Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

  • Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni: Yoshihito Kanamori from "Mesomeso-san" (the first chapter) started as the homeroom teacher of Marie Moriya, a young girl bullied by her classmates. He used to defend her from the bullies, until the stress of his job got to him and he started to take his stress out on Marie. His supplementary lessons include molesting her and putting it on camera. When Marie gathered up enough courage to stand up to him, he strangles her to death, singing her a song about graduation from life to death while doing so, then dumps her corpse in the old school's septic tank. He also considered murdering other children when he thought that they were eavesdropping. When he encounters Marie's spirit in the restroom, he gives her a long "The Reason You Suck" Speech about her not going to the police to report on him while she was still alive and called her an imbecile who couldn't fend for herself. He then opens the door to one of the bathroom stalls, and upon finding that Marie has apparently physically manifested, he tries to strangle Marie a second time. When the deed was seemingly done, he proceeds to rape the corpse when he notices it was still there. While he claims that he did all this out of love for Marie, it's ultimately proven hollow.
  • Chew: The Vampire, also known as The Collector (real name unknown), is a Serbian killer and Cibopath who harnesses the legends of vampires to become feared. In truth, The Vampire uses his Cibopath powers to absorb the powers of others, killing, butchering and eating them to gain their abilities (even relatively useless abilities); at least several dozen, and possibly more, are killed in this way. The Vampire kidnaps Tony Chu's twin sister, Toni, and attempts to gain her abilities through eating her limbs. When this fails, he furiously snaps Toni's neck. When Tony's friends attack his hideout, The Vampire attempts to slaughter them, taking great pleasure in trying himself to devour Tony's teenage daughter Olive. When he and Tony finally face off, The Vampire mocks him by saying how he will hunt down Olive and devour her. Egotistical, monstrous and cruel, the only thing driving The Vampire is his quest to become the perfect being in existence, no matter whom he has to devour.
  • Mission: Impossible III: Owen Davian is an Arms Dealer who is known worldwide for selling his weapons on the black market to terrorists. Capturing an agent sent to spy on him, Davian tortures her and has a bomb planted in her skull that he detonates when she is rescued. When captured by Ethan Hunt, Davian gleefully taunts him about her death and promises to do the same to both Hunt and his wife. After escaping, Davian kidnaps Ethan's wife and forces him to steal The Rabbit's Foot, a highly a dangerous weapon he plans to sell to terrorists to start a war. Retrieving The Rabbit's Foot, Davian disguises his security chief as Ethan's wife, then kills her in front of him, both to torture Ethan, and because his security chief had failed him. After brutally beating Ethan, Davian tries to force him to watch as he murders his wife. Never losing his calm demeanor, even while committing his atrocities, Owen Davian stood out as the most wicked villain in the Mission: Impossible film franchise.
  • Savage Streets: The Scars, comprised of the leader Jake and the Co-Dragons Red and Fargo, are a trio of needlessly chaotic miscreants with a penchant for random violence and petty retribution against any perceived harm to their ego, no matter how slight. After Brenda fills the Scars' car with trash in revenge for the Scars nearly running over her deaf young sister Heather, Jake leads the brutal beating and gang-rape of Heather in a school bathroom, with Red and Fargo quarreling over whose "turn" it is and Jake forcing unwilling recruit Vince to rape Heather against his will. The Scars also later track down and kill Brenda's best friend Francine in revenge for a cut she dealt Jake during a brawl. The Scars are all individually nasty in their own right. Red and Fargo are a duo of sexually-abusive psychopaths with a knack for molesting women (often outside Jake's consent) at random and taking glee on how they desire to "...fuck [Brenda] and then slice [her] to pieces." Jake himself is a petty, domineering bully who happily assaults those late on drug payments, and later runs down Vince after the latter drops out from the Scars after their monstrosities. Maniacal, wantonly violent, and utterly without ethics, the Scars take delight in how miserable they can make the world around them.
  • Halo: Broken Circle: The Prophet of Exquisite Devotion, born I'ra Be'Ar, is a power-hungry Smug Snake who regularly bullies lower ranking Prophets and harbors extreme contempt for their allies the Sangheili. Not only does he happily go along with the Prophet of Truth's plans to exterminate the Sangheili, but he tortures several captive Councilors to death for no apparent reason other than because he can, using gravity torture that's described in sickening detail. When Zo Resken refuses to participate in the executions, Exquisite Devotion orders his fellow Prophet to be tortured to death as well. While previous characters in the book were depicted with Grey-and-Gray Morality, Exquisite is its first to have no redeeming qualities, and marks the story taking a darker turn.
  • Perfect Assassins: Dr. Samuel Greely in this Made-for-TV Movie is a Psycho Psychologist who wants to test the Skinner box on humans. He started his tests on Ben Carroway, and framed Ben's mother as being involved when he's caught. After fleeing to Mexico, he starts an operation where he kidnaps children and locks them in boxes where he electrifies their sole food source and prevents them from forming any emotional attachments, turning them into human attack dogs, right down to the lack of language skills. He then sends then to assassinate people and then kill themselves. After he captures Ben, who's investigating his program, he shows him the Training from Hell that his victims go through, laughing sadistically as one gets his ass handed to him. When a subject fails, he locks them in the box again, which causes them to have trauma-induced panic attacks.
  • Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni: Nafumi Shintani from Renoir of the Art Room was an art room teacher who seemed to be a Cool Teacher, given her popularity among the young male students. In reality, Nafumi was a prolific child molester who got off on the suffering of young boys, deeming it as beautiful. To this end, she invites young boys into the art room, and she would offer them cups of drug-laced tea, after which she would proceed to torture their unconscious bodies with cigarettes and palette knives. In addition to this, she had dozens of sketches of abused boys in her desk. One of her past victims, Yuuki Noda, loved his teacher to the point that he allowed her to abuse him if it meant his feelings for her were returned. Eventually, Yuuki tried to escape her, but she grabbed his shoulder, which caused him to trip and fall underneath a table, resulting in a heavy bust falling on his head. A week later, she drugged and attempted to torture another boy, but she was stopped by the titular Renoir of the Art Room (who was really Higanbana filling in for the real Renoir). She expressed zero remorse for being indirectly responsible for Yuuki's death, stating that he was a "stupid kid" who deserved to die. Depraved and perverted, Shintani repeatedly showed that she cared only for herself and her lusts.

Damien Darhk doesn't really have standarts, it's more Pragmatic Villainy really (shown in that he has no problems threatening Quentin with Laurel's safety).

He does however honestly sympathise with Quentin on a personal level after Sara is resurrected mindlessly, so yeah, he is a no.

Oh, since you are working on the MLP examples ACW, I have an update on Kabuto. In the (still ongoing) Finale arc, Discord releases him from his imprisonment and lets him take over a hospital and perform experiments on the patients. At one point, he comes close to [[Lobotomy lobotomizing]] Sweetie Belle.

PS: I do not think we have to update Reharmonised Discord yet since the arc is still ongoing and he will do more in the future, but just so you know, he has turned Equestria into an amalgamation of a bunch of MLP Dark Fics such as Cupcakes, Cheerilees Garden, and Rainbow Factory. I am telling you this because I have good news for all of you who despise those Dark Fics and others like it: The Finale arc is acting as a deconstruction of MLP Dark Fics. Discord has teamed up with his cousin, the In-Universe creator of every MLP Dark Fic ever. The two have transformed Equestria into a Crapsack World that incorporates a bunch of Dark Fics into it, and the Cutie Mark Crusaders have to traverse this world and turn the mane six (who have been twisted into Ron the Death Eater versions of themselves from these works) back to their normal selves. So far, the CMC have easily defeated every enemy and overcome every obstacle they have come across, and they have managed to turn all but Applejack back to their regular selves before so much as a single pony could be killed in any of these scenarios. Right now, the arc has given happy endings to all of those Dark Fics. If any of you on here would like to see a mass deconstruction of all those Dark Fics we hate, you might want to check it out.

May I ask a hypothetical? Just a hypothetical; I don't have a specific character in mind here. Could a character who ruins the lives of dozens or hundreds of people in non-fatal ways, but never directly causes any deaths, qualify for this trope? A character that might fit this description could be, for instance, a serial embezzler, a crooked stock trader, a Morally Bankrupt Banker, or the mastermind of a pyramid scam.

Okay I might have found two potential candidates both from the same show. Namely the British Crime Drama: A Touch of Frost staring David Jason. I will post the other one as soon as I’ve had time to reconfirm some details on them (so probably this weekend).

The first is Captain Charlie Lawson from “No Other Love” in Season Four.

Who is he: A dominating Patriarch in his extended family (his wife, his adult son Peter, and his three grandchildren: Matthew, Rachel and Suzanna) who lives with him and a retired captain from the Royal Parachute regiment, Captain Lawson at first appears to be a stuffy and controlling old man, but as the episode goes on he reveals himself to be one of the worst forms of an abusive relative.

What does he do: Captain Lawson has been abusing his son for a long time, to the point that even though he’s presently a middle aged man, Peter is still terrified of his father and very clearly under his thumb. A military man, Captain Lawson is used to being obeyed and obsessed with what he considers disabling saying without “there is only chaos.” He likewise makes no secret of his belief his son is a failure, and openly berates him.

However that is nothing compared to what he did to his Granddaughters. He’s been raping and sexually abusing them for years now, starting when they were pre-teens. He kept it up against his oldest granddaughter Joanna (who by this point is only just in her early twenties); until she finally had enough and ran off to Blackpool to get away from him. However he also began abusing his middle granddaughter Rachel before Joanna left (at the present of the episode Rachel is still under sixteen and it’s been going on for years by this point). He kept the children under his control, by threatening to kill them if they told anyone to truth.

Eventually it went as far as accidentally getting Rachel pregnant with his child. His grandson Matt, spent years trying to protect his sisters, but was limited by the fact he was equally terrified of Charlie (Matt’s around seventeen to nineteen by the point of the episode).

To pay for his sister’s abortion, Matt stole a gun from his employer, and robbed his own father at his store to get the money. Investigating this crime brought the attention of Inspector Jack Frost and DC Clive Bernard (Frosts young apprentice, friend and temporary roommate) to the Lawson family. Before his son went off give a statement, Captain Lawson warned Peter not to let slip anything or he would regret it.

Worried that Peter would tell Frost what he’s done; taking advantage of the fact he was robbed at gunpoint. That night when Peter was playing with his trains in his den, Captain Lawson shot him. The next day Peter gave Rachel the money, so she could take the train to Blackpool. There she would stay with Joanna until after she had the abortion.

Tracking down Matt, Frost managed to push him to revealing the sexual abuse, however due to Matt’s hatred of his father (for knowing about what Charlie was doing, but being too afraid do anything about it) Frost misinterprets that it was Peter who was abusing the girls not Charlie. Being still too afraid of their Grandfather to talk, they let him keep this assumption. Frost even asking Captain Lawson to be present when he interrogates Rachel, revealing Rachel spilled. Never the less he’s happy to shift the blame to his son.

Later Frost and Bernard catch Matt returning the stolen gun. Frost is convinced Matt killed his father to protect his sisters, however finding out from the lab the gun hadn’t been fired in years, he realises it was Matt who committed the robbery. Confronting him, finally Matt lets slip the truth that it was Charlie who was abusing his sisters not Peter.

Taking Frost and Bernard to Rachel, it’s revealed the two have effectively run away from home, knowing they can’t go back now that their grandfather knows they’ve spilled. Matt was planning to go rescue his youngest sister Suzanna that night (Charlie hasn’t started abusing her yet, but that’s merely because she’s only around eight at this point and he’s waiting till she’s older).

Going back to his home, Frost goes to confront Captain Lawson. Predicting Frost’s arrival he has put on his old uniform, and with his revolver he holds Frost at gunpoint. Acting like he is Military Captain in charge of the situation. However Frost has no time for his games, and calls him out how unpleasant and sick he really is. At one point, Captain Lawson’s wife stumbles in; however this does little to interrupt the event. Captain Lawson plans to kill Frost; however Frost manages to weaken his resolve. But not enough, he was about to shoot him when Clive entered the room.

Captain Lawson fired killing Clive, and then realising the game was up he committed suicide.

Heinous Standard: Now “A Touch Of Frost” is a dark series, Inspector Frost often confronts murders, rapists, thugs and all around unpleasant people. Memorable additions include a sociopathic smug kidnapper played by a young Marc Warren. Episodes generally end Bittersweet at best and outright bleak at worst. Often with a lot of innocent people hurt or dead and scars left that will probably never heal.

However at the same time, it’s firmly grounded in reality and thus has a realistic overall heinous standard i.e. rarely more than one serious crime committed per criminal. Likewise it’s rare for there to be any more than two or three deaths maximum in an episode (and quite often at least one of them is not by the same person).

Captain Lawson stands out as one of the most heinous. Being an gold standard abusive parent, who terrifies his whole family into submission. A long standing rapist and hebephile, who raped his own granddaughters, and murdered not only his own son but the perfectly innocent Clive Bernard for simply walking in on him at the wrong moment.

Now there is one other villain in the series I think is just as heinous, but I’ll raise comparisons in the next effort post.

Any redeeming Traits or Freudian excuse: This is mildly tricky, now there are a few mild ripples. First he is seen several times playing with his youngest granddaughter Suzanna and seems fond of her. However the reveal he was planning to rape her to, once she came of old enough pretty much destroys it (it’s slightly implied he might have started already now all his other granddaughters are gone at the end).

He lives with his wife and has done for many years. However he never once shows her any care or compassion. His wife is the only one who isn’t aware of his abuse, however this is mostly because she is in denial and refuses to accept it. Even at the end when Charlie admits to it.

Now he does go through a minor Villainous Breakdown, when Frost’s words start to affect him at the end. However he never shows any remorse for his crimes. And immediately snaps back to planning to kill Inspector Frost the second asks him to give him his gun.

He claims to love his granddaughters, but really his abuse speaks for its self in this regard.

As for Freudian Excuse, Frost speculates the fact he never got a chance to go into any war with the military is behind his controlling nature (something he implies is true). Likewise he admits to being envious at the fact his son managed to father four children, when he only manged one. However this in no way justifies anything he did to either his son or his grandchildren.

Frost sums him up as simply a weak and powerless man, who won’t except this fact and instead gets around it by abusing and controlling others. And at heart just another sick thug.

Conclusion: Really I think Captain Charlie Lawson could be a keeper, even if he has only two murders under his belt, that’s still more than most villains in the series. Likewise the years of child abuse, rape and incest certainly count for something.

What do you think, does he qualify?

@Hamburger: It depends on how great the extent is. I think we already have a few people who fit in that category; J.B. Allen from Criminal Minds, who was a rapist, not a murderer, and Stanley from the Freak Show season of American Horror Story, who was only (indirectly) responsible for one murder.

@Hamburger- Probably not. Besides not likely meeting requisite heinousness, there probably isn't enough of a nexus between the evil act and some of the results. So like criminals of that type want to enrich themselves and either don't think or are indifferent to how their actions affect other people. They aren't generally setting out to ruin the lives of others.

The closest I could think of to what you suggested is the villain in the Poirot novel Curtain who was found to qualify. He never actually kills anyone himself but modeling himself after Shakespeare's Iago, deliberately manipulates other people into committing murder.

[up][up]Oh he very clearly was, he already did it twice before with his other granddaughters, its even slightly implied he might have already started (in their last interaction, she looks somewhat tramuatized as he says goodnight to her, quite unlike their interactions in the rest of the episode).

Likewise at one point he even tries to justify the abuse, claiming he didn't do anything to hurt them as he loves them. As the rest of the episode shows he's either delusional or lying.

Interesting, can't say I'm the same.

Oh, and speaking of rapists, where were we on Dr. Grant and Walsh ? Just want be sure. I remember down votes because of the films real dark morality, so I thought I'd sum up the films heinous standard; Grant and Walsh are two corrupt doctors, who hold "sex parties" where women are frequently drugged, raped and filmed, including the films Villain Protagonist Mary. Mary's own heinousness includes torturing Grant over at least several days before killing him (for y'know, raping her), kills a cop who found Grant, uses her mob friends to help run her body modification business and calls a hit on Walsh in a No, Except Yes way.
