    Leonis Kingdom

Between the great kingdoms of Hourne and Wezette, this small kingdom is the birthplace of princes Mont and Sterne. Possessing a ring that has been passed down for generations with the ability to call forth a powerful army of visions, even the surrounding great powers acknowledge King Oelde's strength.

Tropes associated with them:

  • Animal Motifs: Lions, being the sigil of the Royal family and kingdom and with Oelde and Mont referred to as the Red Lion Monarch and the New King of Lions respectively.
  • David vs. Goliath: The David for most of the story, being a small nation nestled between larger powers. The early story involves Leonis standing alone against an alliance between Fennes and Hourne, each one already individually being larger than Leonis.
  • Red Is Heroic: Most named Leonis characters, particularly the royal family, tend to have red as their predominant color and it is also the color of their banner. However the regular Leonis soldiers instead have Green as their primary color.

King Oelde Leonis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oelde.png
Red Lion Monarch
"The Leonis line must live on, even should we fall afoul of gods to defend it."
Oelde's Badass Creed

A valiant warrior and king of Leonis, who with Queen Helena has two twin sons, Mont and Sterne. His priority is the continuation of the royal bloodline, at times disregarding his affection towards his sons and making dispassionate decisions to protect at least one of them.

Voiced by: Kazuhiro Yamaji (Japanese), Chris Tergliafera (English)

  • Abusive Parents: Raegen's neglect of Rain has nothing on this guy as the ex-Veritas at least cares deeply for his children and will go out of his way to protect them. Oelde Leonis? He's a horrible father to both Mont and Sterne, to say the very least.
  • Badass Creed: Check his quote above.
  • Bring It: Oelde's answer to Khury being willing to sell Leonis's heads to Muraga? Let Mont go rescue Machérie in Leonis Castle (in one of the very few times he actually doesn't belittle Mont for his idea), knowing Khury would not take that well, and gladly challenge Wezette's soldiers when Khury tries to stop Mont's team from leaving his castle.
  • Jerkass: Not once is he shown to be proud of Mont or Sterne and instead shows outright disgust at Mont’s kindness. He continuously berates Mont for any action taken while providing little to no help himself. His pride also puts Mont’s group in danger thanks to refusing to tend to a grievous wound, lying about it to get Mont to leave Wezette. He then does his own thing while wounded, taking the Leonis ring from Mont and giving it to the now-psychotic Sterne. Not only does this make things more difficult for Mont but pretty much shows that he WANTS his two sons to fight to the death.
  • Made of Iron: He gets wounded in battle against Fennes soldiers, spends a chunk of the story in very bad shape with no time to stop or heal, and still survives after the massive ordeal that is the trek to Wezette.
    • Deconstructed and subverted later, when Oelde secretly takes a part of his army to infiltrate Leonis while wounded, needlessly endangering himself with disastrous results and causing Mont to get distracted during a crucial siege on Leonis Castle.
  • Playing with Fire: Fire is his element.
  • Poor Communication Kills: He seems to have some plan in place when he leaves behind Sterne and Helena, which the latter seems to be in on (which is later confirmed by Helena herself), but he refuses to explain himself to either of his sons. Even when both Mont and Sterne confront him over Helena's reported death and Sadali's insinuation that Oelde knowingly sent her to her death, he refuses to explain himself.
  • Skewed Priorities: We're not really sure if leaving your younger son and wife to Fennes's profit would count as "preserving the Leonis line". If anything, it made Sterne all too willing to end it.
    • Played with, however, in that Helena is shown to actually be onboard with being left behind, as part of some plan they've made... but as the plan is still mostly unknown, it remains up in the air on just what their intentions are, save to ensure at least one of the sons survive, and whether their priorities are really in order.

Queen Helena Leonis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/helena.png
Benevolent Queen
"Perhaps it would be best to demonstrate the pride of Leonis?"

The queen of Leonis and mother of Mont and Sterne. She has full trust in King Oelde and is willing to give her own life for the sake of her country. It's not very well known that, before marrying into the royal family, she was actually a powerful black mage feared by enemy countries.

Voiced by: Atsuko Tanaka (Japanese), Alexa Rose (English)

  • Action Mom: Let us be honest, to be mother to twins and still be a badass, that's a feat. Case in point, she was a Red Baron in the battlefield before being Oelde's wife, and goes back to being one once she's taken for dead.
  • Blow You Away: Rolls with Wind magic in battle.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Despite being described as a powerful black mage in her profile her main job is actually Green Mage, and she does not even have Black Mage as one of her sub-jobs.
  • Red Baron: The Black Rose. Says it all about how feared a mage she was.

Ildyra

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ildyra.png
Master of Arithmetic
"Giving up is not an option, for I am Queen Helena’s elite guard."

An Arithmetician of Leonis, she dreamed of following in her late mother's footsteps and becoming a tactician. However, Queen Helena worried for her safety and appointed her manager of Leonis's finances instead. She believes that mathematics can change the course of battle.

Voiced by: Yurikawa Aizawa (Japanese), Suzie Yeung (English)

Elsirelle

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eisrelle.jpg

An extreme slacker of a Leonis soldier who managed to spend entire weeks asleep while Leonis Castle was attacked.

Voiced by: Nanako Mori (Japanese), Lizzie Freeman (English)

  • The Slacker: Can someone explain how does anyone sleep the entire time while Leonis Castle is attacked by Fennes, deserted and then occupied by the Sanctum?
  • Sleepyhead: It's bad. Really. You'd think Nasha's case of No Sense of Direction would be bad, but Elsirelle tops her simply for her knack of randomly falling asleep, as Camillo can attest to.

Caelum Division

  • True Companions: Mont's party is a very tight-knit one, with most of his team handpicked by him.

Mont Leonis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mont_7.png
Destined Prince
"I'll protect you! I swear it!"
Mont's oath to Machérie

"I don't want to slay a thousand enemies. I want to protect one person. That's why I fight."
Mont's explanation of his drive to fight

The older twin born to King Oelde and Queen Helena of Leonis. He dislikes war and believes in coexistence rather than power and conquest. After meeting Machérie, Princess of Hourne, he realizes that he needs to become stronger in order to protect those he loves.

Voiced by: Kensho Ono (Japanese), Bryce Papenbrook (English)

  • Badass Pacifist: Mont has no taste for fighting like his father or Sterne. This, however, doesn't mean he won't take to arms if need be, and he's shown to hold his own against far more powerful foes, such as a corrupted Sterne and later Muraga himself.
  • Boring, but Practical: His original MR variant. With his character shards easily purchasable with Gil along with the starter missions giving plenty of them, he is very easy to raise and unless a player purposely neglects him, will likely be one's first level 120 unit. With above average Move and Jump, high HP and defenses, he'll see pllayers through a large chunk of the story with minimal investment.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Mont and Robb arrive to save Machérie on Leonis Castle just as she, Camillo and Elsirelle start faltering against the crazed Sterne.
  • Cain and Abel: He's the Abel to Sterne's Cain.
  • Cherry Tapping: Has access to the Stone Throw ability, which does minimal damage. However, it is useful for finishing off foes who are still standing with single digit HP left.
  • Chick Magnet: Has the affection of Macherie, Glaciela, and Kitone.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Uses the Earth element in battle.
  • Expy: Of Ramza, fitting for the Tactics inspired story. Mont is the lord of a noble house who has a strong sense of justice and goes against his house for the sake of others. He visually looks almost identical to him as well.
  • The Hero: Mont is the primary protagonist of the game and the one the story follows almost the entire time.
  • Heroic Vow: He swears to Machérie that he will protect her at all costs.
  • Honor Before Reason: Mont's Fatal Flaw; he believes he can bring out the best of even the worst leaders, such as King Khury of Wezette, which often backfires on him.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: He's the only MR that has a Limit Break and voice lines during gameplay.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Serves as one to Lilyth for the younger brother she lost to Fennes.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Mont tends to avoid romantic advances and shipping from just about anyone, especially denying to people that he could have an item with Glaciela.
  • Stone Wall: One of the best MR-rarity physical tanks, with Paladin as a sub-class to help him make it through. If properly geared and leveled, Mont can stand fierce assaults from units like Orlandeau. He is offensively strong, but his classes primarily lean him towards tanking first and foremost.
  • The Strategist: Mont is not afraid to craft clever tactics on the fly, in the middle of a battle.
  • Summon Magic: Is in possession of Leonis's sacred relic, which lets him summon Visions. He is later given Hourne's sacred relic by Macherie.
  • Take a Third Option: Mont is constantly trying to do this, even in face of danger such as King Khury of Wezette being willing to deliver Oelde's head to Muraga.

Lilyth

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lylith.png
Blaze of the Battlefield
"I'm not going to die just yet. I'm doing this to live."

A knight who leads Leonis's second division, Caelum, and is feared by the neighboring countries for her swordsmanship. She has a rough manner of speaking but a strong sense of justice and cannot abandon those in need. She takes good care of Mont because he resembles the brother she lost in battle.

Voiced by: Yumi Uchiyama (Japanese), Amber Lee Connors (English)

  • Amazonian Beauty: Her scars all over her body do little to hide how gorgeous she is. Her Summer unit in JP shows this in even more detail.
  • Covered in Scars: This is a Show, Don't Tell manner of telling you she's went her mile in battles.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Her Summer unit in JP changes her element to Earth.
  • Lady of War: Leonis's own, experienced one. She's also all too willing to jump into battle when the time calls for it.
  • The Lancer: Serves as this for Mont, being his second-in-command.
  • Playing with Fire: Her main element.
  • Revenge: Her main drive for being in the Caelum division; her brother was killed by Muraga. Her first reaction upon seeing Schuzelt going for Muraga's head to avenge Naiah? Join him on the attempt.
  • Tomboy: In a manner. When discussing her interest in Schuzelt, Lilyth comments to Baelo that she has no interest in living a woman's life due to her nature as a warrior, at least not until she sees Mont to his throne. After this is done, maybe she'll consider doing more girly stuff.
  • Undying Loyalty: She will follow Mont's every decision without a single complaint.

Ramada

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ramada_0.png
Clairvoyant Lancer
"As ever the stars sparkle..."

A lancer from Leonis's second division, Caelum, and Lilyth's right hand, whom Lilyth always turns to for advice in times of trouble. She is the greatest astrologer in the land and even joined Leonis's forces according to the guidance of the stars.

Voiced by: Yoshino Nanjo (Japanese), Faye Mata (English)

  • Because Destiny Says So: She joined Leonis because she believes that's what the stars have in store for her fate.
  • Making a Splash: Has Water as her element.
  • Mission Control: Acts as this for the player, providing help with the tutorial and explaining mechanics as well.

Baelo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/baelo.png
Kind Young Lion

A Knight from Leonis's second division, Caelum, who is normally a laid-back gourmand. However, when his companions are in danger, he transforms completely into a valiant warrior. Mont's childhood friend, Mont asked him to join during the establishment of Caelum.

Voiced by: Toru Nara (Japanese), Billy Kametz (English)

  • The Big Guy: A literal example at that. He's one of the largest playable characters, and acts as the large heavy hitter of the group.
  • Childhood Friend: Mont and Baelo used to hang around a lot. This resulted in him calling the guy to join Caelum.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: His main element is Earth.
  • Skewed Priorities: He is more focused on food and relaxing over most other issues. Learte constantly has to chew him out for this.

Learte

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/learte.png
Archer Full of Dreams

An archer from Leonis's second division, Caelum, who surprised those around her at a young age when she hit bull's-eyes with arrows she fired while messing around. She joined Caelum after Lilyth told her she could become a world-class archer with the experience she'd gain in the army.

Voiced by: Yuu Serizawa (Japanese), Stephanie Komure (English)

Kitone

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kitone.jpg
Night-Blooming Flower
"I'll keep supporting him from the shadows. That's enough for me."

A shinobi girl who serves Leonis. Originally from Saiga, she was trafficked at a young age but was moved by the warmth of Lilyth and the others, swearing to serve Leonis for life. She is especially thankful to Mont, for whom she is starting to develop feelings of more than just gratitude.

Voiced by: Yui Ishikawa (Japanese), Erin Fitzpatrick (English)

  • Cannot Spit It Out: Due to her emotionless façade, she has serious problems admitting her feelings for Mont, something Sir Owe is well aware of.
  • Creepy Monotone: Her normal speech pattern is her doing her best to keep her emotions out of this.
Kitone, at her first turn on a battle: Enemy spotted. Engaging.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Earth is her main element.
  • Emotionless Girl: Kitone tries to pass for one, often keeping a Creepy Monotone on her voice. Sir Owe knows she's keeping a façade, which she drops once she sees him dying.
  • Playing with Fire: She becomes Fire-elemental in her Summer unit in JP.
    • Fun fact: in Brave Exvius, her collab unit actually has both Fire and Earth as her elements.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Once Sir Owe dies and Helena is taken for dead, she is all too willing to lash everything she has out on Dorando and Gargas.
  • The Stoic: She tries way too hard to not let her emotions show...
    • Not So Stoic: ...That is, until Sir Owe dies and she thinks Queen Helena is dead as well. Then she drops the emotionless demeanor and shows plenty of disposition to tear Dorando and Gargas apart for it.
  • Undying Loyalty: She was sold as a slave to Leonis, but Oelde and the Caelum Division sure didn't treat her as one, which caused her to swear complete loyalty to Leonis.

Fortem Division

Sterne Leonis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sterne.png
Fated Prince
Click here to check Sterne after his Face Heel Turn
Hate-Driven Prince
"My blade serves to protect Leonis. Right, Mont?"

The younger twin born to King Oelde and Queen Helena of Leonis. He has inherited his father's skill with a sword, and there are many who hope that he succeed the throne, rather than his brother. Because he was forbidden from going to battle, a confrontation with Oelde is becoming inevitable.

Sterne, clad in the golden armor bestowed by founder of the Church of the Crystal, Sadali. Containing a hidden power, this sinister armor amplifies Sterne's hatred for his father, Oelde. When enraged, it becomes almost impossible for him to distinguish friend from foe.
Voiced by: Yuichiro Umehara (Japanese), Zach Aguilar (English)

  • Berserk Button:
    • Don't harm his mother or his master Owe. Case in point, when Sir Owe actually dies and Helena is taken for dead, Sadali just knows this is bound to make Sterne near uncontrollable and makes use of it.
    • Don't get in the his way when it comes to killing Oelde if you want to live.
  • The Berserker: Sadali gave him his golden armor for this purpose; it feeds on his anger and makes him nigh unstoppable, and unable to distinguish friend from foe.
  • BFS: Sterne's main flavor of weapon.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: If Muraga's armor nearly overwhelming the King of Fennes is of any indication, this is what Sterne's golden armor, which feeds from his hatred, is trying to do to his wearer.
  • Cain and Abel: He's the Cain to Mont's Abel.
  • Casting a Shadow: His main element is Dark.
  • Critical Hit Class: His Master Ability boosts his Critical Hit Damage and a buff from his Ninja Sub-Job boosts his critical hit rate to take advantage of it.
  • The Dragon: Becomes this to Sadali, later in the story.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Thanks to Oelde refusing to let him fight for his kingdom, and later letting him and Helena to the mercy of Fennes, Sterne gladly asked Muraga to join his efforts to destroy Leonis just so he could kill Oelde.
  • Glass Cannon: The Soldier Class Passive, Self-Sacrifice, massively boosts his ATK stat at the cost of taking increased damage from all attack types.
  • If You're So Evil, Eat This Kitten! / Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: Muraga has Sterne do this by making him slaughter an entire village Oelde has just passed by to ensure there is no turning back for him.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Sterne has high agility and movement reach to go with his physical power.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: He will kill anyone who does any harm to Oelde. Only Sterne has any right to end his father's life.
  • Patricide: Congratulations, Oelde, you're such a bad father that Sterne became one of the villains solely for the chance to kill you.
  • The Power of Hate: The golden armor Sadali gave him feeds on his hatred to make him more powerful. If Muraga's armor and the effects on the psyche of Fennes's king is of any indication, it also has serious mental drawbacks.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Just because Oelde keeps him locked in Leonis Castle, doesn't mean Sterne is not able to mow down entire armies on his own. Just ask Dorando and Gargas about the thrashing they took from him on their first meeting.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Mont manages to set Sterne against Muraga's own soldiers when pointing out Oelde was wounded by them. Then Sadali comes with news that both his mother and Sir Owe died... and he goes out of control to the point that it takes Gilgamesh's Big Entrance to brake his onslaught.

Sir Owe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sir_owe.png
Seeker of Blade Souls
"Let's see how far we can push this aging sword, shall we?"

A swordsman invited to Leonis as a guest. Perhaps due to a sense of comfort, he joined Fortem, the corps led by Sterne. Born and raised in the east, he is known for his valor and unique style of swordsmanship. He is Sterne's sword instructor.

Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai (Japanese), (English)

Sosha

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sosha.png
Devilish Dragoon

A dragoon belonging to Leonis who was originally enlisted in the army of her homeland, Rundall. The army led by Jayden was so powerful that battles got boring, and after wandering for some time, she joined Leonis. She believes that battling for one's life is more fun when on the weaker side.

Voiced by: Rei Shimoda (Japanese), Brianna Knickerbocker (English)

Vallaide

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vallaide.jpg
Starry-Eyed Mage

An optimistic Green Mage from Leonis's first division, Fortem, who can laugh off any kind of danger and doesn't hesitate to sacrifice himself for the sake of his allies. He has feelings for Ramada but agonizes over her enlistment in Caelum, which prevents them from having any kind of interaction.

Voiced by: Anri Katsu (Japanese), Sean Chiplock (English)

  • An Ice Person: His element is Ice.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Just as Ramada and Lilyth are almost killed by Muraga, Vallaide runs in with the rest of Fortem.
  • Eaten Alive: Killed this way by the transformed Muraga
  • The Pollyanna: Highly optimistic even in face of dire odds, as shown in his interactions with Sosha and Little Leela.

Little Leela

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/little_leela.jpg
Guileless Spellblade

A Spellblade who, despite having no battle experience, managed to join Leonis's first division, Fortem, after her bright and enthusiastic nature caught Sterne's eye. She is very proud of the name given to her by her mother and becomes upset when mistakenly referred to by a different name.

Voiced by: Marika Kouno (Japanese), Lexi Fontaine (English)

  • Awesomeness by Analysis: The main reason why Sterne recruited her is because of her detective skills. Case in point, she manages to correctly deduct that Vistralle and Xiza are up to no good when her team spots them accompanying a carriage to Leonis Castle.
  • Berserk Button: She has a problem with people calling her by the wrong name and keeps count on how many times this has happened. Do this enough and she'll be out for blood.
  • Butt-Monkey: Seems to be at the receiving end of mockery among Fortem.
  • Casting a Shadow: Has Dark as her element.
  • Pink Means Feminine: One of the few female characters in this game to invest in pink for her color scheme.
  • Saying Too Much: Leela spouts about Hourne being technically allies of Fennes (and thus enemies of Leonis) to Deah, which causes her to attack Leela's team... And lose. Only then Vallaide and the others get to explain their situation to Deah.
  • Spell Blade: Her main class, notable for being a Dark-element user of such.

Yerma

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yerma.png
Scarlet Tornado
"I'll make quick work of any enemy."

A red-headed warrior who continues to search for a man stronger than her. Many men have fallen for her beautiful looks, but she has yet to meet someone who can defeat her in battle. On her journey, she happened to become acquainted with Etre.

  • Blood Knight: She looks for a man capable of beating her in battle. Should she find such a man? She'll marry him. This is what makes her interested in Sterne for starters.
  • Blow You Away: Wind is her element.

Etre

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/etre.png
Sunshine Monk

She left her home in hopes of joining Fortem after falling in love at first sight with Prince Sterne of Leonis. Originally from a poor village with an insufficient supply of weaponry, she chose to become a Monk and fight with her own body, awakening her full potential through her own method of training.

Voiced by: Eri Inagawa (Japanese), Amanda Julina Gonzalez (English)

Nasha

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nasha.png
Lost Holy Knight

Out of her love for Prince Sterne of Leonis, Nasha rejected the marriage arranged by her parents and left her village home behind. During the enlistment test for Fortem, the division led by Sterne, she headed towards a skeletons' den; but, having no sense of direction, she got hopelessly lost in the caverns.

  • An Ice Person: Has Ice as her element.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: As a Paladin, she's highly reliant on her shield.
  • No Sense of Direction: Nasha's sense of direction is horrible. She got lost on a cavern she was sent to for a Fortem recruitment exam, making Lylith assume she was dead, and causing Yerma and Etre to have to bail her out.
  • Stone Wall: The second MR unit of this category, after Mont. That said, while she can pull her own weight, people will still prefer Mont due to his ease of access compared to her.

    Hourne Kingdom

A grand kingdom ruled by King Robb spreading out to the west of Leonis. Hourne's first division Solidus is a threat to neighboring countries. The king is father to Prince Dario and Princess Machérie. While there are hostilities with Wezette, Hourne shares an amicable relationship with Leonis.

Tropes associated with them:

King Robb Hourne

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/robb.png
Brave and Wise King
"The favor bestowed upon Hourne..."

The king of Hourne, known for his patient, benevolent nature. Although he dislikes conflict, he decides to give his daughter Machérie away in an alliance with Fennes after Sadali, head of the church, warns him of the incoming invasion by the powerful country to the west, Rundall.

Voiced by: Masashi Ebara (Japanese), Ted Limpert (English)

  • Badass Pacifist: Robb has serious distaste for conflict, but when push comes to shove, he's actually a serious match for the likes of Muraga.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He's a goddamn specialist at this.
    • Kitone, Lynx, Adelard and Salire were having serious problems with Dorando and Gargas, again playing Flunky Boss with the help of Rairyuu and Zazan. Suddenly Robb turns up in the scene with Solidus and the fight turns a total 180°.
    • Xiza is all but dead after Sterne plowed through her, and Machérie, Camillo and Elsirelle were just about to suffer the same fate when Robb and Mont finally arrive on the scene.
  • The Good King: Robb's rule on Hourne is incredibly well-regarded in all of Ardra as a generous king. In fact, the only reason Hourne is at odds with Leonis is because they're allied to Wezette. Else? Robb sees no problem with helping Leonis against Fennes and the Sanctum.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: In line with his Samurai main job.
  • Light 'em Up: Has Light as his element.
  • Mercy Kill: Is given one by Mont after being bitten and cursed by one of Muraga's snakes.
  • Shipper on Deck: Supports Macherie and Mont enterring a relationship, even eagerly discussing the topic of a marriage between the two with her.

Princess Machérie Hourne

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/machrie.jpg
Beautiful Steel Maiden
"Show me strength that can move even the hardest of hearts."
— '''Machérie's challenge to Mont

The fortuitous daughter of Robb, King of Hourne, who always follows things through to the end. She has confidence in her ability to read people. On the way to meet her in-laws-to-be, her carriage is attacked by an unidentified group of bandits, but this leads to her fateful encounter with Mont.

Voiced by: Lynn (Japanese), Skyler Davenport (English)

  • Arranged Marriage: To seal the Enemy Mine treaty with Fennes, her father allowed Muraga to wed her. Machérie quickly realizes this is a front on Muraga's part once her carriage is attacked en route to Fennes.
    • Flavor text on Machérie's Vision Card reveals that Robb was actually opposed to the wedding; it was Machérie who convinced her father to let her do it as the alliance would provide a defensive chance against Rundall. Not that she was really okay with it, though: Dario notes to Vinera that she cried for a whole day after agreeing to that.
  • Damsel in Distress: She spends a nice chunk of time as either Fennes or the Sanctum's hostage, or getting beaten around by villains when trying to fight them.
  • Dare to Be Badass: Constantly challenges Mont to awe her in battle.
  • Light 'em Up: Runs in the family that she's Light-elemental like her father.
  • Mama Bear: The aunt variety. She may not be able to enter combat in Part 3 due to being pregnant with her and Mont's child but she still dispatches the Nitor Division to locate and protect Vinera and Daria upon finding out from Eldric that Garvall is not only planning her assassination but is also after her infant niece.
  • Playing with Fire: Her Christmas unit in JP changes her to Fire-elemental.
  • Summon Magic: Has Hourne's sacred relic in her possession, which allows her to summon Espers. She later gives it to Mont.
  • Unstoppable Rage: She arrives to her dead brother just minutes after Vinera leaves, and with Camillo and Deah already on the scene. She wrongly deduces Camillo was the killer and goes all out on him without thinking even the first time.

Prince Dario Hourne

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dario_9.png
Disquieted Scholar
"This isn't your fault. I was just born into the wrong place, into the wrong life."
Assuring Vinera she's not to blame for his situation

The prince of Hourne and Macherie's older brother. Although blessed as a natural spellblade, he hates fighting even more than his father does and has no desire to succeed the throne. Before Macherie is sent off the be wed, Dario accepts the king of Fennes's daughter, Vinera, as his princess.

  • Badass Pacifist: Admits to detesting fighting, and has stayed within the walls of Hourne castle for most of his life because of it. But when push comes to shove he shows himself more than capable of throwing down, eliciting awe from his assassins even as he's dying from illness while fighting them off. Case in point, he takes Doluza down in his last minutes without even being touched by this guy.
  • Blow You Away: His element is Wind.
  • Defiant to the End: Once Vinera shows the resolution to stay and fight for him, Dario himself shows his true spine and gives Doluza far more than what he bargained for. He still dies, but from his illness rather than any battle injuries... of which he had none.
  • Do Not Go Gentle: Played with. When Doluza's assassins come for him he is initially resigned and willing to let them take his life without struggle as he is already dying. It's when Vinera throws herself between him and the assassins that he starts to fight for her sake, all the while pleading for Vinera to just let him die and keep herself alive.
  • Foil: To Sterne. Both are son of a king and are kept behind the walls of a castle for most of their lives. While Sterne is resentful of this and wants nothing more than the chance to go out and fight for his kingdom, Dario has an aversion to fighting and is content with spending his time in the castle. When Fennes is poised to take Leonis castle, Oelde takes Mont and leaves behind Sterne, and when Hourne goes to war with Fennes one of Robb's first acts is to send Machérie to protect Dario. While Sterne is reputed as the stronger prince, he is ultimately defeated by Mont in single combat but is left alive, whereas Dario was widely believed to be weak and cowardly only for him to wipe the floor with the army of assassins sent after him without receiving a single wound only to perish from his illness shortly after.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Admits that his cough is due to much more than a simple cold. He eventually dies from this. When Camillo inspects his corpse, he finds that there aren't any wounds visible.
  • Magic Knight: His main job is Spellblade and his profile notes that he's a natural at it.
  • Mythology Gag: His quote above reads almost like an inversion of Delita's famous "'Tis your birth and faith that wrong you, not I".
  • One-Man Army: Tyrell notes in surprise that Dario appears strong enough to fight off an entire platoon by himself. Said strength is shown when Dario wipes out a room full of assassins in a single attack.
  • Power Incontinence: Is said to have little to no control of his magic, which is part of the reason he secludes himself.
  • Super-Reflexes: His assassins note while fighting him that it's almost as if he's predicting their moves. It's to the point that ultimately he dies not from battle wounds, of which there are none on his corpse, but from his illness.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Is subject to this due to his reputation for hiding behind walls.

Solidus Division

Schuzelt

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/schuzelt.png
Reckless First Sword
"Witness the might of the First Sword of Hourne."

A knight from Hourne's first division, Solidus, who possesses the name "First Sword" from his knack for rushing into the harshest of battles unafraid. Three days before the wedding ceremony with his beloved Naiah, he is ordered to escort Machérie to Fennes to be wed.

Voiced by: Yuki Ono (Japanese), Joe Gonzalez (English)

  • BFS: As is standard for the Soldier Class.
  • Blood Knight: While his plan was originally to surrender once Mont was far enough from Wezette Castle, Schuzelt decided to fight a little longer on the mere prospect of being able to see Serjes' strength for himself.
  • Critical Hit Class: His Master Ability gives him a large boost to his Critical Hit Rate.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Schuzelt initially didn't think much of Mont and Leonis, but their ordeal together turned him into a trusted ally, to the point he's willing to risk his life to ensure Mont escapes King Khury and goes to rescue Machérie.
  • Glass Cannon: The Soldier Class Passive, Self-Sacrifice, massively boosts his ATK stat at the cost of taking increased damage from all attack types.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners:
    • He's this with Engelbert, his Best Friend. Engel is willing to go any mile for Schuzelt, even giving a threatening message to Oelde for his wellbeing.
    • Schuzelt develops this with Mont as the story progresses, seeing his mettle in battle and how he cares for his True Companions.
  • Hold the Line: Schuzelt stays behind to fend Wezette's forces while Mont escapes to rescue Machérie.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: The reason for his epithet. Happens in the story after learning of Naiah's death, rushing straight for Muraga without a second though. Even with Lilyth joining him out of her own desire for vengeance, this ends poorly.
  • The Lost Lenore: Naiah, assassinated parallel to the start of the story, was Schuzelt's betrothed, and her death is the main drive for his Roaring Rampage of Revenge against Muraga.
  • Red Baron: "The First Sword of Solidus".
  • Revenge Before Reason: Once he learns his betrothed got assassinated by Muraga's henchmen, he renounces even his status as a knight of Solidus so he can get a shot at Muraga's head.
  • Shock and Awe: Has Lightning element for his repertoire.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Put him in front of Muraga and watch him throw all common sense out the window.

Shadowlynx

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shadowlynx.png
Lone Shadow
"Do you think anyone would shed a tear for me?"
Questioning Mont when he asks her to be careful

A shinobi from Saiga who was trafficked and sent to Hourne. She boasts undying loyalty to Robb and Machérie, who treat her like family. In particular, she and Machérie have been together since they were young, and she has always protected the princess like a bodyguard.

Voiced by: Yōko Hikasa (Japanese), Francesca Manzi (English)

  • Casting a Shadow: Her main element is Dark.
  • Killed Off for Real: Slain by Dorando, Gargas and Zazan.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Lynx is extremely agile and has the strength to support it, with only Kitone being superior to her in her class.
  • No True Scotsman: She thinks very lowly from the ninjas trained by Fennes, considering them "fake shinobi", and gets her point across as, even wounded from her battle against Rairyuu, she still mops the floor with a full detachment of these guys.

Engelbert

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/engelbert.png
Steel Guardian
"Hmph. Don't think that you can surpass me."

Commander of Hourne's first division, Solidus. From a family of knights that has served Hourne for generations, he has become known as the strongest shield in Hourne as a result of enduring his father's strict training. He awaits the day he can fight against the country of Rundall and avenge his father's death.

Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi (Japanese), Brady Hales (English)

  • Best Friend: He's Schuzelt's Childhood Friend, and he'll go to the lengths of threatening Oelde over the First Blade's safety.
  • Jerkass: If he happens to not like someone, he'll give the rudest treatment he'll be allowed to. Ask Vallaide and Leela on this. Or any Leonis participant in the war for that matter.
  • Light 'em Up: Has Light as his element.
  • Mighty Glacier: Once Engelbert has set his buffs in place, you'll find out that it's quite hard to take him down.
  • Stone Wall: The fiercest tank on the game's launch, and for a long time after, and for good reasons. Taking a well-geared Lv.99 Engel down takes far more physical and magic strength than it looks like.

Frederika

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/frederika.jpg
Lovestruck Forest Gunner

Lorenzo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lorenzo_2.jpg
Proud Dragoon
"I shall show you... the strength of a true Dragoon."

A Dragoon from Hourne's first division, Solidus, who idolizes Engelbert's willingness to protect his allies. A rather hot-blooded man, his ancestor was one of the few to be recognized by The Dragon, but he makes sure not to let it go to his head.

Naiah

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/naiah.png
Transient White Mage

A White Mage belonging to Hourne. She is in love with Schuzelt, whom she met by chance twelve years ago. She originally preferred to stay indoors and read but resolved herself to White Magic in order to be of use to Schuzelt, to whom she is currently engaged.

Voiced by: Michelle Marie (English)

  • Playing with Fire: Fire is her element.
  • Posthumous Character: She doesn't even get to appear on screen; all you get to know is that she died to Muraga's men while Schuzelt went to escort Machérie.
  • White Mage: One of the most basic White Mages, and a good option if the player has no access to Ayaka.

Nitor Division

Adelard

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/adelard.png
Vermillion Devil
"I'll show you why they call me the Vermillion Devil."

A young Red Mage who leads Hourne's second division, Nitor. While nothing usually fazes the calm-headed Adelard, his one weakness is his younger sister Salire, whom he values more than anything. Recently, he regrets perhaps having spoiled her, but it's too late at this point.

Voiced by: Takuya Sato (Japanese), Lucien Dodge (English)

  • Brother–Sister Team: He and Salire are almost never seen apart in battle, which contributes to both mages' reputations.
  • Chick Magnet: He's stated to be attractive enough to get attention from the girls. Problem is, these girls have to go through Salire first.
  • Nerves of Steel: Adelard rarely, if ever, loses composure in critical situations.
  • Playing with Fire: Has Fire magic in his repertoire.
  • Red Baron: So fitting for a Red Mage that he's called the Vermillion Devil.
  • Red Mage: His main class.
  • Super-Reflexes: This is the only explanation you could get for this guy parrying Lu'Cia's bullets with his sword.

Salire

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/salire.jpg
Naive Black Mage
"If only I could magic away everyone in the world... Except for Brother, of course."

A Black Mage from Hourne's second division, Nitor, and Adelard's younger sister, who speaks to even King Robb in an overly vulgar manner. She loves her brother dearly and thinks of anyone who tries to get close to him as an enemy, even becoming a Black Mage so as to protect him.

Voiced by: Rie Takahashi (Japanese), Elise Napier (English)

  • Big Brother Worship: Salire has extreme admiration for Adelard, to the point that she'll attack anyone who poses a threat to him... Or even gets close enough to him.
  • Black Mage: An extremely volatile one at that.
  • Blood Knight: To the point one could say she's outright psychotic. It's not rare to see Salire itching to get someone's head as a trophy.
  • Brother–Sister Team: One Salire constantly forces herself into with Adelard.
  • Motor Mouth: The girl is clearly hyperactive, and the speed at which she speaks shows.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: Leans disturbingly close to this mindset.
  • Shock and Awe: Lightning magic is her forte, and she pretty much is an expert at it.
  • Stripperiffic: Shows a lot of skin for a teenager, something Adelard calls her out on.

    Fennes Kingdom

A territory ruled by the King of the Barbarians, Muraga. It views the allied kingdoms of Wezette and Leonis as enemies and has a deep-seated desire to destroy them. As a means to reach this goal, an alliance was formed with Hourne using Sadali as an intermediary.

Tropes associated with them:

King Muraga Fennes

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/muraga.png
King of the Savages
"The true pleasure of battle lies in death throes and bloodbaths."

The king of Fennes, the country of savages that controls the frontier lands. He believes Leonis's ancient relic is the reason that Fennes can't defeat Leonis despite its overwhelming military strength. He follows Sadali, head of the church, with plans to steal the artifact and use it to destroy Hourne.

Voiced by: Masafumi Kimura (Japanese), Jarred Kjack (English)

  • Arch-Enemy: Considers himself one to the Leonis Kingdom and will stop at nothing to destroy its lineage.
  • Berserk Button: Muraga does not take well to defeat, or more precisely, to being belittled. It's amplified by the Golden Armor he wears.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Like Sterne, Sadali gave Muraga an armor that feeds on his negative emotions to grant him power. With Muraga, it's humiliation, and the armor eventually overwhelms him a while after Gilgamesh stops the open conflict between Fennes and Leonis, turning him into a serpentine monster.
  • The Dragon: He's effectively this to Sadali. At least until his armor turns him into a monster and he's killed by Mont and the others.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Muraga gets a CG scene for himself when he starts taking a detachment of Leonis soldiers down by himself with mere swings of his axe to demonstrate his brutality.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Loves his wife dearly, even if she doesn't love him back.
  • I Control My Minions Through...: Fear and Power, definitely.

Vinera Fennes

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vinera.jpg
Fallen Moon
"No matter what happens... I have no regrets!"

An assassin from Fennes who was kidnapped from her village by Muraga to be trained in the art of assassination from a young age. Sadali schemed to send her to Hourne under the guise of Muraga's daughter with the goal of assassinating the prince of Hourne, Dario.

Doluza

Voiced by: Xander Mobus (English)
A Fennes official who commands the Serpent's Den, a squad of shinobi assassins, which Vinera and Tyrrell are part of.

Tyrrell

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tyrrell.png
Loving Little Shield

A knight trained at the Serpent's Den, a shinobi training facility of Fennes. He was sent to Hourne as an escort to Vinera, who was wed to Prince Dario in order to assassinate him. At first, he hated Dario because of his feelings for Vinera, but...

  • Child Soldier: Let us be honest, he's a kid trained to be a Tyke Bomb in Muraga's ranks.
  • Making a Splash: His element is Water.
  • Token Good Teammate: It says a lot when the kid would rather make friends with his enemies where other from Fennes take pride on wanton killing. No wonder he turned so easily against Muraga when he realized Vinera was willing to give her life for Dario.

Oldoa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oldoa.jpg
Purgatorial Demoness
"Feast your eyes upon me, Oldoa of King Muraga's Imperial Guard!"
Oldoa's introduction to Mont

A swordswoman that is distantly related to King Muraga of Fennes and the sole strategist of the Fennes army. Due to her deep adoration of Muraga, she naturally has negative feelings for Sadali as he treats Muraga like a subordinate.

Voiced by: Yuu Kobayashi (Japanese), Morgan Berry (English)

  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Girl: She prides herself a lot in her strength.
  • The Berserker: Usually rushes into battle without thinking.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Oh man does she have an ego. That said, she puts it to good use to take her opponents by surprise, as Mont can attest to.
  • Blow You Away: Her element is Wind.
  • Cooperation Gambit: She lets Mont enter the fortress and take her hostage with barely putting up a fight, expecting him to plan to lure Muraga in for a counter strike, and then has Kilphe attack his troops from behind while they prepared for Muraga's arrival and getting them worn enough for Muraga to finish the job. Unfortunately for her, Mont also knows how to play this game.
  • Dumb Muscle: Oldoa looks the part, but makes this a Subverted Trope as she's actually smarter, quickly leading Mont's team into a trap deep into the fortress she's watching over.
  • Genius Bruiser: Don't let her muscles and dumb look fool you; she's a player, and she'll make sure to demonstrate that to whoever is her enemy.
  • Let Them Die Happy: Does this for a dying, blinded Muraga, lying to him about being his wife and telling him she loved him, letting him believe she finally opened her heart to him.
  • The Strategist: Muraga put her as Fennes's main strategist for a reason: Oldoa is really smarter than she looks. She played nice with Mont so he would wait for an ambush from Muraga, while Kilphe's troops came from behind to attack Caelum in the fortress. This also ends up distracting Caelum as Muraga's own troops close in from the other side.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Muraga, to the point she hates the fact that Sadali is playing him. One of the reason she sides against his wife is her refusal to comfort Muraga in his final moments.

Kilphe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kilphe.jpg
Quiet Miscreant
"No matter who my opponent may be, my path is unwavering."

Oldoa's right hand. She is originally from a frigid village near the border of Fennes and Wezette. Despite her wishes, she was made to serve in the war because of her unparalleled skills. Her only hope in life is her little brother, who was also taken prisoner, though she does not know if he is still alive.

Voiced by: Nozomi Nishida (Japanese), Tiana Camacho (English)

  • Creepy Monotone: Fennes's own flavor of this. Not even once does she raise her voice.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: One of the first playable mages to use Earth as an element.
  • Even Mooks Have Loved Ones: The only reason Kilphe is even rolling with Muraga is her desire to see her brother again. He acutally died a while ago and she knows it, only staying with Oldoa after Muraga is killed due to her tending to his grave.
  • Made a Slave: She's one of the people forcibly drafted into Muraga's army, with her brother taken hostage as to force her to cooperate. With Muraga gone and her brother dead, this is no longer the case and she fights alongside Oldoa by choice.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The quiet Blue Oni to Oldoa's loud Red Oni.
  • Spell Blade: Kilphe's secondary class, benefitting from her already high MAG stat.
  • The Stoic: Kilphe tends to go monotone in battle, keeping her calm at all times.

    Wezette Kingdom

A great kingdom located at the eastern edge of Ardra. Ruled by King Khury, Wezette is blanketed in snow all year round. The sole successor is Khury's illegitimate daughter, Glaciela. Due to Glaciela's rebellion against Khury, the kingdom is currently in a state of civil war.

Tropes associated with them:

  • Decadent Court: Wezette's royal line has a problem with people dueling for the top position. Khury lost his successor that way, and attempts were made on Glaciela. And that's not to mention how Properly Paranoid Khury is, or the fact that he and his daughter are right now at extreme odds to the point she repurposed her own army division into a rebellion movement...

King Khury Wezette

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/king_khury_0.jpg
Lofty Despot
"No one who mocks me will be forgiven. No one!"

King of Wezette, who is also known as an archer of extraordinary skill. Ruthless and suspicious of others, he has little trust from his subjects, who have revolted numerous times in the past. He formed an alliance with Leonis only to have a buffer zone between Wezette and Hourne.

Viktora

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/viktora.jpg
Elegant Dragoon
"That's not here or there. I simply despise being confined."
Her comment to King Khury when questioned about not staying put in Wezette Castle

A Dragoon traveling the land who doesn't like spending money on things other than her own appearance. She answered King Khury's invitation to return to her homeland of Wezette, and he in turn promised she'd become queen should she lead Wezette to victory.

Voiced by: Megumi Toyoguchi (Japanese), Erika Harlacher (English)

  • All According to Plan: The woman has a list of moves all set up by the time Mont leaves Wezette to rescue Machérie while she goads Glaciela into attacking her father without Mont's aid.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Margritte mentions knowing a Dragoon that could help... which happens to be Viktora, who arrives with Luartha and the Rubeus right as Oldoa has Mont on the ropes.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Viktora puts a pleasant front to Mont and the others, but is more than willing to throw Spirare and Rubeus into disarray as to make things easier for Khury.
  • Femme Fatale: Her Limit Burst should be all you need to check in terms of how seductive and dangerous she is.
  • An Ice Person: Has Ice as her element.
  • The Narcissist: Viktora rarely cares for anything other than her own beauty.
  • We Can Rule Together: Villain to neutral party variation. Khury's promise to Viktora should she take his opponents down is that she becomes queen of Wezette. She finds the prospect exciting to the point she's already thinking as if she's already there.
Viktora: I'll be queen... Aah, more enchanting words I've never spoken. So, how many children am I to bear you?

Serjes

Blunt Lancer
"Now observe. The art of the spear that has been mastered in this frostbitten prison."
Upon challenging Schuzelt

"There are some who live to defy their fate, and others who cannot live without it. I would be the latter."
Explaining to Schuzelt why he's still with Khury

A lancer who leads Wezette's first division, Equito. Due to cold treatment from Khury, he has lost all love for his country, but he continues to follow the king's orders because he doesn't want to abandon his beloved subordinates.

Voiced by: Kenji Nojima (Japanese), Joe Zieja (English)

  • A Father to His Men: It's the only reason this guy is still leading his men in Equito: He can't bear to leave them to whoever else Khury would put in charge of his team, much less get Severo and/or Yuni in trouble for his acts.
  • Honest Advisor: Even though Mont is technically his enemy, Serjes doesn't hesitate to help him and/or give him advice about Khury's behavior. He's also the one who suggests Mont to seek Rubeus' help in order to deal with the fortress on the outskirts of Wezette.
  • An Ice Person: Has Ice as his element.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He may be just following orders from Khury, but he's fully aware (and not liking a single bit of it) of what is happening in Wezette, warning Mont that even if he manages to calm Khury down in his plan to sell Leonis's heads to Muraga for the safety of his kingdom, the king won't take that quietly.
  • True Companions: Treats Severo and Yuni as this rather than being his subordinates.

Severo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/severo.png
Honest Black Mage

A Black Mage from Wezette's first division, Equito. He was forced into the army due to conscription, but because he hates the sight of blood, he chose to become a mage rather than a warrior. Although not a path he originally planned to take, his studious nature has led him to be a central figure in Equito.

Yuni

Virtuous Hunter

A Hunter from Wezette's first division, Equito. Having lost his entire family in the fires of war, he was scouted by Serjes to join Equito. His allies have faith in his superior ability with a bow, which is difficult to imagine from his youthful appearance.

Glaciela Wezette

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/glaciela.jpg
Spearhead of the Rebellion
"Are you prepared to face execution?"
Her question to Mont once he tells her he plans to face her father directly

Daughter of Khury, King of Wezette. Her mother was not the queen but a maid, and many attempts have been made on her life by those aspiring to succeed the throne. She despises King Khury and is secretly assembling her own brigade in order to start a revolution.

Voiced by: Yuka Iguchi (Japanese), Erica Mendez (English)

  • Antagonistic Offspring: She does not see eye-to-eye with her father and is actually planning to overthrow her father.
  • Assassin Outclassin': Known to have staved off a few attempts on her life by herself, as her half-brother's assassination caused her to train and learn how to properly fight.
  • Berserk Button: Harm her sister Cadia, and you'll discover why she decided that starting a civil war on her own father was a good idea.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Arrives to aid Mont as his forces are on the verge of being overwhelmed by Equito.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: On Viktora's goading she comes to believe that Macherie stole Mont, her betrothed, from her and subsequently Leonis' support for her rebellion (when in truth Viktora had deceived Mont into believing that Glaciela didn't need his aid at the moment). She responds by attempting to Murder The Hypotenouse, believing that she can get Mont back if Macherie was dead. Thankfully she snaps out of this once Viktora reveals her true colors and Macherie takes an attack meant for her.
  • Lady of War: Just ask Serjes how she got hardened into becoming Wezette's best warrior.
  • Making a Splash: Her in-game element is Water.
  • Rebel Leader: It happens when the Sadistic Choice is enough to cause you to become an enemy to your own father.
  • Sadistic Choice: Khury set one up for her due to not being born of the Queen of Wezette: to take the throne, she would have to kill her own family, including her sister Cadia. Glaciela not only refused, she took the entire Spirare division with her in order to wage war on her own father.
  • Violence is the Only Option: She knew that if she wouldn't kill her own family and take the throne, her own father would set her for the kill (and that was after she herself staved off an assassination attempt). She decided that the best way to defend herself and her family was to bring the war to his door.

Cadia

Blessing of Spirare

Bibulous Swordsman
"Allow me to show you the sword technique of the East."

A samurai from the east whom King Khury invited to Wezette due to his remarkable swordsmanship. However, after learning of the suffering caused by the king's tyranny, he began taking action with Glaciela's group. He is known for his love of alcohol.

Voiced by: Shunsuke Takeuchi (Japanese), Bill Rogers (English)

  • The Alcoholic: Says a lot when his pastime in the Far East was to join Sir Owe and spend the day drinking with him.
  • Enemy Mine:
    • He joined Spirare with Miranda once he became aware of Khury's rule over Wezette.
    • He helps Gilgamesh when King Jayden of Rundall presents himself as a threat.

    Rundall

A great military state to the west ruled by King Jayden. Rundall became the largest territory in Ardra by conquering the neighboring kingdom of Heindler, which was formerly ruled by King Jayden's childhood friend Oberon. Touting "Ardra Unification," Rundall plans to next invade Hourne.

Tropes associated with them:

  • Greater-Scope Villain: Let's be clear here: only Gilgamesh appears to be a higher threat than these guys. Even then, Jayden manages to take Gilgamesh down in one shot with his vision. Their invasions already crushed the kingdoms of Heindler and Ovis, and now they threaten to do the same to Hourne. Similarly, Jayden is also a threat to Sadali, who decided to force an alliance between Hourne and Fennes just so he could have something to halt Rundall.
  • Gun Nut: Rundall is known for its gunslingers to the point where their coat of arms has two guns on it.

  • Guns Akimbo: Her perk due to her Dual Gunner class.
  • More Dakka: Lu'Cia's preferred way of relieving stress.
  • Sadist: She loves to make her targets suffer and relishes on it.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Jayden.
  • Worthy Opponent: She sees one in Adelard of all people, as he's able to parry her bullets.

A Dragoon working for Rundall. A ladies' man who claims to be not in service of Jayden, but Heindler.

Voiced by: Mutsuki Iwanaka (Japanese), Todd Haberkorn (English)

  • Casanova Wannabe: He's definitely a ladies' man. He even goes out of his way to save Machérie rather than reporting to Jayden.
  • Enemy Mine: Teams up with Elsirelle (a Leonis soldier) when Sterne appears in Leonis Castle.
  • Insistent Terminology: Consistently claims to not answer to King Jayden, but rather Heindler, a kingdom already annexed by Rundall.
  • Playing with Fire: Has Fire as his element.

    The Crystal Sanctum

A fanatic congregation founded by Sadali. The head church, Dynverk Cathedral, is situated near the border of Rundall and Hourne; it is here that the Crystal shards amassed by the Church's followers are kept. The Church employs dozens of priest soldiers—a matter of concern among the great powers in Ardra.

Tropes associated with them:

  • Church Militant: They may be a religious sect, but have enough strength to rival most of Ardra's armies.
  • Corrupt Church: Sadali's acts in advancing the war in Ardra are so blatant that it's unnerving at how he can keep such a calm composure while doing all of this.
  • Enemy Civil War: The Sanctum is in their own conflict with Rundall.

Sadali Chrystea

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sadali.jpg
"May the light of the Crystals guide you..."

Founder of the Church of the Crystal, a religion with countless followers. He is trying to gather crystals from across the land and extract their magical power to serve a certain purpose.

  • All According to Plan: Even when stuff goes out of the planned route, such as Dorando and Gargas killing Sir Owe, he always has a contingency plan to make sure everything pans out his way.
  • High Priest: He's the leader of the Corrupt Church and works to control the war to his favor.
  • Oh, Crap!: It takes Gilgamesh coming to the battlefield and stopping Mont and Sterne's fight for him to actually lose his smug.
  • Smug Snake: Sadali banks on his extreme confidence all the time, as if having fun with the misery and destruction he causes.

Sadali's Personal Guard

  • Artificial Human: All three girls seem to have been constructed by Sadali and given Magicite artifacts.
  • Praetorian Guard: Sadali made them specifically to guard him and engage in combat in his name and nothing else.

"Whisper"

Voiced by: Ai Kayano (Japanese), Kirsten Day (English)

  • Casting a Shadow: Her element is Dark.
  • The Dreaded: Yes, Sadali's personal guard is known to all armies that matter, including Hourne's Solidus, judging by Engelbert's Oh, Crap! moment once he sees her spearheading the Sanctum monks.
  • The Stoic: Unless she's near Sadali, she will not even speak.

Exiled Warrior
"Shall I give you a little taste of pain?"

Dorando's younger brother, a fiendish mercenary who travels the land doing anything for status and fortune. He believes that foul play is an act of honor, but surprisingly, he pays proper respect to the truly courageous, whether they be friend or foe.

  • Blow You Away: Has Wind as his element, contrasting his brother.
  • Dirty Coward: Maybe even more than Dorando, as he thinks his moves are honorable.
  • Friend to All Children: He and Dorando raise a kid who lives with the Sanctum.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The same guy known for extremely cowardly tactics and bloodlust will also turn into a rather gentle person in front of his adopted child. This is not lost on Rairyuu.
  • Verbal Tic: Finishes most of his phrases with an "eh?".

Xiza

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/xiza.png
Devoted Fighter
"My mind was made up long ago."
Answering to Vistralle when he asks if she's sure that she wants to turn against Machérie

A wandering Monk taken in by Sadali. However, all that awaited her at the church was more and more rigorous training. Later, under secret orders from Sadali, she was sent to Hourne as a spy with the objective of causing a rebellion and annihilating the nation.

Voiced by: Ryōka Yuzuki (Japanese), Amber May (English)

  • Arch-Enemy: Considers herself one to Machérie, noting to Vistralle that she was humiliated by the princess in the past.
  • Ax-Crazy: If her attitude towards Machérie doesn't hint you, her Limit Burst will.
  • Casting a Shadow: Her element is Dark.
  • Enemy Mine: Xiza is faced with Sterne, who was supposed to be her ally and is targeting Machérie to get at Mont. When she realizes how dangerous Sterne is, she sees no choice but to aid Camillo and Elsirelle on the skirmish, and this costs her her life.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: Fights with her fists as a Monk.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Is first introduced as a spy in Solidus. Later revealed to be a Fake Defector.
  • I Have Your Wife: She pulls this by holding Machérie at Leonis Castle as a bargain chip for King Robb.
  • It's Personal: The main reason why she joined Sadali's ranks is her own feud with Machérie.
  • The Mole: She turns out to be working for King Robb, who secured her loyalty by promising that Xiza's mother would be supported and cared for. When Macherie agrees to uphold her father's promise, Xiza lays down her own life in Macherie's defense.

Vistralle

Stranger of Self-Destruction

A hunter from Hourne's first division, Solidus, who, desiring death by the hand of the strongest opponent, searches the battlefield for one worthy enough to award him with his demise. His true identity is that of a spy sent by Sadali to prepare for the inevitable rebellion.

    Outside Parties

Shinobi Village of Saiga

A shinobi village rivaling Gouga. However, the way of life in Saiga is completely different; the people have a deep sense of morality and desire to help those in trouble, even if it means sacrificing themselves. Shinobi such as Kitone of Leonis and Shadowlynx of Hourne hail from Saiga.

Skahal

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scar_8.jpg

The Chief of Saiga.

Voiced by: Kengo Takahashi (Japanese), Elliot Schiff (English)

  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: This guy has all the skills he needs to back his position as the chief of Saiga.
  • It's Personal: With Mariale and Zazan for Loreila's death.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Once Zazan manages to kill Loreila, all bets are off and Skahal starts to show what he's made of.
  • Shock and Awe: Salire has nothing on him. This Black Mage can wipe entire fields of Gouga Ninjas with a mere Flash Step if he's feeling like it.

Mia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mia_1.png
Unsullied Blade

A Thief of Saiga. Originally from a town destroyed by monsters, she is thankful to the chief of Saiga for taking her and her mother in when they had nowhere to go. However, being unaccostumed to simple village life, she dreams of being appointed to a rich noble.

  • Blow You Away: Her element is Wind.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Mia backstabbed Saiga in favor of Gouga.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Wears one stocking on one leg with the other going stockingless.
  • Foil: Becomes one for Ahlim, they are both young shinobi but while Ahlim continues to remain loyal to her clan and friends, Mia ditched everyone and went to Gouga without a second thought. Ahlim also puts the best interests of Saiga above her own wants as chief after Skahal is killed while Mia murders Mariale in order to usurp the position of Gouga's chief just so she can gain power and status for herself while planning to eventually stamp out the Great Houses of Ardra. Livialle rightfully points out these differences when giving Mia a very well deserved "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
  • It's All About Me: Everything she's done was because she desires power and status, even betraying her friends and killing her own mother and later Mariale in order to do so.
  • Killed Off for Real: Finally dies in Part 3, Chapter 4, Scene 2 in a last duel with Ahlim.
  • Klingon Promotion: Puts an already dying Mariale out of her misery just so she could gain Gouga's chieftainship.
  • Lack of Empathy: She really doesn't care about the consequences of her actions and how it affects others and is completely remorseless in regards to the pain she causes others. As a unit, she even starts her first turn with "I'm going to make you cry!"
  • Perpetual Smiler: Mia is always smiling, even when during cutscenes her character portrait showcases other expressions based on her dialogue, her CG rendering always keeps a permanently plastered on smile on her face.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Every rotten and sociopathic act Mia commits is always with a smile on her face.
  • Sadist: Just in case her first turn one liner as a unit isn't enough of a clue, Mia really enjoys tormenting her enemies.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Part 3 reveals she killed her own mother and her father is never mentioned so we can assume he's dead too.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: Skahal and his people selflessly accepted Mia and her mother as one of them after monsters destroyed their previous town and rendered them homeless. What does Mia do when war breaks out between Saiga and Gouga? She literally stabs Skahal in the back and flocks to Gouga after everything he and his village did for her and betrays her friends like they meant nothing and after everything they've been through!
  • We Used to Be Friends: Mia was once friends and as Ahlim put it "almost as close as sisters" with the other shinobi girls in Saiga but became a completely different person because of the war with Gouga. This is discussed and lampshaded when Neia asks Ahlim, Kitone and Livialle why they are praying for Mia after she dies.

Shinobi Village of Gouga

A shinobi village rivaling Saiga. In Gouga, war is regarded as essential to survival, and the only way to get ahead is to eliminate those who would stand in one's way. Ruled by Mariale, shinobi such as Rairyuu and Zazan hail from Gouga.

Voiced by: Satoshi Hikami (Japanese), Brandon Hearnsberger (English)

  • Arch-Enemy: He's this to any Ninja from Saiga, particularly Shadowlynx.
  • Casting a Shadow: Dark is his main element.
  • Enemy Mine: He's willing to pull this if someone pays him to.
  • The Gunslinger: Rairyuu takes pride in his Gunner skills.
  • Only in It for the Money: The only reason he's working for Muraga is because he's being paid for it. Not that it matters though; due to some Saiga Ninjas being in the mix, Rairyuu is more than happy to take part in this.

Zazan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zazan.png
Immortal Cutthroat

A warrior affiliated with Gouga. He loves nothing more than slaughter and has found a kindred spirit in Rairyuu, who introduced him to the shinobi village. He is said to be immortal as he is not killed as easily as most men.

A Time Mage from the northern kingdom of Ovis. Half a year ago, the country was drawn into battle with Rundall despite no declaration of war and fell into ruin as a result. In order to save her country, she left on a journey to seek reinforcements with Hourne, but she knows deep in her heart that it may already be too late.

Restoration Leader

A Black Mage from the northern kingdom of Ovis. He formed a second platoon after losing contact with Phoebe, who, hoping to protect her homeland from Rundall, left to seek reinforcements from Hourne. • BFS: Not her weapon type, but her sword is almost her size.
  • Determinator: She came to the Far East seeking to become a Samurai. Despite Miranda's warnings and both Seymore and Owe's refusals, she still wants to press on.
  • Revenge: It's revealed at the end of her Story Event that she went to the Far East not to become a Samurai, but to avenge her family as their killer went there. Miranda advises her to pursue a new path once she's done.
  • Shock and Awe: She's especialized on Lightning.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Her sword, the Hollow Slave, was once her father's.

Ariale

A heavenly palace thought to exist atop The Fall, a massive waterfall far to the west of Leonis that divides the Ardra continent in two. It is said that the Winged One fled here to watch over the palace's ethereal goddess and the sanctuary in which she is enshrined, but no one is certain whether this is fact or fiction.

Winged One

A being surrounded in mystery whose wings of steel are said to transcend not only space, but time as well. He entrusts Leonis with the role of "Guardian" and is trying to instigate the kings of each country to prepare for the impending "Time of Judgement".

  • Always a Bigger Fish: He is the bigger fish to Sadali, and the only one Sadali will take orders from.
  • Big Entrance: Reveals himself to the main characters by descending from the sky, and ripping the battlefield in half with a beam of light from his finger. The resulting damage incapacitates everyone.

  • An Ice Person: In line with his past as the Veritas of the Frost, Ice is his element.
  • Revenge: According to his event in Brave Exvius, his actual goal is getting back to Paladia so he can give Vlad his violence and regards, which isn't a different goal from what Citra had in mind back then.
  • Time Travel: Implied to be how Gilgamesh got to Ardra in the first place. May have something to do with his new armor.
  • The Worf Effect: Jayden proves himself to be dangerous when he manages to one-shot Gilgamesh with a Vision of his former partner Citra. He survives, but has to be helped by Seymore.
