The Doctor, Ace and Hex land in Alaska. Well technically not in Alaska, but rather in a mysterious island that wasn't there four years, three months and six days ago.
But the existence of a citadel with mysterious slumbering creatures called Lurkers are more interesting to the Doctor, until he finds himself on the wrong end of a gun, as an Alaska expedition is ready to tamper with forces they don't understand, and it seems their fate is to unleash horrors upon the world.
Lurkers at the Sunlight's edge contains examples of:

- A God Am I: Whytecrag eventually jumps off the slippery slope and considers himself one.
- Bad Boss: Whytecrag doesn't give a single toss for any of his employees, including his Number Two, Slade.

- Black Speech: Several characters, and the Lurkers.
- Call-Back: The TARDIS is still white.

- Go Mad from the Revelation: Professor Corbin only catches a glimpse of the power inside the citadel, which instantly whipped up a storm and froze all of his men inside it, and became terrified.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Yes, by all means, confront the Lurkers with a broken key in order to appeal to their better nature Whytecrag.
- Human Popsicle: Several of a previous expedition's men are frozen in a gigantic pillar of ice.
- Human Sacrifice: Whytecrag plans to use the Doctor, Ace and Hex as such. In the end, he's left with Hex.
