YMMV / Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?

Go To

  • Awesome Art: The background art appears to be hand-painted, just like on the original show.
  • Awesome Music: The opening theme, itself based on the Where Are You! theme.
  • Bizarro Episode: "A Run Cycle in Time" has a time-traveling merry-go-round, giant bananas, an unusually credulous Mystery Inc., giant robot versions of Scooby and Shaggy presiding over a Bad Future, and two very rare events for the series: the guest star is the monster, and the mystery was uncovering a lie with no actual crime having been committed. Even the title is an inside joke for animation fans.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: There are hints that made the culprit of each case too obvious:
    • "The Scooby of a Thousand Faces!" has the Minotaur being the Curator, having way more obvious hints with the Minotaur's athletic skills matching with the Curator's athletic history and that it knows most of the museum.
    • "The Fastest Fast Food Fiend!" makes Bill Tally the obvious suspect with his disagreements with his brother and that some hints pointed to someone with huge connections with the Tally family.
    • In "Now You Sia, Now You Don't!" the Sia Doppelgänger's identity as Sia's trainer is way obvious by her being the one who trains Sia and showing the same moves.
    • In "The Phantom, The Talking Dog, and the Hot Hot Hot Sauce" John Lapointe, is the obvious culprit with the first to last clue relating to his Hollywood career, as well as the way he acted.
    • "The Last Innate" Warden Snikeesen being a shady criminal who used his inmates as slaves with Lubeau as the actual hero of the backstory can come off as less of a surprise, considering the previous series doing a similar twist.
    • In "The Horrible Haunted Hospital of Dr. Phineas Phrag!" Big Bob McAllister, came off as the most suspicious suspect, he talks of his mother being in the hospital, is at almost at the same location as the monster when the gang grapple up and direct them to someone else.
    • Big Eddy Eats from "The Hot Dog Dog!" is an obvious culprit when it comes to being the eating champion who wants to keep his title and his time as the monster has him eat a lot of Hot Dogs like a pro.
    • "The Feast of Frakenfooder" Alton Brown being the monster can be easy to guess, when you notice, the painting looking like a re-paint, the cell phone having no reception, and Alton not having a fictional ancestry of being related to a mad scientist.
    • "A Fashion Nightmare!", the culprit is obviously Marla, when she talks about designing her own style, which turns out to be stealing work someone else who passed on.
    • The Medusa culprit from "Scooby-Doo, Dog Wonder" being Timothy Smallbottoms can come off as somewhat obvious with hints of his illegal nature in some areas.
    • "What a Night, for a Dark Knight!" is a case where, given how much the Joker would come to the minds of anyone who knows about Batman and his Rogues Gallery, they would be more curious to see if he wasn't the culprit (and/or which other villain it could have been instead).
    • "The Sword, The Fox, and the Scooby Sword" makes it pretty obvious that Coach Roach was the culprit, due to not only leaving a footprint that looks like it's from a shoe that a coach would wear, but also how the monster has similar movesets that Hamill would also have, almost as if he trained Hamill.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Some of the guest stars are pretty popular.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The plot of "What a Night, for a Dark Knight!" where the Joker kidnaps Alfred to access Bruce's bank accounts. The plot of The Joker War is kicked off by the Joker successfully stealing Bruce's money and assets from under him.
  • I Knew It!: The guest star appearances of other Hanna-Barbera properties such as The Funky Phantom as well as DC Comics characters and public domain characters was expected due to previous Scooby-Doo and Hanna-Barbera media doing the same in the past.
  • Just Here for Godzilla:
    • The Batman episode has garnered attention and praise for its The Comically Serious portrayal of the Caped Crusader.
    • The very premise of the show where different guest stars take turns teaming up with the Mystery Gang lends itself to this. Needless to say, depending on which celebrity, superhero, or classic Hanna-Barbera character you're a bigger fan of, there will simply be some guest stars you'll care for more than others, whether it's Mark Hamill, George Takei, Wonder Woman, Bill Nye, or Magilla Gorilla.
  • Moe: Darci Lynne Farmer and Petunia in "Too Many Dummies!" look absolutely adorable in the show's art style.
  • Narm Charm:
    • Many of the episodes can be looked upon as being ridiculous, particularly the interactions of the guest stars and the Mystery Gang. But that makes them all the more endearing and fun.
    • The sheer focus by the Mystery Gang on Mark Hamill having been Luke Skywalker is so on-the-nose it hurts, to the point that Mark himself points out how annoying it is that everyone focuses on it first and foremost. Then he gets in on the fun with Scooby and Shaggy towards the end, and it's just heartwarming nerdliness.
  • Signature Scene:
    • From the Batman episode, Fred repeatedly pressing a button in the Shakespeare bust to the Batcave while a door to a room behind him opens to Bruce changing into his Batman costume, thus swinging a Batarang at the button to close it.
    • Also from the Batman episode, Batman's hold music being dubstep.
  • So Okay, It's Average: Fans of Be Cool, Scooby-Doo loved the show's clever writing and emphasis on comedy. By comparison, the return to the old formula has some of them feeling like Guess Who? is nothing special.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The Hex Girls are redesigned to fit the old school aesthetic of the show, but these were poorly received for altering them beyond recognition. Thorn especially looks more like Pauley Perrette rather than being anywhere close to her original appearance.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Magilla Gorilla appears in one episode...and he's reduced to a (relatively) normal animal who doesn't even talk. Especially considering that his grunts are provided by Frank Welker, who would definitely be able to do Magilla's voice just fine if the character had been given actual dialogue. Apparently, the crew thought having another Talking Animal besides Scooby and his family must be too many. The fact that he's only got about two minutes of screen time in the episode doesn't help.
    • Simone only has one appearance in the second season before disappearing.
  • Unexpected Character: The entire series can be this since the appeal of who's joining in can attract a lot of viewers.
    • One of the characters Mystery Inc. teams up with is Steven "Steve" Quincy Urkel, whose series ended (roughly) 21-years before Guess Who airednote . And unlike some other shows from around that same time, Family Matters has (as of yet) had no sort of revival. However, Jaleel White (the actor who played Urkel in that series) has said that he'd love to do a revival for that series.
    • While crossing over with DC Comics superheroes is a staple in Scooby-Doo crossovers, that they would appear in their DCAU (or at least DCAU-esque or maybe even Justice League Action-esque) designs was unexpected.
    • Whoopi Goldberg with a gimmick similar to her famous role from Ghostnote  was the last thing people expected.
    • While an appearance by Jeff Dunham was surprising enough (especially since his shows tend to be geared more towards adults), an appearance from America's Got Talent-winner, Darci Lynne Farmer, was even more shocking.
    • Having Shaggy and Velma appear on Jeopardy! is one thing...but getting both Alex Trebek and Johnny Gilbert on board, too? This is even more shocking for Alex Trebek, as the episode ended up airing just less than a week after he died.
    • The episode "A Haunt of a Thousand Voices!" has Mystery Inc. meeting their voice actors.
  • Win Back the Crowd: Being a reboot that's also a throwback to classic cartoons from the 1960s and the 1970s, this show has attracted a lot of viewers.
