Mario and The Wah-pocalypse is an SMG4 fanfiction written by CVGW James, retelling the events of The Waluigi Arc, the very first SMG4 arc.

Like the original, years of rejection, especially from Super Smash Bros., have caused Waluigi to snap, and he unleashes a terrible new power on the Mushroom Kingdom that, if not stopped, could destroy the world.

The first chapter was posted on July 28th, 2023, and the story is in-progress.

You can read the story on FanFiction.Net here, or on DeviantArt here.

Mario and The Wah-pocalypse contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Whereas SMG3 appeared near the end of the original Waluigi Arc, here he makes his debut in Chapter 17, which takes place during the events of "Waluigi's Time".
    • Axol, a character who wasn't introduced in the SMG4 universe until the Anime Arc, makes a cameo in Chapter 38.
  • Adaptational Karma: An interesting case in that the karma is given an explanation, instead of karma being added: Mario throwing Toad at the front door to (try to) stop the T-Pose Zombies comes after the latter tried to poison the former, which he doesn’t try to do in the original.
  • Adaptational Skill: We get to see more of what Waluigi's rejection powers can do, like spy on the SMG4 Gang when he himself is not with or near them, and seeing into the multiverse.
  • Adaptational Sympathy: Not by much, mind you, since Bob still left Mario and Luigi to die, but while he’s escaping the T-Pose Zombies in Chapter 4, he’s secretly regretful for not doing more to help them.
  • Adaptational Villainy: While Toad was known to dislike Mario in the SMG4 universe, Chapter 2, which adapts "Mario And The T-Pose Virus", opens with trying to get Mario to eat poisoned spaghetti, something he doesn’t try to do in the original.
  • Adaptation Deviation:
    • Right off the bat, the story begins with a change to the source material, as Waluigi leaves the T-Pose Mushroom for Shroomy to eat, instead of giving it to him personally like he did in "Mario And The T-Pose Virus". As a result of this, Shroomy admitting to his contribution to the problem at the episode’s conclusion goes unused in Chapter 6, meaning the SMG4 gang don’t know Waluigi’s behind the T-Pose virus yet. Waluigi would eventually explain this to Mario (and only Mario), but that's nine chapters later.
    • The second scam from "Mario The Scam Artist" that Mario and Wario do together ends slightly differently in Chapter 31... emphasis on "slightly" because it still fails.
  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • New additions include several scenes of Waluigi spying on the SMG4 Crew in their current escapades in scenes where he wasn't originally there. As shown in Chapter 34, not even Wario is safe from this.
    • Tari is given more dialogue with Bob before her Establishing Character Moment that was in "Mario The Ultimate Gamer".
    • After Tari beats Bob at Super Smash Each Other In The Face Bros., we get to hear more from the impressed crowds, with at least one Toad wanting to get Tari's autograph... and more complaining from Bob.
    • Chapter 11 shows how Mario and Luigi were kidnapped by Waluigi in time for the events of "Mario SAW".
    • "Waluigi's Time" is probably the arc episode with the most new additions to it by far.
      • Chapter 16 includes a scene with a Japanese receptionist that wasn't in the original.
      • Also added to Chapter 16 is the people at the assist trophy meeting talking about Waluigi as he is rejected from getting into Smash yet again.
      • Waluigi asks more people if there's anything unique about him than he did in the original. For that matter, there are more Smash fighters with unique moves that Waluigi envies, particularly an Inkling boy and girl.
      • After Waluigi gets rejected yet again, Chapter 23 provides what can be considered an extended ending to the episode, with him wanting to learn more about his powers. Interestingly enough, this extended ending brings back an unused concept from the arc's original planning stages by having Waluigi meet with Desti at a temple.
    • Chapter 24 gives readers a closer look at Luigi's time in the sewers after the events of "Mario SAW".
    • Chapter 26 shows Bob buying the carnival before properly being seen in it during "The Mario Carnival". For that matter, Chapter 35 provides scenes of SMG4, Tari, and Meggy getting interested in Bob's carnival before being properly seen there.
    • Chapter 28 clarifies how Wario aquires the pick-up truck he uses in "Mario The Scam Artist". To the surprise of no one, he didn't acquire it through legal means.
    • We get to see Waluigi turning more people into T-Pose Zombies, most notably making Francis the new Patient Zero in Chapter 29. We also get to see him kidnap more people to expand his army; people whose fates were left ambiguous in the original episodes, like with the Wheelchair Koopa from "Mario The Scam Artist" in Chapter 31.
    • Chapter 30 shows what Saiko has been up to prior to her Big Damn Heroes moment in "Mario and the Waluigi Apocalypse".
    • Deadpool makes more appearances in the story to better justify his cameo in "Mario The Scam Artist".
    • Wario's search for Waluigi is given more detail here than in the original.
  • Anachronic Order: The events of "Mario And The T-Pose Virus" are being covered in this retelling first, even though that’s technically not the first arc episode. Justified, as the author watched that episode when he was first getting into SMG4.
  • Boss Subtitles: When Master Hand fights Waluigi in Chapter 22, he's given the title "Omnipotent Host of Smash".
  • Bowdlerise:
    • "Mario And The T-Pose Virus" no longer opens with Mario humping spaghetti, due to the author’s tradition of wanting to keep things family-friendly in his SMG4 retellings.
    • Like with the author’s previous works, Bob says "my oval eggs" instead of "my ovaries"! Same goes for Skull Kid (actually Waluigi in disguise).
    • Super Smash Each Other In The Ass Bros. now has "ass" replaced with "face".
    • King Dedede's "Big Gay Dance" that was in "Waluigi's Time" has been reworked into Dedede feeling the urge to dance, likely because Luigi's Negative Zone filled him with that urge.
  • Call-Back:
  • Call-Forward:
  • Character Name and the Noun Phrase: Mario and the Wah-pocalypse. Not the "Waluigi Apocalypse", that's something else.
  • Compressed Adaptation:
    • For what the author claims to be pacing reasons, the events of "The Mario Café" are only briefly gone through in Chapter 7 as an event that happened offscreen.
    • While most of Tari training Mario is faithful to "Mario The Ultimate Gamer", the scene at the arcade is noticeably condensed, and told from the perspective of a spying Waluigi in a Villain Episode.
    • Only the aftermath of Waluigi bonding with Fishy Boopkins from "Stupid Mario Tennis Aces" is shown in Chapter 16.
    • The first scam from "Mario The Scam Artist", where Mario disguises himself as Miku to make Fishy Boopkins think Wario brought her to life, is briefly described as a past event in Chapter 31. The second and third scams fare better, but some dialogue is still missing from both.
  • Continuity Cavalcade: As expected, Wario flashes back to all the past scams he pulled with Waluigi in "Mario The Scam Artist". However, a few new moments from past episodes have been added as well, in addition to the moments being correctly arranged from earliest to latest at that moment.
  • Fanservice: One scene in Chapter 26 takes place at a beach with women getting massaged by Heavy Weapons Guy. And yes, they are wearing bikinis.
  • Fartillery: How does Wario punish Bob for stealing his sugar? Why, by farting on him, of course.
  • Foreshadowing: Thinking he’s going to die during the events of "Mario And The T-Pose Virus", Bob wonders if his friends truly matter. He would eventually learn in "Christmas 2018: The Most Important Thing" that the answer is yes.
  • Jerkass: Bob, as always. In Chapter 25, he takes advantage of the slight vacuum from Waluigi going rogue and Wario's scams losing traction... by passing off as a "wallet inspector" and stealing peoples' money. This behavior continues in Chapter 26.
  • Kick the Dog: In a new scene set during the events of "Waluigi's Time", Waluigi goes to SMG3 for reassurance regarding his rejection. His words are... not helpful, to say the least.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Saiko's soft spot for kittens that was hinted at in "Super Challenge 64" comes up in Chapter 30, where she saves a Cat Up a Tree, then looks after it until she finds its owner.
  • Knockout Gas: How Waluigi kidnaps Mario and Luigi before the events of "Mario SAW".
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: Keeping up with SMG4's tradition of giving Jeeves different jobs depending on the episode, he shows up in Chapter 26 as the carnival manager.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: After Wario catches Bob stealing his sugar in Chapter 19, he lets loose on him big time with probably one of the longest (and loudest) rants in the history of history:
Wario: YOU MAMAF***ING FILTHY, SCUMMY, DIRTY, INGRATE STUCK-UP OF A WALKING TRASH-BAG OF A GARO HOBO!!!! YOU SHADY, UGLY-FACED, SWINDLING SACK OF CLUSTERSHIT!!! • Sexy Discretion Shot: Axol is about to make out with one of his anime creations in Chapter 38 until the story cuts back to the carnival.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Meggy saying “it’s clobberin’ time” in Chapter 3 is a reference to the Thing.
    • Bob's Sore Loser spiel after getting beaten by Tari in Chapter 8 now contains a Shout-Out to Taken, as he claims to have a "particular set of skills" and threatens to track her down.
    • Waluigi mentions the X-Men in Chapter 23.
    • The first words in Chapter 24 is repeated uses of "falling" and "flailing", which was taken from the novelization of The Rise of Skywalker.
  • Sore Loser: Bob, as you would expect. After he's beaten by Tari at Super Smash Each Other In The Face Bros., he gives a more detailed rant here than he did in "Mario The Ultimate Gamer" as she leaves.
Bob: Hey, wait! Where are you going?! I was just going easy on you that time, I WANT A REMATCH AND I DEMAND IT NOW!!! GET BACK HERE OR I WILL CALL UP SAKURAI AND TELL HIM TO BAN YOU FOR HACKING! I HAVE HIS NUMBER AND I HAVE YOUR NUMBER, I’LL HAVE YOU KNOW THAT I HAVE A PARTICULAR SET OF SKILLS AND I WILL NOT HESITATE TO TRACK YOU DOWN!
  • Stalker without a Crush: There are multiple points in the story where Waluigi is spying on the SMG4 Gang during their usual escapades when no one else is looking at him, something he doesn't do in the original.
  • Villain Episode: Chapter 9 prominently feature Waluigi spying on the SMG4 gang doing their usual activities, including Tari training Mario during the events of "Mario The Ultimate Gamer". This was inspired by a Freeze-Frame Bonus of his shadow lurking at one point in the actual episode.
  • Waxing Lyrical: As Bob hangs onto the castle’s edge during the events of "Mario And The T-Pose Virus", he says (in his thoughts) "I can’t hold on much longer, but I’ll never let go". This is a reference to the Crush 40 song "Open Your Heart" from Sonic Adventure.
  • What Would X Do?: When faced with Bob's rigged carnival game in Chapter 37, Meggy wonders what her idol Oneshot Wren would do at a time like this.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: As "Waluigi's Time" was not covered first in this arc retelling, the events are told through the use of flashbacks. Though, in this case, it's more like "whole set of chapters flashback"; Chapters 16 to 23, to be specific.
  • You Watch Too Much X: SMG4's "I have been expecting you" line from "Mario The Ultimate Gamer" here has Mario wonder how much Star Wars SMG4 has watched.
