"INNOCENCE DOESN'T GET YOU FAR."
"Lucas..."

The main antagonist of the game. A soul-stealing shapeshifting spirit-like Eldritch Abomination that takes on a form similar to that of Mario.

  • Acrofatic: Despite being even more portly than Mario's resident Acrofatic Wario, he is quite agile and more than capable of keeping up with the slimmer Luigi.
  • Affably Evil: Despite being an evil soul-stealing monster, Word of God states that he has adopted part of Mario's attitude, meaning that he's surprisingly polite.
  • Ancient Evil: Word of God states that he's existed since the creation of the universe itself.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Although not much of it is shown in the game (yet), MX has the power to control the size of his body, and according to one of FrazzDude's tweet, he can even turn gigantic.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: He has completely empty black eyes.
  • Clothing Appendage: According to Word of God, all of the "clothes" he wears are merely part of his body, which explains why they change in color once he shifted from his Mario form to his more monstrous form.
  • Dark Is Evil: He's completely dressed in black and dark red, and he's a murderous monster that steals souls.
  • Evil Is Bigger: He’s twelve feet tall!
  • Eldritch Abomination: He's a soul-stealing spirit who has existed since the beginning of time itself with Reality Warping powers who has a preference for children's souls that, according to Word of God, likes to haunt Super Mario games to lure in victims.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: His voice is extremely deep and heavily bitcrushed to disturbing effect.
  • Fat Bastard: His body is noticeably more portly than that of Mario's, and he is... not a nice guy, to say the least.
    • When he wears his Mario facade, he’s both skinnier and friendlier.
  • Faux Affably Evil: While he's usually genuinely Affably Evil, in a Gamejolt post by Taco Games showing what he did to Lucas before shoving him into the game, it shows him greeting Lucas with a ":D" emoticon and telling him he will have to "sleep for a bit" and that the "lights (the flash of light that Lucas saw before being trapped into the game) won't hurt", as if he's trying not to make it obvious to Lucas that he wants to kill him.
  • Ghostly Gape: His default expression. His mouth opens even more unnaturally wide in the opening cutscene of World 1-2.
  • Harmful to Minors: Lucas being eight years old does not in any way exclude him from ending up as one of MX's victims, and Word of God says that he targets younger victims specifically by haunting Mario games.
  • Impostor Forgot One Detail: When disguised, MX looks almost exactly like Mario, but Word of God is that MX's overalls don't have buttons, which is what gives away his identity. In addition, his eyes lack the implied shine of Mario's sprites because, well, he doesn't have eyes.
  • The Juggernaut: There's nothing that will stop his chase after Lucas. Brick blocks and steel pipes in his way? He bulldozes right through them. Falling down a bottomless pit? He simply jumps back up while screaming "WAHOO!". Even after Lucas manages to escape him by going through a pipe, he makes it clear that he will reach him eventually.
  • Morphic Resonance: His true form as an evil spirit has a huge mouth full of realistic teeth and no eyes, and all of the forms he takes have human-like teeth and completely empty eyesockets.
  • Power Up Letdown: Word of God says that MX is able to use powerups, but doesn't as his natural abilities make them redundant.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: One of the twists to his version of Super Mario Bros is that none of the ? Blocks work and there are no coins, meaning there's no way for his victims to obtain power-ups they could use to fight back or get extra lives.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: He has a blood-red and black outfit, indicating his evil nature.
  • Super-Strength: He's strong enough to bulldoze through every single brick and pipe throughout all of Level 1-1 in his chase for Lucas, and when he falls into a seemingly-Bottomless Pit, he just jumps back up, all while yelling Mario's signature "WAHOO".
  • Undeathly Pallor: His skin is a sickly white, in contrast to Mario and Luigi/Lucas's warmer tones.
  • Villainous Friendship: As revealed by Taco Games himself, MX and Lord X are actually good friends.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifter: As shown during the pre-RUN cutscene, he can freely shift between looking exactly like Mario and his more monstrous true form. He also has an in-between form that looks mostly like Mario in his big form, but with some of his true form's mutations, as well as a darker color scheme.
    • In fact, one tweet by FrazzDude even confirms that he can adapt his form to that of any character in the videogames he enters, showing him turning into monstrous versions of Sonic The Hedgehog and Boyfriend.
  • Would Hurt a Child: The first thing he does after spotting Lucas (who's merely 8 years old) is chase him across Level 1-1 to kill him. In fact, according to Word of God, MX actually targets only children, since they're easy to manipulate.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: He stole Lucas' soul and put it inside the Luigi vessel.

    Luigi/Lucas Everett
An 8-year-old boy who got a "special" edition of Super Mario Bros. for his birthday. Unfortunately, said edition turns out to be inhabited by MX, who steals his soul and puts it into a Luigi-based vessel.
  • Adaptational Badass: In the mockup Friday Night Funkin' song by Frazzdude (the game's director) "Fighting Back", he actually decides to fight back against MX by challenging him to a rap battle, rather than running away from him.
    • He also has a D-Sides equivalent named Mark who's just as willing to fight back against the D-Sides version of MX, LX.
  • Action Survivor: He’s a young boy who can escape MX.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: Getting your soul sucked into a Deadly Game, watching a Toad get bloodily sheared in half after being thrown against a pole, being chased by a bloodthirsty Digital Abomination... let's just say that Lucas isn't exactly having the greatest birthday.
  • And I Must Scream: The entire game is one of these situations to him. After getting killed by an epileptic seizure, he got his soul stolen by MX and then shoved into a twisted version of his favorite game, where he's doomed to die over and over at the hands of MX.
  • Children Are Innocent: Given that it's something MX taunts him over.
    "INNOCENCE DOESN'T GET YOU FAR."
  • Dead All Along: A blog post confirms he died from epilepsy. Doubles as Died on Their Birthday.
  • Meaningful Name: His name has the same starting two letters as "Luigi", who happens to be the vessel his soul is transferred into.
  • Off with His Head!: His fate, should he fail to outrun MX, is getting decapitated and then having his head impaled on a stake.
  • Overnight Age-Up: Since his vessel is Luigi, who's in his mid-twenties.
  • Resurrective Immortality: It's confirmed that inside the game, Lucas has infinite lives. Though given the reason as to why, it's more of a curse than a blessing.
  • Rapid-Fire Nail Biting: According to Word of God, he doesn't wear gloves because he has an habit of biting his nails when he gets nervous.
  • Voices Are Not Mental: In-game, he speaks in Luigi's voice.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He has a fear of spiders.

    Uncle Mark
The uncle of Lucas, who buys him the copy of Super Mario Bros. MX resides in.
  • Meaningful Name: His name starts with the first three letters of "Mario", and in a doodle made by Mari0_Bot of him and Lucas before the events of the game, it's shown that he's pretty similar to Mario in appearance.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Him buying the haunted copy of SMB for his nephew's birthday is the reason why Lucas ends up inside the game for MX.

Other

    Nekoamon

"Your bravery won't save you, BECAUSE I SMELL FEAR."
"I will play with your fear like I play with your patience."
The main antagonist of the April Fools update that takes the from of a twisted Syobon.

  • Cats Are Mean: He is a big cat-like beast who will constantly chase the player.
  • Dark Is Evil: He's completely pitch-black and wants to kill Lucas.
  • The Juggernaut: There is NOTHING that will stop him from trying to reach his equivalent of Lucas. During his chase for him, he smashes through bricks, sends pipes flying away and at one point, he even destroys the entire floor of the level just to try to kill Lucas.
  • Ret-Canon: He actually exists in the main timeline, being MX's pet.
  • Troll: If his quote "I will play with your fear like I play with your patience" is to go by, he seems to enjoy making the player rage, which is appropriate considering what game he’s haunting and the tactics he uses.

     Mark
The D-Sides equivalent of Lucas. He's the protagonist of the mockup D-Sides remix of FrazzDude's Fighting Back song.
  • Meaningful Name: Just like with Lucas before him, his name's first letters are the same as those of the name of the vessel he inhabits, that being Mario.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted; he shares his first name with Lucas' uncle, yet Taco Games has explained on the official Mario '85 discord server that he isn't him, because LX is just as uninterested in targeting adults as his canon self.

     LX
The D-Sides equivalent of MX and antagonist of the mockup D-Sides remix of FrazzDude's Fighting Back song.
  • Lean and Mean: He's inhumanly lanky, and it's quite clear that he's just as malicious as MX.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Like his canon counterpart, LX only targets children, meaning the Mark he tortures isn’t the same as Lucas’ uncle.

Non-Canon

     Todd
DastardlyDeacon's incarnation of Mark, the D-Sides equivalent of Lucas, and the protagonist of the upcoming D-Sides remix of Game Over.
  • Meaningful Name: Just like with Lucas and Mark before him, his name's first letters are the same as those of the name of the vessel he inhabits, that being Toad.

     WX
DastardlyDeacon's incarnation of LX, the D-Sides equivalent of MX, and a freakish monster resembling Wario. He is antagonist of the D-Sides remixes of Powerdown and Game Over.
  • Fat Bastard: He's inhumanly obese, he's quite a giant towering monster, and it's quite clear that he's just as malicious as MX and LX before him.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Like his canon D-Sides counterpart, WX only targets children.
