Ripples in the Pond is a One Piece Self-Insert Fan Fiction written by TheRealEvanSG and edited by EXNativo, as well as ShadowMeister and The Patient One.

Main character Evan Johnson is thrown out of his quiet Ohio life one day, and into the world of One Piece, specifically the middle of the Arlong Park Arc. This is done by a (Bastard) Random Omnipotent Being who goes by the name of the All-Seeing Author, and sometimes sends Evan snarky emails, which can be read on Evan's iPod. After consuming the Tempest-Tempest Fruit, Evan joins the Straw Hats with the goal to write the greatest story the world's ever seen. The consequence of this, however, is that the canon will never be the same again. After all, drop a stone in a pond...

Tropes A - C

• Acceptable Breaks from Canon:
  • It makes sense that Nojiko would train under Genzo to become skilled in fighting, so that if they ever rebelled, she would be able to fight.
  • The Straw Hats not fighting and scaring off Fullbody due to being held back by a storm is reasonable enough.
  • So is the reason for Fullbody going the opposite direction as the Straw Hats pre-Loguetown, in canon: He was given orders to capture the Arlong Pirates.
  • The reason Mr. 3 and Miss Goldenweek came to Little Garden was because Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine's Day called for backup.
• Accidental Public Confession: Vivi accidentally calls Mr. 0 "Crocodile" in front of Mr. 9 and Miss Monday... without them even realizing she did so. Unfortunately for her, that wasn't the end of it; Evan, without his being aware of it, had recorded it, and it was played to about fifty plus people.
• Acoustic License: Despite the force of the wind the Straw Hats would no doubt be experiencing from scaling a ten-thousand-meter mountain in around half an hour, on a ship, they can still hear each other talking just fine.
• Action Girl: Nojiko. She was able to take out an entire squadron of Marines on her own.
• Actually Pretty Funny:
  • In chapter 8, Evan, when the All-Seeing Author makes electricity puns after Luffy's saved by the lightning bolt.
  All-Seeing Author: What a shocking experience for Buggy and Cabaji! Coming so close to killing Luffy and failing probably hertz like crazy.
  Narration: I was too stupified to even groan. Besides, it was actually kind of funny.
  • Again in chapter 8, although this time done by Sanji to Evan.
  Sanji: I can take this guy easy. I gotta say, though, what you said was actually hilarious.
• Adaptational Badass:
  • A switched Point of View shows that Nojiko secretly trained under Genzo with a variety of weapons, in order to be able to fight Arlong and his men one day. She's adept enough to have taken out an entire squadron of Marines on her own.
  • Fonti, although being mere fodder taken out by Gum-Gum Pinwheel in canon, is actually one of Arlong's executives, and a master of Fishman Karate. He was even able to destroy Evan's Master and Crazy Hands with little problem.
• Alien Arts Are Appreciated: Nojiko and the Straw Hats are somehow aware of Hulk Hogan, despite him existing in our world. Word of God states that this is due to Hogan being a "universally understood concept. Even in other universes."
• Alien Space Bats: Why is the canon of One Piece changed so much in the Arlong Park Arc that Nojiko joins the crew? Simple — the Jerkass God known as the All-Seeing Author added a teen who's read up to chapter 842 into the plotline.
• April Fools' Day: The author posted an April Fool's Day omake in which the All-Seeing Author decides to Gender Bend the entire crew.
• Are We There Yet?: One of the Marines in Fullbody's division is bored enough to utter this stock phrase en route to the Conomi Islands. Fullbody is not amused.
• Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking:
  • The list of names that the All-Seeing Author has gone by in the past include Calypso, the Bastard Random Omnipotent Being, and Jerry.
  • Evan's list of concerns in chapter 1.
  Narration: I never got headaches unless I was sick, my bed was certainly not grassy, and my mom always kept the house at a maximum 67 degrees!
  • The list of things wanted for that Usopp puts into Evan's fake bounty poster includes beating up two Marine captains, saving Luffy at Roger's execution stand (despite not actually having done so), and obnoxious singing.
  • Ideas suggested by Evan for how Donkey Kong can use his Blast-Blast Fruit include blasting himself high into the air to get over walls, make even more explosive cannonballs, and have a really dangerous game of hot potato.
• Ascended Extra: The All-Seeing Author informs Evan through email that Fonti, the Fishman he fights, is actually an unnamed canon character. In canon, he is one of the fishmen taken out early when Luffy used Gum-Gum Pinwheel.
• Ascended Fanboy: Evan. He's an avid One Piece fan who wrote Fan Fiction before being tossed into the world of One Piece himself.
• Background Music: Despite Evan's iPod not being able to connect to the Internet, which is non-existent in the world of One Piece, the All-Seeing Author seems to be able to play appropriate music through it just fine.
  • During two chase scenes, once in Chapter 8 and again in Chapter 9, he runs the Benny Hill theme song.
• Back Story:
  • Evan and King Kong talk about the latter's back story over lunch in Loguetown.
  • Nojiko's is tweaked a little bit to include her training for much of her life with Genzo, in order to take down Arlong.
  • In Chapter 11, Evan reveals his to the rest of the Straw Hats.
  • Nojiko reveals more of her own backstory to Evan and King Kong, informing them of how before pirates attacked her hometown and killed her parents, her parents used to be botanists and had plants from all over the world. Apparently, she used to want to be a botanist herself, but her dream got shoved to the sidelines once her weapons training started.
  • Even Miss Goldenweek and Mr. 3 get a backstory telling how they came to be working together.
• Badass Boast: Why can Donkey Kong speak perfect English despite being a mere gorilla (at least, according to him)? BECAUSE HE'S A BADASS!
• Bait-and-Switch:
  • In chapter 9, when Evan is challenging Smoker just before realizing Chemistry Can Do Anything.
  Evan: (nervously) Ah, um, you see... That's my captain there, and um... y-you better let him go or... I'll fight you and one of us is going to get seriously hurt!
  Smoker: (glaring) Who exactly is going to get hurt if we fight?
  Evan: (gulping) ...Me.
  • While Nojiko's actions to get Evan to tell them how he got to the Conomi Islands in chapter 10 appear reassuring, what she says is not so much.
  Nojiko: Get it the fuck off your chest and tell us your shit already.
• Battle Rapping: One omake written in collaboration with Vikingr features an Epic Rap Battles of History — style rap battle between Evan and Jones, the main character of Vikingr's Self-Insert. Even Cross from This Bites! makes a guest appearance in the battle, literally dropping in at the end to fight both of them with Soundbite.
• Batman Gambit: While running from Arlong in Chapter 6, Evan picks which way to go on the staircase by considering how Arlong would reason out the situation, and does the opposite of what Arlong would.
• Bad People Abuse Animals: Luffy doesn't take to Mr. 9 and Miss Wednesday very well, calling them jerks because they tried to kill Laboon for food.
• Befriending the Enemy: In recent chapters, Evan has made friends with Goldenweek, to the point where she helps him out when he's captured and chained up on 3's ship.
• Beyond the Impossible: Doctor Nako says that Luffy's full healing from his fight with Arlong, as a result of mere sleep and eating meat, is against all logic.
• Big "NO!": Despite Evan's attempts to save Luffy on the execution platform in Chapter 8, he doesn't leave himself with enough time, and this follows.
• Big Secret:
  • When Zoro realizes that Evan cannot have crossed from the Grand Line to the East Blue, he corners Evan into telling what really happened.
  • In Chapter 11, the secret is blown.
• Big "WHAT?!":
  • The Straw Hats, collectively, after Luffy declares that Evan is free to change canon as he desires.
  • Everyone's reactions when they realize that the ear-shattering sound over Reverse Mountain is really a giant whale calling.
• Blown Across the Room: Averted. During Nojiko's chapter 9 battle, she uses a mini machine gun, but it doesn't make her opponents go flying back; they only fall over, unconscious.
• Body Horror: Chapter 21 has Evan getting blinded by a Rankyaku to the eyes. It's so bad that it makes King's vision momentarily go white with rage, and for the other Straw Hats, who have just arrived in Nanohana and are nowhere near the event, to suddenly feel absolute anger.
• Breaking the Fourth Wall: In chapter 17, Evan complains that getting two nutshots in as many chapters isn't fair.
• Brick Joke:
  • In the disclaimer of the FFN posting of Chapter 6, Word of God states that he may sue Oda on account of him "indirectly stealing the rights to my story." In the disclaimer of chapter 9, Word of God states that lawsuit didn't end well.
  • In Loguetown, Evan asks Tashigi whether she's ever had amnesia. This is a callback to the 100th Follower Special, Evan's Bucket List. One of the items on the list is to discover whether Tashigi is actually Kuina.
  • In Chapter 11, after Evan unintentionally breaks his iPod, the All-Seeing Author supplies him with a Nokia smartphone. This is also due to Evan's Bucket List; one of the items was to ask the All-Seeing Author for one, so that he could test its strength against Whitebeard.
• Butterfly of Doom: Evan fighting with Marine Captain Nezumi has the unanticipated and unwanted affect of the Marines unfairly placing a bounty on Nojiko's head.
• Calling Your Attacks: It's One Piece. This is an obvious necessity.
  • Evan seems to enjoy pulling both names of attacks and attack ideas from video games. In one case, he forms enormous hands made of water, which he dubs Master Hand and Crazy Hand - - obvious references to Master Hand and Crazy Hand from the Super Smash Bros. series. One move performed with Master Hand even references the games.
  • Several of Fonti's Fishman Karate techniques are named attacks, with one even being a variation of an attack which Jinbei uses in canon.
  • Nojiko bases many of her attack names off of war tactics.
• Call It Karma: Evan believes the crew's Gender Bending in the Divine Retribution omake to be divine retribution for writing the Girl!Cross omakes in This Bites!.
• The Cameo:
  • Nigel from Rio 2 makes an appearance as the captain of the Party Pooper Pirates, an all-bird crew that used to be rivals with King Kong's old crew.
  • Donkey Kong appears in Little Garden after Mr. 3 and Miss Goldenweek steal his bananas (unaware that they're his).
  • A Patron earned a cameo in chapter 19, as the character Shefah.
• Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Mr. 3 has to keep Evan alive while he has him captured, due to Evan's knowledge of the future possibly being able to ensure a victory for Baroque Works.
• Captured on Purpose: Evan, Nojiko, and King Kong's Whiskey Peak plan involved Evan becoming this to gather proof of what the villagers are. However, he didn't expect them to have seastone handcuffs.
• Cartoon Physics: After the whirlpool in chapter 12 shifts itself directly underneath the Straw Hats, they comically hang in midair for a few seconds like in a cartoon.
• Chemistry Can Do Anything: Evan manages to somehow create a material similar to seastone by forcing water molecules to combine with the molecules of his nunchakus.
• Combination Attack: Usopp and Zoro's Sure-Kill Tatsumaki Deflagration Star.
• Comically Missing the Point:
  • In chapter 1, Evan at first doesn't realize that he's actually ended up in One Piece. It's not until he sees the Devil Fruit that falls in front of him that he understands the situation.
  • Averted with Luffy's reasoning for being okay with waiting around in chapter 5. After answering several questions with a flat "Yep," to which Evan assumes this of him, Luffy explains his actions (or lack thereof, as it may be).
  • Luffy doesn't understand the concept behind the Captain Obvious joke at all.
  Evan: (weakly) Thanks for that, Captain Obvious.
  Luffy: (frowning) My name's not Obvious...
  • How does Luffy plan to go about things in the probably heavily guarded Rain Dinners Casino, when they don't know what Crocodile's power is?
  Luffy: Kick Crocodile's ass and save Evan!
• Curb-Stomp Battle: As recounted by Nojiko in chapter 25, Luffy one-shotted Wapol because he was still angry about Evan being captured.
• Cutaway Gag: Evan deadpans in Chapter 11 that flowers can't be sentient or talk. Cut to Omatsuri Island, where a certain flower is sneezing.
• Cryptic Conversation:
  • When Evan is speaking with Dragon in chapter 9, he is intentionally cryptic due to not wanting Luffy nor Smoker to realize he knows more than he should. He also acknowledges that all oracles are supposed to be vague and mysterious regardless.
  • The All-Seeing Author is annoyed with Bathory due to its conversing in a cryptic manner.
• Cymbal-Banging Monkey: There is apparently a literal one of these in the DK Crew, as revealed by a Sneeze Cut joke in Chapter 20.

Tropes D - G

• Die Laughing: Barely averted by Donkey Kong after he blows up Miss Goldenweek's Laughter Yellow paint that hit Evan and King Kong, who were quickly losing air due to laughter.
• Didn't See That Coming: Evan plays a recording of the Frontier Agents in Whiskey Peak in front of about fifty people, including Luffy, in order to prove they're a part of Baroque Works and not normal villagers. He had no idea that this same recording also had Vivi telling Crocodile's name by accident.
• Digging Yourself Deeper: Mr. 9 doesn't seem to understand that the Straw Hats really don't like how uncaring he is about Laboon's life. Miss Wednesday has to quote this trope to shut him up.
• Disability Super Power: Evan gains one in the form of getting blinded by Stussy but gaining the ability to sense all water around him. This also means he can concentrate on the water in the air, bring it together, and make it into liquid water.
• Distinctive Appearances: Evan always wears a leather jacket.
• Domesticated Dinosaurs: Evan manages to rope a Tyrannosaurus Rex into being his, Nojiko's, and King Kong's steed on Little Garden.
• Double Take:
  • After King Kong mentions that it once literally rained cats and dogs on his old crew, this is Evan's reaction.
  Evan: (beat) Wait, what the hell...?
• Drama-Preserving Handicap: The effects of Vivi's sleep-inducing hypnosis reduce Zoro's strength and reaction while he's fighting the three Frontier Agents in Chapter 14, making it tough for him to fight all three at once. When it's over, he's easily able to take out Miss Monday.
• Dude, Not Funny!: Nojiko and Nami are not amused by Donkey Kong calling lemurs pussies, on the grounds that it's not OK to give female genitalia the connotation of weakness.
• Dude, Where's My Respect?: The All-Seeing Author gets triggered when Evan tosses his iPod, which is the main method of communication between the two, into the mud in Chapter 6, claiming it was rude.
• Dung Fu:
  • When Luffy escapes a pissed but exhausted Evan in chapter 9, King Kong throws the captain's comeuppance in his face in the form of King's own dung.
  • King Kong again invokes this trope to both Luffy and Evan in chapter 11, after the latter two laugh at the Straw Hats' reactions to Crocus.
• Emotional Powers: Word of God states that Luffy's Fist of Hate is able to hit Crocodile because Luffy hated Crocodile more and more until he was able to punch him.
• Eternal English: Despite coming from an entirely different world than the Blue Sea denizens, both Evan's and the Blue Sea's languages are exactly the same English.
• "Eureka!" Moment:
  • Nami when she realizes just why Luffy always steals everyone's food.
  • After Luffy displays his full trust in Nami during chapter 5, Evan has one of these about why the Straw Hats unequivocally follow Luffy.
• Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Mr. 3 and Miss Goldenweek have a father-daughter relationship despite not being related, and Mr. 3 is the only one she feels comfortable trusting. When she learns that Evan feels similar about the Straw Hats in this world, she realizes how their situations parallel and releases him from her colors trap because of this.
• Everythings Better With Monkeys: Evan partners up with a monkey he names King Kong in chapter 8.
• Everyone Has Standards: While Evan is fine with controlling the water in his own body to force himself to move, pulling the same thing on other people "feels too 'Evil Dictator'" for his tastes.
• Eye Scream: Evan receives a Rankyaku to the eyes in chapter 21.
• Face Palm: This is the world of One Piece, with the author's own brand of insanity mixed in. These are aplenty.
• "Facing the Bullets" One-Liner: Just before Evan is about to be hit by Stussy's Rankyaku, the following exchange occurs.
  : Stussy: "I see. But you won't."
  : Evan: "Of course I fucking will, you bitch. See you in Hell, that is."
• Fighting With Chucks: Evan buys a pair of nunchakus to use in battle so he doesn't always have to rely on his Devil Fruit powers.
• Flat "What": King Kong signs this after Evan's Free Willy joke in Chapter 11.
• Flipping the Bird: The ocean, of all things, does this to Evan in Chapter 13.
• For Want Of A Nail: It's just getting started, but ripples are already very clearly being shown, and Word of God states that they're only going to start escalating quickly from here on out.
  • Because the Straw Hats minus Nami were walking to Arlong Park and talking with Evan, they ended up farther down the road by the time Nojiko reaches them. Because they were farther down the road by the time Nojiko reaches them, on their walk, Evan and Luffy end up seeing Nezumi force Genzo to take them to Nami's house. Because they see this, Evan is able to convince Luffy to fight the Division. Because Evan beats up Nezumi, he declares he'll get his revenge on Evan's captain. Because Nezumi is an evil, whining idiot, he gets the Marine Headquarters to place a bounty on Nojiko's head. Because of this, Nojiko joins the crew.
  • Because Zoro's fight with Hatchan took a little longer than in canon, and Evan freed Luffy from the water, Hatchan was defeated on land. Because of this, he was captured with the rest of the Arlong Pirates. Because Fullbody was in the area, and Loguetown was the closest Marine base to the Conomi Islands, Hatchan and the rest were taken to Loguetown. Because Fullbody decided to inform Smoker that he had arrived himself, he bumped into Evan and got into a fight, which ended with him getting knocked out until around the storm starting. Because of this, a lightning bolt was able to strike the Marine warship and free both Hatchan and Fonti.
  • Because Evan defeated Nezumi, news of the defeat pissed Arlong off. Because he was pissed off, he sent one of his subordinates, a fishman named Fonti, to attack the crew when they arrived at Arlong Park. Because Evan proved to be immune to the water effects of Fishman Karate, he ended up fighting Fonti.
• Freakier Than Fiction: Evan claims that seeing a Logia Devil Fruit user's transformation (specifically, Smoker's) is this in chapter 9.
• Gatling Good: Part of Nojiko's repertoire in chapter 9 is a mini-machine gun that she uses very effectively.
• Gender Bender: The first omake of the story centers around the All-Seeing Author pranking the whole crew by changing their genders for a week, or until they kiss their one true love. (Apparently, Luffy's is meat.)
• Genre Savvy:
  • Evan has read all of the manga up to some chapters into the Whole Cake Island Arc.
  • Evan states in Chapter 19 that he's watched and read too many stories to be fooled by a proclamation like "If you tell me X, I'll let you go."
• Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Nojiko has to be slapped back to reality by Nami when she's so worried about Evan being captured by Mr. 3 that she blames everything on herself.
• Giving Someone the Pointer Finger: When Evan is wrapping up his analysis of Robin's motives, he pulls a Phoenix Wright and points directly at her.
• Glass Cannon: As a normal human from Earth in a World of Badass, Evan is naturally weaker and easier to beat up than everyone else in the series. He does, however, have a Devil Fruit.
• Going Cold Turkey: King Kong claims that the literal poop rain in chapter 12 is enough to put him off Dung Fu forever. Unless he gets a few seconds alone with Crocodile.
• Groin Attack: Evan accidentally administers one to himself while helping Nojiko train in Observation Haki.

Tropes H - N

• Hammerspace: Just where did King put that map in Chapter 23, anyway?
• Head Desk:
  • Chapter 4 has Evan wondering where he can find a desk to do this with.
  • The April Fools' Day omake concludes with Evan finally being unable to take the insanity any longer and slamming his head into the wall.
  • Nami's so done with the Straw Hats' zaniness by Chapter 17 that she drops silently to the ground and starts slamming her forehead against it repeatedly.
• Hearing Voices: Mr. 3 seems to have been listening to some mysterious, female voice on Little Garden that has been convincing him to do things.
• Heavy Sleeper: Evan and King Kong sleep through Nami relentlessly bitch-slapping both of them to try and wake them up. It takes her shouting in Evan's ear that they'll be in debt to finally get them up.
• Hell-Bent for Leather: Evan is commonly seen sporting a leather jacket.
• Heroic BSoD: Evan has one at the beginning of chapter 7, after learning that his actions caused Nezumi to get revenge by placing a bounty on Nojiko's head. He gets over it by realizing that his presence in the plotline would ensure changes to be made regardless, and that he can only try to force them to be for the better.
• How Do I Shot Web?: There are two scenes dedicated to testing out Evan's powers, one taking up a large part of the chapter.
• Hunk: Male!Nojiko is apparently this.
  Narration: I'm not kidding you: It was like looking at a cross between Isaiah Mustafa and Prince William.
• Hypno Trinket: Vivi's swirly dress is this, as it actually succeeds in putting Evan, Nojiko, and King Kong out of commission.
• I Ain't Got Time to Bleed: Adrenaline overpowers the pain of Evan's dislocated shoulder during his fight with Fullbody in chapter 8, and it's only after it he realizes that the fight overtaxed it.
• I Do Not Own: The author always finds a way to use a new version of this disclaimer in the author's note to iterate the fact that he's not the owner of the canon show.
• Impact Silhouette: When Barbarossa jumps off the crow's nest of his ship after King, his weight carries him through two floors of its deck. Cue this trope.
• Impossibly Delicious Food: Sanji's bluefin elephant tuna dinner definitely qualifies as this.
• Inciting Incident: The moment that the All-Seeing Author contacts Evan and the latter accepts the former's proposal.
• Incoming Ham: Donkey Kong's entrance involves him chanting the DK Rap.
  Donkey Kong: DK... Donkey Kong... DK... Donkey Kong is HERE!
• In Spite of a Nail: Despite the Little Garden arc changing enough that Nami and others didn't have to get burned in the fire, therefore stopping the Kestia from biting shirtless Nami in the stomach, the bug still got her in the arm due to her having worn short sleeves.
• I Need a Freaking Drink: The All-Seeing Author's method for breaking his April Fools' Day prank early and Luffy's True Love turning out to be meat result in Evan deciding this.
• In Mysterious Ways: Due to having been ripped out of another world (our world), Evan has knowledge of One Piece's future and subtly uses this to change events... Although he does not always mean for said changes to happen. Word of God states that Evan is aware of canon events up to Chapter 842.
• Instant Death Bullet: Nojiko's mini machine gun as seen in chapter 9, although it delivers unconsciousness instead of a healthy dosing of the Grim Reaper.
• I Shall Taunt You: Evan decides to make it his mission to annoy Mr. 3 as much as possible when he's captured on 3's ship, as he has nothing else to do.
• It's Personal: The Strawhats decided to help Vivi defeat Crocodile because they thought she was nice. Then Mr. 3 had the truly brilliant idea to kidnap Evan and bring him to his boss. There is going to be blood.
• iProduct: For the first ten chapters, Evan carries his old iPod with him, until he smashes it in a sudden fit of annoyed anger due to the All-Seeing Author breaking the moment.
• Jaw Drop: After Vivi's accidental misspeak in Chapter 14, over fifty people, including all Straw Hats present, do this.
• Jerkass God: Two of them, actually.
  • The All-Seeing Author. He's a random omnipotent being who's a bit of a troll.
    • He initially introduces himself to Evan in the appearance of a fan of his previous works. However, upon Evan accepting his offer for a new story idea, the A.S.A. turns around and drops him into the Arlong Park Arc.
    • He often sends Evan snarky emails with the effect of aggravating him... although, to be fair, sometimes they include valuable information.
    All-Seeing Author: Try laughing harder. I think there are still some undisturbed children on the side of the road.
    • He even lampshades being this trope himself.
    All-Seeing Author: Duh. What do you think I am, a jackass Jerkass God? Pfft, please. The pay's decent, but not THAT good.
  • Bathory, the All-Seeing Author's seemingly evil counterpart.
    • Bathory seems to be plotting something to take over the world.
• Kemonomimi: Just for added insanity, the All-Seeing Author turns King Kong into a monkeygirl in the Divine Retribution omake.
• Knockout Gas: The stink given off by the prehistoric valerian makes anyone who smells it almost instantly fall asleep.
• Leave Him to Me!:
  • If the Straw Hats ever run across Nezumi again, Nojiko wants this due to Nezumi having convinced the Marines to place a bounty on her head.
  • Evan requests that Sanji leave Fullbody to him in chapter 8, despite the chef being able to take him out very easily.
• Let's Split Up, Gang!: To thin out the Little Garden villains, Evan, King Kong, and Donkey Kong run one way while Usopp, Vivi, and Carue go another, and while Luffy stays in the clearing.
• Like Reality, Unless Noted: In Chapter 11, an island called Ohio appears. It can only be assumed to be the same as Real Life Ohio... with the "small" addition of Trump running it.
• Look Behind You: Evan tries this in order to use a wave to wash Mr. 3 overboard when he tries to commandeer 3's ship that he's been captured on. Although he succeeds in getting the whole crew to turn around, he fails his overall goal.
• Made of Iron: The dinosaur that Evan manages to befriend in Chapter 17 is covered in scales that are quite literally made of iron. They were even able to deflect the bullets from Nojiko's mini machine gun, as well as take a powerful scythe attack without gaining so much as a scratch.
• Made of Plasticine: Evan, who is a normal Earth human in a World of Badass... and who has been avoiding his training besides.
  • He gets so badly beat up by Fonti that he has to control the water in his body in order to move and win the fight.
  • Even Fullbody's punches send him flying back several feet.
• Making a Splash: The Devil Fruit that Evan consumes gives him hydrokinesis, the power to control water. All Devil Fruit weaknesses still apply, however.
• Mass "Oh, Crap!": A silent one occurs with all of the still-conscious Baroque Works agents and the present Straw Hats when Vivi accidentally lets slip Crocodile's real name on voice recording.
• Mega Maelstrom: A gigantic whirlpool opens up in front of the Straw Hats in chapter 12, even going so far as to shift itself so that it goes directly underneath them.
• More Dakka:
  • When the going gets rough, the amount of Nojiko's weapons that she carries with her increases proportionately.
  • In Chapter 9, when the Marines try to corner her, Nojiko opens fire upon them with a mini machine gun. Granted, it only holds eight bullets, but it still fits.
  • Evan proposes (jokingly) that they can use this to blast through the Red Line.
• Multi-Melee Master:
  • Nojiko commonly uses a variety of weapons in battle. For example, she showed sufficient skill in a scythe, a mini machine gun, and sai in one battle, and she also was carrying knives; she didn't end up using those, however.
• Mundane Solution: Zoro tries to hold off Luffy by fighting him, only for Evan to later get his captain to stop being an idiot simply by saying that he's got meat for Luffy.
• Musicalis Interruptus: Caesar is not putting up with any singing on the Grande Galdino.
  Evan: (thinking aloud) "Hello, darkness, my old friend..."
  Caesar: "AND NO SINGING!"
• Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Stussy is Miss Mother's Day. Even worse, Evan doesn't know who she is because he hasn't read gotten the chance to read that far in the manga.
• Nature Is Not Nice:
  • Evan's reasoning for why the Straw Hat's can't sail south into the Grand Line.
  • Basically the whole of chapter 12, save for some of the end, is an example of this.
  Evan: Because Mother Nature is a bitch?
• Never My Fault: Fullbody reasons that Evan is the cause he failed to complete his mission in chapter 8, despite Fullbody being the one to pick a fight with Evan, who only bumped into him accidentally.
• Nobody Poops: Mostly held, except for a scene in chapter 9 where King uses Dung Fu against Luffy. Thankfully, Law of Conservation of Detail excludes the actual pooping from the limelight.
• "No. Just… No" Reaction: Evan upon witnessing the new "swordplay style" that King Kong picks up from a member of the Party Pooper Pirates. (It's really just the Juju on that Beat dance.)
• Noodle Incident:
  • We only get a glimpse of the Straw Hats' first stop in the Grand Line, but even that's enough to full understand why, when they return to the Twin Capes to follow the canon path, they refuse to tell Crocus about it.
  • Little Garden.
  • King requests that Evan not remind him of the DK Crew's Minesweeper Incident.
• No-Sell: While Fonti's physical strength is enough to send Evan flying back, Evan completely shrugs off his Fishman Karate, reducing the attack to no more than a normal punch. This is due to his Tempest-Tempest Fruit protecting him from all water-based attacks.
• "Not Making This Up" Disclaimer: Evan's face as he's telling the Straw Hats his secret clearly conveys this.
• Not So Different: Miss Goldenweek's opinion of Evan changes upon hearing that he's doing all he does for his friends. This is the main reason that she frees him from her Colors Trap and keeps everything he told her, including the truth of his origins, a secret.
• The One Job: Nami screams angrily at Vivi that she'd failed her only task on the crew after the princess forgets that she still had her Eternal Pose to Alabasta.
  Nami: DAMN IT, PRINCESS, YOU HAD ONE JOB!

• Oh, Crap!: Quite a few, and probably more to come.
  • In chapter 1, Evan nearly pulls off Tempting Fate before having one of these moments.
  • Again in chapter 1, when Evan wakes up in the middle of unfamiliar territory.
  • In chapter 5, Fonti doesn't say it, but he clearly has one upon noticing Evan's not down for the count.
  Narration: Fonti began to turn to look over his left shoulder, and, noticing the giant hand at last, panic flashed in his eyes.
  • In chapter 6, after Arlong gets pissed off at seeing Evan again (having realized his presence means he beat Fonti).
  • A truly terrified one occurs when Evan realizes he accidentally punched Nami by reflex upon waking up from a hypnosis-induced slumber... and that she is pissed.
  • Nojiko when she smells the terrible stench of the ancient valerian.
  • When Evan realizes that the person who said "Laughter Yellow" was neither Donkey Kong nor King Kong.

• "Open!" Says Me: Done twice in Chapter 25, both times by Luffy. Rain Dinners is gonna have to invest in new doors after this...
• Personal Raincloud: Nami and Usopp are so depressed about going to an island of dinosaurs that Evan is surprised one of these isn't hanging over the heads of each.
• Power at a Price: In Chapter 22, Evan gains the ability to sense all water in the general vicinity around him, including that in the air. However, he had to lose his vision as a result of Stussy's Rankyaku for him to get it.
• The Power of Hate: Luffy's new Fist of Hate attack which he lands against Crocodile in Chapter 25.
• The Protagonist: Evan Johnson, an 18-year-old who accidentally made a deal with a Jerkass God that sent him into the world of One Piece. He's got brown hair, brown eyes, and always wears a leather jacket.
• Pun:
  • Chapter 8 has the All-Seeing Author making electricity puns which are Actually Pretty Funny.
  • Chapter 9 has Evan making one about nails and screws, which only Luffy finds funny.
  Evan: And if that happens, then I hope someone has a nail, because we're screwed.
• Punctuated! For! Emphasis!:
  • In Chapter 11, Donald Trump has a short scene where he does this.
    Trump: (shouting) And we will MAKE! OHIO! GREAT AGAIN!
  • Before throwing some Dung Fu, King Kong also uses it in Chapter 11... through sign language.

  • Chapter 20 does this to emphasize Sengoku's hate of Talk Like a Pirate Day, then his sudden love of it.

  • In Chapter 25, Luffy's narration is punctuated to show how much Luffy refuses to let anyone touch his crew.
• Rage Breaking Point: When weird thing after weird thing keeps popping out of the jungle in Little Garden and cutting Nami off, she tries to hold in her anger/annoyance... Until Donkey Kong literally explodes out, at which point Nami finally loses her patience.
• Rage Quit: The Straw Hats flat-out refuse to deviate from canon any further after their first island on the deviated path is Ohio Island... run by Donald Trump.
• Rain of Something Unusual:
  • According to King Kong, one day in the Grand Line, it started raining cats and dogs - - literally - - on his old crew and him.
  • The first strange weather patterns that the Straw Hats encounter upon entering the Grand Line is a storm of poop.
• A Rare Sentence:
  • Sanji openly admits in Chapter 12 that the piece of iceberg being thrown on them is entirely Nami's fault.
  • In the Divine Retribution omake, King Kong says that he'd never thought he'd say the day when Evan would declare he (or, as is the case in the omake, she) needs a drink.
  • In Chapter 18, Sanji demands to know why the hell a crew of pirate birds led by Nigel the Evil Cockatoo are attacking, then demands to know why the hell he just had to say that in complete seriousness.
  • In Chapter 21: "Okay, who stole the video game monkey's bananas? Who the hell made me say 'who stole the video game monkey's bananas'?"
  • The same chapter has:
    "Holy shit, that terrified me out of my pants, but it's flipping AWESOME!" I yelped as Donkey Kong drop-kicked the weightless girl while swinging on a prehistoric vine past me and my monkey partner.
    ...Now there was another sentence I'd never thought I'd say in my life.
  • One happens in chapter 22 after Evan and King escape from Stussy.
    A blind man and a monkey with wings jumped off of a desert boat, chased by an angry blonde criminal with superhuman martial arts.
• Realistic Diction Is Unrealistic:
  • Averted. Characters sometimes accidentally say the wrong word, or words that don't exist. Stuttering is also sometimes utilized.
• Reality Warper: The All-Seeing Author. He's an immortal being who is capable of tearing people out of their own universes and into others, as well as giving iPods unlimited battery (but not unlimited Internet).
• Roaring Rampage of Revenge: When the Strawhats see what Miss Mother's Day did to Evan, they decide to make their displeasure known to Crocodile. Very strongly.
• Rule of Funny:
  • Why is it believable for Donald Trump to be ruling an island called Ohio that exists in the Grand Line? Because it's utterly hilarious, that's why!
  • Mother Nature sending the crew a literal living iceberg in chapter 12 is only plausible due to this as well.
• Running Gag:
  • Crocus identifies his continual staring at the Straw Hats and then simple answers as this.
  • Usopp wearily wonders whether Vivi forgetting things is going to be a running gag, only for Carue to confirm it weakly.
• Sai Guy: Part of Nojiko's repertoire in chapter 9 is a pair of sai that she wields while dashing quickly through the Marines' ranks.
• Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Vivi accidentally revealing that Mr. 0 is Crocodile on recording and Luffy's response to it is finally too much for Nami. Averted in that she doesn't actually skedaddle, because as in canon, Mr. 13 and Miss Wednesday's drawings stop her in her tracks.
• Secret-Keeper: Miss Goldenweek manages to get Evan to reveal his secret thanks to her hypnotic powers. Upon hearing his reasons for what he does and realizing that the two of them are in rather similar situations, she becomes one of these.
• Seinfeldian Conversation: Nojiko reveals in some dialogue from her point of view that Evan and her often have these kinds of conversations off-screen.
• Self-Insert: The story involves the author inserting himself into One Piece's plotline to see just how much of it could be screwed over. It is also noted that Word of God states Evan's last name was tweaked to avoid needless Internet searches.
• Share the Male Pain:
  • All the male Straw Hats visibly wince when Evan accidentally delivers a Groin Attack to himself in Chapter 16, Usopp even whimpering.
  • Accidentally administering a nutshot to Evan is enough to make even a Tyrannosaurus Rex become friendly as an apology.
• Shock and Awe: One of the DK Crew members is a woolly monkey named Sun Wukong who has the Charge-Charge Fruit, which enables him to amplify electricity and manually direct its flow through his body. He cannot, however, create electricity himself.
• Shout-Out: Several can be found. They're done with various degrees of subtly, but all are enjoyable to discover, and cleverly pulled off.
  • Narration for the All-Seeing Author in chapter 1 states that past names he has used include Bitchingly Ridiculous Obnoxious Bitch. This is in reference to a fellow Self-Insert Fan Fiction, This Bites!.
  • Evan's names for the hands made of water that he first uses in Chapter 5 are named Master Hand and Crazy Hand, in reference to Master Hand and Crazy Hand from Super Smash Bros.
  • What does Evan name an attack where he uses whips made of water? "Tempest-Tempest Indiana Jones."
  • Chapter 8 gives Mob Psycho 100 as Evan's inspiration for the Tempest-Tempest Indiana Jones move.
  • In Chapter 9, a literal shout-out is given to the author's editor, EXNativo, and the man's own Self-Insert.
  • Another shout-out to This Bites! appears in Chapter 11 while Evan is talking about fanfictions.
• Signature Laugh: This is One Piece, after all, so there were bound to be some eventually.
  • Evan's is "Veehihihi!"
  • King's is "Macacaca!" which is ironic, because monkey in Portuguese is macaco.
• Sinister Scythe: Nojiko's opening attack against the Marines in chapter 9 involves jumping off the ship while wielding a red scythe.
• Slasher Smile: Evan and King Kong both share one when regarding Stussy, after Evan stops her in her tracks.
• Sneeze Cut:
  • After Evan's flat statement that flowers can't be sentient or talk, this occurs with a certain demonic flower on Omatsuri Island.
  • After Sengoku relates the hangover from drinking booze to monkeys clashing cymbals together in your head, it cuts to a member of the DK Crew sneezing.
• Sound-Effect Bleep: Happens to Nami and Nojiko when they're raging at Zoro and Sanji, providing opportunity for Evan to slide in with a cheeky joke.
  Nami and Nojiko: (pissed) ENOUGH! NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO BE A CONTEST MEASURING DI—!
  Random dinosaur from the jungle: ROAR!
  Evan: (grinning cheekily) Dinosaurs!
• Spit Take: Performed by Luffy, Usopp, and Chopper upon spotting Smoker and Tashigi in the Rainbase bar, just like in canon.
• Stop Hitting Yourself: Any form of media where Nigel makes an appearance would be incomplete without a scene of him making somebody hit themselves, and Chapter 15 delivers.
• Story-Breaker Power: Evan's Tempest-Tempest Fruit gives him control over water. One Piece is an ocean world. Do the math.
• The Strategist: Nojiko, as decided by Luffy in chapter 11.
• Super-Empowering: Due to monkeys being naturally weaker than the human race, every single member of the DK Crew except for their fishwoman doctor has eaten a Devil Fruit.
• Suspiciously Specific Denial: Used several times throughout the story.
  • In chapter 6, when Arlong is towering over Evan.
  Narrator: I definitely did not squeal in fright.
  • In chapter 9, while Smoker is talking to Evan.
  Narrator: He narrowed his eyes, a lion sizing up his prey, and I definitely did not squeak like a mouse.

Tropes T - Z

• Taking It Well: Somehow, the Straw Hats don't quite freak out about Evan's secret as much as he anticipated.
• Talking Animal: Lampshaded in King Kong, who is a monkey who ate the Mime-Mime Devil Fruit and uses sign language. It's not really talking, but close enough. Later played straight with King's ex-captain, Donkey Kong.
• Tampering with Food and Drink: Evan does this to the already half-tampered with buffet laid out for them by the Whiskey Peak villagers, in order to force them to thin out their numbers.
• Tempting Apple: The Devil Fruit that Evan eats in chapter 1 is an apple. This makes it fall under this category, due to granting him incredible power while taking away his ability to swim.
• Tempting Fate:
  • Even though Evan cut himself off before quoting "At least it can't get any worse," in chapter 1, he still received a PM from the All-Seeing Author, which resulted in him being thrown into One Piece.
  • Luffy wonders how bad their first island could be if they deviate from canon. It's an island run by Donald Trump, who instead of blaming Mexicans and immigrants for the island's problems, blames pirates.
  • Nami unintentionally does this several times in chapter 12, one of which results in a literal living iceberg appearing in the path of their ship.
  • Mr. 3 does this in chapter 16, claiming that there's no way stealing the bananas stacked in a pile in a cave will bring him and Miss Goldenweek harm. Too bad for him, none other than Donkey Kong appears to be the owner of said bananas.
• That's What She Said:
  • Quoted word-for-word by Evan in chapter 4, much to Luffy's confusion.
    Luffy: I've seen bigger.
    Evan: That's what she said.
    Luffy: ...Who said that?
  • Again quoted by Evan in chapter 11, though Zoro isn't too impressed.
    Zoro: How big do you think it is, anyway?
    Evan: That's what she said.
• Tsundere: Zoro flatly says that Nojiko is this in Chapter 24. A furious Nojiko vehemently denies it.
• The Reveal: Evan informs his crewmates of his true origins in Chapter 10.
• The World Is Just Awesome:
  • Evan and the Straw Hats are all breath-taken by the view they are granted after hitting the top of Reverse Mountain.
  • Nojiko thinks the idea of a prehistoric jungle is utterly amazing.
• This Page Will Self-Destruct:
  • Word of God claims in the disclaimer of chapter 10 that he attempted to steal the copyright to the canon series, but discovered that it was a copy which burst into flames as he retreated.
• Tonka Tough:
  • The All-Seeing Author drops a Nokia smartphone on Evan's head to replace his iPod, which he accidentally smashed against Reverse Mountain in annoyance. Evan describes it as this to the curious Straw Hats.
  • Evan's Bucket List states that he want to test whether a Nokia phone or Whitebeard is harder.
• Trapped in TV Land: Evan is thrown into the world of an anime by a Jerkass God with no way to get out until they reach the end of the journey.
• True Companions: The Strawhats, of course. If you're stupid enough to kidnap or harm one of them, you can put your head between your knees and kiss your sorry ass goodbye.
• True Love's Kiss: The All-Seeing Author declares this to be the only way to break his crew-wide Gender Bender prank.
  • Unsurprisingly yet amusingly, Luffy's true love appears to be meat.
• Unconventional Formatting:
  • Anytime the All-Seeing Author sends Evan a message on his iPod, it is read as a chatroom message, with the Jerkass God's name in bold and a colon after it, after which the message follows.
  • When the All-Seeing Author and Bathory appear in Chapter 10, their dialogue is all in bold.
  • Dialogue for animal languages is written in brackets instead of quotation marks.
• Unreliable Narrator: Evan worries he will become this in Chapter 22, now that he has no sight.
• Unsound Effect:
  • Robin's glares get so menacing that at one point, Japanese kanji floats in the air around her.
  • Nojiko's sai make the sound KA-SAI! when hitting Evan during their Observation Haki training.
• Vine Swing: King Kong is shown swinging on vines in Chapters 16, 17, and 18; understandable, since he's a monkey, and their location is a jungle.
• We Named the Monkey "Jack": One of the members of the DK Crew is named Jacqueline, short for Jack. She's even a capuchin, the same species as the Trope Namer.
• We Wait: After Nezumi's defeat, Luffy makes Evan wait in Cocoyashi Village with him for Nami to make her decision.
• Wham Episode:
  • Chapter 18 ends with Evan getting captured by Mr. 3 on Little Garden.
  • Chapter 20 ends with Stussy being revealed to be Miss Mother's Day and gaining control over Evan, then calling Marine HQ and telling them about Evan's future knowledge.
• Wham Line:
  • The final line of chapter 9, when the true name of the All-Seeing Author is revealed.
  Dragon: [angrily] Just what are you playing at this time, JOY BOY!?
  • Vivi's recorded response to Miss Monday on Evan's Nokia (although it was an accidental slip of the lips). It causes a Mass "Oh, Crap!", especially since Mr. 13 and Miss Friday are there.
• What Could Possibly Go Wrong?: Luffy responds with something similar when questioned about attempting to deviate from canon. It goes VERY badly.
  Luffy: Besides, how bad could it be?
  • Mr. 3 thinks nothing could possibly go wrong after he and Miss Goldenweek steal baskets of bananas from a cave in Little Garden, due to having double-checked for any signs of animals in the area or human life.
• What Did You Expect When You Named It ____?: Chapter 20 is very appropriately entitled "Shit Hits the Fan." Readers soon find out why.
• "World of Cardboard" Speech: When he and King are walking alone in the desert in the aftermath of the In Captivity Arc, Evan's recent injury causes him to break down and deliver a heartbreaking speech.
  Evan: "King. It's not your fault. If this happened because anyone’s weak, then that person is me. I’m… I’m the weakest member of this crew. Even with my powers… I can’t take a punch as well as Sanji or Zoro, or even Usopp. I can’t… c-can’t just take a stab to the chest and lose gallons of blood and then walk it off. I can’t heal up just by eating a lot of meat… I can’t even shoot a target a foot ahead of me."
  (beat)
  Evan: "It’s… as m-much as I hate to say it, it’s true, King. I’m fucking weak! Look at me! I’ve been trying to trick myself and everyone else by fighting guys like Nezumi and Fullbody, who are barely powerful enough to pass as legit, or Fonti, whose main abilities I was just able to no-sell with my Devil Fruit! But when it comes down to it, I’m just a fucking Glass Cannon! Sure, I have strong powers, but physically? I can’t even drag a crate of cannonballs up the gangplank of a ship without having several people help. No one needs to tell me that! I know… No one needs to tell me how weak I am! No one knows more than me! I BARELY DESERVE TO CALL MYSELF A PIRATE, MUCH LESS A STRAW HAT!"
• You Bastard!:
  • Mr. 3 is furious when he sees Evan has knocked out Miss Goldenweek, and screams this.
  • Luffy, Vivi, Smoker, and Tashigi hear Nojiko cry this in Chapter 25 as they're racing down the steps to Crocodile. They don't know why, though, until they reach the bottom.
• You Just Had to Say It: Zoro growls this out to Luffy after Luffy's What Could Possibly Go Wrong? moment leads to The Cameo featuring Trump.
• Your Other Left:
  • Until Chapter 11, Evan had no idea which side port and starboard corresponded to.
  • Hilariously, this is even an example of Truth in Television; Word of God accidentally mixed up the directions in the story itself and had to be corrected by a fan.
  • Apparently, Evan still didn't learn his lesson, as he made the mistake again in Chapter 19.
• You Wouldn't Believe Me If I Told You: Evan's initial claim when, in chapter 10, Zoro demands for him to tell them how he really ended up on the Conomi Islands.
• You Wouldn't Hit a Guy with Glasses: Evan pulls a well-played twist on this trope upon Smoker, using his blinding injury as the demotivator instead of a pair of shades.
• You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry!: Quoted in full by the All-Seeing Author to Bathory in Chapter 10.
