Yeah, there are certain dialogue tropes that are specifically for character quirks, and those would be listed on the Characters subpages. Everything else would go in the main article.

I don't know if this has been posted before, but I have a general question: are Kick the Dog, Licked by the Dog and Pet the Dog considered character tropes?

Those are plot tropes, not character tropes. An argument could be made for a particular character repeatedly employing them to the point where they are known for petting dogs everywhere they go (figuratively, not literally) but it would be difficult to justify.

This is probably the last wall-of-text series of questions that I'd ask before doing a massive moving of tropes to the main articles. Apologies if this has been already asked before but... regarding characters and their weapons/moves/abilities:

  • It's understandable that a weapon/ability trope can remain on the character folder if it's a core/recurring/iconic/intrinsic trend for them, right? Say, the recurring protagonist always has a BFS in all of his appearances/official artwork/games across the entire series...
    • Does this also include ability tropes that only the specific character can do? For example, there's only one playable character who can do grapple moves, the Grapple Move trope can remain in his character folder/page, right?
  • But what if the series-recurring character wields a type of weapon that only appears in one specific game? Should that weapon's trope(s) be moved to the main article/game page instead?
    • Characters.Devil May Cry Nero runs on this kind of dilemma - He appears in only two games thus far, but his second appearance (VideoGame.Devil May Cry 5) introduced a lot of weapon/ability tropes that were not in his first appearance (VideoGame.Devil May Cry 4)... However, his character page contains several gameplay tropes that are only exclusive to DMC5. This brings the issues of redundancy and inconsistency. Tropes like Whip It Good are listed in both Nero's character page and in the main DMC5 page, but only one page has the better-explained context. How am I going to deal with this?
  • Would this be a good edit reason when moving several trope examples away from the Character pages?
    • "Some event/plot/dialogue/ability/weapon tropes would have to be moved to the main article/game pages, especially if they're not a recurring trend or intrinsic trait for the character."

[up] I would say yes, with the note that this really comes down on which tropes qualify as character tropes and which ones are plot/narrative masking as character. To use your example with Nero, I think tropes that only apply to 5 can still fall on his character page, just like there's probably some tropes that only apply to 4 on his page. Whip It Good and similar weapons tropes fall under Weapon-Based Characterization (I think?) so those usually are allowed on character pages, with the expectation that the example points out how the weapon characterizes the character and is not just "X wields Y weapon."

E: Also that sounds like a good edit reason. [tup] I usually just note that I'm moving non-character tropes back to the main page.

One more question that I'm not sure applies to this thread but is about character pages, if there's like an "In General" or other "Tropes for the Group As a Whole" folder, should tropes duplicated in the character specific folder be deleted, or would it be better to remove the trope from the group folder and leave all instances on the character specific folders?

Depends.

If it's something that needs how it applies to the other characters to make sense as an example (such as Five-Man Band, Red Oni, Blue Oni or Theme Naming) then write a group example. If it's a trope than they all have separate examples for (like they all have an individual Catchphrase rather than a group catchphrase), then it can go in the individual entries.

Ofc, this is assuming the "In general" folder is needed. More often than not it's a bit superfluous.

Would What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway? and Heart Is an Awesome Power count as character tropes? I've been cleaning up Characters.Magical Girl Raising Project and these two tropes pop up frequently (and death tropes, but I'm already aware those don't count). I'm inclined to say "no", but figured I'd ask before I began moving them.

I'd say story, unless a character/faction has a habit of paying evil unto evil or kicking sons of bitches or morality pets.

Did the thread ever come to a conclusion on whether "Pairing" or contrast tropes are character tropes? I'm thinking Happily Married, Huge Guy, Tiny Girl, Betty and Veronica, etc. I constantly see these on character pages with "X to <other Character>'s Y" duplicate entries.

I hate duplicate group/duo entries; they're redundant and a pain in the ass to wick clean. I put them on the main page myself.

I've always viewed Foil tropes and their sub-tropes as story tropes rather than character tropes, but I notice it's very mixed where we see them appear. Some end up on the work pages and others on the character pages.

[up] Oh, I've always seen it as a character trope, given that its main purpose is to highlight the other character's traits. I do see the argument that it could be more narrative oriented though.

Crystal Dragon Jesus is about fictional religions, but if its used to talk about the "messiah" character, does that make it character or is it still too focused on the depiction of the religion?

I wouldn't say Foil is a character trope. It's very existence is dependent not just on having two characters, but the interactions between them.

A Foil is a character, though. It refers to a character, not events. You could say "Alice is a foil to Bob."

The Antagonist exists in relation to a protagonist and is defined by what they do in opposition to them. Would you say The Antagonist isn't a character?

The Smart Guy is defined not only by traits they have, but how they exist in relation to others in a group dynamic, same as Foil. Would you say The Smart Guy isn't a character trope?
