I have become a test tube baby. Quite an accomplishment for a teenager and all it took was...

Going Native is a Dragon Ball/The DCU crossover. A human finds himself reincarnated as the second prince of the Saiyans, in a universe that blends the two universes together. He finds that he needs to truly become a Saiyan in order to survive this new life he finds himself in. The story is complete as of Jun 14, 2021.

The story can also be found here, here, and here.

A sequel titled Gone Native: Earth Saga started on Jul 5, 2021 and is currently ongoing. That story can also be found here, here, and here.

Going Native and its sequel provide examples of the following tropes:

  • The Ace: Tarble began to be recognized as the face of the Saiyan race by the Trade Organization through his exploits and continuous successes in the War, leading him to become a public figure, with merchandise and TV Shows with his name albeit to Tarble's chagrin and disinterest. Subverted, at the end as this left an undesirable outcome. See Broken Ace.
  • All for Nothing: Tarble learns that the entire war and all the lives it cost was just so that Frieza could produce and sell products. Even worse, it's implied that Frieza would just start a new war after he gets what he wants so that he can get even more.
  • Big Eater: Saiyans have always been this in canon, though it's usually more of a Running Gag. Here the fact that Saiyans eat way more than the average person is actually taken more seriously as it makes them more susceptible to sieges.
  • Black-and-White Morality: The heroes of Earth have this view. This makes things complicated when they are presented by the reality of the rest of the universe.
  • Blood Knight: Saiyans, with few exceptions, relish an opportunity to fight, especially if it's against a strong opponent. The Khunds are also this, which led to both races being a sort of Friendly Enemy.
  • Broken Ace: With Tarble unintentionally overshadowing Vegeta with his success, and King Vegeta's decision to Tarble to take the throne, the festering jealousy and resentment on Vegeta's pride boiled over into seeing no other choice but to kill his brother. If that wasn't enough, Frieza makes an appearance, revealing the war's futility, and kills King Vegeta on front of the brothers, pushing Vegeta over the edge; it was short-lived, as Bardock's squad assasinates him while fighting Frieza, with Tarble's turn to become a Super Saiyan, killing his squad in blind grief and rage. The outcome of said battle led to Planet Vegeta's destruction, Frieza's death, and Vegeta and Bardock's death and sacrifice, respectively. Leaving Tarble in complete tatters.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Tarble can't even recognize the Red Lantern who challenges him to a fight, even though he invaded Planet Vegeta once and Vegeta himself subsequently genocided his entire species.
  • Calling Your Attack: Tarble occasionally shouts the name of his attack. When Cooler queries him about it once, the confused Tarble claims it improves his attack.
  • The Cameo: Tarble briefly speaks with Death the Endless during a near death experience.
  • Cannibalism Superpower: Child claims that ancient Saiyans feasted upon gods for their divinity. Tarble proves her claims when he takes a bite out of Ares.
  • The Chessmaster: Vril Dox II is revealed to have manipulated the Reach, the Trade Organization, and the Lanterns in order to achieve what he believes will lead to a lasting peace in the future.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: These get handed out a lot.
    • It first happens with Tarble's "training" with the Saibamen.
  • Enemy Mine: Invoked by Tarble in order to get Koriand'r and Komand'r to finally work through their differences.
  • Evil Versus Evil: The Trade Organization kills off entire species so that they can then sell the depopulated planets for a profit, or otherwise enslave species into their every growing army whenever they feel that they need more disposable pawns. The Reach brainwash entire species and use them as part of their experiments all the while posing as peaceful merchants to those who don't know their real agenda. These two massive forces are then put in a war due to Frieza's desires, causing the rest of the universe who aren't caught in the middle to stand back and watch the fireworks.
  • Fusion Fic: The fic merges the Dragon Ball and DC universe settings, so that the Trade Organization is coexisting with The Reach and Thanagarian Empire in the same galaxy for example. Not a difficult thing to do as neither verse is lacking in Blood Knight race of aliens or Galactic Conquest enthusiasts.
  • Harem Genre: Averted. Word of God is that there will be no harem due to Tarble's disinterest in romance. If he would even pursue one, it will only be for one person.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: After it seems like he's been captured by the combined forces of Earth's superheroes and supervillains, Tarble reveals that he's been holding back by combining Wrath State and Super Saiyan.
"I underestimated you all. As warriors, I shamed you. I considered Superman the greatest threat, so I focused on preparing myself to face him when the time came. I wanted to avoid fighting wastefully to stretch out my endurance. For that, I am sorry. I should have held nothing back on all of you from the start."
  • I Did What I Had to Do:
    • Tarble holds to this. Deconstructed when it turns out to be All for Nothing thanks to the actions of Frieza and Bardock. Tarble is left devastated and with no idea of what to do now. It takes a pep talk from Yamoshi, the Saiyan God himself, for him to get back up and move forward.
    • The Guardians believe that what they did in regards to the Reach-Trade Organization War to be the correct decision.
  • Ignorant of Their Own Ignorance: Some people honestly think that humanity, with superheroes leading the way, can take on Tarble and his forces.
  • It Amused Me: Basically the entire reason why Frieza does anything, with the author outright comparing him with a fat, lazy cat. He showers Tarble with favors because he finds Tarble interesting, allows King Vegeta to plan rebellion against the Trade Organization and Bardock's own rebellion against King Vegeta because he thinks it's funny and keep stoking Vegeta's jealousy and resentment to Tarble while continuously giving them more power and influence within the Trade Organization just for the purpose of making their clash grander.
  • Knee-capping: Tarble does this to both Barry Allen and Wally West; the former by cutting off his legs at the knees and the latter by crushing his kneecaps.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: After Tarble makes his way to humanity's safe haven, Luthor, as the President of the New United Nations, offers humanity's surrender.
  • Mirror Character: Tarble explains to the Teen Titans (plus Supergirl) that Koriand'r's relationship with her sister Komand'r has very strong parallels to his own relationship with his late brother Vegeta.
"Towards the end, Vegeta hated me as much as he loved me," I admitted to her. To the Titans. I looked to Koriand'r to see that she didn't appear too surprised. She gave me a sorrowful look with empathy shining in her eyes.
"Elery didn't have a great reaction to seeing Komand'r and Kori fighting," Kara admitted to me, looking distinctly troubled. I guess I wasn't the only one that saw the parallels. "She didn't say much about it, but we learned about the fight between you and your brother."
Then there was no point in keeping it a secret. "My brother intended to murder me," I explained, and the Titans shifted uncomfortably and the truth. "During the war, my exploits outshone his and I became a threat to his power for when he became king… he snapped when our father made me the heir. I tried to reason with him in any way I could. I was willing to vanish after the war, but he wouldn't accept anything other than me killing me with his own hands to ensure I could never usurp the crown from him."
  • Number Two: Ada'la becomes this to Tarble after he starts his own empire.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Control Freak reacts this way when the Teen Titans tell him that Tarble is real and on Earth, which is why they need whatever info he has on the Saiyan.
"I thought that stuff was all made up. You know, alien dramatization and whatever. But if Prince Tarble is real… then I don't want him on Earth. I don't want him anywhere near Earth. And by the end of this, you won't want him here either."
    • Lex Luthor gives a subdued version of this after Tarble shows up where all the humans have been hiding alongside an injured Superman.
  • One-Man Army: Once Tarble gets to Earth, he demonstrates how powerful he is by holding his own against the Justice League and Earth's supervillains.
  • Power at a Price: In order to use the Wrath State, the user needs to endure excruciating pain. The more powerful you get with it, the more pain you feel.
  • Power Levels: The Trade Organization provides scouters which can determine this, but it isn't the be all, end all.
    • Although it can determine your total power level, it doesn't say what it is you can actually do with that power. Someone with a higher power level may lose due to lacking any special abilities.
    • This doesn't take into account weapons, armor, or other objects. As such, although Lanterns have low power levels, their power rings allow them to be some of the most powerful fighters in the universe.
  • Psychic Strangle: Frieza demonstrates an impressive version of this by killing Mogo.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Teach has a short one for the Amazons after Queen Hippolyta demands that Tarble leave Themyscira.
Teach: Meh, s'not like there was anything worth ruling here anyway. All I see are a bunch of scared women hiding behind divine protection because they're too scared of the wider world.
Hippolyta: (snarling) You do not know our history. The horrors we endured at the hands of men.
Teach: I don't. Don't really care to, either. I'm just calling it how I see it — an island full of cowards whining that something bad happened to 'em, what, thousands of years ago? Sheesh. How pathetic can you be?
  • Sapient Eat Sapient: Saiyans can and will eat the corpse of a sapient being if given the opportunity or need. They don't even care if it's the body of an enemy or an ally. The only sapient beings they don't eat are other Saiyans.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!:
    • Green Lantern Kaylark intervenes in the Reach-Trade Organization War when it reaches her homeworld.
    • Hal Jordan and several other Green Lanterns feel this way as well and try to intervene in the war. This results in them being put on probation.
  • Shaming the Mob: After Tarble made his declaration of Earth annexed to his empire some of Earth's people start to blame the Justice League as their fault for not stopping him. Tarble is quick to come to the League's defense by publicly shaming them for ungratefully turning their backs on the Justice League, who had selflessly saved and protected them.
  • So What Do We Do Now?: Tarble feels this way after the end of the war and the deaths of his father, Vegeta, his team, and Frieza, as well as the destruction of Planet Vegeta. After getting a pep talk from Yamoshi, the Saiyan God, he decides that he now has the freedom to make his own decisions and decides to lead his people as their new king.
  • Stable Time Loop: One happens as a result of Tarble meeting Yamoshi, the Saiyan God.
  • Undying Loyalty: Broly has this towards Tarble. As such, when Tarble starts fighting Earth's heroes and villains, despite Broly liking living on Earth for a few years, Broly decides he's with Tarble and fights by his side.
  • War for Fun and Profit: This is Frieza's motivation for starting a war with the Reach.
The Trade Organization would seize their machine worlds, their centers of production, and use them. Only tanks and guns wouldn't be the only thing that they used them for. The Trade Organization would use their worlds to become the single greatest producer for all kinds of merchandise! Ships, tvs, toys, weapons, kitchen appliances! If it could be sold, then the Trade Organization would create it with a great big logo slapped on it.
They would completely undercut the competition with their low prices, driving them out of business, before jacking their prices as high as they felt like. Frieza would see to it that the Trade Organization became not only the greatest company in the galaxy but the only major company in the galaxy.
And when he became the economy in this galaxy, when every spec of wealth was his, even if it was in the pocket of another, he would set his sights to the galaxies beyond...
Ahh... was a lovely dream that it was... but that day was some time away.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: The Justice League was expecting a completely evil alien conqueror leading an invasion that that would need to be fought off. Instead, they got Tarble.
  • Zero-Approval Gambit: Koter's grand plan for The Reach Empire. Recognizing the stagnantion in the Reach, he seizes absolute power of a dictator for himself in order to break the power of the old families in the empire all the while planning his own downfall. As Vril noted, history will remember him poorly even though he succeeded in accomplishing everything he set out to.
