Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

We good for voting on Evelyn? Can we tally and call it a day? I really don't give a shit what happens but I tire of her being questioned and the inevitable pouring in of "That movie wasn't as good as the first, this is 100% a relevant comment to the candidate's standing!"

Edit: If that looks like a shot at you Tell it wasn't, seeing you vote to keep her just reminded me we needed to count votes.

Yes to Hayato and Compress.

Ok for today's Runescape effort post number 12, let me present definitely one of the more overall humorous characters. First, a small bit of backstory on the Penguins.

The sapient penguins of Gielinor once lived peaceful lives from their city of Palingrad on the frozen northern continent of Acheron. They maintained an uneasy truce with their mortal enemies, the polar bears (also sapient), until the far more brutal Walrus and his seals (again sapient) forced the penguins into slavery. Conflict between the polar bears and seals led to them signing a treaty to give the former the land and the latter the seas, but left nothing for the penguins. This led to the Pescallion, the penguin's emperor, to formally organize his people into a effective fighting force he soon called the KGP, the Killer Gentoo Penguins, to overthrow their oppressors. Alas, the new found success they had grew to corrupt the penguins and they soon plotted domination of the rest of the world. While the Pescallion is a so far unseen Greater-Scope Villain, his son serves as The Heavy for the Penguin quest series and is a far more visible threat.

Who is Pescaling Pax?

Pescaling Pax is the head of research and development for the KGP and the leader of the penguins' southern most base, the Iceberg. From the Iceberg, Pax trains his forces to be surprisingly skilled spies by building them an artificial agility course to better their physical abilities, teaches them various forms of disguise, and enforces military discipline to shape them into crack agents. On a personal level, he has his own silly and amusing quirks. He exclaims himself to be very manipulative and clever with a great knowledge on many subjects. He also happens to always wear a cute little crown and cape while striking a regal pose, obvious signs that he considers himself more worthy to be ruler than his father. Anyways, on one mission he sends an agent to free the penguins trapped at the Ardougne Zoo, which a slip up by an agent catches the attention of zookeeper Larry who grows suspicious and paranoid of them.

In the first quest, Cold War, Larry hires the player to travel with him to the Iceberg to build a cubby hole to spy on the penguins. A confused adventurer plays along and sees them performing secret signals while on patrol and and a vindicated Larry teaches them a design to build a clockwork penguin suit to infiltrate their base buried in the ice. With the suit, he magically shrinks the player to fit inside and has the player go a string of tasks to learn secret passcodes and eventually learn an emote based password system Pax designed to scrutinize his agents. Initial infiltration simply shows the penguins trying out methods to fly, but further investigation shows the vast army they are building. Working with the penguin "bards" Ping and Pong to create a distraction, the player is able to walk right into the command center to peek at the invasion plans. Except this was something Pescaling Pax planned around, as he had anti-magical security set up which enlarges the player and ejects them from the suit. He has the player thrown in a cage with vicious monsters while also confiscating the clockwork suit to study its design. The player fights their way out and rendezvous with Larry to explain what was discovered, and the quest ends with a shot of a giant mechanical penguin being constructed in the base.

In the first sequel quest, The Hunt for Red Raktuber (Raktuber being a month in-game), Larry again asks the player to investigate a giant penguin he saw submerging off the coast and somehow find a way to sabotage it. The player builds another suit to infiltrate the base and is tasked with interrogating a captured penguin who worked on the submarine under one Captain Marlon who defected from Pescaling Pax. The player learns how to contact the sub and further in the base meets a group of captured dwarves who were forced to transform the giant clockwork penguin into a submersible craft. In exchange for their own penguin suits to escape in, the dwarves teach the player how to sabotage the sub and the player also steals a telegram revealing the subs most recent location. Disguising themselves as the captured penguin, the player infiltrates the submarine and uses the technique the dwarves taught them to reroute the submarine back to Larry's position on the mainland. Except...it doesn't.

In perhaps the greatest example of Beware the Silly Ones in the entire game, the Red Raktuber is rerouted to a barren island where Pax is awaiting the player with a bound and gagged Larry at his side. He explains that while he was capturing Larry, he allowed the player to have the run of his base and do all the leg work to capture his missing sub. The dwarves were willingly working with Pescaling Pax the entire time and he had them teach the player to reroute the submarine into the trap while also handing over more suits for study. Pax has Larry carted off to the penguin Motherland for a thorough interrogation and reeducation and strips the player of their inventory and spellbook to prevent them from teleporting off the island. He and his agents then leave on the submarine while leaving the player to die a slow death on the deserted island. Bordering on Deus ex Machina, the player does manage to find a polar bear disguised as a palm tree working for the PBJ, Polar Bears for Justice, who were working with Larry to thwart the penguins' plans. The polar bear tracked the player's movements and swims them back to shore, and ultimately exclaims they will help rescue Larry some day in the future.

I put the dialogue of the above encounter in a folder here if anyone wants to read it. It gives great insight into Pescaling Pax's character and is a pretty fun read.

    Pescaling Pax confronts the Adventurer
  • Player: Yes! I did it, I disabled the submarine. Larry? This doesn't look like Yanille. Where are we? Larry? Ugh, I can't see anything in this suit.
  • Pescaling Pax: I'm afraid Larry can't speak to you just now. A gag is preventing him.
  • Player: What? Where did you come from? What did you do to Larry?
  • Pescaling Pax: One question at a time, please. I'll start with 'Where did you come from?' I can't resist enlightening your puny brain. After our last encounter, when I took that clever suit of yours, we have been hard at work. We constructed this submarine, and had great plans for what we could do with it. But the captain went a bit mad and stole the submarine. Fortunately, I realized that you and your intrepid explorer friend here were sniffing around again. I decided to let you do all the leg work for us, and track down the submarine.
  • Player: But not everything went according to your plans! The dwarves helped me. It's just too bad you caught up with us so quickly, or we would have gotten away with it.
  • Pescaling Pax: You humans are naïve. Do you really think I'd let you speak to my top researchers if I wasn't sure they were loyal to me?
  • Player: But...
  • Dwarf: Yes, you were rather gullible. We even got these suits out of the deal! It was a simple matter of telling you we were teaching you to disable the submarine, when really you were simply recalibrating the end destination. You told it to come to this deserted island, where we've been awaiting your arrival.
  • Player: But how could you? Why would the dwarves join forces with the penguins? Can't you see it won't benefit you in the long run?
  • Dwarf: Not all dwarves have joined with us. Our small group fractured from our main party, the Red Axe. We got tired of waiting for our great leader to strike against you humans. The penguins are much more eager to achieve their world domination.
  • Pescaling Pax: I'm growing bored. Say your last goodbyes to your explorer friend. We'll be taking him to the Motherland for a long interrogation session. You, on the other hand, will meet your fate here, on this deserted island. I hope you enjoy your slow death.
  • Player: Don't worry, Larry! I'll get off this island and rescue you! I swear it.
  • Larry: Mumble mumble mumble MUMBLE!
  • Player: That's right; you tell him, Larry! I'll make sure the penguins' evil plans never come to fruition.
  • Pescaling Pax: I love the empty threats of humans. Time to go. So long, [Player]. It's been fun manipulating you.

Is he magnificent?

Pescaling Pax has quite an ego, considers himself a clever manipulator, and rather adorably wears a crown and cape to pretend to be a king, but ultimately proves he's rather validated in his beliefs. He gets the better of the better of the player and their allies both times they meet, with the second time being one of the most impressive gambits in the entire game. He has a humorous charm to his character and a flair for the dramatic and proves quite worthy of being called a skilled Chess Master.

Is he a bastard?

While there are some measures of Tragic Villain to him and the penguins, he's still a bad guy plotting world domination that is willing to leave the player to a slow death.

Any mitigating factors?

Like I said before, he's got quite an ego bordering on smugness, but his actual success in game ascends him past Smug Snake straight into Awesome Ego territory.

Final Verdict?

A fantastic example of Beware the Silly Ones and solid contender for this trope I say. [tup]

Got a potential Regular Show candidate. For those who don't know, Regular Show is about two slacker park groundskeepers, Mordecai and Rigby, and the countless bizarre situations they find themselves involved in. The episode Temp Check is about Rigby, wanting to find a way to not do work but still get a paycheck, hires a temp to do his work for him while paying said temp a tiny fraction of his paycheck. However, said temp isn't quite the doormat Rigby was expecting.

Who is he? What does he do?

Doug "The Doppelganger" Shablowski is an otter with the ability to shapeshift into a person the more he finds out about them, mimicing not just their appearance, but their voice, mannerisms, and physical hinderances flawlessly. A serial Con Artist, Doug would regularly be employed as a temp only to steal the identity of the person who hired them and take what should be their paycheck for himself. Whenever the authorities would close in, Doug would escape.

Being hired by Rigby when he advertises how he's looking for a temp, Doug presents himself as a friendly, funny, and hard-working individual. Enduring Rigby's shitty treatment of him, Doug befriends Mordecai almost immediately with both his friendly persona and his skill in impersonating Rigby. Rigby begins to grow jealous of Doug, and through spying on Doug and Mrodecai whenever they hang out, slowly notices how Doug is copying his appearance piece by piece from his hairstyle, to his tail, it happening just subtly enough so that Mordecai doesn't notice. Eventually, he looks enough like Rigby to pass as him to both Benson and Mordecai, taking Rigby's paycheck for himself right before Rigby can ask for it.

Rigby confronts and fires Doug, so Doug fully shapeshifts into Rigby and tries to kill him so that he can fully replace the racoon. Rigby and Doug's struggle leads Mordecai to find out about Doug being a shapeshifting con artist but he and the workers don't know which one is the real Rigby. Benson and Mordecai come up with a series of tests to determine which is the real Rigby, but both Doug and Rigby prove to be equal in about all of them. Until the triva challenge. Doug shows that he did his research, knowing about Rigby's favorite foods, and greatest fears, which end up in him winning the trivia test, the rest of the gang briefly believing Doug to be the real Rigby. However, Mordecai exposes a mistake from Doug. When he offers a celebratory hug, Doug accepts, something that Mordecai and Rigby never actually do (they treat it like a game of chicken to see who bails first). Doug gets caught by Skips when he tries to run, and is arrested by the police. As he's being taken away, Dough takes defeat well and offers Rigby some advice; how Rigby has a nice place, and good friends, so he has a lot to be thankful for, a warning to not end up like he did. (Rigby being Rigby blows it off though)

Is he magnificent? A bastard?

Yeah I'd say so. He's great at winning people over, and subtly steals the identity of his victims right in front of others while not getting noticed. He doesn't do anything needlessly petty or sadistic.

Any mitigating factors?

Eh. It seems that he'd always have to leave eventually whenever he stole somebody's identity in the past given how it's known how he's been doing this all over the country, but we don't really see them so we don't know if it was a matter of him messing up, or just a case of him choosing to move from mark to mark. Other than possibly that, not really. He gets tricked by Mordecai, but it doesn't make him come off as an idiot since it's simply a routine in their friendship that he didn't know about.

Final Thoughts?

Your call.

Second Getter Robo EP.

Setting?

Getter Robo Arc is the last entry of the original manga series of Ken Ishikawa. Featuring a new Getter Trio, they include Ryoma's son Takuma, Tahir's brother Baku and the half dinosaur son of Emperor Gore, Sho Kamui.

Who is Kamui?

A Half-Human Hybrid created for the Dinosaur Empire, Kamui was a success. However, after the end of the latest Dinosaur invasion, Professor Han received an order to "dispose of" test subjects - that is, to kill Kamui, his mother and other captured human women. Han couldn't bring himself to do that and managed to convince the new emperor to spare Kamui and his mother.

Hayato Jin negotiated a secret truce between humankind and Saurians where Hayato and Han agreed that Hayato would take Kamui to the Saotome Institute, where he would be safe from his older brother.

When Getter Arc was completed, with Kamui becoming part of the New Getter Team. After a while, Getter Arc was sent to Dinosaur Empire with a secret task: to protect the scientists as they are finishing the time machine, that will allow Getter to attack Andromeda Country in their own time and space. Gore III also threatened Kamui's mother to force Kamui to be The Mole, but when the time machine was completed, and Getter Arc traveled to the future. Then trio learned the truth behind Andromeda's attack: They wanted to destroy Earth to protect themselves.

Musashi Tomoe, revived by Getter Rays as commander of "relatively small" army, explained to Takuma, Kamui and Baku that future they're in is where Getter Emperor is leading humanity into to universal domination, causing the genocide of other sapient lifeforms in the process. Kamui connects the dots and realizes that his species is extinct too.

Musashi needed Arc's crew to aid him in the attack on Andromedans' stronghold because a time paradox and our protagonist agreed. Eventually, they send Kamui to a personal mission, as his biology gave him resistance to heat. Kamui was approached by Mc Donald, who confess that he does not want to escape but rather, send the planes to create Bug, a weapon capable to defeat the Getter.

Kamui accepts Mc Donald's last wish. Returning to his time, Kamui performs a coup to overthrown his brother,but refuses to execute him and instead, he becomes the Puppet King to him, declaring war on humanity and destroying many cities with his weapons with the final goal to erradicate humanity. He watches his own mother being killed in a clash

Kamui attacks the Saotome institute, personally murdering his mentor Shikishima after outsmarting him, with Shikishima laughing at Kamui's victory. Then, he corners Hayato and offers him mercy, shooting him by suggestion of Hayato himself and being emotionally affected for that.

Kamui completes Bug and destroy Humanity's armies and fights Takuma in Getter Arc, until the sudden appareance of the Shin Getter Dragon...

In the epilogue for the Anime, Kamui is seen arrested and rescued by Takuma and Baku, who offer him to reconciliate and fight back against a mysterious being with the form of the original Getter Robo...

Charisma?

Kamui is a no-nonsense guy. Cold, but hiding some genuine anger inside. He has issues with humans, who tend to mistrust him for his apparence. Kamui holds no grudge to humans tho, and instead, he genuinely respects the crew of the Saotome Laboratory.

For Dinosaurs however? Kamui is The Messiah, he is loved by a lot of people and when he pulls his coup, he gets a lot of higher ups to agree. And the feeling is mutual, Kamui is a Half-Human Hybrid, but he completely reject said side, completely identifying as a Dinosaur Empire subject that is loyal to his Empire, even if he knows that his brother is just a power hungry bastard blackmailing him.

When he decides to Kill All Humans, there is zero Fantastic Racism here, as Kamui saw the future where Humanity did wipe out his species using Getter Rays. And if we follow the anime, Kamui eventually reconciliates with the Getter Team as well.

Smart?

Quick thinking in battle. A lot of it as a good student of Hayato. When he storms the Saotome Institute, Hayato manages to evade a lot of traps set by Shikishima, with the Reluctant Mad Scientist praising him for being a good student.

Kamui's coup is swift and quick, using his brother to unify the factions to do as he says, making his coup look like a mutual work.

Bastard?

Kill All Humans. Nuff enough. He does it to save his species and the universe, but still. As Hayato said, Humans do not want to die.

Verdict?

You decide

Here's my write-up for Mr. Compress.

Atsuhiro Sako, better known as Mr. Compress, is one of the most composed members of the League of Villains. During the the attack on the Training Camp, he successfully kidnaps Katsuki Bakugo and even tries to kidnap Fumikage Tokoyami for the sake of converting them to the League. Compress is skilled in using his quirk to seal any object or person into a marble and carries multiple with him for almost any situation. During the Paranormal Liberation War, he breaks out of Best Jeanist's bind by putting his clothes in a marble and even maims himself to free his arm. Using this opportunity, he saves his beloved friends from capture, allowing them to remain at large to ensure that they see his vision of a better society come to fruition. Willing to risk his life for his allies, Mr. Compress stands as one of the narrative's bravest villains.

I have a new potential MB from a Bollywood film released in 1977:

The Work

Amar Akbar Anthony is a romantic comedy musical movie about three brothers separated as children and raised by different households - by a Hindu policeman, a Muslim tailor, and a Christian priest respectively. The candidate is their father - Kishanlal.

Who is the Candidate and what have they done

Kishanlal was the chauffeur for a crime boss named Robert. Having just been released from prison after taking the fall for an accident caused by his boss, he returns home to find that his wife has TB, his 3 kids are starving, and his family is penniless. Robert had promised that his family would be taken care of while he was in jail, so Kishanlal is understandably angry, and goes to confront him.

Robert shows No Sympathy towards his former chauffeur, and basically humiliates him. Kishanlal responds by shooting him in the chest (Robert only survives because he is wearing a bulletproof vest), then flees in of Roberts cars, managing to shake off his men as they give chase. He returns home to find a suicide note from his wife, who requests that he uses the money to take care of the kids. He gets his kids in the car and leaves them in a park near a statue, hoping to pick them up later after he shakes off Roberts men once and for all.

This is where everyone gets separated. Amar (the first kid) tries to run after the car, but is knocked down by Roberts men. Kishanlal's wife is struck by a branch and is subsequently blinded. The second kid leaves the third kid (a baby) to find food. The baby is found by a tailor, while the second kid falls asleep in front of a church. Kishanlal accidentally drives off the road and the car crashes and catches fire. He is presumed dead, but he survives and finds a crate of gold that was hidden in the car. He then returns to the park to find his kids missing.

22 years later, Kishanlal is a crime lord who has used the gold to build an empire for himself and destroy Roberts life. Kishanlal subjects him to the same humiliations he received from him. In addition, he had also kidnapped his daughter Jenny (when she was a baby), raised her as his niece, and sent her abroad for college. When Robert begs him to let him see his daughter, Kishanlal straight up refuses, saying that he wants Robert to feel the same pain he does. After a failed attempt at Kishanlal's life, Robert flees with a crate of gold and manages to regain some of his power.

Realizing that Robert will stop at nothing to get his daughter back, he pretends to greet another woman at the airport, causing Robert to kidnap her instead. He then greets the actual Jenny, and tells her that Robert is her father’s killer. He assigns her a bodyguard, who becomes creepy and holds her hostage, telling Robert that he has her. When Kishanlal comes over later, the bodyguard tells him that she went to see her boyfriend, but he discovers that he was lying when he sees the blinds moving (caused by a Bound and Gagged Jenny pulling at them to signal her presence). He responds by chloroforming the bodyguard and rescuing her.

Robert and his men arrive just in time to see the duo escape, and a chase ensues. Kishanlal stops at a point tells her to get out and hide behind a tree. This works and no one sees her till she steps back in surprise when a snake approaches her. Another chase ensues, Kishanlal is knocked out, and is saved by Akbar before Robert can finish him off. Meanwhile, Anthony takes Jenny to safety.

For the rest of the movie, he goes around looking for his biological children, and although he is in a jail cell when we last see him, he is just happy to be re-united with his family, and that Robert got his comeuppance.

Magnificence

When we first meet him, Kishanlal is an ordinary guy, and gets humiliated by his boss. However, he turns the tables on him after finding the gold crate. He is also able to prepare for anything Robert has planned. The failures he encounters occur due to variables out of his control. As for his emotions, the only time he truly breaks down is when he re-unites with his children, and in those cases it is Tears of Joy.

Bastardry

He takes great joy in Roberts humiliation and suffering, and in addition to ruining his business and raising his daughter, he successfully framed Robert as her father's killer. Despite this, he seems to genuinely care for Jenny and is happy to be reunited with his kids and wife.

Competition / Mitigating Factors

No competition. No one else in the movie has the same level or balance of magnificence and bastardry as Kishanlal
