Open Road Films is a distribution label that was created in 2011 as a joint venture between theatre companies AMC Theatres and Regal Cinemas as a way to fill some of their many screens (though they do also distribute to other chains). Distributing mostly genre fare, nearly all of their titles are pickups/acquisitions that are made independently or were dropped by other studios but unlike most studios, do not produce projects in-house. The company also has deals with Universal (DVD/Blu Ray/on demand) and Showtime (pay cable). The studio was sold to Tang Media Partners in 2017, although it retained a marketing partnership with its original owners.
In October 2017, the studio was quietly merged with IM Global and renamed to Global Road Entertainment, which later declared bankruptcy after a slate of bombs (Midnight Sun, Show Dogs, Hotel Artemis and A-X-L). After being purchased by Raven Capital Management, the Open Road brand was revived and began releasing new films in late 2020.
