Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

I'm currently trying to clean up the entire Characters page for 12 oz. Mouse; I've already fixed most spelling errors and identified some Zero-Context Examples, Word Cruft among other things that I'll eventually fix, but I'm struggling with one entry. Disregard the second entry because I already solved the problem (decided to cut the example entirely), but I'd appreciate any additional suggestions for it if possible.

For the first entry, I'm trying to move some information found on the Anti-Hero entry for a character to a separate, more fitting trope, but I'm not sure which one would fit: The Mole, Turncoat, Heel–Face Revolving Door or possibly another trope or a subversion of either since it mentions that the character was being forced to do certain types of work by the villains. Should the whole Anti-Hero entry be changed to another trope too? As of this writing, the text currently does not have any spoiler text, but because of the context surrounding it, I'm spoilering it in here.

Anti-Hero: While not truly evil, he is friends with Fitz; however, he is considered an anti-hero since he worked on the villains' side the whole time as Buzby was forced to bring Fitz back to Q109 to free Shark and RBM. Also, as another part of Shark's plan, Buzby was forced to kidnap Fitz and exchange minds to the mind-swapping chair to enter the real world. Despite this, he is still on the hero's side, joining forces with Fitz and co. to defeat Shark and RBM at the end of special.

For the second entry, this is listed as a trope for the character Peanut Cop; note the use of the word debatable. Is this really an example or not?

Anthropomorphic Food: Debatable, as he is shaped like a peanut, but doesn't otherwise resemble one.

Also not sure if this is the place for me to ask this here, but considering the amount of Death Tropes found in the sheet as well the fact it appears that one character can't be talked about without spoiling a lot about them (at least in regards to how they appear in the third season; honestly I'm not sure if they're a Walking Spoiler or not), should I make it a Spoilers Off sheet?

Just a question, does in entry from Characters.Ys VIII Lacrimosa Of Dana fit more under the listed trope or better as Stance System cause I feel like it fits the latter more.

  • Real-Time Weapon Change: In the past, Dana can rescue spirits which grant her additional forms that influence her abilities, attacks and resistances. They change her weapons.
    • "Iclucian" is her default form, a Slash-based style focused on attack skills and can douse out fires using her ice and wind abilities in this form. She wields dual crescent swords forged exclusively for her due to her short stature in this form. No other adult Eternians could wield those swords because they are too small for them. It has the best SP gain from charged attacks of all the forms.
    • "Gratika", a slow, yet powerful mode with Strike attributes, has the best defense, can successfully run against heavy winds, and can destroy blocks to traverse paths. She wields a wooden mallet in this form. Its main weakness is that it deals the lowest damage per second out of all three forms except against enemies weak against this form. It has moderate SP gain from its charged attacks.
    • "Luminous", a swift Pierce-based style having Fragile Speedster and Glass Cannon tendencies and the ability to interact with otherwise invisible enemies and environment. It can really deal out the damage per second and allows Dana to move faster than her other forms, but cannot take hits well at all due to its poor defense against everything other than ice and fire damage which it has a great defense against, forcing players to parry or dodge incoming attacks. She wields a piercing weapon in each hand in this form. It is also the worst form for building up SP from charged attacks.

[up][up] Ok got it.

Found an example in Two Thousand Maniacs! where I think Bury Your Gays is misused and has unnecessary details.

Meanwhile, there's another work page called My Sassy Girl which has a possibly complaining description about the remake (It says "The American remake is considered to be extremely embarrassing") ." and a ymmv example which is ZCE.

  • Fanon Discontinuity: There is no American remake. There is no American remake. There is no American remake.
    • There is no Windstruck. There is no Windstruck. There is no Windstruck.

Is this correct? What to do with them if it's incorrect?

I found this recently added entry on Characters.Trails Series Rean Schwarzer (under My God, What Have I Done?), which I speculate to be misuse.

  • A case of 'What I was about to do' occurs in Reverie. Near the end of Act 4 at Mishelam, his assimilation with Ishmelga Rean results in him getting a glimpse of how his True Companions reacted to his attempted Heroic Sacrifice from the Normal Ending in Cold Steel IV. Seeing how hurt his loved ones were over his apparent passing acted as the catlayst for him to finally realize just how much anguish his Martyrdom Without A Cause tendencies have caused them, and served as the catalyst for him to reject Ishmelga Rean's offer to sacrifice himself as he realized his loved ones won't be happy if he can't live for himself.

Bumping [up][up][up] as well while I'm at it.

So, I found this on DesignatedVillain.Film

  • Real Steel: Max's Aunt Debra. While she's not a villain in any sense, or even really an antagonist, the few scenes she's in paint her as a haughty Rich Bitch who looks down on Charlie, and badgers the exasperated judge. The thing is, she has every right to think very little of Charlie and to not want him having an influence on his son, and her frustration in the court scene could easily be a reflection of knowing what a deadbeat he was at the time.

I have seen the movie and we are supposed to think she is right about Charlie, that is a big part of his arc, plus like the entry admits that she is not portrayed as a villain? Am I good to cut?

Troll: One of the traditions among the playerbase in Dark Souls is to abuse the message system to confuse, mislead and irritate other players: encouraging them to jump off into bottomless pits, giving incorrect tactical advice when fighting bosses, making bad puns, advising against doing things that are useful to progress and so on. Dark Souls II, which has a different system for illusory walls, is particularly prone to it; players seem to enjoy picking random very solid walls, then leaving a note saying "Illusory wall ahead" by them, carefully positioned so that even if it was a fake wall, the note would be preventing you from activating it.

Troping the playerbase instead of content with unintentional game design.

From One Piece: Kozuki Oden

  • Small Role, Big Impact: Despite being part of the Roger Pirates for just a year, Oden plays a vital role with his ability to read the Poneglyphs, especially the Rio Poneglyphs, and thanks to him, Roger is able to reach Laugh Tale and gain the title of Pirate King. Without Oden, the main plot of the series wouldn't exist.

I removed it because Oden isn't a "small role", but it was brought back because:

While Oden is one of Wano's central characters, he's not one of the main story's main character, despite being responsible for the main plot to happen.

Found another example on Characters.Trails Series Rean Schwarzer

  • Hero of Another Story: Normally this shouldn't be a trope of his considering he's the protagonist, but he plays this trope straight during the Divertissement Chapter of Cold Steel II where players control Lloyd and Rixia in which he's doing his heroics away from the Crossbell characters' point of view. From their point of view, Rean is a major threat.

This is just very word-crufty which makes me think that it might be misuse.

Bumping this and this as well.

@29634 Yes, that seems like a good case to cut.

@ 29635: Aye, that's unnecessary Real Life Troping and doesn't apply to the work itself

@ 29636: "Small role" =/= "not a main character". If the character plays a major role in the arc then it's not an example.

From Super Mario Bros. Wonder:

The context in this game is that Mario & co. can turn into an anthropomorphic elephant in this game. Humans can't turn into bipedal elephant-people to start with, so I'm a bit skeptical of this example trying to say that the unrealistic part is jumping. Does this trope apply, or is it good to delete?

Synchronicity (4 Score & 7 Years Ago)

Artistic License should really only apply when the work is trying for realism. I haven't played that specific game, but Mario is not one such franchise.

More importantly, Mario doesn't transform into a realistic elephant anyway, so this isn't applicable.

A while ago I wrote an Audience-Alienating Premise entry for Saints Row (2022) that was said didn't fit the criteria as it read more like the bugs turned people away rather than the plot. Since there's been several developments since that indicate it really was alienating, I tried to rewrite it again.

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: Although the game intended to revisit the series' roots following the Denser and Wackier direction taken by The Third and IV, it ended up being a tough sell. Longtime fans were put off by a continuity reboot that focused on a younger college-aged cast turning to crime to pay off student debt, while non-fans found the story and writing to be clichéd and underdeveloped. The game's divisive reception led to Volition being given to Gearbox Software before it shut down a year after the release.
