Mamoru is visited by an old college friend named Saori who proves to be quite mature and overachieving, a contrast to Usagi. This inspires turmoil in Chibi-usa as she fears that the new girl may steal Mamoru from Usagi meaning that she will never be born!
Tropes in this episode include:
- Abnormal Plushies: Usagi visits a toy store and gushes over rather ugly looking stuffed animals.
- Actually Pretty Funny: Saori can't help but giggle at Usagi and Chibi-usa going at each other's throats without mercy.
- All Love Is Unrequited:
- Ever since high school, Saori always had romantic feelings for Mamoru but never acted on them.
- It's also implied that Kobayashi has feelings for Saori but pushes them aside so she can be happy with Mamoru.
- Bait-and-Switch: At first it looks like Usagi is horrified after listening to Chibi-usa's "The Reason You Suck" Speech along with the possibility of her boyfriend dumping her. But then she turns chipper as she's 100% confident that Mamoru will still love her.
- Beware the Silly Ones: Puko, a giant balloon monster, who came this close to smothering Usagi to death while sobbing how beautiful it was that she'd die saving the one she loves (and that she'd kill Mamoru immediately after).
- Balloon of Doom: The Balloon Lemures, Puko, starts out as a giant balloon who's main attack involves smothering people to their death.
- Comically Missing the Point: At the toy store, Chibi-usa seriously asks her mother if she ever stops to think how she wants to live her life or if she doesn't worry about anything. Usagi her she does worry about things. Like picking between two different stuffed animals.
- Disappointed in You: Played for Laughs: Kobayashi is disappointed that Mamoru defies gender norms by keeping his apartment in tip-top shape.
- Double Meaning: After Tiger's Eye reveals himself and restrains both Mamoru and Saori, the future superintendent general accuses him of committing assault. And by that she means physical (using knives to restrain Mamoru) and sexual (peeking inside her Dream Mirror without consent).
- Failed a Spot Check: Viz dub only. Usagi is so caught up on the ugly plushies that she doesn't realize that they're dog toys (in the original, Chibi-usa just says the plushies are ugly).
- Goal in Life: Saori's dream is to become Japan's first ever police woman superintendent general.
- Imagine Spot: Chibi-usa imagines Mamoru falling for Saori and deciding to break up with Usagi which will lead to her inevitable Ret-Gone.
- Ironic Echo: Earlier in the episode, Mamoru introduces Saori to his girlfriend "Usako". And after he does it again during the fight against Puko, Saori pieces together that Usagi is also Sailor Moon.
- Logical Weakness: As a balloon being, Puko has a fragile, plastic body that can be easily pierced. Mamoru uses one of Tiger's Eye's knives to stab her which gets her to let go of Sailor Moon.
- Oh, Crap!:
- Chibi-usa gets this reaction after seeing Mamoru out in public with Saori.
- Mamoru isn't too happy to see Puko decide to suffocate him while calling him "cute"
- Old Friend: Mamoru's college friends Saori and Kobayashi come to visit.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Chibi-usa's method of getting Usagi to shape up is to go on a tirade saying how mature, classy and "sexy" Saori is compared to her and how it's only a matter of time before Mamoru realizes this and dumps her. Usagi panics for a minute...and then cheerfully tells Chibi-usa that she has total faith in Mamoru as a boyfriend.
- Ret-Gone: Chibi-usa fears that Saori getting together with Mamoru means that she'll never be born.
- Secret Secret-Keeper: Saori figures out that Mamoru is dating the Sailor Moon but doesn't tell them that she knows.
- Sudden Soundtrack Stop: Happy background music plays while everyone is eating cake and Kobayashi comments on how Usagi has so much life left to enjoy. But it stops after Usagi mentions that her love life is settled with just Mamoru. It happens again after Chibi-usa questions what Saori's intentions are with Mamoru.
- Taking the Bullet: Sailor Moon throws herself into Puko's asphyxiating death hug to keep Mamoru safe.
- Together in Death: A teary-eyed Puko promises to kill Mamoru next so he can be in the next world alongside Sailor Moon.
