Spin-offs

Protagonists:

    Player Character
The protagonist, a suburbanite whose house is constantly besieged by zombies. They later join Crazy Dave on a time-traveling adventure.
  • Big "NO!": A loud "Nooo!" can be heard from inside the house if the zombies managed to breach your defences.
  • Crazy Survivalist: Except they use mutant plants instead of firearms as weapons.
  • Featureless Protagonist: They don't appear in person, and are supposed to be the player themselves.
  • Heroic Mime: As mentioned in Featureless Protagonist, the player character doesn't even appear in person, let alone have any lines. The only time they "speak" is when the zombies eat them. See Big "NO!".
  • Scream Discretion Shot: In a game over scenario, the zombies break into the house to eat the player character's brains. However, this is not a horror game, so you only hear the zombies munching while the player character screams a Big "NO!".

Crazetopher "Crazy Dave" David Blazing III

"Greetings, Neighbor! The name's Crazy Dave. But you can just call me Crazy Dave."
The deuteragonist. The player's neighbor, an insane but friendly man who helps them by offering advice and selling them some items. He later creates a time machine named Penny.
  • Berserk Button: He really hates Bungee Zombies. An entire level centered around Bungees is enough to make his blood boil. Considering how Bungees are very dangerous zombies that can steal strong plants, bring in stronger zombies, and are near impossible to stop without either an Umbrella Leaf or an insta-kill, could anyone really blame the poor guy?
  • Big Good: He's the main guy who helps you. In Garden Warfare, it shows.
  • Character Catchphrase: BECAUSE I'M CRAAAAAAAZY!!
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Isn't called Crazy Dave for nothing.
  • Character Tic: Whenever he shouts (usually his catchphrase), expect his Tinfoil Hat to flip off his head.
  • Crazy Survivalist: Except he's a nice guy, and uses mutant plants instead of firearms as weapons.
  • Distressed Dude: Before the Final Boss begin, Dave ends up snatched away by a Bungee Zombie before he tells the player about the Zombot's weakness. He turns out to be okay after the battle, however.
  • Ditzy Genius:
    • He comes up with very effective (yet bizarre) methods of fighting against the zombies, and is able to build a time machine, but as he quickly explains, he is crazy.
    • He's also surprisingly well-informed about palaeobiology, in Jurassic Marsh - he thinks the most iconic organisms of the Jurassic period were the gymnosperms (before thinking of "dino-sours" - he's a gardener, after all), and makes a reference to theropod evolutionary history while escaping from an incoming meteor.
Crazy Dave: "Bye-bye, dinos! You'll be birdies in no time."
  • Evil Twin: In the Chinese version of the second game, he has an evil gangster brother simply named Evil Dave.
  • Flanderization: In the original, he was a little eccentric and a bit crazy, but still fairly intelligent and knowledgeable about the plants and zombies. In It's About Time, while it's still the case, the introduction of Penny makes him much dumber, often relying on Penny to interpret his ramblings.
  • Given Name Reveal: In Plants vs. Zombies 2, Zomboss refers him as David. And according to the comic, his last name is Blazing. His full name eventually revealed to be Crazetopher David Blazing the 3rd in Plants vs. Zombies 3.
  • His Name Really Is "Barkeep": You'd think Crazy Dave is just a nickname he caught from being a bit on the loony side, and that Dave is his first name, but Plants vs. Zombies 3 reveals that it's just a shortening of his first two names, Crazetopher and David.
  • Large Ham: His dialogue certainly shows he really chews the scenery.
  • Loon with a Heart of Gold: He's very eccentric, but he's still the Big Good of the series who always helps out the player against the zombies.
  • Mad Scientist: Despite his insanity, and besides his (informal) expertise on the plants and zombies, he was able to turn his car into a time machine.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: If Zomboss' words were sincere (and that's a huge if), Dave's quest to re-eat his taco in the second game caused huge problems in the timeline. However, he claims to be "too taco-addled to care".
  • Skewed Priorities: In the final battle of Modern Day, Dave is fixated on his taco and nothing but, to the point he mostly exclaims "TACO!!"
  • Speaking Simlish: Crazy Dave is apparently speaking English (via his text bubbles), though his voice sounds like random gibberish. With that said, the comics and the third game suggests that he's The Unintelligible, with only few people like his niece, Patrice could understand him.
  • Tinfoil Hat: He wears a saucepan as a helmet, probably to shield his brains from zombies.
  • Token Human: Pretty much him and probably the Player are the only (living) human characters in the games, though some games, such as Adventures, and the comics introduce more human characters.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He seems to have an obsession for tacos, to the point of willing to pay you the absurd price of $1,000 for it in the first game and time-travel through millennia just to re-eat it in the second game.note

    Penny
The tritagonist of Plants vs. Zombies 2. Penny is Crazy Dave's car (a pickup truck/recreational vehicle), that was converted into a robotic time machine. She takes Dave and the protagonist through the past and future.
  • Computer Voice: Penny is apparently speaking English (via her text bubbles), though her voice sounds like electronic beeping.
  • Cool Car: She's a highly intelligent talking car that can bypass the boundaries of time and space. Hardly can get cooler than that.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She has several moments of this towards Crazy Dave, such as:
Crazy Dave: Is this Last Stand?
Penny: No, this is First Sit. It was sarcasm.
  • Demoted to Extra: She appears in Garden Warfare 2 and Battle for Neighborville, but doesn't talk.
  • The Smart Girl: She does most of the exposition in the second game.
  • Straight Woman: Despite being created by him, she is usually the one who talks common sense into Dave, and tries to calm him down whenever he's acting up.
  • Time Machine: Penny brings both Dave and the PC through different timelines, such as: Ancient Egypt, the Wild West, the Far Future, the Dark Ages, etc.

    Stinky the Snail
A snail that can be purchased in the first game after the Zen Garden is unlocked. He helps the player collect coins produced by plants in the Zen Garden.
