Hyenas

    Janja
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/janja.png
Voiced by: Andrew Kishino

"The Pride Lands will never know what bit 'em."

Janja is the leader of a clan of hyenas that dwell in the Outlands. He seeks only to feed himself, and seems to have no respect for the Circle of Life.

  • Ape Shall Never Kill Ape: Subverted. Whilst he's reluctant to kill Jasiri under Scar's orders, it's because he appears to have feelings for her, rather than any reluctance to harm a member of his own kind.
  • Artistic License – Biology: He's the leader of his clan, despite hyena clans being led by a female in real lifenote . While one could justify this since all of his clan appears to be male, hyenas don't form same-sex clans in real life, either. Subverted as of season three, where he switches sides and joins his clan with Jasiri under her rule.
  • Backstab Backfire: Throws Cheezi and Chungu out and then gets betrayed by his new minions.
  • Bad Boss: He really doesn't care about his fellow hyenas, and berates and insults them regularly.
  • Beauty, Brains, and Brawn: The Brains.
  • Benevolent Boss: He may dismiss and insult his fellow clan members, but when Scar tries to burn them alive, their calls to him for help cause him to immediately defect to the Pride Lands.
  • Bad Is Good and Good Is Bad: In "Rescue in the Outlands" he looks down upon Jasiri's positive traits, such as being kind and respecting the Circle of Life, acting as if hyenas shouldn't have those traits.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Bringing Scar's spirit back from the dead to cause more trouble for the Pridelands did not prove to be beneficial for Janja in the end. Not beneficial at all.
  • Being Evil Sucks: While Janja reveled in being a rebel and a villain in Season 1, it's really starting to lose it's luster for him by the back-end of Season 2. He's had his ass kicked by the Lion Guard countless times; Scar and Ushari have completely usurped his authority over his clan; Scar, his former idol, has punished and disciplined him so many times the hyena is now terrified of making him angry; and he nearly suffers a Karmic Death in "The Hyena Resistance". When Jasiri offers him a chance to leave Scar and his current, toxic lifestyle, Janja noticeably hesitates and seems to consider it before he remembers where his loyalties are supposed to lie and turns her down. This trope eventually plays a part in his Heel–Face Turn in Season 3.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Whatever you do, do NOT double-cross him or his clan.
    • The Lion Guard themselves also seem to set him on edge (before his Heel–Face Turn in Season 3).
    • Messing up his plans, no matter who you are, is another way to annoy him.
  • Big Bad: Of both the movie and the first season of the TV show.
  • Brains and Brawn: The muscle to Ushari's brains.
  • Broken Pedestal: He once admired Scar for being the treasonous rebel that he was in his pursuit of reigning over the Pridelands, and hoped that reviving his spirit and impressing him would inspire Scar to grant Janja more power and better food supplies. He quickly finds out that Scar really only sees him as an easily-influenced wannabe who follows his order without question and is just as replaceable as the rest of his newfound lackeys, leading to Janja beginning to question Scar's true intentions.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Janja is fully aware of his status as a rebel hyena and a bad guy to everyone in the Pridelands, and rather proud of it. After Janja learns a hard lesson in humility and the true price of evil in Season 2, he has a change of mindset in Season 3, admitting that playing the good guy isn't so bad as well and is certainly less toxic all around.
  • Co-Dragons: He and Ushari are Scar's in Season 2.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He has his moments
(after Cheezi points out a melon) What do you take me for, a vegetarian? (Return of the Roar)
(after hearing Nne and Tano's plan) Oh, I get it! And then we come home hungry! That sounds like one of my plans! (Janja's New Crew).
  • Defecting for Love: It’s heavily implied twice Janja was within a hair’s breadth of doing so because of Jasiri. First, in the “Hyena Resistance”, he was saved by Jasiri from falling into lava, and he hesitated for a brief second about joining her before refusing. Then in the Season 3 premiere, during “A New Way To Go”, Janja feels like things are just different now, and suggesting he’s seemingly catching feelings for Jasiri.
  • Defector from Decadence: Janja's loyalty to Scar had been waning throughout the second half of Season 2, but it finally breaks completely in the Season 3 opener, when the hyena pulls a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Demoted to Dragon: Is subjected to this in season two, taking orders from the spirit of Scar.
  • Depending on the Writer: The level of threat he poses varies by the episode, as does his competence. In one episode, he's a comedy villain who's deceived by his new underlings. In another episode, he's a genuine threat to our heroes who nearly succeeds in murdering them.
  • Dirty Coward: He prefers using underhanded tactics and sheer numbers to win. When faced with an even fight in "Can't Wait To Be Queen," he instantly ran. Justified, considering the Guard's powers. Case in point, Janja knows he doesn't stand a chance of beating his rival, Jasiri, in a fair fight, so he tries to have her killed in a steam vent in one episode. After Janja becomes a better person in Season 3, he becomes more of a Lovable Coward.
  • Easily Forgiven: Averted. While Kion might be forgiving, Simba is in no such mood, pointing out that he is an enemy of the Pridelands who committed very grave wrongs against them. Makuu decides to put everyone's minds at rest by offering to have the hyena at his mercy if he's caught lying, so Janja is not trusted right until the Pridelanders actually win.
  • Ear Notch: He has a noticeable tear in his left ear.
  • Enfant Terrible: Back when he was a cub, one of his first crimes was stealing eggs.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: In "The Hyena Resistance", Janja really doesn't understand why Jasiri would save his life out of her own good nature, especially after he had tried to kill her previously. This trope is still in effect after his Heel–Face Turn in Season 3, and very much played for laughs. Janja is on the Lion Guard's side at this point, but he makes it no secret that he doesn't understand why they do what they do, and he's a very reluctant ally.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Kion. While Kion leads a group of animals dedicated to defending the Circle of Life, Janja's clan is set on destroying it. This is in keeping with the portrayal of hyenas as the Unpleasant Animal Counterpart to lions.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • Desite often being abusive to the rest of his clan, he still truly cares for them, as shown in "Battle For the Pride Lands", when the rest of his clan get trapped in the Lion Guard's lair after it is set on fire.
    • Throughout season 2, he starts to develop feelings for Jasiri, which later (along with relaising that Scar double crossed him) Prompts him to perform a Heel–Face Turn. The end of season 3 even implies that they become a couple.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: If "Lions of The Outlands" is of any indication, it's suggested that the hyenas (Janja and his clan included) don't like Zira.
  • Evil Gloating: What generally backfires on him half the time. His desire to gloat usually results in his plans falling apart.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Janja always embraced his status as a pretty bad guy, and enjoyed causing trouble for everyone in the Pridelands whenever he could, but in Season 2, he bites off more than he can chew. He decides to bring back Scar, the Pridelands' greatest enemy, to do more damage than ever before and gradually comes to regret it when the evil, ghostly lion turns out to be way more than he can handle - abusing Janja throughout the season, and later tossing him and his men under the bus.
  • Evil Laugh: He is a hyena, after all.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Andrew Kishino gives him a deep voice.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He's fond of acting chummy towards those he's threatening.
  • Fatal Flaw: Pride. Not only does his pride in his own abilities make him overconfident (resulting in the Evil Gloating mentioned above), it also blinds him to his shortcomings, and the flaws in his plans. In "Janja's New Crew", he assumes himself to be the smartest hyena around, and believes that his leadership of the pack is absolute and unshakeable. This of course left him incapable of seeing Nne and Tano's betrayal coming.
  • Foe Romance Subtext: It does rather look like he has feelings for Jasiri. His song "The Worst Hyena We Know" sounds like a thinly veiled attempt to hide his feelings for Jasiri, and has some hidden compliments that he claims are the things he hates about her.
  • For the Evulz: Why he's so keen on causing chaos in the Pridelands, at least in Return of the Roar; Janja openly mocks the Circle of Life and merely wants to terrorize the savannah animals. It's not always as clear in the TV series; sometimes, he and his clan sincerely seem to be hunting before Kion and his friends drive them off. As the series progresses, Janja is defined as a greedy, rebellious anarchist who later makes contact with Scar's spirit so he can bring chaos to the Pridelands.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Melancholic.
  • General Failure: While most of his plans are smart, in several instances, he throws the plan out the window and fails several perfect chances, such as his kidnapping of Kiara. It seems by Season 2, this is turning around, having Ushari join him and bringing together an army of antagonistic animals.
  • Good Feels Good: Post-Heel–Face Turn. He admits that he's better off as a good guy in "Journey to the Pride Lands".
  • Green-Eyed Monster: It is heavily implied in "The Worst Hyena We Know" that Janja has feelings for Jasiri and he is deeply jealous of Kion's close friendship with her.
  • The Heavy: What he becomes in Season Two. He is a rare version is that Scar, serving in the Big Bad role cannot leave his volcano and is confined to fire, while Ushari taking the role of The Dragon, cannot be discovered as a traitor. As a result, Janja becomes Scar's primary instrument of active malice, but it quickly becomes obvious that Scar and Ushari would prefer a more competent person to actually carry out their plans.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In the Season 3 opener, out of disgust over being abandoned, and out of his heavily implied feelings for Jasiri, he defects to the Pridelanders and gives them information on how to defeat Scar.
  • Heinous Hyena: He's a spotted hyena who's a Villainous Glutton and just plain nasty. To the point that he believes that all hyenas should be rotten and mean, which is why he loathes Jasiri. He realizes how wrong he was in the Season 3 premiere, and subverts the trope by way of Heel–Face Turn.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Janja wanted to have Scar brought back so that he could aid him in getting food. In "Swept Away", Scar and Ushari effectively usurp the leadership of his clan, infuriating him.
  • Hypocrite: He attacks Jasiri when she enters his territory and is angry when she marks part of it when he forgets to redo it for the dry season but he has no respect for the Pridelands boundaries and will frequently invade the turf to try and eat the inhabitants.
  • Humble Pie: The events of Season 2, wherein he arrogantly bites off way more than he can chew and Jasiri has to save him a few times (despite everything he did), goes a long way towards teaching Janja some humility. In the Season 3 opener, after Scar is gone and a power vaccum has been left over, Janja freely admits he's not up to the job of being leader of the Outlands and nominates Jasiri instead, merging their two clans into one.
  • If I Can't Have You…: This appears to be his mindset regarding Jasiri, as he shows complete anger whenever Kion and Jasiri are brought up together.
  • Implausible Deniability: When he bumped into the Lion Guard in "Janja's New Crew", he tried to pretend like they were in the Outlands.
  • Insult Backfire: Regularly calls his minions "furbrains". Nne and Tano call him this when they betray him. Reirei also calls him this when they argue who should go after Rafiki.
  • In Love with the Mark: He strongly indicates that he has feelings for Jasiri, and he shows very clear reluctance to do any harm to her under Scar's orders.
  • Jerkass: Calling him a mean hyena would be an understatement. Besides his gluttony and disrespect for the Circle of Life, Janja is shown to be unpleasant in general, constantly belittling and insulting his own allies. His jerkassery is gone after his Heel–Face Turn in the Season 3 premiere.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He becomes one after his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Karmic Death: Very narrowly averted. After an entire season of being even more of a ruthless Jerkass than usual, karma finally catches up to Janja in "The Hyena Resistance". His latest attack on Jasiri's clan results in him falling into a volcanic vent and sliding towards his death in lava. He's only spared by Jasiri stepping in to save him, much to his surprise.
  • Kick the Dog: On top of his usual gluttony and villainy, Janja has also tried to straight-up murder the Guard, their friends and some innocent kids several times and generally enjoyed doing so, with "Swept Away" and "Rescue In The Outlands" being standout examples.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: In "Rescue In The Outlands", Janja tries to murder Jasiri and two innocent pups in her clan on Scar's orders, leading them to their would-be deaths in a steam vent. In another attack on her clan in "The Hyena Resistance", Janja nearly meets his own end in an extremely similar fashion, falling into a steam vent in a scuffle and plunging down towards lava, before Jasiri steps in.
  • Lazy Bum: Janja often gripes about doing menial labor, and during a flashback to when he was a cub, he complained about how he has to roll an egg.
  • Lovable Coward: The cowardly streak Janja had as a villain still remains after his Heel–Face Turn, as an integral part of his character. But since he's become a more selfless and humble hyena, who will push through his fears regardless to help the others, it's meant to be seen as endearing now.
  • Love Redeems: What kicks off his Heel–Face Turn is Jasiri, and it is made not so subtly clear that he loves her. He noticeably goes to her first when he defects, and immediately suggests that she be in charge of the Outlands.
  • Meaningful Name: Janja means "Crafty" or "Artful" in Swahili.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: As an anarchist, Janja initially idolizes Scar for all the trouble he caused the Pridelands. When he actually gets to meet the lion, it's a different story. Scar abuses Janja for his incompetence throughout Season 2, and usurps control over the Outlands from him. Scar trying to leave his clan to die in the Season 3 opener proves to be the final broken straw that convinces Janja to turn on him.
  • Mook–Face Turn: As the second season stretches on, Janja has less and less of a reason to remain loyal to Scar, as it becomes apparent that the ghostly lion is just using him. After being offered a chance to change sides by Jasiri in late Season 2, Janja finally decides to switch allegiances in the Season 3 opener and helps the Pridelanders to destroy Scar.
  • Never My Fault: He's quick to blame his underlings for his failed plans, or any mistakes he makes in general.
  • No True Scotsman: Janja considers true hyenas to be rotten and mean, and are those who hunt and kill mercilessly. As such, he considers Jasiri and her clan to be a disgrace to all hyenas and wants to eliminate them.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Much more so than any of the other Hyenas in the franchise, particularly his clan mates. For example when he lures Kiara into a trap his intention isn't to harm her, but to use her as a bargaining chip so that Simba will let him take any animals he wants from the Pride Lands.
  • Redemption Rejection: After Jasiri offers Janja and his clan the chance to join hers and help defeat Scar, Janja hesitates but refuses and runs off.
  • Redemption Equals Life: He turns good in the Season 3 opener, and he is among those most spared.
  • The Starscream: Downplayed, but in "Swept Away", he tells Cheezi and Chungu that they should only listen to him, and not Scar.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: To his dismay, he seems to be the only member of his pack with actual brains.
    • At least until "Janja's New Crew," where he has just as much intellect (or lack thereof) as the rest of the pack, with his new henchmen showing actual brains.
  • Ship Tease: It is made pretty obvious that Janja has feelings for Jasiri, regardless of how much he tries to deny it.
  • Smarter Than You Look: A lot his schemes are simple and have such glaring flaws, not to mention his endless pride, that you think he is the average idiotic cartoon villain. However, in The Rise Of Scar, after his original plan to make Kion roar fails, he quickly improvises and endlessly taunts Kion about threatening to kill the rest of his family including his parents, causing the cub to roar in a fit of rage, and succeeding in bringing Scar back from the dead.
  • Smug Snake: He's clever, but his ego gets the better of him on multiple occasions.
  • Took a Level in Dumbass: Ever since Scar was resurrected through the volcano, Janja has started to demonstrate a lack of initiative, and a lack of common sense.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: While Janja was already portrayed as a pretty selfish and ruthless antagonist in Season 1, his cruelty level is ramped up significantly from Scar's influence in the first half of Season 2. Janja gleefully trying to crush Beshte to death, and then trying to kill Jasiri and some pups in a volcanic vent are easily two of the worst things he's ever done in the series.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: His unpleasant demeanor begins to shed away after his Heel–Face Turn and he becomes more caring, showing concern towards the Lion Guard various times, despite all the animosity in their past.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Started out this way, at least. In Return of the Roar, he was a sinister, cackling presence that wasn't afraid to look Kion in the eye and threaten him. More importantly, he held the intention of wiping out an entire herd of gazelles for the sole purpose of intimidating the Lion Guard; the special made it explicitly clear Janja would not stop until they were all dead. Come the actual series, he's much more cowardly and benign, with a characterization that drifts back and forth between "disgrunted, jerkish poacher" and "disgrunted, jerkish poacher whom Kion bullies on his own territory as often as Janja intrudes on the Pridelands." Janja's threat level rises again in the second season, with encouragement from Scar's spirit to start ramping up his murderous, anarchist tendencies, but it comes at the cost of Scar usurping his authority.
  • Villain Song: "Tonight We Strike", "Outta the Way", "Panic And Run", "The Worst Hyena We Know", and "We're the Smartest".
  • Villainous Crush: He is very heavily implied to have feelings for Jasiri.
  • Villainous Glutton: His main motive is to kill and eat as many animals as he wants in the Pride Lands, defying any rules or the Circle of Life (which he spits on, claiming it's "for fools").
  • Unwitting Pawn: After turning against Scar in the Season 3 opener, Janja gives the Lion Guard information he thinks will help them destroy Scar (that Kion's roar can collapse Scar's volcano). In turns out that Scar had fed him misinformation earlier, and in reality, Kion's roar will cause the volcano to erupt, utterly decimating the Pride Lands.
  • Worthy Opponent: The Season 3 opener makes it clear that regardless of how much Janja hates Kion, he clearly has a respect for the lion cub.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: "The Scorpion's Sting" shows he's terrified of scorpions.
  • With Catlike Tread: He has a habit of cackling loudly whenever he hunts. On more than one occasion, this has alerted the Lion Guard to his actions from afar.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Even though he is a far less danger, the series makes it clear that he has no qualms about endangering or killing children. Although the Lion Guard is a subversion since they are fighting back, Kiara, the other children, and Muhimu's baby are all primarily helpless when he goes after them, which plays them straight.

    Cheezi and Chungu

Cheezi (left) and Chungu (right)
Voiced in English by: Vargus Mason and Kevin Schon (respectively)
Voiced in Latin American Spanish by: Oscar Flores and Noé Velázquez (respectively)
Voiced in Japanese by: Kazuyoshi Hosoya (Cheezi)

Cheezi and Chungu are the main dimwitted henchmen of Janja and often follow him in his plots.

  • Affably Evil: Despite following orders without question and happily trying to kill the Lion Guard, they are overly friendly to others.
  • Beauty, Brains, and Brawn: Cheezi's the Beauty and Chungu's Brawn
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: Chungu is large and well-built while Cheezi is small and scrawny.
  • Bumbling Henchmen Duo: The two of them are subordinates for Janja, forming a Terrible Trio with him. Unlike the fairly competent Janja, Cheezi and Chungu are simple-minded and bumbling.
  • The Ditz: Their stupidity can sometimes ruin Janja's plans.
  • Desperately Needs Orders: In any serious or important situation, the pair are hopeless without Janja giving them instructions. This was most apparent in Janja's New Crew where two are just hopeless without Janja to tell them what to do. They even tried bossing each other around briefly before realizing it just wasn't the same. Fortunately Janja hires them back by the end of the episode.
  • Dumb Muscle: Chungu.
  • Fish Eyes: Cheezi has these.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Cheezi (Sanguine) and Chungu (Choleric)
  • Heinous Hyena: Albeit an unusually friendly example.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite being lead by Janja and constantly being berated by him, Cheezi and Chungu admire him as a leader. In "Janja's New Crew", they also appreciate contributing to the Circle of Life by scavenging, although they have no idea what the Circle of Life is.
  • Literal-Minded: They take a lot of things said to them literally.
  • Nervous Wreck: Cheezi is mostly this at times.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Chungu is a headstrong and hotheaded red while Cheezi is a soft and cheerful blue.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man:
  • Shorter Means Smarter: A relative example - Cheezi is slightly more intelligent than Chungu.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Janja feels this way around them.
  • Too Dumb to Live: In "Janja's New Crew", they fail to catch a group of antelope due to a poorly-constructed plan. Then they jump off a ledge to join a trapped Janja.
    • In "Battle for the Pride Lands", Chungu actually has this. After Scar double-crosses the Hyenas, intending to burn them with the Lion Guard and the royal family inside Pride Rock, Cheezi asks Chungu if they should follow Janja (who barely managed to escape first, before it was too late) and jump through the entrance to the Lion Guard's lair that is currently backfired. It is Chungu who tells Cheezi it's too hot to do that, noting that even he's not that dumb.

    Nne and Tano

Nne (left) and Tano (right)
Voiced by: Beau Black and Dee Bradley Baker (respectively)

A pair of hyenas in Janja's clan who usually stick to the background, but prove to be far more cunning and capable threats than expected.

  • Ascended Extra: After serving as minor background characters for the majority of the series, "Janja's New Crew" properly introduces them as supporting villains of the series.
  • Conservation of Ninjutsu: Part of the reason their competence diminishes is because this trope takes effect once they're seen with more of Janja's clan.
  • Characterization Marches On: In their first appearance, they were portrayed as perhaps the most dangerous antagonists that the Lion Guard had faced. By "The Rise of Scar", however, they seem to be devolving into bog-standard level threats.
  • Co-Dragons: To Janja in "Janja's New Crew", though they have plans of their own, making them...
  • Dragon with an Agenda: Once they attained a position of power, they quickly moved to kill and usurp Janja.
  • Easily Forgiven: Perhaps out of desperation, Janja allowed the pair to return to his clan despite having survived an assassination attempt from them.
  • Heinous Hyena: They're even worse than Janja. Well, until Season 2 anyways.
  • Knight of Cerebus: They are far more serious and threatening antagonists than Janja could ever hope to be, and the comedy of a scene is usually nearly drained in their presence. They nearly kill a herd of oryxes in their introduction. As noted in Characterization Marches On, however, this trope fades away with their competence.
  • The Starscream: They've grown tired of Janja's poor leadership and attempt to usurp him as clan leader.

Vultures

    Mzingo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mzingo_img.png
Voiced by: Greg Ellis

Mzingo is a white-backed vulture. He acts as a scout and spy for Janja.

  • Airborne Mooks: Mzingo and his committee provide aerial support for Scar's Legion of Doom, effectively taking away Ono's flight and spying advantage in the Outlands with their sheer numbers. In fact, they are capable of flying higher than what Ono's species is capable of, coupled with Ono being unable to see through clouds, meaning they rule the skies.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Honestly thinks gloating to Fuli about how he intends to kill a baby baboon is a good idea.
  • Circling Vultures: Of course. According to the Guard, this is a sign he and his committee are out for trouble.
  • Death from Above: Mzingo's favorite tactic is dropping fire sticks on the Pride Lands, and his whole flock can do so above the clouds. Most Pridelander birds cannot fly that high, nor see past the clouds, making it perfect for aerial ambushes.
  • Demoted to Extra: Despite being allies with Janja, he became less frequent as the show went on, to the point where he was seemingly Put on a Bus in the first half of Season 2. Although he finally returns in "The Scorpion's Sting".
  • Dirty Coward: He and his parliament showed signs of this in "The Search for Utamu" when they attempted to attack an exhausted Fuli. They are even worse in "Baboons!" where they relentlessly chase after a single baby baboon.
  • Evil Brit: Boasts a British accent, and is quite wicked. That is, until after the Season 3 premiere.
  • Evil Counterpart:
    • His accent (and position relating to Janja) makes him one to Zazu.
    • To a smaller extent, he's one to Ono, being the only flyer under Janja's lead.
  • Feathered Fiend: In keeping with the vulture stereotype. The "fiend" part, however, disappears after his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He and the other vultures reform after Scar's defeat, albeit only after being threatened by Cheezi and Chungu. By the series finale, he has completely sworn his loyalty to Jasiri, whom he views as a prime minister, and he's stopped lighting his enemies on fire.
  • Karma Houdini: Due to his position as a spy/informant for Janja, Mzingo rarely gets into the action himself, meaning he usually doesn't suffer any retribution for his actions. When he's not working for Janja, however, he's not so lucky.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: After setting fire to the Pride Lands and getting away with it, he and his committee get their comeuppance in "Fire from the Sky" when the Guard finally discovers what they're doing and rallies the birds of the Pride Lands to stop them.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Becomes more threatening in "Baboons!" when he goes after an infant with the intent of killing it in front of Fuli.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Fuli beats the living daylights out of him in "Baboons!".
  • Pyromaniac: Mzingo just loves to light things on fire during his time in Scar's Legion of Doom.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: When he and his parliament join Scar's forces, Mzingo claims he and his vultures are the best among them. Considering these forces include crocodiles, jackals and hyenas (the last of which he and his parliament once willingly served under), and the parliament's lack of combat abilities, this claim falls a little flat.
  • Smug Snake: In "The Search for Utamu", the Villain Song he and his parliament sing claims that they are "the greatest in the Pridelands", "ruling all others from on high". In reality, they are among the least threatening of the Guards' foes, easily being beaten back by the others when they protect Fuli (Ono, a much smaller bird, is able to drive Mwoga away just by pecking him).
  • Vile Vulture: He's a vulture and an ally of a villainous hyena clan. Subverted after his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Villain Song: "All Hail the Vultures".
  • Villainous Glutton: Given he's willing to help Janja's clan kill as many animals as they want. And in "Baboons!", he and two of his committee members try to eat a baby baboon that would be barely enough for all three of them.
  • Would Hurt a Child: "Baboons!" has him and two other members of his committee going after a single baby baboon.

    Mwoga
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mwoga_img1.png
Voiced by: Cam Clarke

A white-backed vulture who is a member of Mzingo's committee.

  • Dirty Coward: More so than Mzingo. He would rather go after victims that cannot fight back, and when faced with a formidable opponent he is quick to retreating.
Mwoga: (after being subdued by Bunga and surrounded by the Guard save for Ono) Um, off to the Outlands then?
Kion: Good idea, Mwoga. Get outta here.
  • Does Not Like Spam: He would rather eat carrion, and has a distaste for fresh meat.
  • Evil Brit: He shares a British accent like the rest of his committee. Subverted after his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Feathered Fiend: Like Mzingo, he is no exception to the Scavengers Are Scum stereotype of vultures. Also like Mzingo, he is longer this after his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He and the other vultures reform after Scar's defeat, albiet only after being threatened by Cheezi and Chungu.
  • The Lancer: For Mzingo.
  • Meaningful Name: Mwoga means "cowardice" in Swahili, alluding to him being a Dirty Coward.
  • Vile Vulture: A member of a villainous committee of vultures. Well, until they have a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Villainous Glutton: Besides going with Mzingo and the rest of the committee in helping Janja's clan indiscriminately kill many animals as they please, he's also not above helping out an invasive predator in exchange for scraps he can eat later (although that time he did consider negotiating with his committee until being told it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity).
  • Villain Song: Sings "All Hail the Vultures" with the rest of the parliament. Gets his own singing role in "A Real Meal" along with Mpishi.
  • Would Hurt a Child: In "Baboons!", he goes with Mzingo and another vulture in targeting a single baby baboon. And then in "Ono and the Egg", he allies with Mpishi and helps her go after Kulinda's daughter for the harrier-hawk to eat and leave the scraps for him.

An Egyptian cobra who has a strong dislike for Bunga.

  • Anti-Villain: About the only thing he does that is antagonistic is biting Bunga. In Season 2, he turns into a full blown villain aiding in resurrecting Scar.
  • Ape Shall Never Kill Ape: Subverted. Despite believing that reptiles are superior, he has no qualms eliminating fellow reptiles who are against him and his association, let alone refuse to join him, such as Kinyonga.
  • Blackmail: Ushari initially considers blackmailing Kion when he finds out about Kion being able to talk to Mufasa.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: By Season 2, he and Janja are the leading main antagonists attempting to take over the Pride Lands - under Scar's leadership, anyway, and Janja ends up getting demoted under the cobra.
  • Butt Biter: Bites Bunga on the butt in response to him landing on his head.
  • Butt-Monkey: He had this role throughout Season 1, where anytime he appeared, it was usually to get attacked by Bunga, or for something similar. This status is what leads him to pull a Face–Heel Turn and aid the hyenas in summoning Scar.
  • Brains and Brawn: While Janja acts as the muscle for Scar, Ushari is the brains who takes care of the logistics.
  • The Corruption: His cobra venom can affect someone's mind if he injects it into someone, something he does to Kion in the Season 3 opener. However, while said venom can remove a person's morals, they still are in control of their actions, and it can be cured quickly.
  • Co-Dragons: He and Janja serve as this to Scar in Season 2.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: While we don't see it, he falls into the lava and burns to death when he tries to attack Kion in order to prevent Scar from being defeated.
  • Cute Little Fangs: To some, his fangs can come across as this as they're not particularly large. Truth in Television, as cobras have relatively small fangs.
  • Defiant to the End: Makes one last attempt to kill Kion after he finally defeats Scar.
  • Disney Villain Death: In the Season 3 premiere, he falls into Scar's volcano.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Ushari sides with Janja and plots the Lion Guard's downfall, all because bad things usually happen to him whenever they're near (despite Bunga being the only one of the Guard who ever antagonized him, and even then, there were times when Bunga did not intend to hurt the cobra).
  • The Dog Bites Back: He finally bites Bunga in "Fuli's New Family". Knowing that honey badgers are immune to venom, though, he bites him only once and says so to Beshte after the hippo tells him Bunga didn't mean to land on him. He finally loses patience with the Lion Guard as a whole and joins Janja's clan partially to get rid of them for all the trouble they've caused him.
  • The Dragon: Quickly takes up Scar's number two when the evil lion is resurrected, and is even more competent at the job than Shenzi ever was. He's also Scar's favorite amongst his new followers, since he's had a largely successful track record when it comes to intel and recruiting.
  • Dragon Their Feet: After Scar is banished for the final time, Ushari outlasts Scar by 11 seconds, which he spends attempting to attack Kion in anger, but Bunga steps in, causing Ushari to fall in the lava.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Zazu. Both are the Iron Butt Monkeys of the lions they serve (Mufasa and Scar) and are even the Servile Snarkers under Scar's leadership. But while Zazu retains his loyalty to Mufasa even when his former king was killed by Scar, Ushari snaps after taking so much abuse from the Lion Guard, and sides with Janja and his clan to revive Scar, even becoming his new number two when Mufasa's brother is revived. Hell, a cobra was going to be Scar's sidekick in the early development of The Lion King before it became Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed in the final version.
  • Evil Feels Good: Ushari seems to be having a lot of glee in being Scar's follower, going with his plans without question and not showing a hint of remorse. He even willingly goes along with Scar's ultimate endgame to cause a massive volcanic eruption that will destroy the Pride Lands.
  • Evil Genius: Perhaps why he's the biggest asset in Scar's operation. He's the main strategist, and has a lot of connections to the worst of the worst animals whom he can call in as favors.
  • Evil Minions: Leads a whole cadre of them, most of whom are reptiles skilled in subterfuge.
  • Evil Slinks: Post-Face–Heel Turn he would scout activity in the Pride Lands in secret and manipulate potential recruits.
  • Evil Sounds Deep / Evil Sounds Raspy: speaks with a deep, rough voice courtesy of Christian Slater.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Pulls one in "Rise of Scar," hoping that the evil lion's cunning will make the rest of the Pridelands fear and respect him.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: He burns to death, making him the most graphic death in a Disney Junior show.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Being a cobra, he sports a pair of fangs housing venom glands, though he only used them on Bunga who is immune to venom. The "evil" part, however, doesn't bloom until "The Rise of Scar".
  • Fantastic Racism: He seems to be biased more towards reptiles than any other animal. Most his minions (the ones he knew before meeting Janja) are reptiles, and onscreen he or his skinks seem to target mostly reptiles as potential recruits.
  • Faux Affably Evil: As he enjoys his status as Scar's second in command, Ushari's politeness increasingly fades to the point that it is only a sham.
  • Freudian Excuse: His reasons for turning to evil are that he's tired of bad things happening to him whenever the Lion Guard is near and he wants the Pride Lands to respect him.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Starts out as your average, albeit slightly antagonistic cobra, but eventually becomes one of the chief villains of the series who helps bring back Scar himself.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: We hear him hitting the lava, but we don't see it because it is blocked by all the steam the volcano is creating.
  • Hypocrite: For all his expectations that reptiles will rule the Pride Lands, he makes it clear that the only reptiles who matter are the ones who side with him.
  • Jack of All Stats: Ushari's skills are average, yet as moderately effective as the ground animals who specialize in each specific skill—strength (crocodiles), speed (the skinks), stealth (skinks and Sumu), and deadly poison (Sumu).
  • Join or Die: Every and any reptile is a potential asset for him, so he will seek that reptile. If a reptile does not join the Army of Scar and has a skill that can be used against them, they must be captured and/or terminated.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: He starts off as a fairly neutral cobra, but then sides with Janja to bring back Scar and get rid of the Lion Guard, even agreeing to kill other important Pridelanders including Simba.
  • Karmic Death: His Face–Heel Turn ultimately results in him meeting his doom via falling into Scar's volcano.
  • Kick the Dog: He had been willing to go with Scar's plans to kill the Guard, their friends and family, and many important figures in the Pridelands so that he could gain power and respect.
  • Killed Off for Real: In "Battle For the Pride Lands", he falls into the volcano and is burned to death.
  • Knight of Cerebus: He causes the series to become much darker by bringing Scar back from the dead. He is also the first villain in a Disney Junior show to be explicitly killed.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Being true to the snake stereotype, he would manipulate either innocent characters or potential recruits for the benefit of the evil Outlanders.
    • This is also how he manages to get Makini to ask about summoning evil spirits, as he makes it look like he and Kion are old friends and that they go back a long ways when he reveals his knowledge of Kion's ability to speak to Mufasa.
  • Meaningful Name: "Ushari" means "aggression" in Swahili, except he's not that aggressive. Right up until the second season that is.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: He was sick of bad things happening to him whenever the Lion Guard were around, so he sided with Janja's clan, and later, Scar.
  • More than Mind Control: Although the Pride Lands assumes that cobra venom sends people insane, the actual evidence in the show itself indicates that the worst it does is bring out people's darker instincts and leaves bite victims still able to understand right and wrong.
  • The Mole: While he now works for Scar, Ushari usually lives in the Pride Lands whenever there is a potential recruit, and very frequently stays in the Pridelands to give Scar information that his skinks cannot give them without being seen. As a result, Ushari takes great care to avoid being seen with Janja until "The Scorpion's Sting", when he reveals his allegiance to Scar to the Lion Guard.
  • Mouth of Sauron: Ushari usually speaks on behalf of Scar's spirit, and more, such as relaying the plans, scouting activity in the Pride Lands, and seeking potential recruits.
  • Mythology Gag: His role in Season 2, being the snake sidekick to Scar, is derived from early concepts of the original movie in which Scar would've had a snake (albeit a python rather than a cobra) as a comic relief sidekick.
  • Necromancer: Ushari appears to be some kind of necromancer, and it was his idea to use Makini's staff combined with Kion roaring at the volcano in anger to summon Scar's spirit back from the dead.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: He inflicts the wound that results in Kion going through a Sanity Slippage, his final attack nearly gets Bunga killed, and his own death badly damages Ono's vision enough that he has to be replaced with Anga.
  • Poisonous Person: Or more accurately venom, as he's a cobra and all. However, he will rarely if ever, use this ability on the heroes, let alone take them on. Goes with Poison Is Evil beginning in "The Rise of Scar", and in "The Scorpion's Sting" he seemingly has the intention of using this on the Guard, finally doing so on Kion in the Season 3 premiere.
  • Rage Breaking Point: In "The Rise of Scar", he finally gets fed up with the Lion Guard after putting up with their antics for so long, to the point of allying with Janja's clan to stop them once and for all. The Lion Guard finally defeating Scar drives him to a violent fury which is proven fatal.
  • Red Is Violent: He has red scales and is antagonistic.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent:
    • The show seems to treat him somewhat unfairly due to his being a snake (and a venomous species, at that). Most egregious is the episode in which Bunga literally beats him up and steals his rightful prey despite the fact that snakes, like lions or cheetahs, need to eat other animals in order to survive. So much for the Circle of Life philosophy. Although this may be less about the Circle of Life and more because of natural animosity between their species.
    • Averted in the following episode, "Bunga the Wise" and "Kupatana Celebration". In the former, the guard visits his hole to make sure he and his buddies aren't stuck in the mud and in the latter he's at the Kupatana Celebration alongside all the other Pride Land animals with no stigma or conflict towards him at all. Although in the former the gang aren't enthusiastic about checking on them (probably because they're venomous). In "The Lost Gorillas", when Majinuni and Haififu mistake him for a stick and throw him into a baobab tree, Kion shows major concern for him and scolds the two for it.
  • Sanity Slippage:
    • All cobra venom can do this, which mandates that Kion go to the Tree of Life in order to prevent from being driven insane.
    • He himself is finally driven to madness after all of his plans are ruined by Kion destroying Scar once and for all, making a furious attempt to kill the lion with his venom only for Bunga to stop him.
  • Sadist: After Scar gets resurrected, he takes utter glee in many of Scar's plans to destroy the Pride Lands, even if they result in large death tolls.
  • Self-Disposing Villain: Ushari is one of two antagonists who know how to contact Scar's ghost and could potentially bring him back, starting the Season 2 arc all over again, after the Guard finally vanquish him. And unlike Janja, who's pulled a Heel–Face Turn by the Season 3 premiere, Ushari has little to no reason not to try to do that out of spite or obsession, so he meets his end shortly after Scar's second death, diving into a pool of lava in a failed attempt at killing Kion, taking his necromancer secrets to the grave with him.
  • Shout-Out: His actions of poisoning the hero in order to make them similar to themselves is likely a reference to the Joker in Batman: Arkham City. Though while Batman was cured for the time being until he was showing signs of becoming the Clown Prince of Crime himself by the time of Arkham Knight, Kion manages to get cured despite his struggles.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: Somewhat subverted. He does hate Bunga and he is shown to be a menacing presence, but it doesn't seem like he has any villainous pretensions, being mostly interested in being left alone to eat and sleep like any other snake. Played straight starting in "The Rise of Scar" where he pulls a Face–Heel Turn and works with Janja's clan to find a way to communicate with Scar, to whom he becomes his second-in-command. Still, he's more sinister than Kaa, and to a lesser extent, Sir Hiss.
  • Somewhere, a Herpetologist Is Crying:
    • Ushari is described by Ono as an Egyptian cobra (Naja haje), and for his first few appearances he has the markings of one. But later on, he's shown to have the external hood markings of a spectacled cobra (Naja naja), which only occurs in India and neighboring countries. This is an exceedingly common trope with cobra species in media, on the level of All Animals Are Dogs. For that matter, he also has the purplish throat-band of a red spitting cobra (Naja pallida).
    • At one point Ushari coils around Bunga to restrain him. Very few venomous snakes do this, and cobras are not among them.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He directly gives Kion his scar, and Bunga's attempt to stop him from biting Kion again results in Ono getting his vision seriously damaged. Furthermore, the fact that his venom threatens to drive Kion insane makes him directly responsible for Kion having to go to the Tree of Life, which makes him directly responsible for the Lion Guard not returning in time for the latter half of Simba's Pride, if they return at all.
  • Sssssnake Talk: "Sssssay, that was my lunch!"
  • This Cannot Be!: This is his reaction to Kion summoning rain to destroy Scar in the Season 3 premiere.
    Ushari: "What? Scar's plan failed?"
  • Undying Loyalty: To Scar. All the way to his final breath.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Kion tells Bunga to leave Ushari alone in one episode, and repeatedly checks on the cobra. Ushari schemes with Janja to overthrow Kion by bringing back Scar by having Kiara kidnapped in response.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After Scar is finally destroyed, Ushari completely flips out and makes an attempt to kill Kion in revenge, only for Bunga to stop him.
Ushari: Sssstop! You can't destroy him!
  • Visual Pun: Ushari turns against the Pridelanders by siding with Janja's clan to bring back Scar, making him a literal snake in the grass.
  • Wise Serpent: He is the most intelligent and competent of Scar's army.

A skink who is friends with Ushari, and serves as his spy.

  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: No African species of skink in real life is colored like she is, or her fellow skinks are.
  • Ambiguous Situation: After the destruction of Scar and the death of Ushari, her gang's fate is unknown.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She would act friendly to the good guys as a benefit to the evil Outlanders.
  • Determinator: Despite her size, she's willing to throw her entire weight in combat against the heroes, who are so much bigger than she is.
  • Evil Minions: She and her fellow skinks serve this role, usually acting as spies or messengers between factions loyal to Scar.
  • Evil Slinks: The tone of her voice is rather suggestive, and she is quite sneaky to fit with her role as a spy. She targets those who are ambitious, or preys on other animals' insecurities to recruit them.
  • Faux Affably Evil: In "Swept Away", she and the other skinks act like friends to Beshte, so they could lure him into a trap devised by the hyenas. She uses this again in "The Little Guy" to trick Hodari into joining Kiburi's float.
  • Informed Species: She's clearly a skink, but what kind? Her red skin suggests she could be a fire skink, but she lacks most other colors and patterns of one (particularly the golden back and horizontal black stripes).
  • Karma Houdini: Like with Mzingo, her role as spy means she doesn't have to get in the action, and therefore she doesn't suffer the consequences.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: She and her fellow skinks finally get a taste of Kion's Roar in "The Scorpion's Sting". In the Season 3 premiere, they all get knocked out by the Guard in a Curb-Stomp Battle.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: We see Shupavu at her most threatening in "Undercover Kinyonga", where she and her skinks now get to take on an enemy about their size.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: She's the first villain in the show who is a lizard. Cheezi and Chungu are even creeped out her and the other skinks' presence.
  • Smug Snake: Or rather skink. In "Undercover Kinyonga", she is confident that Kinyonga would be no match for her and her skinks when they outnumber her, but the chameleon is proven to be more clever and steathful than they are. And by the time they finally corner Kinyonga, the Lion Guard scare them off with an ambush.

A yellow skink who is a member of Shupavu's group.

  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Njano may seem kooky, but he has more than once proven to be crafty and successful as a spy.
  • Determinator: He's more than willing to not let size stop him from throwing his entire weight at bigger foes.
  • Evil Slinks: He helps out Shupavu in spying on the Pridelanders and recruiting other animals. He doesn't really look evil, but that fits in with his devious nature.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Just like Shupavu, he would act friendly to others if it would benefit to Scar's legion.
  • Informed Species: He at best resembles a rainbow mabuya, but he lacks other characteristics of one such as the blue tail (though his legs are blue instead).
  • Karma Houdini: The same case with Shupavu. And like Shupavu, this expires in "The Scorpion's Sting" and "Battle For the Pride Lands".
  • The Lancer: Appears to be this for Shupavu.
  • Maniac Tongue: His blue tongue is always sticking out.
  • Meaningful Name: Njano means "yellow" in Swahili.

    Kenge

A ferocious rock monitor with a paralyzing bite who is an acquaintance of Ushari.

  • Animals Not to Scale: It is no wonder why he takes pride in his size. He's shown to be bigger than a rock monitor or even a Nile monitor, and one interview states he's big as a crocodile. His appearance in "The Scorpion's Sting" confirms it.
  • Berserk Button: Don't call him a little lizard. Or use the word "little" within his hearing range, as it implies the former. Also, don't order him around, or question his ability to lead.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Kenge means "monitor lizard" in Swahili.
  • The Dreaded: Out of Ushari's acquaintances, Kenge is the most feared because of both his venom and his temper.
  • Evil Sounds Raspy: He speaks with a growling rasp.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: It doesn't take a lot to make him angry, and calling him little will drive him into Unstoppable Rage. This can be used against him, as Bunga demonstrates when he enrages him enough to lure him into biting Janja and his henchmen.
  • Humanlike Foot Anatomy: Inverted, he has digitigrade legs even though real lizards have plantigrade legs.
  • Malicious Monitor Lizard: He's scary, bad-tempered (especially if you call him a little lizard), and has a venomous bite.
  • Poisonous Person: Has a venomous bite (like monitor lizards in real life) which can temporarily paralyze his victims. If that doesn't work, his bite can still hurt, so he will eat his victim instead.
  • Red Baron: "Big, Bad Kenge" and "Biggest Lizard in the Outlands"
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: A monitor lizard with a bad attitude. He becomes more abhorrent when livid, namely when he's called little.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: According to Ford Riley, he apparently left Scar's army after being hit by Kion's roar one too many times. Probably the smartest thing he could have done.
  • Sssssnake Talk: Averted, except on one occasion:
Kenge: [Bunga] thinks he's brave enough to fight Kenge, biggesssst lizard in the Outlandssss!
  • Tail Slap: He sometimes attempts to attack his enemies with his long tail. This is Truth in Television, as monitor lizards possess powerful tails which they use to whip their attackers and prey when needed.
  • Tranquil Fury: For the most part he has a rather clamorous tone. When Bunga tells him he's not so scary nor big right to his face, however, he calmly and furiously asks him "What did you just say?".
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Kenge is all about his sheer strength, toughness, and strong, paralyzing bite that make him the most feared being in the Pridelands. However, his skill and finesse is rather lacking, which becomes problematic when facing Bunga.
  • Unstoppable Rage: A good reason why Ushari warns not to call him little. He goes into a mad frenzy attempting to attack his offender, to the point where he recklessly bites his allies.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Besides biting the Lion Guard so he can paralyze them with his venom, he also attempts to attack Makini when she throws a melon at his head so he can miss Bunga and bite Janja instead.

Jackals

    Reirei

Voiced in English by: Ana Gasteyer
Voiced in Latin American Spansih by: Lourdes Arruti

A clever and scheming black-backed jackal who wreaks havoc in the Pride Lands.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She pretends to be sweet and innocent so she and her family can steal from other animals. Other times she would act friendly to fool her prey.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She does have her moment of making sassy remarks, which goes along well with her usage of Exact Words.
  • Deep South: She is essentially every stereotype about rednecks rolled into one character.
  • Dirty Coward: Living up to her species' stereotype, she will either try to sweet-talk her way out or flee when faced with a superior opponent.
  • Dope Slap: Tends to slap or kick Goigoi to wake him up or prevent him from ruining her plans.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite her sadistic and deceptive nature, she clearly cares about her family.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Despite working for scar (and being a deceptive sadist), she still think Jasiri is a better ruler of the Outlands than Scar, implying that even she doesn't like the way Scar ran things.
  • Evil Matriarch: She's a con artist who teaches her kids to follow her example.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Said by herself in "Jackal Style":
Reirei: And though we seem quite pleasant, our niceness is just a show!
  • Foil: She initially appears to be one to Zira, in that both are manipulative matriarchs who use their children to advance their own goals, but Reirei is shown to have redeemable traits and most of her actions seem to be motivated by a desire to survive, along with being a genuinely caring mother to her children, something Zira clearly lacks. Once she joins Scar's army, however and her younger children are no longer present, she begins to show a sadistic and violent side.
  • The Family That Slays Together: She joins Goigoi and her kids in attacking the Kupatana celebration.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She and the other jackals reform after Scar's defeat, deciding that life in the Outlands might be better with Jasiri in charge.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: Her initial appearances show her as a caring mother who does what she does to survive albeit not without some vicious moments. Once she joins Scar's army, she begins to really revel in violence and death.
  • Kick the Dog: She gets a lot more sadistic and violent once she joins Scar's army.
  • Kick Chick: Her first appearance shows that she's fond of waking up Goigoi with a kick of her hind leg whenever he falls asleep. By her second appearance, it's shown that her kicks are also her preferred method of silencing Goigoi when he speaks out of turn (such as nearly telling their prey that they're going to eat them rather than trying to win their trust).
  • Know When to Fold Them: She's quick to give up and run away when confronted with a superior enemy.
  • Mama Bear: She is shown to be genuinely protective of her children to the point she will immediately bail on a scam if the kids are put in reasonable danger.
  • Meaningful Name: Reirei is Swahili for "flattering", a reference to her being a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Despite being less bulkier than her mate, Reirei has significant lower body strength, as she can easily kick the more muscular Goigoi several feet away from her in spite of her lighter frame.
  • Smug Snake: Highly confident and full of herself when things are going her way. But the second the situation turns against her, she's quick to shamelessly beg for mercy.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: In Season 2 with Janja. She clearly doesn't like working with him and they are usually seen trading barbs with each other.
  • Villain Song: "Jackal Style", "We'll Make You A Meal", and "We're the Smartest".
  • Villainous Glutton: She aims to hunt and eat the other animals at the Kupatana Celebration, despite predators are supposed to stand peacefully with everyone else there (even Makuu is respectful of the event). Before the celebration, she and her family spend much of their time stealing food from the other animals. In "Too Many Termites", she and Goigoi attempted to eat every single one of the six aardwolves, which would be more than enough for them and their pups. Like Janja and his clan, she and her pack would invade the Pride Lands (where jackals are not allowed) to gain a meal.
  • Women Are Wiser: She is both the matriarch of her pack and the brains of the operation.

Reirei's mate who wreaks havoc in the Pride Lands.

  • Bumbling Dad: He's less competent than his mate.
  • Butt-Monkey: Seems to take this role, as whenever something happens to him, it is always for comedy.
  • Character Catchphrase: He often says "Whatever you say, dear" in response to Reirei telling him something.
  • Dirty Coward: Probably more so than his wife, whom he will put under the bus if he gets in trouble with the Guard.
  • Dogs Are Dumb: He's not the brightest jackal in the pack.
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: Is completely OK with Reirei repeatedly kicking and slapping him.
  • Dumb Muscle: He's mostly working as his mate's muscle.
  • The Dreaded: Despite his laziness, he is still feared enough by the Pride Lands' inhabitants that Taama can use his voice to scare them off so he can take their food.
  • Ear Notch: Has several on both ears.
  • The Family That Slays Together: He joins Reirei and his kids in attacking the Kupatana celebration.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He and the other jackals reform after Scar's defeat.
  • Henpecked Husband: Lets his wife push and order him around, to the point his Catchphrase is "Whatever you say, dear."
  • Meaningful Name: "Goigoi" means "lazy" or "weak" in Swahili.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: Subverted in that he's quite bulky for a jackal, but he's quite weak in performance. His mate can easily kick him away from him with one leg, and even Bunga had him trying to run away when he grabbed him by the tail in spite of the honey badger being smaller than him.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: There are instances where he can be a genuine threat, such as when he nearly killed Dhahabu.
  • Sleepy Head: He seems to spend most of his time asleep. This fades in Season 2 where he is still shown to be incompetent, but no longer lazy.
  • Trampled Underfoot: He gets the stuffing kicked out of him by Starehehe and Rana.
  • Villain Song: "We'll Make You a Meal"
  • Villainous Glutton: Goes along with his wife's plan to eat the other animals during in the Kupatana Celebration, as well as stealing food from the Pride Landers prior to the celebration (he also eats a fruit belonging to the aardvarks).

A little jackal pup who is Reirei's son of the Jackal family.

  • Adorable Evil Minions: He and all his siblings assist their parents in their schemes. However, they still look like adorable little pup... And they use their innocent appearance to fool others.
  • The Bus Came Back: He and the other jackal pups make a return in the Season 3 premiere, helping out their parents fight the Pridelanders.
  • Deliberately Cute Child: Going by his mom's teachings, he acts like a cute and innocent puppy to win an animal over. Then he strikes.
  • Enfante Terrible: He can turn vicious when he's hunting, and in "Babysitter Bunga" he threatens Hamu once his charade is exposed. In "Battle for the Pride Lands", he and his siblings try pushing large rocks onto the Pridelanders.
  • The Family That Slays Together: He and his siblings join their parents in attacking the Kupatana celebration.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: He can be distinguished from his siblings by his blue eyes, and the dark brown spots on his front legs.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: There's at least 15 of them.
  • Meaningful Name: "Dogo" means "small" in Swahili. It also, coincidentally, contains the word "dog"—fitting for a canid.
  • Morality Pet: Given that Reirei only really started getting evil after she joined up with Scar, and Dogo is not among them, it indicates that Dogo, and his siblings tone down their mother's more violent side. But alas, it turns out he and his young siblings were indeed still helping their parents after they joined Scar.
  • Not Allowed to Grow Up: His brief appearance in the Season 3 premiere shows him and his siblings looking pretty much the same, even though all the other kid characters have already started maturing.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: He's a cute jackal pup.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: He hasn't appeared at all ever since "Babysitter Bunga", with only Reirei, Goigoi and some of the older adult jackals being present in Scar's army. Until the Season 3 premiere, that is.
  • Token Good Teammate: Subverted. He shows a little bit of remorse when his family moves into the Pride Lands, and it looks for a moment like he's being set up as this trope. Then he goes along with his family's schemes without a word of complaint or objection, and seems just as delighted with his mother's plan as the rest of his family. "Babysitter Bunga" shows he has a rather ferocious disposition masked by his cute appearance. When he finally returns in "Battle For the Pride Lands", he is shown trying to crush the Pridelanders with a rockslide under his mother's orders.
  • Uniformity Exception: Unlike the other pups his age, Dogo has spots on his arms and blue eyes.
  • Villain Song: "Jackal Style"

Crocodiles

    Kiburi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kiburi.png
Voiced by: Common

An arrogant, ruthless Nile crocodile who was a member of Makuu's float, until he loses a mashidano with Makuu and is banished into the Outlands for a failed attempt at taking out Simba.

  • Ambition Is Evil: What started out as a silly, petty disagreement with Makuu turned into a desire to seek greater power after the Skinks suggested it. This resulted in Kiburi discarding any sense of honor he might have had, going as far cheating by attacking Simba. When that didn't work, he joins Scar's Legion of Doom out of dominance over other Pride landers, just like the other, like-minded animals.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Kiburi thinks far more of himself than he actually is. He lacks Makuu's pragmatism and strength, or the brains of Scar or Ushari. Despite his ambition to kill Simba and Makuu and take over the Pride Lands, he's easily misled by Ushari, fails to poise a serious challenge to Makuu during their mashindano, and is forced to join up under Scar's leadership.
  • The Brute: Of the legion of evil Outlanders. He's the most physically imposing due to being a crocodile and also leads a few other loyal crocodiles. He also possesses little in the way of smarts, leaving him to only contribute brute strength to Scar's group.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Instead of focusing on defeating Makuu in the Mashindano, he cheats by having three crocodiles assassinate Simba during the whole thing, hoping he will come on top after that. Once that fails, not only are Simba and Kion furious but Makuu is absolutely disgusted that he disowns Kiburi and the three other crocs without a word.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: Kiburi has distinctive dark Facial Markings around his eyes and is the most evil crocodile.
  • Dirty Coward: Since he was unable to overpower Makuu during their mashindano, Kiburi resorts to attacking him when he's injured and tries to beat him to death. Fortunately, Makuu having a smart guy like Hodari mitigated this unfair disadvantage. It's even lampshaded by Makuu at the beginning of their fight.
Makuu: Kiburi. Only brave enough to challenge me when I'm hurt?
  • Evil Counterpart: He is this to Makuu, after forming his own crocodile float in the Outlands. Unlike Makuu, Kiburi is an Ungrateful Bastard who is egotistical to the point of being foolhardy and lacks common sense in general.
  • The Exile: After losing a mashindano with Makuu, not only are he and his followers are banished from the float but they're also outright banished into the Outlands for attempting to assassinate Simba. Now, he's a welcome addition to Scar's inner circle.
  • False Friend: In "The Little Guy", Kiburi and his float take advantage of a naive Hodari after he is rejected by Makuu.
  • Foil: To Season 1 Makuu, being an arrogant crocodile who believes violence is the only way to solve problems and dislikes compromising with other animals claiming it's not the "crocodile way". Kiburi also strongly opposes Makuu's authority to the point of challenging him to a mashindano, like Makuu did with Pua. However, he's shown to be more power-hungry and ambitious than Makuu, as he tried to take over the float and the Pridelands.
  • Green and Mean: A villainous crocodile with green skin.
  • Hazy-Feel Turn: After Scar is defeated, Kiburi declares he and his crocs will look out for themselves rather than swearing loyalty to Jasiri.
  • It's Personal: He has a grudge against Makuu for beating him in a mashindano and banishing him.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: We are introduced to him as a Jerkass not unlike Makuu before his Heel–Face Turn. He then agrees with Ushari to get rid of Simba, and eventually joins Scar's Legion of Doom after being banished for his crime.
  • Kick the Dog: When Hodari scolds him for fighting Makuu without challenging him to a mashindano first, Kiburi scoffs at the small lizard before batting him away into a tree with his tail. This causes Hodari to realize Kiburi is evil, and even Makuu (who initially laughed off Hodari's request in joining his float) calls Kiburi out on it.
  • The Kingslayer: Or rather tried to be one. He agrees to have Simba killed so he and the other crocs could rule the Pride Lands, and he sends his three followers to ambush Simba while everyone is distracted by the mashindano. Fortunately, the Guard notices and stops his followers before they could even touch the king, which leads to all four crocs getting banished into the Outlands.
  • Knight of Cerebus: He and his followers are the first villains in the show to outright attempt to kill Simba himself, and they came close to killing Makuu and his float in their second appearance.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Kiburi gives Hodari a painful-looking tail-slap after betraying him. Hodari repays him in full minutes later by distracting him and telling Makuu how he can end their croc fight with another powerful tail-whip.
  • Meaningful Name: Kiburi means "pride" in Swahili, fitting for an arrogant croc like him.
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile: An even more antagonistic crocodile than Makuu. In fact, he and his lackeys are the first crocs in the show to be outright evil.
  • Remember the New Guy?: It's rather ambiguous how long Kiburi and his followers had been in Makuu's float, given they only made their first appearance in "The Rise of Scar".
  • Rival Turned Evil: He goes from an upstart challenging Makuu's authority over something really silly and petty to a full-blown villain aiming for the downfall of the Lion Guard and the Pride Lands.
  • Somewhere, a Herpetologist Is Crying: Averted. Unlike Makuu he has interlocking teeth like a real crocodile, as does his three followers. Although concept art showed he initially had an overbite until that was fixed.
  • The Starscream: Of Makuu's float, but once he thinks there's a bigger prize, he doesn't have to worry about beating Makuu, because he assumes the entire Pride Lands will still be his as he tries to have Simba himself killed.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Kiburi told Tamka and Nduli at least once that they had fish for brains. They try to grasp what that even means, only to crave for fish later on.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Complains about the watering hole Makuu and Simba picked for the crocs to spend during the dry season despite it being the most suitable for them and guaranteeing for their survival at least, going as far as trying to get rid of both the crocodile leader and the king.
  • The Usurper: For Makuu and then Simba himself. Although he fails to get rid of both.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Kiburi menaces a group of an impalas to steal their watering hole and singles out their calf to make an example of, with the implication that he's either going to maim it or kill it. Kion steps in to stop him, so Kiburi targets him instead, trying to pin the cub down to attack him.

Nduli
Voiced by: Nolan North (Tamka) and Jorge Diaz (Nduli)

Two crocodiles who are Kiburi's followers.

  • Big Guy, Little Guy: Tamka is big and bulky while Nduli is small and slender.
  • Dumb Muscle: Both of them aren't very bright. Tamka even admits they aren't smart.
  • Fat Bastard: Tamka.
  • Fish Eyes: Nduli has these.
  • Foil: To Cheezi and Chungu. Both are main lackeys of a primary antagonist and have opposing builds. Additionally, Nduli has unfocused eyes much like Cheezi.
  • Green and Mean: They both have green skin.
  • Large Ham: Tamka goes all over-dramatic when he pretends to be defeated by Hodari in the crocodile initiation spar, under Kiburi's orders.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: Subverted by Tamka, who has a muscular build but often gets easily knocked out by Kion.
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile: Both are villainous crocodiles working under Kiburi.
  • Number Two: Tamka appears to be this for Kiburi.

    Sumu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sumu_img1.png
Voiced by: Ford Riley

A dark scorpion with a highly deadly venom, who serves as Scar's most dangerous assassin.

  • Dark Is Evil: He's a black scorpion.
  • Four-Legged Insect: As an arachnid rather than an insect, he should have eight legs. Instead he's drawn with six. note
  • Furry Confusion: Unlike the other invertebrates in the series, Sumu is both sapient and able to speak.
  • Karma Houdini: He never faces punishment for stinging Simba.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Introduced in the series' darkest episode to date, and very nearly kills Simba. There is only one comedic moment revolving around him (and that's more focused on Janja to begin with); he's otherwise a dead serious threat. He even crashes the episode's bouncy, fun song.
  • Meaningful Name: Sumu means "poison" in Swahili.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Sumu is quick, stealthful, and wastes no time trying to poison Simba and making his getaway.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: His venom is deadly enough to immediately cause Simba to collapse and fall to near-death.
  • Poisonous Person: Being a scorpion, he has a venomous stinger. And said venom is lethal.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Sumu has blood-red eyes.
  • Scary Scorpions: An evil scorpion armed with deadly venom in his stinger.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: He has a soft, whispery voice.
  • Somewhere, an Entomologist Is Crying: Besides having only six legs instead of eight, he has only four eyes arranged like a spider's. His black color and massive pincers suggest that he's an emperor scorpion, but emperor scorpions have very weak venom.
  • Whatever Happened to the Mouse?: He is never seen again after completing his task and hearing Scar's plan to ambush the Lion Guard. He doesn't even take part in said ambush.
