After a surprise accident leaves Mamoru needing a brief place to stay, Rei offers to let him stay at her temple for the time being. This musters jealousy in Usagi which leads to her embracing the ninja way to keep her Mamo-chan safe from the likes of her best friend.
Tropes in this episode include:
- Abhorrent Admirer: When Grandpa Hino and Yuuichirou try to hit on girls on the street, they're so repulsed by both that they run away from them.
- Accidental Pervert: Rei accidentally sees Mamoru naked when she walks into the bathroom not knowing he was getting ready to bathe.
- Acid Attack: To Moon and Chibi Moon's concern, the Lemures Mizugeika actually squirts acid instead of water.
- Aesop Amnesia: Apparently Usagi loses her faith in Mamoru and is aggressively jealous towards any girl that poses as a threat to their relationship.note
- Bowdlerize: The Cloverway dub cut Darien jumping into the bathtub after Raye accidentally walks in on him, as well as some shots of Grandpa Hino and Chad hitting on some women.
- Casanova Wannabe
- Tiger's Eye attempts to seduce Rei before attacking her, but she ignores him completely, much to his dismay.
- Grandpa Hino acts like he's a ladies' man, but all the women he hits on are repulsed by him.
- The Cavalry: Sailors Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter show up to save their friends from Mizugeiko.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: Usagi's incredibly possessive of Mamoru throughout the episode, even getting between him and Ami when they are only studying. When he has to stay over a Rei's place, she becomes paranoid that Rei will steal him that she starts stalking the Hikawa Shrine to keep an eye on the two and she goes ballistic upon learning that Rei accidentally saw Mamoru naked.
- Continuity Nod:
- Ami mentions how Rei and Mamoru used to date.
- In the Cloverway dub, Darien mentions that Chad used to be a rockstar, as mentioned in DIC’s version of his debut.
- Crying Wolf: Thanks to Usagi making too much ruckus with her ninja nonsense along with Diana insisting that he continue his work, Mamoru decides to ignore her cries while she and Chibi Moon are fighting the acid-spewing Mizugeiko.
- Damsel in Distress: Tiger's Eye effortlessly defeats and captures Rei without her even trying to fight back, and she ends up needing to be rescued by the other Sailor Guardians.
- Didn't Think This Through: Usagi tries to offer her place for Mamoru to stay but Chibi-usa argues how she'll get around getting her mom and dad to let him stay over.
- Dirty Old Man: Instead of teaching Yuuichirou to be a Celibate Hero, Grandpa Hino tries to have him get over Rei by taking him out to hit on other women.
- Disaster Dominoes: Courtesy of Diana crying out fire from downstairs, the girls run around like chickens and messing up Mamoru's apartment. It gets worse when Rei comes in and accidentally sprays a fire extinguisher everywhere.
- Disproportionate Retribution: Tiger's Eye is offended that Rei won't even pay him attention during their first meeting that he decides to go straight to assaulting her for her Dream Mirror.
- Dramatic Irony: Grandpa hints at Rei to date Mamoru while having no idea that their ship already sailed and sunk in the first season.
- Don't Call Me "Sir": Mamoru tries to get Diana to stop calling him "sir", but she insists on doing it.
- Flushing Toilet, Screaming Shower: No toilet is featured, but Yuuichirou uses the temple's furnace to overheat Mamoru's bathwater which gives him a painfully uncomfortable bath.
- Geisha: Tiger's Eye summons the Water Geisha Lemures, Mizugeika, to attack the Sailor Guardians.
- Green-Eyed Monster:
- Usagi spends the episode fretting over the possibility of Rei swooping Mamoru during his temporary living conditions, due to Rei being Mamoru's ex.
- Yuuichirou does not enjoy having Mamoru's company as he sees him as an actual threat that can take away his princess.
- Highly-Visible Ninja: Usagi dons a bright red ninja outfit while (badly) sneaking around at the Hikawa Shrine.
- Immediate Self-Contradiction: Grandpa Hino informs Yuuichirou that he must train harder to distance himself from the pleasures of his world. And to that, he takes him to the city to pester innocent women.
- Locked Out of the Loop: Zirconia knows more about Pegasus then the Amazon Trio but refuses to tell them anything more than what they already know.
- Luminescent Blush: After Rei accidentally walks in on Mamoru naked, she can't help but turn red in embarrassment, which lasts for white a while. She's still blushing when she comes back to her room, only to find Usagi snuck inside, and Usagi can deduce something happened just by how flustered Rei still is.
- Mass "Oh, Crap!": The Inner girls and Mamoru are exceptionally worried after they hear Diana cry "fire".
- Mind Rape: Tiger's Eye aggressively pulling out Rei's Dream Mirror from her chest as she's bound and searching through it is clearly very painful for her, as she's screaming in pain the entire time. The whole scene is an allusion to sexual assault, (as are most Dream Mirror scenes).
- Morton's Fork: There's just no winning with Usagi when it comes to her boyfriend. First she hates the idea that he gets to stay at Rei's place and is insistent on taking him with her. And when Rei allows her to drag him home, she's insulted at the notion that Mamoru isn't good enough for her.
- Naked Freak-Out: Mamoru naturally flips out after Rei enters the bathroom while he's wearing nothing but his birthday suit.
- Navel-Deep Neckline: Mizugeiko's outfit has a neckline that plunges all the way to her stomach, which is appropriate for a geisha Lemures.
- Not So Above It All: Rei calls Usagi childish after she acts like a Clingy Jealous Girl over Ami, but when Usagi starts insulting her in response, their argument quickly descends into a childish Tongue-Out Insult display.
- Parasol of Pain: Mizugeiko flies around using a giant umbrella and even uses it to summon a rainbow that launches ghost puppets at the heroes.
- Pose of Supplication: Yuuichirou does this to Rei as he feels ashamed for trying to hit on other women. Rei doesn't understand nor care about the context.
- Shadow Walker: Mizugeiko is summoned by walking out from Tiger's Eye shadow.
- Shipper on Deck: Grandpa Hino instantly approves of Mamoru as a worthy husband for Rei, even though both are no longer romantically interested in each other.
- Shoulders-Up Nudity: Mamoru is only seen from the waist up when he's naked in the bathroom.
- Shower of Awkward: Rei accidentally walks into the bath of her house not knowing Mamoru is already there and accidentally sees him naked. Usagi is especially mad about it once she finds out Rei saw her boyfriend naked.
- Skewed Priorities: Mamoru is persuaded to stay focused on his homework instead of helping in the fight by Diana.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Mizugeika has alot of similarities with Chagama given their shared theme of being traditional Japanese performers who dress in purple, are able to fly and use acidic attacks.
- Thunder Shock: When Yuuichirou learns Rei once dated Mamoru, we get a shot of his shocked expression alongside a bolt of lightning, with his usual Hidden Eyes even being visible for a moment.
- Tongue-Out Insult: At the start of the episode, Rei and Usagi get into a fight that devolves into both having their tongues out in a childish manner.
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Diana reacting to a fire two floors down causes a chain of Disaster Dominoes that wrecks Mamoru’s apartment, forcing him to stay with Rei.
- You Fool!: Rei calls Yuuichirou an idiot for not warning her that Mamoru was using the bathroom.
