Abyssmare

A solitary abyss that lays waste to everything
An American DJ unit based in New York who have come to Japan to prove they are the best in the world. They are produced by former L.M.O member, Sho Mitsuhashi. They consist of Neo as vocals, Sophia as DJ, Elsie as dancer and chorus, and Weronika as dancer and subvocals.
    General
  • The Ace: A talented DJ unit with individually talented members that challenges the skills of some of the strongest Japanese units.
  • Anime Accent Absence: Despite being American, they speak Japanese with no noticable foreign accent, much less the iconic "New Yorker" accent. While this would make sense if they only spoke that way amongst themselves and other Americans, that same native-sounding Japanese applies to conversations with people in Japan as well, such as their audiences. Their songs are also mainly in Japanese, with the English lines they sing clearly sounding like English-as-a-second-language. Other than a desire to defeat DJ units in Japan, none of the four members have expressed an unusually strong interest in Japanese culture and none of them have been confirmed to have any Japanese lineage; the closest possible explanation is that they're managed by a Japanese producer, Sho Mitsuhashi, who ran away from Japan for personal reasons, but given that it takes a considerable amount of time for a native English-speaker with no prior experience with Asian languages to learn Japanese, the four members are unusually fluent for the amount of time they've spent under his contract. Just to make them stick out more, Photon Maiden is an all-Japanese unit (like the rest of side:origin) and not only do their songs have more English, they sound more fluent in it.
  • Big Ego, Hidden Depths: Outwardly, they are a bunch of smug, showboating divas who think other DJ units have no business being on the stage, and who think of themselves as the best in the world. However, their real motiviatons lie in troubled personal pasts and emotional baggage.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Their songs have a lot of English lines, which makes sense considering they're meant to be American. It's not as much as Photon Maiden though.
  • Break the Haughty: In season 7 of the side:nova arc, After rising to stardom in record time and being drunk on their celebrity status as they promise to crush the Japanese units at D4FES. USA, their career, reputation, and ego crash and burn horribly when Neo suffers a strange breakdown on-stage after having watched Lumina's performance that prevents her from singing. They fail to pull together and save their act, bickering amongst themselves all the while, forcing Sho to intervene and cut their performance short as they are booed off the stage. The season story ends with the four members transferring to Yoba Academy, with Weronika, Elsie, and Sophia looking pretty humbled, and Neo becoming The Hermit who refuses to leave her room, singing nearly nonstop because she refuses to be anything short of "best in the world." They get better in the last chapter of the side:nova arc after Neo has an ephipany about why she sings in the first place, and they become more akin to a Foreign Wrestling Heel rather than outright antagonistic.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: They like to participate in events where they compete against other units. Almost always, they end up winning every single vote. When they go up against UniChØrd, that unit still loses, but manages to score a single vote (from Rinku); despite still having a clear-cut win, Abyssmare are infuriated.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Three out of its four members had some pretty awful upbringings:
    • Neo: Her father disowned her because her singing was not up to his standards, him having pushed her to be a singer as successful as her late mother.
    • Weronika: She lived in a very poor neighborhood and could not afford an education, and had to make money off the bets of singing contests to provide for her siblings.
    • Sophia: She was horribly depressed and wanted to kill herself. If she had not heard Neo's singing right as she was about to leap off a building fifth floor, she would very likely be dead by now.
  • Darker and Edgier:
    • They have a dark, red and black theme, aggressive songs, and their name is even a Portmanteau of Abyss and Nightmare. Fitting for an antagonistic unit.
    • This goes for their personalities as well. The side:origin units are all generally pleasant and get along well both at the intra-group and inter-group level; even if they have the occasional infighting, those usually get resolved by the end of whatever story arc the conflict takes place. A lot of the inter-unit interactions lead to collaborations between units, and the worst that really happens between different units is a Friendly Rivalry. But Abyssmare's members have trouble getting along with one another overall and they often perform in competition against one other unit, often antagonizing their opponent and their MCing sounds like they're trying to kill the careers of that other unit.
  • Flawless Victory: They're infamous for holding unit-to-unit duels against other units and winning them with every single vote each time. While they still do this to UniChØrd, one person (Rinku) gives a single vote to UniChØrd, which puts a major crack in the unit's collective vanity.
  • Gimmick Level: In D4DJ Groovy Mix, their songs' charts have hold notes that cross lanes, a feature not seen in any other songs in the game. In songs where they collaborate with other units, like the "LOVE!HUG!GROOVY!" series, only their parts have drag-holds.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: During RAVE events in Groovy Mix, you may encounter an NPC Abyssmare opponent with stats that are obscured, instead only showing "Unmeasuarble". Challenging them will guarantee a loss, but you will also gain much more rewards than winning against a regular opponent.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: Once the top DJ unit in the United States, their disastrous attempt of a performance at D4FES. USA (caused by a broken-down Neo being unable to sing and the rest of the unit utterly fail to pick up the slack) causes them to be absolutely cancelled by their fans and lose all pop culture relevance.
  • Jerkass: The group is generally unpleasant to interact with, both for outsiders and each other. Neo is openly cold-hearted and often talks down to other units, Elsie has a group of bodyguards who she employs to for her retaliatory needs, and Weronika is always picking fights with Neo and generally has a short temper. Sophia is the only one who isn't particularly crude to others, but she's too busy being a mental wreck who fawns over Neo to be a genuinely nice person to others.
  • No Full Name Given: They are the only unit whose members' surnames are not given; whether they have Only One Name each or their surnames are simply not revealed is not stated. As of "XROSS∞BEAT" Episode 4, the reveal that Neo's late father was known as Doctor Nova suggests that her full name is Neo Nova, but this is not confirmed.
  • Pride: Applies to three out of the four members and the unit as a whole. They want to prove that they are the best in the world, but they also want to prove they are better than each other, which means they don't always get along with each other. This ultimately becomes their Fatal Flaw in the U.S. iteration of D4FES., when Neo is unable to sing. Their performance rapidly falls apart, and their once-loyal fandom turns into hatedom as they boo and jeer at Abyssmare for their showboating and toxic-competitive attitudes which ended up being All for Nothing.
  • The Prima Donna: Three of their four members are very egotistical and not only try to prove themselves as the best in the world, but they even put down other DJ units in the process. Unfortunately this also leads to the group often fighting amongst themselves whenever disagreements arise, and it's a wonder Weronika hasn't resorted to brawling against her unitmates nor has Elsie actually used her bodyguards to brutalize her fellow members.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: Despite putting on a facade of being confident and smug divas who treat other DJ units like insects, they also end up fighting a lot with each other. Weronika sees Neo as The Rival due to Neo besting Weronika at a singing competition that the latter depended on to provide for her siblings, Elsie throws around threats of mutilation via her bodyguards like they're Halloween candy, and poor Sophia is the Nervous Wreck who tries to get them to reconcile. This comes to a head at D4FES. USA when Neo cannot sing and the remaining three can do nothing to salvage their set, causing them to be booed off the stage and cancelled by their fans for being all talk and no show.

    Neo

Neo

"You should feel honoured that I will trample you down"
Voiced by: May'n (Japanese)

The vocalist of Abyssmare, an overseas DJ unit that suddenly emerged in Japan. Though she has a cool-headed personality and sees everyone around her as nothing but pawns, she is a top-notch vocalist. With her overwhelming vocals and charisma, she has rapidly gained popularity, yet she is not satisfied with this. She diligently takes lessons every day to become the world's best vocalist.
  • The Ace: She seems to succeed at just about everything she does, from singing to housework.
  • Big Ego, Hidden Depths: She appears confident and prideful, but she's really trying to prove her worth to her father who abandoned her.
  • Child Prodigy: She gained perfect pitch when she was 3 years old, started singing opera when she was 5 years old, and started composing songs at 7 years old.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Losing to Lumina at the D4 Fes, realizing that she's nowhere close to being the best singer in the world and hearing that Lumina is a virtual reincarnation of the real best singer causes her to have a breakdown, up to considering suicide. Luckily, Sophia snaps her out of it.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father abandoned her a few years after her mother died because he didn't think she was talented enough to carry on her mother's legacy as a singer. Said father later died as well, realizing too late he made a horrible mistake in the way he raised her.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother died when she was nine.
  • Parental Neglect: Her father abandoned her when she was a child and left her to live with her grandparents.
  • The Stoic: When she's not being haughty, she's generally apathetic to most things and people around her, including her groupmates. After her Character Development at the end of side:nova, she gets better, although she still has trouble expressing her feelings well.

    Sophia

Sophia

"Sorry, sorry, sorry..."
Voiced by: Yuuka Aisaka (Japanese)

The DJ of Abyssmare, who is good at matching the vibes of the dance floor. Though she rarely speaks onstage, she has many fans due to her cool appearance. Growing up in a poor family, she withdrew from the world and had low self-esteem. Hearing Neo's voice saved her life and helped her take her first step forward, and as a result, Sophia worships her fanatically.
  • Fangirl: Completely obsessed with Neo.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Delivers a slap to Neo in the final season of the "side:nova" story arc when Neo, who's still in a massive depression brought about by Abyssmare's tragic failure of a performance at D4FES USA. and being abandoned by two people who she was obessively singing for (her father and Sho), declares that she should just kill herself because she has no purpose left to her singing, the only talent she's ever known. Sophia tells her that she doesn't need to sing for fame or to be "the best", and that all of Abyssmare view her as a True Companion and not just a tool for others' use. This also neatly encapsulates Sophia's Character Development, having gone from sickly obsession for Neo to a genuine bond with concern for her well-being. Sophia apologies for hitting Neo afterwards, but Neo, filled with a new lease on life, responds with thanks and reassures her no apology is needed.
Weronika: I don't believe it. Sophia just slapped Neo...
Elsie: Of all people, Sophia?! She struck Neo-sama!
Sophia: Neo-sama, you... You... You saved my life! From the moment I heard your powerful voice, saw your poise and confidence in the park...I admired you and found courage through you. The way you paid no heed to what others thought, established dominence by your mere presence... But now, Neo-sama? You're not being yourself. You're trying to be somebody else, that's wrong! You're already the best singer in the world to me!
  • I Owe You My Life: She's obsessed with Neo and dedicates her life to Neo, crediting her for saving her life. Sophia was in a deep depression when she was younger and thought everyone she knew hated her, and almost killed herself; she was on the fifth floor of a building and was about to jump, but the sound of Neo's singing captivated her and dissuaded her from ending it all.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Her message if she gives login bonuses:
Sophia: S-sorry, so sorry, I know you'd rather have anybody else give you this... You'd rather skip my dialogue altogether...
  • Stalker with a Crush: She can get a little creepy about her crush on Neo, following her around constantly and knowing just about everything about her.

    Elsie

Elsie

"Great, great ♪"
Voiced by: Tomomi-Jiena Sumi (Japanese)

The self-proclaimed "Number 2" of Abyssmare. Despite her adorable appearance, she is fastidious and intelligent. Practicing ballet since childhood and being unable to stomach cheap food make her seem like a young lady who grew up in the lap of luxury, but her family's exact business remains unknown. She and Weronika do not get along and often quarrel.
  • Evil Counterpart: Could be seen as one to Esora: they're both rich girls who use their wealth to assist their respective groups' activities, but whereas Esora is sweet, courteous, and always thinking of her friends, Elsie is cunning, self-centered and is eager to sic her bodyguards on people when she doesn't get her way. At least until her character development.
  • The Men in Black: She has a group of bodyguards dressed in black coats and sunglasses that follow her around.
  • Mafia Princess: Heavily implied; her father's business is unknown, but the way he's described as a powerful figure who can easily ruin or even "take out" his clients, alongside Elsie's bodyguards and their being able to kill people, hints he likely is involved with organized crime.
  • Ship Tease: The game likes to hint at a sort of Slap-Slap-Kiss type relationship between her and Weronika. Hayate even asks her if she and Weronika are dating at one point.
  • The Smart Guy: Next to Neo, she's easily the smartest of Abyssmare and uses her sense of strategy to get the group ahead.
  • Third-Person Person: Refers to herself as "Elsie" rather than "I" or "me".
  • Tiny Tyrannical Girl: She's a rich girl who uses Abyssmare for her own means, and she has a group of shady bodyguards who follow her around whom she can order to disembody people.
  • Tsundere: She can be like this towards Weronika and Sophia, ordering them around and bickering but still caring for them deep down. This trope even gets discussed in her birthday conversation, when Elsie has trouble expressing her gratitude for the letter she got from Weronika's siblings, who thanked her and her family for sending them food as part of Weronika's birthday celebration, and Weronika outright calls her by the trope name.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Has snow-white hair and is rather mean and sneaky.

    Weronika

Weronika

"I'll beat Neo and become the main vocalist!"
Voiced by: Misuzu Yamada (Japanese)

Though she is a member of Abyssmare, Weronika has a strong rivalry with Neo and often picks fights with her. She is also quite physically strong, is athletic, and has sharp dance moves. People are often frightened by her short temper and rough way of speaking, but she has a compassionate side and caring side too, especially towards children. She bickers with Elsie a lot but usually ends up losing.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She's quite tomboyish and has one of the shortest haircuts in the cast.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Grew up in a poor and dangerous environment where she couldn't get an education and had to look after her younger siblings. She would provide from them using money she won in Vale Tudo matches.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: She's quick to anger and start fights.
  • Hidden Depths: She's very caring towards children and is good at looking after them. It's revealed that this is because she had to look after her younger siblings by herself when she was younger.
  • Ship Tease: She gets this with Elsie, with Hayate even asking if they were dating when being interrogated by them.
  • Worthy Opponent: She sees Neo as a rival and is intent on stealing her mantle as "best singer in the world". However, she gets genuinely concerned for Neo when the latter breaks down at D4FES. USA and subsequently sequesters herself in her new apartment in Japan; she isn't interested in "beating" someone who is unable to be at her best.
