According to the game's Twitter page, Wall-Market was built atop the ruins of the collapsed Sector 6 plate, and many of the businesses and establishments — namely the gambling dens, Honeybee Inn nightclub, Madame M's hand-massage parlor, and the Corneo Colosseum gladiator arena — are in the Don's pocket.

The All There in the Manual example is an interesting test case for the Word of God rule, because it doesn't actually claim any of the WoG material is true, only that it exists.

About All There in the Manual... maybe I'm misunderstanding the trope or the context given, but how do we know that the details shown on Twitter won't also be in the game itself?

All There in the Manual requires the work to be released. Wretched Hive does not make a citation. Remove both.

[up]They're not on the page yet. I agree All There in the Manual shouldn't be there yet because we don't know if the information will be in the game itself, but do we really have to strictly enforce the citation policy this close to release? Also, I'm not sure if it's going to be unlocked even after release, as the original Final Fantasy VII page is locked because of shipping wars.
