The Fryberg Family

    Daughter

Default Name: Rose

Voiced by: Mai Nakahara (Japanese)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_rose_baby.png
Spring Year
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_rose_kid.png
Summer Year
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_rose_adult_1.png
Winter Year
Age: 5-18
Height: 50 cm at age 5 then varies (max: 180 cm)
Birthday: Chosen by player (Default: 4/21)
Weapon: Bow and Sword

The only daughter of Wood and Luca. The game starts 5 years after her mother's passing. She starts out being dependent on her father but starts relying on him less at age twelve. She can choose to hone her skills as a warrior, a scholar, a socialite, or even a blend of the three. The end goal is for her to develop the skills needed for her to be fully independent once she becomes an adult.
  • Age-Gap Romance: Most of her love interests are much older than her, with Nina and Craig being the only ones who have a year or less age gap with Rose.
  • Daddy's Girl: A Rose who views Wood favorably and has high affection for him plays this straight.
  • Dude Magnet: Besides her available romance options, Rose can gain male admirers who send her love letters but never actually pursue their feelings for her.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Rose's blonde hair is noted many times throughout the game and she plays it straightest with low Darkness. Even with high Darkness, her Hangout events still have her being kind and understanding.
  • Likes Older Women: A rare same sex example. Except Nina, all of Rose's female love interests are older than her by at least 6 years, with the oldest being Mary who's in her 30's. It's implied this is due to Rose lacking a mother figure in her life, as her relationships with Connie and Mary have Rose seeing them as surrogate mother figures, but she can also pursue romantic relationships with them once she's an adult.
  • Second Love: She can serve as this for Rebecca and Derrick, the former who's first love went missing in the forest and never returned, and the latter rushed into a relationship and marriage with a girl when he was young that ended poorly.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: The true ending reveals that 5 year old Rose at the beginning of the game and 12 year old Rose after the time skip are not the same person; they are effectively twin sisters. The real Rose, aka Angel was kidnapped by Asbel who then transferred his consciousness into her body to extend his lifespan and use Angel's demigod powers for his own power hungry goals, growing up into Lebsa. Luca created Rose 4 years after Asbel stole Angel's body to both to stop Asbel and save Angel. She made Rose a clone of Angel with Angel's skills but without any of Luca's goddess powers to keep Lebsa from recognizing Rose.

    Father

Default Name: Wood

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_wood.png
Rose's father. He's a former knight and after his wife's untimely passing has to raise his daughter on his own. During Rose's childhood, he plays a big part in shaping her personality, but becomes less of an influential force as she gets older. How Rose feels about him is separated into favorability and affection, the former being how cool he appears to his daughter and the latter being how much she loves him. Favorability is earned or lost when Rose has concerns and whether he responds to them in the way that fits the kind of person he wants Rose to see him as while affection is gained through talking, giving pocket money, and spending time off together for free time. He's also the one who schedules her classes and free time.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: His hair is framed in a way that it hides his eyes. They can be partially seen in the flashback that plays after kid Rose falls off the cliff. Subverted in the true ending where his eyes are fully shown.
  • Forced Transformation: Downplayed. Wood starts growing blue feathers on his arms due to the Great Degeneration phenomenon, and he suspects this is due to someone's will. While the feathers don't spread any further throughout the game, the non-true endings imply Wood may become a full bird in the future.

    Mother

Luca

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/luca_5.png

Rose's mother and Wood's wife who passed away five years prior to the start of the game.
  • Rescue Romance: Raising Rose's affection high enough will have Wood reveal that he met and fell in love with Luca after she saved him from a rampaging bear.

    Lee
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_lee_0.png
A little talking white bird who serves as helper/tutorial giver. When the game begins and once Rose becomes a young teenager, he will prompt the player to choose what style of father they want to be which determines how favorability will need to be raised. Also during the latter time period, he will prompt the father to speak to Rose when she has concerns.
  • Mr. Exposition: Lee's main function seems to be to explain certain events in-game.
  • Talking Animal: One of the very few animals to be capable to do so.

Forgotten Forest Party Members

    Nina

Nina Handel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/body_nina.png
Age: 13-17
Height: 148-163 cm
Birthday: 3/1
Weapon: Bow and Arrow

The fourth daughter to the Handel family and a theology major at school. She spends most of her time studying with the archbishop at the altar and occasionally works as a priestess. Nina is not as popular as her brothers and sisters and hates the deceptive atmosphere back home. To Mona, she's quite outgoing however and relies on Mona a lot. Nina's father passed away when she was still young. Although her mother can be strict with her, Nina still respects her.
Paraphrased from Nina's in-game bio

  • Bearer of Bad News: She gets a vision of the Final Boss battle Rose has to win in order to get the true ending and warns her a month in advance.
  • First Friend: After Rose goes in the forest for the first time and laments her Friendless Background, Nina, impressed with Rose's bravery, approaches her and asks to be Rose's friend.
  • Fortune Teller: It starts out as a hobby but she begins using it more to help people as she gets older. She does possess a Crystal Ball, but utilizes other forms of divination as well such as one involving fish soup in her second relationship event.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Her being a Handel makes her very wealthy, but she has an emotionally distant relationship with all of her family. The only people she's really close to are Mona and Rose.

    Mona

Mona Albretch

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/body_mona.png
Age: 18-24
Height: 171 cm
Birthday: 8/1
Weapon: Sword

"The owner of a family restaurant, who loves cooking and socializing and has a keen heart to succeed. She has known Nina since she was a kid and saw her as a little sister. likes to stay close yet distant with everyone. She seems to have a complicated history with the Hands. Mona's mother passed away a long time ago. She has witnessed Nina growing up but seems to have a love-hate relationship seeing Nina living a carefree life. She doesn't want Nina to find out about her dark side, so she wants to protect Nina's innocence."
From Mona's in-game bio

  • Chef of Iron: She's an amazing cook and fully capable of defending herself in the Forgotten Forest.
  • Heroic Bastard: While it's not outright stated, putting together all the clues indicates that Mona is Grandfather Handel's illegitimate daughter with Lilia, the waitress active during Rose's childhood.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother passed some time between the time skip. Considering Lilia is gone by the time Rose turns 12...

    Benson

Benson Muller

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/body_benson.png
Age: 18-23
Height: 174-175 cm
Birthday: 7/1
Weapon: Bow and Arrow

A royal painter of the Volcano Kingdom. His outstanding skills earned him an apprenticeship with a former royal painter at a young age. He was orphaned due to the Heathrott War and the suffering he witnessed during his time as a refugee lead to him despising war. Thus, he prays for the current peace to continue. He makes a living through selling paintings he makes in his spare time, but is tired of the commercialization of art and wishes to save enough money to travel and paint whatever he desires.
Paraphrased from Benson's in-game bio

  • Exposed to the Elements: Inverted. He's always wearing his black coat even in summer, something Rose can lampshade but understands that Benson isn't comfortable with showing off skin.
  • Sensitive Artist: He has a kind heart and an appreciation of beauty and the arts.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: He's the sensitive guy to Hackett's manly man, due to Benson being a painter who's polite and gets easily flustered by Rose. However, Benson is revealed to not be as delicate as he looks.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: He's a rare male example. Despite Benson's sensitivity, that doesn't make him a pushover as seen with his third relationship event where he publicly exposes a gang of art forgers who scammed Benson's adoptive mom.

    Hackett

Hackett Munster

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/body_hackett.png
Age: 19-25
Height: 188-190 cm
Birthday: 12/1
Weapon: Sword

A flirtatious young soldier who was orphaned in the war that happened prior to the start of the game. He grew up by the lakeside of Wild Horse Lake, and alongside his combat abilities is a talented farmer known for bountiful harvests. He's also Benson's adoptive brother and has vitriolic friendship with Ze. The forest is a second home to him and such hates poachers.
Paraphrased from Hackett's in-game bio

  • Chivalrous Pervert: He makes no secret about how much he loves the ladies, but doesn't try to make moves other than flirting towards Rose and is compassionate to animals.
  • Cleavage Window: His shirt is opened up in a way that exposes his chest.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He keeps it tied up, but it goes past his waist.
  • Little Bit Beastly: His shared romance ending with Ze showed he gains enough control of his wolf form to manifest just his ears and tail.
  • Oral Fixation: Almost always seen with a blade of grass in his mouth.

    Lon

Lon Hill

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lon.png

  • Arranged Friendship: The Wheel and Hill families arranged for him and Craig to be friends due to Craig being the closest to Lon's age out of the Wheel family's four children, though Lon's still older than Craig by 4 years. Despite their friendship being forged by their families, the age difference between them, and their differing personalities, their friendship turned genuine and in the present Lon considers considers Craig his best friend and is supportive, if a bit teasing and strict, to him.
  • Only Sane Man: While most of Rose's companions come from broken families, are orphans, or suffer from mental issues, Lon stands out due to coming from a loving and supportive family, both his parents are still alive, and most of his struggles simply come from him being rejected by the writing world due to them prioritizing on seniority over talent. Lon is quite aware that he's much more well adjusted compared to Rose's other friends and often uses his sane man status as a pillar of support for others, Craig especially.

Three Lords

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/three_lords.png
from left to right: Gwyneth, Claude, and Lebsa
Once Rose turns 12, she'll have to choose which lord to pledge her allegiance to. Lord Lebsa of the Handel family is focused on combat, Princess Gwyneth of the royal family focuses on the arts and socializing, and Principal Bryan focuses on research. Rose will then be assigned task from her chosen Lord and completing them gives her money and Knight favorability.
    In General
  • Beauty, Brains, and Brawn: A rare Two Girls and a Guy version. Gwyneth is beauty, Claude is the brains, and Lebsa is brawn.
  • Mutually Exclusive Party Members: Once a Lord is chosen at the scripted Knight Path part of the game, they are the ones Rose does tasks and develops a relationship with and the others are locked out. The non-chosen Lords still appear in the story and Rose can raise relationship with them at certain story parts, but it's basically pointless since she cannot get relationship events or endings with the non-chosen Lords.
    Lebsa (Spoiler Warning)

Lord Lebsa Lorace

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lebsa.png
Age: 22-28
Height: 170 cm
Birthday: ??? Default: 4/21
Lebsa was adopted by the Hands when she became an adult and became the Lord with her excellent battle ability and reputation. Her battle ability is truly astounding; according to her, she is the disciple of Hero Asbel. her looks and status allowed her to be popular among teenagers. But underneath all that, she has occasional outbursts of emotional instability and seems like she has an unknown past...
  • Char Clone: She's a blend of all 3 types. Lebsa is asscoiated with red, has a Cool Mask that covers her eyes, blonde tipped hair that was once fully blonde, is an Anti-Hero in comparison to Claude and Gwyneth, acts as a mentor to Rose if her Knight Path is chosen, is revealed to be the Big Bad and betrays Rose regardless if Rose is a stranger or her girlfriend in the true ending, and is revealed to be a Long-Lost Relative due to Lebsa being the body of Rose's missing sister/the base Rose was cloned from

    Gwyneth

Princess Gwyneth Claremont

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gwyneth.png
Age: 18-22
Height: 167 cm
Birthday: 4/1
The Princess of Volcano Kingdom, but she hates to be addressed as the princess. She is working hard to become the heir and proactively participate in politics and military affairs. She sits high and doesn't believe in anyone around her besides her brother. Gwyneth doesn't expect her brother to return to normal but hopes at least he will live a safe life. Rarely had time for fun; she was always devoured by study and said there were too many missions waiting for her to accomplish. She hopes she can find a way to lead the Kingdom into a better future through history and hopes Rose can be part of her journey.
  • Cleavage Window: Has this due to her dress having a low neck line and her cloak covering her neck and shoulders.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Fitting for the royal princess and her Knight Path being focused on elegance, the arts, and balls.
  • Half-Identical Twins: Her and her younger twin Kenneth have the same shade of platinum blonde hair and purple eyes.
  • Lady and Knight: Her third relationship event has Rose swearing to be Gwyneth's knight. Whether or not it becomes a Bodyguard Crush or Courtly Love is up to the player.
  • Politically-Active Princess: Due to her father's advanced age and Kenneth being mentally handicapped, Gwyneth works very hard to keep up with Volcano Country's politics due to the pressure on her as the heir to the throne.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She's very icy towards those who aren't Kenneth and Mona. Her relationship events eventually add Rose as someone Gwyneth can show her sweet side to.
  • Uptown Girl: Can marry Rose, who can end the game as a commoner and has a shared romance ending with Mona who's an illegitimate, disinherited Handel.

Age: 33-39
Height: 183 cm
Birthday: 10/1
The Principal of St. Elmo's and the youngest principal in history. One of the three Lords of Volcano Kingdom, but had personally expressed greater research interest. Bryan wasn't the brightest as a child but demonstrated amazing ability when he entered the research institute and published many vital papers on magical creatures with his team. He is always kind to his students, and no one has ever seen him angry.
  • Age-Gap Romance: The oldest of Rose's romance options, with the him being 21 years older than Rose and he's in his 40s while she's in her 20s if they get married.
  • Nice Guy: In contrast to Lebsa and Gwyneth who take time to show a nicer side to Rose, Claude is kind to Rose from the very start and extends this kindness to his other students. He's also a case of Beware the Nice Ones, although Claude's angry side isn't seen at any point of the game.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: Principal/Student romance to be exact, although nothing explicitly romantic happens between Rose and Claude until the former graduates from St. Elmo's.
  • The Workaholic: Claude juggles his work as principal and researcher leaving little relaxation time and his second relationship event has him having to rest due to stress caused by seeing some of his research papers being damaged. If he becomes Rose's husband, he continues his late night research habits to Rose's chagrin.
  • Young and in Charge: While a principal in his 30s isn't out of place in the modern world, the medieval inspired Volcano Princess world has Claude face a lot of scrutiny from his seniors due to him being the youngest Principal of St. Elmo's due to a Succession Crisis when the previous Principal died suddenly.
