A small shark with a big heart, Gura has been around for a while. She's a bit of a prankster, usually pranking her genmates during collabs, and is also quite boneheaded at times, but she's also very emotional and wears her heart on her sleeve. She excels at rhythm games, usually does karaoke streams, and is particularly fond of horror games.

Associated characters: JEnMa-chan note  (manager), Scout from Belt-Buckle (Hunter: The Vigil character)

    A-E
  • The Ace: Gura is incredibly skilled at rhythm games and is able to clear incredibly difficult songs with little trouble. A good example of her skill can be seen in a stream where she challenged only Extreme+ levels of Project Diva: Mega Mix while being sleep deprived and adjusting to a different controller scheme than she's used to, but managed to beat all challenges while scoring over a-hundred-percent in some of them. The only game to date that's put a dent in her winning streak was DJMAX Respect, where she largely avoided Maximum difficulty songs or button modes other than 4B during her playthrough. She also struggled with Friday Night Funkin', with her first stream having her road-blocked by invokedM.I.L.F. in Week 5 and her second stream by Guns in Week 7. But when someone told her she could change the direction the arrows move (default is bottom to top, the game allows top to bottom), she proceeded to utterly dominate Week 7.
  • Acrophobic Bird: If the joke about her needing floaties is true, at least. This can be seen as (likely accidental) Fridge Brilliance - sharks have no swim bladder, so in a constrained space without enough room to swim, they could indeed sink to the bottom.
  • A-Cup Angst: Downplayed Trope, as Gura takes this much better than say, Rushia or Ollie. For all her Petite Pride about being "hydrodynamic" and taking jabs aimed at her small figure with good humor, however, she still shows sign of this trope from time to time.
    • While she does get a bit irritated sometimes, it's not so much as her getting upset about her flatness, but more because people keep feeling the need to bring it up. As long as her chat is not being annoying about it, she is more than willing to laugh it off and even make flat jokes about herself from time to time.
    • After the Council's character designs were revealed, Gura was quick to bemoan how unfair it is that all five of them, including Baelz, are so much more well-endowed than she is.
    • During her Dead by Daylight collab with Anya, Gura was visibly annoyed that for all the similarities in their visual designs, their chest sizes is the one difference.
    • When asked by Calli what her three sizes are, Gura's reply was "plywood".
    • During a stream, while discussing flexibility, she points out that it must be dificult for Kronii to touch her own toes since there are "something big" on the way. Kronii response was, under this logic, it must be easy for Gura sinse there is NOTHING on her way... Gura ended up muttering "ok, that backfired a little..."
    • Following the Summer 2023 HoloSplash event, Gura was mortified about having to be in a swimsuit alongside the other idols given her lack of... assets... compared to most of them, grumbling how unfair it is that even Ina has her beat in the curves department.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Assuming she is using the Japanese name order (meaning Gawr is her family name and Gura is her given name), she is possibly an example of this. When asked what type of shark she is, she says she is a Gura shark. Considering that she has stated she is a shark-human hybrid, it could very well be the real name for her species.
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • She was the first to refer to Amelia as 'Ame', something that the rest of her generation - and the Hololive fandom as a whole - later latched on to.
    • Had dubbed her scavenger bots in Dead Space 3 as 'Chumbot' as a clever pun of her official fanbase's name.
    • She thinks that "Chumbies" is a cuter nickname for her fanbase than "Chumbuds".
  • All Gravity Is the Same: Averted Trope. She claims to have "put on a lot of muscle" since coming up on land, due to the increased gravity.
  • Alliterative Name: Gawr Gura
  • Ancient Grome: What little she has mentioned of Atlantean culture paints it as such. She has said that they spoke Ancient Greek and they had arenas like Roman amphitheaters where they would publicly execute criminals by feeding them to wild animals (something the Romans sometimes did). The name Gura is derived from a Latin word, and she often invokes Poseidon/Neptune. Her party outfit is based on Ancient Greek and Roman clothing, and she has said that this was at her request, as Nachoneko's initial idea was a more standard dress.
  • Animal Motifs:
  • Artistic License – Biology:
    • Discussed. When trying to add a tail to shark hat house, she builds the fin horizontally to which chat immediately tries to tell her that's what a whale's tail looks like and sharks have vertical tails. Upon finally understanding what chat meant, she still ponders how it looks just like her tail and then wonders if she's actually adopted.
    • Gura has given some quite inconsistent accounts on just how her species reproduces. A few occasions has Gura stating she is a live-birth shark who ate her siblings in the womb. During a Monster Hunter collab with Ina, Gura claims she lays eggs. Then her bathtub Q&A stream, Gura claimed to have been born from an egg ("I came from an egg, you see"), right after spending two minutes talking about her belly button, which is something only mammals should possess due to the umbilical cord note . The true nature of Gura's birth remains wholly a mystery. Her New Year kimono stream seems to have finally put the question to rest by showing Gura being born/reborn from a shark egg sac.
  • Audience Surrogate: She uses shrimps to represent her fans, often having a shrimp on stream with her. She finally gained an official one for her New Year kimono outfit, dubbed Ebi-chan (drawn by herself).
  • Ax-Crazy: Played for laughs. During a Dead by Daylight stream where she had placed a bet with chat where the stakes of losing as the killer was an embarrassing tweet, Gura became far more obsessively focused on winning than usual, gaining Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises while saying yandere-like dialogue as she hunted each survivor.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Given her short stature and her tendency to play up Deliberately Cute Child, she is often regarded as the "baby shark" of her gen. Many girls throughout Hololive dote on her for how cute she is.
  • Baby Talk: Has done this on quite a few occasions usually to play up being a Deliberately Cute Child. It is not to be confused with UwU, however, which is a matter of Serious Business.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Floaties. Originally mentioned during the first collaboration by Amelia to be a rumor that she can't swim without them despite being a shark. It has since become a sour point for her, leading to annoyed retorts when it's brought up during streams.
    • With her second design, she doesn't at all take it well if someone says she's not a real cat, to the point where she threatens to pee on Kiara's bed.
    • She's fine with people casting aspersions on her gaming prowess and does it herself often, but not if it's in regards to her rhythm-gaming skills. When she was called a noob during a Project Diva: Mega Mix stream, she paused her gameplay to call out that particular commenter.
Gura: I'll have you know that I have more hours on this game than you have on this planet.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: While typically one to take humiliating things that happened to her in stride and laugh off jabs at her, if her words during the HoloJP/IN/EN collab of Among Us are any indication she can be quite scary if she really gets pissed. She in particular was going to kill Watson first if she got Imposter. Her sudden serious demeanour even scared chat, especially with her ominous humming later on.
  • Big Eater: She loves food (especially "surface-dweller" food), and has said that her worst fear is her stomach grumbling in the middle of a stream. Which it has, several times in fact. Interestingly later streams suggest while she's obsessed with food, she doesn't actually eat that much a time.
  • Big Sister Instinct: On the receiving end. Because of her short stature and general cuteness, she manages to induce this in several Japanese senpais despite the language barrier. Matsuri in particular outright says she wants to protect Gura.
  • Birds of a Feather: To Mumei, with many noticing just how similar the two girls are. Both of them started off as The Cutie of their generation, before showing off a Beware the Nice Ones side of less Seuss behavior. Both also have tendencies of being airheaded and forgetful, with many strange living habits. It’s even to the point where their voices sound similar and they can impersonate one another.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: Like a real shark, Gura has gills. The bizarre part is that they are located on her chest, specifically around her ribcage, note  instead of around her throat.
  • Black Comedy: The "Gawr Gura - Shark'd" animation features Gura learning of Hololive by seeing a flyer for it on a message board, along with various other notices including a missing poster for Olivia. It was only upon reading the YouTube comments for the video after it debuted that Gura realized just how dark that was.
  • Black Comedy Cannibalism: Makes frequent references to the fact that some species of shark have the unborn babies cannibalize their siblings while still in the mother's womb and has claimed on several occasions that it's true for her kind.
Gura: [tagline for her first Bully episode] i've eaten womblings tougher than u!
  • Bowdlerize:
    • Gura self-censors some lewd lyrics during a performance of "The Lazy Song."
Gura: Tomorrow I'll wake up, do some P90X. Meet a really nice girl, have some really nice... tacos.
    • This was immediately subverted with her follow-up song in the same stream, "Say So" by Doja Cat interlaced with Japanese lyrics. She made it a point to specifically say "Ass and titties" at the end of the rap portion.
  • Brainless Beauty: Although Gura is visually appealing and friendly, she doesn't excel academically or intellectually in certain areas. This has led to her fans giving her the Affectionate Nickname "dum shark".
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Much more subtle than other kusogakis in Hololive. While Gura lacks the Spoiled Brat side, she does take great enjoyment in pranking and bullying other Holo members.
  • Breakout Character:
    • As the most popular talent of Hololive (having become the most subscribed Hololive channel, a mere 2 months after her debut), Gura was able to enjoy her first solo sponsorship deal for BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!, where she did a collab stream of her playing the game and showing off her famed rhythm game skills. This collab stream was specifically advertised in-game as well as a special limited-edition Gura themed item available to commemorate the collab. Gura herself was absolutely elated, because she's been an avid player of the game since long before she joined Hololive.
    • In December 2021, Gura was included as part of the Groove Coaster collab with hololive, where Gura was featured as an in-game navigator with a fully voiced avatar along with earphones themed after her. The only other hololive girl to be included at time was Sora. While subsequent updates have added more girls, Gura is still notable for being among the first two girls to be added, as well as the first EN girl.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Gura simply cannot resist teasing Polka about her "Poltato PC". After Polka gets mad and attacks Gura with flaming arrows, Gura cannot stop herself from making fun of Polka.
  • The Cameo: Briefly shows up on a giant screen in Taco Bell's Fry Force - Nacho Fries commercial.
  • Canis Latinicus: After continuing to suffer with wifi issues, during a stream of Apotheon, PNG Gura labels herself as "Flatimus Maximus."
  • Carnivore Confusion: During Gura and Amelia's visit to the JP Minecraft server, Moona tricked Gura into entering a hot tub before tossing several carrots in, joking that she wanted to turn Gura into shark soup. Later, she was surprised to learn that shark meat is considered a delicacy in Iceland.
Gura: We're staying out of Iceland for now!
  • Cartoony Tail: She has claimed that her tail is flexible enough that she can use it as a pillow when sleeping. Also, when asked whether her tail wags like a dog's or curls around affectionately like a cat's, she admitted "A little bit of both", although she claimed that she doesn't really notice, and that it's more of a subconscious thing. Real shark tails are nowhere near as flexible, and are used only for propulsion, not to express emotion.
  • Cat Girl: Her 2nd 2D outfit gives her a cute set of white cat ears on her head. The outfit was advertised with #CatShark on Twitter, and the silhouette preview left very little doubt since the cat ears were quite visible. At least one artist interpreted them as "Shark Pods" from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
  • Character Catchphrase:
    • "a". Usually after several Beats and lots of reverb. Overlaps with Running Gag.
    • "Shaaark", usually said in repetition and in a low register. She clarifies in her Maneater stream that she thinks "shark" is a greeting because that's what humans always scream when they first see her. In her reaction to her debut, she mocks and cringes at her past self saying it - but she still continues to say it in occasion.
    • "Domo, same desu" note  which she frequently uses as her Japanese introduction.
    • "It's Gooba!" note
    • "Hoocha!", which she explains as, an onomatopoeia of choice for any fast, sharp actions. She has also used "Ka-chow!" in similar situations.
    • "Parkour!" whenever a game requires her to do a running sequence.
    • She also has a slightly whiny "What do you mean!?"
    • She officially adopted the excuse of "You can't be mad at me... I'm cute." in response to the chat disagreeing with her opinions.
    • She has a habit of calling people "Stinky" as an insult.
    • "Oh nyo!" note
  • Character Tic:
    • She often claps whenever she accomplishes something, which the fandom likens to her tail slapping with excitement.
    • When excited she tends to hyperventilate as if she's panting.
  • Cheap Costume: The Gawr Gura - Shark'd animation shows that her base Iconic Outfit is just a cheap bargain bin costume made for children, which probably explains why she was able to buy it with just a small pile of sand and sea shells, later we see even her hair ties are just something she found laying on the ground.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Gura's tendency to mispronounce words, forget her own age, and have no sense of direction emphasize her quirky and eccentric nature, making her endearing to viewers.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: Gura's occasional dark humor, mixed with her adorable and innocent appearance, adds an unexpected and sometimes edgy element to her character, creating a contrast between her innocent nature and her occasional twisted sense of humor.
  • Cool Car: Her anime OP shows her driving a black and blue sports car in a segment referencing her Grand Theft Auto V playthrough, where she tricked out a stolen sports car with a custom black and blue paint job. In the segment, Gawr ends up destroying the car by hijacking Gura's body and driving it off a cliff.
  • Cuddle Bug: She has a love for hugs, cuddles, and physical affection.
  • Cute Oversized Sleeves: Gura's signature appearance is an oversized hoodie with long sleeves. Many of the idols dote on her cuteness and have mentioned how her hands being hidden by her long sleeves adds to it. Gura embraces the trope. During the music video for "Q", Gura is dressed in a Badass Longcoat intentionally evoking Dante and Vergil, while Dual Wielding pistols effortlessly and still incorporating the cuteness of the long sleeves.
  • The Cutie: Gura's original characterization was that of a small, innocent child, who could be silly and shy, endearing her to her fellow talents and viewers. Over time, Gura's innocence dropped and her Covert Pervert tendencies became more prominent, but she is still able to deliver on the cuteness without trouble.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her character song "REFLECT" implies that she was a much more destructive person as Gawr before she accepted who she really was and became a VTuber as Gura.
  • Did They or Didn't They?: At the end of SHINKIRO, Marine and Gura prepare to say their goodbyes after a romantic summer. Gura calls out to Marine, who turns around to see Gura transforming into Gawr and leaping towards her. Cut to a silhouette of a giant shark with glowing red eyes and blush stickers chomping down on Marine. The scene then transitions to Marine waking up naked next to an equally nude Gawr, both covered by a glowing white Modesty Bedsheet that blends in with the ethereal background; the implication being that Gawr either literally ate Marine so they wouldn't have to be apart and she's in the afterlife... or the scene was a metaphor for them having sex. The final shot of Gura swimming away into the ocean while Marine's ship-in-a-bottle floats on the surface doesn't make it less ambiguous.
  • The Ditz: Gura can be quite airheaded at times.
    • When trying to add a tail to her Shark Hat House, she builds it so that the tail is horizontal like a whale's tail. When chat tries to tell her, she fails to understand what chat means by sharks having a vertical tail until after she's finished it. Upon finally realizing what chat meant, she decides to google herself to check what her tail looks like, then wonders if she's adopted.
    • During one collab with Kiara where she teaches Gura some simple German, Kiara explains that in "Australia", there are grades 1 to 5, and in Germany, there are grades 1 to 6. Gura mishears this as grades "1 2 5" and "1 2 6" and asks where the rest of the grades are. Cue Kiara absolutely losing her shit for a minute.
    • During the very first episode of the "UMISEA Specials", she absent-mindedly juggles a bomb with her tail and drops it, causing Marine's original ship to blow up.
    • And in the third episode she mindlessly waves a flashlight at Deep Sea levels, attracting dangerous predators in the process. Thankfully, she can speak to them as a fellow apex predator, and prevents them from eating the group alive.
  • Divine Parentage: Played for Laughs, but she once claimed that Poseidon is her father.
  • Doesn't Know Their Own Birthday: Gura doesn't remember when she was born or even what her exact age is anymore. She's been around since before humans even began to record the passage of time.
  • Dogs Love Being Praised: And humanoid sharks apparently. In the second episode of the "UMISEA Specials", after she single-handedly saves Marine and Aqua from dying of thirst, Ina pats her head, saying she did good, to which Gura replies "Yes! Praise me more!"
  • Extreme Omnivore: Gura has provided accounts of many strange and bizarre things she has eaten or wanted to eat, ranging from baby food and dog food, sand, bathwater, marble, and even a lava lamp.

    F-L
  • Fangirl: Gura has quickly turned into one for Devil May Cry, sharing that overcoming the game's difficulty was a good feeling. For characters, she's easily become one for Dante, squeeing extra hard during the scene in Devil May Cry 5 where Dante dances Michael Jackson style after getting the Faust Hat. This would continue into Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, where she gave the chat a genuinely heartwarming thank you for getting her so heavily invested in the series' worldbuilding, storylines, and the dynamic between Dante and Vergil; she's gone on record saying that both Dante and Vergil live rent-free inside her head since her experience with the franchise. This has been referenced in the music video for "Q", where Gura's dual pistols and coat are evocative of Dante and Virgil.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: During her Dead by Daylight collab with Anya, the latter asked her if she had a "real form" she could transform into, to which Gura responded by describing it as "like a typical shark you'd see on television, not a human shark. [...] The length of a car. [...] I'm gonna say... 14 feet note ."
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Downplayed Trope, but her hoodie is noticeably asymmetrical in that the right side (her left) has a part that looks like a gaping mouth full of sharp teeth.
  • Fish out of Water: Obvious pun aside, Gura often expresses confusion or unfamiliarity with surface world concepts. Her arrival on land after leaving Atlantis and her unfamiliarity with certain aspects of human culture create comedic situations and allow for humorous misunderstandings or misinterpretations.
  • Flip-Flop of God: She gives different answers on whether or not she's a shark magically able to take human form or an actual shark/human hybrid. Also on what species of shark she is, initially saying that she's a "Gura Shark" but more recently claiming that her shark form is that of a Salmon Shark.
  • Flipping the Bird: Gura showed up as the secret guest when Kiara and Amelia held the KFP Dance School in VR chat, allowing them to show off their new models based around Ame and Kiara's models in their "Dreaming Chuchu" song cover video. Gura's VR model was modeled in the same style, but Gura quickly discovered that she had individual finger control and immediately did her best Nero impression by flipping the bird high into the air. The artist confirmed that finger control on her model was a very last minute detail and didn't expect that to happen.
  • Fourth-Wall Observer: Gura's occasional acknowledgment of the audience, breaking the fourth wall, adds a meta and interactive element to her character, creating a sense of connection between her and her viewers.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: After Gura started playing WWE Video Games and created all of the Myth girls, she held a stream where she had all of them fight. While Gura near-perfectly recreated the outfitss of the other Myth girls, for herself she wore nothing but a skin-color swimsuit with the implication that she was meant to be naked.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum: Downplayed and discussed in a members karaoke. She likes calling the fanbase "Chumbies" because it's cuter, but will address them as "Chumbuds" for more official or serious discussions.
  • Fun with Acronyms:
    • During her debut stream she lists one of her likes as PWWIE (pronounced "pwee-ay"): People Watching Without Intent to Eat.
    • During a Fall Guys stream, she attempted to turn her own name into an acronym. After several false starts, she settled on "Giant Underwater Rubber Animal".
  • Fun Size: Compared to her fellow teammates she is tiny, and is actually the fourth shortest out of the entire hololive lineout note .
    • It stands out even more during EN collabs, as Calli and Kiara are the third and fifth tallest members of Hololive. At the first anniversary, when all of the -Myth- girls were touring the 3D virtual spaces, each of them had a room themed to them, and notably, Gura's room was called Smol(er) Gura's portal, as opposed to just Smol. Her outfit display at the 2022 Hololife Festival was also placed upon a child-size mannequin for scale, and if Gura's reaction is to be believed, that was the smallest possible mannequin they could find and it was still bigger than her by some margin.
  • Furry Reminder:
    • Ame once asked about Gura needing floaties to swim in a pool, with Gura getting annoyed but otherwise not denying it. Most species of shark (save for a handful) are indeed incapable of floating, needing to swim constantly in order to avoid sinking to the ocean floor.
    • She has a beef with dolphins in Minecraft. As the comments point out, this is fairly similar to how sharks and dolphins in real life are natural enemies.
    • During her stream where she reacted to her own debut stream, she confirmed that her kind cannibalize their siblings in the mother's womb like some species of real-life sharks, specifically stating that "we" do this. Then again, she also claimed that they do this at the age of 85 while making fun of how short-lived humans are, so it's unclear how serious she was.
  • Genre Savvy: Gura's knowledge of Konosuba, her familiarity with the Barbie Horse Adventures game, and her references to various video games showcase her awareness and understanding of different genres and adds to her relatability and engagement with her audience.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Has two tiny pigtails under her hat, held by shark hairclips.
  • Giving Up the Ghost: The "Gawr Gura - Shark'd" origin story features Gura getting smacked by Haachama with a Paper Fan of Doom, with Gura's shark hoodie-wearing ghost flying out of her mouth. This was added in at Gura's request for a bit of humor.
  • Going Commando: "Just because [I] go commando doesn't automatically mean that ''those'' cheeks are up for grabs, alright?". She has admitted herself that she sleeps bottomless for practical reasons (her tail), and unless she has errands to run she goes without wearing pants at home too. The "Gawr Gura - Shark'd" short reveals she at least wears Modesty Shorts.
Gura: Listen fellas, if you could get away with never having to wear pants, would you? Of course you would! BAN PANTS!
  • Gorgeous Greek: Her 3rd 2D outfit heavily emphasizes her ancient Greek heritage and makes her look like one.
  • Gratuitous Japanese: As Gura is not fluent in Japanese, she has gradually picked up words and phrases both from watching her Japanese senpais and from lessons given by Kiara. The vocabulary she has accumulated consists of quite a lot of vulgar words that generally should be avoided in conversation.
  • Gun Kata: In the music video for "Q", which depicts Gura and Calliope Mori as rival gang leaders, Gura uses her shark tooth-themed pistols to block and parry Mori's katana while attempting to shoot her.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Zig-Zagged Trope. While Gura has on occasion claimed to be half human, such as when reacting to her own debut stream ("You are half human, you stupid fish!"), she has also described both of her IRL parents as sharks, referring to them as "mama shark" and "papa shark".
  • Hair Color Dissonance: Her hair is mostly a silvery white, but she has a few strands in her bangs that are various shades of blue.
  • Head Pet: As part of her New Year kimono outfit, Gura had a shrimp named Ebi-chan (which Gura drew herself) included as part of the outfit, where it rests on her head.
  • Heartwarming Orphan: Gura's backstory of being an orphan from Atlantis adds a sympathetic and emotional aspect to her character, creating opportunities for character development and connecting with viewers on an emotional level.
  • Hidden Buxom: Discussed and Defied Trope.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • In "REFLECT", it's revealed that she has another personality inside her, one that is red eyed, predatory, cruel, rude, cynical, destructive and very critical of Gura's current life choices. It's implied that this was Gura's past self before joining Hololive, which further implies she has a Dark and Troubled Past she hasn't revealed to her audience at that point. Gura herself clarified that this is "Gawr".
    • Again, in "REFLECT" she is quoting Euripides, which implies she is (or at least used to be) a fan of Ancient Greek Drama. Furthermore, she is quoting The Trojan Women, a play which deals with the horrors of war and the horrible fate that befalls the defeated, which further implies that, behind her cute exterior, Gura has probably witnessed some really heavy stuff during her lifetime(the play itself doesn't pull any punches).
    • The second episode of the "UMISEA Specials" shows that she can be quite resourceful and useful, especially in Robinsonade case scenarios, being able to not only survive but also help her fellow UMISEA members Hoshou Marine and Minato Aqua not die of thirst and starvation.
    • Her appearance on Oozora Police, she easily throws Subaru and Bae through a loop and dominates the interogation by using actual legal logic, such as asking for her lawyer, asking the officers badge numbers, and claiming that she cannot discuss the trade agreement she made with Kaela without all parties present. Finally, when Subaru brings up her using her cuteness to get away with things, she instantly turns the tables by making it seem like Subaru was insulting her and saying she wasn't cute, resulting in Subaru apologising to her. Subaru notes this, calling her a genius more than once during the interogation.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Her anime OP shows her trying to boot up her stream only to encounter technical difficulties that get worse the more she tries to troubleshoot them, ending with Gura desperately praying for divine intervention before angrily impaling her computer with her trident.
  • The Hunter Becomes the Hunted: Despite her repeated assertions of being an Apex Predator, a fair number of the games she plays are Survival Horror games where she is the prey. Also, any instances of Carnivore Confusion involving her have involved the topic of sharks as food.
  • Hypocrite:
    • During a collab with Kronii, she mocks the fact that she arbitrarily picked Pi Day (March 14th) as her birthday as "stupid". This despite Gura herself having deliberately chosen the premiere date of Jaws as her own birthday.
    • During a karaoke performance of "Chichi wo Moge" from Zatch Bell!, Gura groped Shion and then teased her for being flat-chested, to Shion's annoyance.
  • I Hate Past Me:
    • As part of Holo EN's six month anniversary celebration, she reacted to her own debut stream... and spent most of it cringing at the way she used to act, especially the way she used to overemphasize her "cute ditz" persona.
    • In her Image Song "REFLECT", present Gura dislikes how critical and cruel her past self is, being ashamed of her darker past. Subverted insofar as she actually makes peace with that persona near the end of the song and acknowledges that she would not have come as far as she did without it, then politely asks it to keep watching over her and lending her strength even as she continues to pursue a path it disapproves of.
  • I Have Many Names: Gura has quite a lot of nicknames either given to her by her genmates, cooked up on the spot by herself, or a combination of the two, usually variations of her own name, "Goomba", or "Goober", many of which she had come to semi-adopt as her in-game IDs and on social media as well.
  • Idiot Hair: Gura initially requested if her model could have an ahoge, but the idea was shot down. She was given one during her New Years Kimono outfit reveal.
  • Image Song: Her first original song, "REFLECT", explores a facet of her history she normally doesn't delve upon; namely, the ghost of her predatory past self looking down on the carefree person she has become, with Gura coming to terms with her old Gawr persona and moving forward, true to herself while also taking her past experiences to heart. During the song retrospective stream, Gura admits that it's not so much of a split personality as it is her tendency to be extremely self-critical; something she has to embrace and not let it tie her down forever, while also not rejecting the fact that it was part of how she had gotten as far as she had.
  • Informed Attribute: Her official bio claims she dearly loves her shark hoodie hat. This may have been true initially, but after she became aware of certain viewer opinions on the shape of her silhouette while wearing it, she stopped wearing it for a very long time.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: In-universe, the reason she "showed up naked to the girls' first meeting" (her avatar bugged out and didn't render her clothes) is because Atlanteans tend to wear little to no clothes, so Gura didn't know humans are supposed to wear clothes all the time. Her lore video “Gawr Gura - Shark’d” would confirm she did indeed arrive on land naked and did not understand why others were weirded out by her lack of clothing.
  • In-Series Nickname: Several senpais in the Japanese branch frequently call her Same-chan (Shark-chan). When speaking Japanese, even Gura eventually adopted this and refers to herself by this name.
  • In the Hood: Her default costume is essentially a big hoodie, though the hood part seems to be a separate headwear that looks a bit too small for her head. She doesn't have the hood on all that much, though, as outside of stream thumbnails, she usually goes bare-headed. She's admitted that she's not a fan of how the hood makes her look, making her look "very round", and hopes to get a different hat.
  • Ironic Nickname: One that she gave to herself. Gura's in-game name of choice is "BigFish" where possible, even though she herself is tiny.
  • Jekyll & Hyde: Her Image Song "REFLECT" reveals that Gawr is another personality inside her, one that is Red-Eyed, blood-thirsty, cruel, predatory and destructive. It's who she used to be before joining Hololive, and it's a part of herself that she struggles to keep under control..
  • Joshikousei: Gura's schoolgirl outfit fits her in a white Sailor Fuku with a pastel yellow sweatshirt and a light blue and white sports hoodie.
  • Just One More Level!: In a similar fashion to Kronii, she is very addicted to playing Minecraft. Most of her streams are in fact Minecraft streams.
  • Lens Flare Censor: To a comical degree in the "Gawr Gura - Shark'd" animation, where bright shafts of light seem to be glued to her body in strategic positions to cover up the sensitive bits, due to Gura being stark naked upon her arrival onto dry land. Gura clarified that this was added in post, as she was originally just supposed to be covered up by a Scenery Censor instead.
  • Literal-Minded: She occasionally takes statements or instructions quite literally, creating amusing misunderstandings or unexpected outcomes.
  • Little Bit Beastly: There's her shark-like teeth, for one, and her tail is confirmed by her to be a real part of her (unlike Coco's plug-in type). She has also mentioned having gills, located on her ribcage.
  • Love Confession:
    • During her [2MILLION PARTY], she sang various songs from her other Hololive friends, including Kiara's "Hinotori", Calli's "Live Again", and Suisei's "NEXT COLOR PLANET". She would often shout "I love you!" to her friends and senpais during interludes.
    • While sneaking into the JP Minecraft server on August 23, 2021, Gura stumbled across Shion's love letter left for her and replied with writing an awkward one of her own.
Gura: "Dearest lady Shion, my love for you burns like an everlasting flame of love. I hope one day we may meet in this block world. Please log in again. I will wait for all eternity. Your hair shines like the brightest moonlight, your smile shines light the sun. Shion... suki, - same". [Smiles heartwarmingly before looking at her snarky chat] STOP CALLING ME CRINGE, DAMNIT!

    M-R
  • Meaningful Name: When a commenter asked her why she's named "Gawr Gura", she replied that "gawr" is the name of an ancient sea creature note , and "gura" means "gluttonous", meaning that her name could be interpreted as "gluttonous monster". As another commenter clarified:
Commenter: Gula is the latin word specifically referring to the 'sin of gluttony', and since Japanese typically replace L-sounds with R-sounds, that explains 'Gura'. Now after doing some research, 'Gawr' could refer to 'Gar', a giant mythological alligator the size of a bus with multiple rows of teeth (like a shark) around Central America, or Garmr (or Garm), the Norse Mythological hellhound that guards the entrance to Hellheim.
  • Making a Splash: Gura is portrayed as being able to manipulate and weaponize water with her trident in the music video for "Non-Fiction".
  • Mob War: The MV for "Q" pits Calli and her Deadbeat army engaging in a gang war with Gura and her Chumbuds. Halfway into the song, both armies are hit with a mysterious gas that drives them crazy and turns them against the duo, forcing them to reconcile by beating the crap out of their forces.
  • Modesty Shorts: Contrary to Gura's claims of Going Commando, the "Gawr Gura Shark'd" anime short shows she wears black spats under her oversized shark-themed jacket.
  • Mystical White Hair: Her hair is white with a few blue strands, befitting her not quite human status as a shark girl from Atlantis.
  • My Instincts Are Showing: Her HoloGra debut has her biting onto Flare's arm while saying that sometimes it's impossible to ignore her instincts.
  • Naked on Arrival: It's revealed that Gura first arrived on land completely naked, as shown in Gawr Gura Shark'd, the anime short showcasing her origin story.
  • Naked People Are Funny:
    • When explaining the incident with her chat about the time her avatar loaded in naked during a test run a couple of days before Holomyth's debut, Gura admitted it was funny and she and her fellow Holomyth partners had a good laugh over it, and Gura even took screencaps to remember. This is referenced in the "Gawr Gura Shark'd" anime short, where she's initially naked save for seaweed, police tape, and a lens flare before finding clothes in a store; eliciting comical reactions from the Hololive idols who encounter her.
  • National Geographic Nudity: During her baththub stream, Gura explained that the in-universe reason for her showing up naked to the girls' first meeting was because since clothes become heavy when wet and create drag underwater, Atlanteans tend to wear little to no clothes, so Gura didn't know that humans are supposed to wear clothes all the time.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • When asked about the bite mark and scratches on her tail, she states the scratches had something to do with falling into a ravine, but the bite marks has slipped her memory.
    • Amelia mentions in her New Year stream an incident of "seeing Gura naked". This would later be confirmed by Kiara along with Gura herself who explained that Gura's avatar bugged out and didn't render her clothes while the EN team was testing them before their debut.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: At the time of her debut, Gura was the only "daughter" of Nachoneko who didn't possess her characteristic Creator Thumbprints of a Playful Cat Smile and feline eyes. She had since been joined by Gokigen Naname and Draki Kona in this aspect.
  • Not What It Looks Like: During the 1 Year Anniversary, Gura was Tea bagging a cardboard prop of Calli. Even though Gura called it as such during her 1 Year Anniversary Party, she explained she was actually trying to work out a technical issue with the VR gear she was wearing, which wasn't properly tracking her leg movements.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Usually being the child of the group so to speak, she got to have this with Calli during a stream where Gura learned of Calli's enjoyment of Bang brand energy drinks. There was a rare case of actually shocked contempt from Gura in regards what was in these drinks and their bizarre line of flavors, so much so that you got to very briefly hear her voice break character.
  • Official Couple:
    • With Shion. Notably one of the few couples who got mutually married and stayed together. After exchanging love letters, Gura and Shion had their first Minecraft collab together where they went on a date and proposed.
    • In the music video for SHINKIRO, Gura is found sleeping on a beach by Houshou Marine, who is immediately smitten with her. They spend a romantic summer together before Gura has to return to the ocean, the music video ending with the implication that Gawr either literally ate Marine so they wouldn't have to be apart, or they spent the night together intimately before parting ways.
  • Oh, My Gods!: Gura has occasionally sworn by Poseidon/Neptune.
  • Older Than They Look: While her short stature and immature attitude can make her mistakenly seem like a kid, her age is actually somewhere in the 9000's, with her struggling to remember the last three digits since it gets hazy once you pass 5000 years. During her birthday celebration, she decided to settle on 9486 just for the sake of having a number to celebrate.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten:
    • Ever since several members of Holo EN mentioned the naked Gura incident, it seems to have become customary to bring it up again any time the topic of Gura possibly being Hidden Buxom comes up as a quick but decisive confirmation/reminder that no, she is not.
    • Gura acknowledges that she's never going to live down the "1 2 5" misunderstanding from Kiara's German language stream.
  • Origins Episode: The "Gawr Gura Shark'd" animation tells the official story of how Gura joined Hololive, showing her arrival on the surface, discovering her Iconic Outfit, and coming across an ad for Hololive. It then flashes to the present day with Gura waking up, getting dressed, and jumping on for a livestream.
  • Overly Narrow Superlative: Gura was once called "The smartest shark in Hololive" by her chat.
  • Petite Pride:
    • Quoth Gura, she's not flat, she's "hydrodynamic" note . And unlike Ina, she's (usually) less upset or insulted by people bringing it up, and more annoyed that people feel the need to keep bringing it up.
    • She also isn't above making flat jokes about herself, such as when she was playing a game and encountered a chair that was shaking due to collision physics and exlaimed "This chair has more boing than I do!", or when she was bouncing on a trampoline in another game and exlaimed "The closest I'll ever get to boing boing".
    • She has fun with this while playing Ring Fit Adventure, eagerly participating in an activity that worked her abs and core.
Gura: If I'm going to be flat as a cutting board, then I'm going be... a cutting board with abs!
  • Playful Cat Smile: Her Smol VR model has a default cat smile, compared to everyone else who just as a defined curve smile.
  • Portmanteau: Her membership name, "Membershrimp", is a combination of "member" and "shrimp".
  • Pretentious Pronunciation: On occasion Gura doesn't even pronounce her own name consistently. It was usually pronounced "Gula" during the first few months of streaming, but there were times when she's said "Goora". She finally elaborates that the former is the correct pronounciation, but she will accept anyone using the latter too. From December 2020 onward, she's slipped comfortably into pronouncing the R sound and hasn't brought it up ever since.
  • Prongs of Poseidon: One of her few characteristics that isn't shark-related is the fact she's carrying a trident with her, which she calls a very big fork. She's an Atlantean, after all.
  • Red Baron: In her cover of KING with Calliope, she is referred to as "Ruler of the Sea".
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: During games where she gets to kill people in multiplayer, she will sometimes shift her avatar’s blue color to red, including her eyes. "REFLECT" reveals this alternate persona, Gawr, is her past self.
  • Really 700 Years Old: During her debut stream she puts her age as 9927 years old, but admits that she's not entirely sure and claims that things get kind of hazy once you pass 5000, resulting in the last three digits of her age changing every time it's mentioned.

    S-Z
  • Scary Teeth: She has a visible upper row of pointed shark teeth. She also has lower teeth, though they usually aren't visible on her avatar and her apparent lack of them became a running joke in her fandom. The art for Gura and Matsuri's cover of Sorairo Days, drawn by a different artist, does depict Gura with lower teeth as well. When she gained an official 3D model, said model actually did include lower teeth, which are clearly visible on close ups of the model.
  • Self-Applied Nickname: She loves coming up with silly variations of her name to refer to herself by, some of which include: Goomba, Gooba, Goombus, Gwombus, Goobsa, Goob, and BigFish to name a few.
  • Shaking the Rump: She is fond of doing this when she dances in all her 3D-forms. Her official anime OP has a clip of her bending over and shaking her hips while wagging her tail, while looking over her shoulder with a smirk.
  • Shaped Like Itself: What type of shark is Gura? She's a Gura-shark. Bloop is a shark-shark.
  • Shipper on Deck: During her 3D Showcase, she took the Smol dolls sitting on her bed and explained how she ships TakaMori and InAme. She also made them kiss.
  • Ship Tease: With Amelia and Shion.
    • Amelia:
      • After months of fans shipping the two of them together, Amelia finally set the shippers ablaze by calling Gura "[her] wife" on Twitter. Then for Amelia's birthday, among her presents Gura had gifted her a box of synthetic lemons to which Gura replies by saying "those lemons will last forever, like my love for you".
      • They have dedicated the same song to one another in previous karaoke streams.
      • They have also have done a couple of duets with each other's karaoke recordings.
      • Gura in particular has the aforementioned Catchphrase "This reminds me of Amelia!" which has been lampshaded by their own manager, Jenma. She also consistently sings praises of Amelia not just in collabs but in her solo streams; moreso than any other member of HoloEN.
      • During Coco's graduation, Gura was absent from the rest of the EN girls segment note . Ame commented about this on twitter with: "Same sleep in. With me"
    • Shion:
      • Shion wrote Gura a love letter, which Gura responded to in kind.
      • Gura playfully groped Shion during their performance of "Chichi wo Moge!" from Zatch Bell!.
      • Gura's official anime OP has her blushing as Shion reaches over to grab some popcorn.
  • Significant Birth Date: June 20th is the day Jaws was released, which she herself pointed out in her debut stream. She also mentions that it isn't her actual birthday, but she's forgotten when her actual birthday is, so she decided to choose that day to celebrate her birthday.
  • Signature Headgear: Her shark hood, though Gura herself hates it due it making her head look too round.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Her profile notes that she enjoys talking to marine life. The third UMISEA episode, shows her talking to and befriending some fellow sea predators at Deep Sea levels.
  • Speech Impediment: During a stream of Luigi's Mansion 3, Gura brought attention to a lisp she has. She has slight difficulty saying S sounds. She blames the gaps in her pointed shark teeth.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: She has a tendency to suddenly appear or disappear from streams, often without notice.
  • Super-Deformed: Gura decides to distort her live model giving wide shark and long shark.
  • Super Drowning Skills: Ironic given she is a shark. Several of her gen mates, notably Ame, remarked that Gura can't swim without floaties. Several official animations have established this is canon.
    • The Umisea animated series where Gura indeed cannot swim far when the girls are stuck on a deserted island.
    • It appears that while Gura has trouble swimming at the surface, she functions perfectly fine underwater, with the "Shark'd" animation showing her arriving on the shoreline for the first time after swimming there.
    • Her anime OP shows her almost drowning in a kiddie pool after stubbornly taking her floaties off.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: In her lore video Gawr Gura Shark'd, she comes up from the sea wearing only a piece of seaweed around her chest...and is almost immediately accosted by Officer Subaru for public nudity. She also has no money, paying for her signature outfit by pouring a handful of sand and seashells onto the counter.
  • Synchro-Vox: Gura superimposed her face over a wedge of cheese as part of her tribute to Bae's "Not Birthday" stream.
  • The Tease: Gura and Shion have frequently talked up the idea of getting married since their first interactions in summer 2021, the former being the only person the latter has been willing to take her usual antics to its logical conclusion with. Due to various extenuating circumstances on both ends, they've yet to make any significant progress in that regard, instead proposing again and again and otherwise making do with this trope.
  • Time Abyss: Her age is in the nine thousands, placing her among the oldest of Hololive's entire roster, but she has the appearance of a small child and has apparently been looking like that for a while.
  • Token Mini-Moe: Played with. While Gura is not a child (for both character note  and real life), she often gets treated as The Baby of the Bunch due to her small stature and naivety. She is often jokingly considered the 'baby shark' of the EN team.
  • To Serve Man:
    • Averted; she thinks humans taste terrible (though obviously that implies that she at least tried some time in the past). This is also a case of Truth in Television, as experts believe that sharks don't really like the taste of human - most shark attacks have the shark deliver a savage bite, but rarely actually eat. As far as mammals go, sharks tend to eat seals and whales/dolphins, which have thick fat layers to stay warm underwater.
    • Although on the other hand, when Amelia claimed that "detectives don't taste very well" during her and Gura's visit to the Japanese Minecraft server, Gura responded with "I beg to differ, I beg to differ", although it's possible she was joking since this happened right after Moona had joked that she wanted to make shark soup out of Gura.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Salmon is stated to be her favorite food on paper. Though this seems to just be for her lore and scarcely talks about actually eating salmon.
  • The Unpronounceable:
    • The "r" in "Gawr" is supposed to be silent, meaning it is pronounced like "Gau" (like the word "ow" with a hard g in front of it), not "Gar" (which raises the question of why it's transcribed as "Gauru" in Japanese). In her first few months, she would often pronounces it as "Goo". Right around the point of celebrating her 2 million subscribers, she has comfortably slipped into consistently pronouncing her name as "Gar Goora."
    • While Gura herself, as well as Ame, Ina, and Kiara, pronounce her given name as "Goo-rah" (somewhat similar to how her name would be read in Japanese), Calli has a tendency to prounounce it as "Gurr-uh" (with a significant American accent).
  • Vague Age: Naturally for a Hololive talent, Gura's age is all over the place. While it is known that she's in the nine-thousands years old, the specific numbers keep changing every time her age is mentioned and even she herself can't remember beyond the first digit.
  • Visual Pun: Her casual outfit gave her a pair of cat ears, making her a Catshark.
  • Welcome to Corneria: Gura was added in as DLC content for Groove Coaster Wai Wai Party, with her character available and commenting on the main menu screen, sub-menus, and result screens. While fidgeting with the voice audio in the options, "Gura" kept repeating the same lines over and over.
Gura: Ever heard of Atlantis? I'm from Atlantis.
  • What the Hell Is That Accent?: Even though the Japanese and English lyrics in "REFLECT" are both excellently sung and perfectly understandable, her attempt to speak (Ancient) Greek comes off that way. She justifies it by saying that she hasn't been to Atlantis in over 4000 years and her Greek is a bit rusty.
Gura: I did not say Among Us!! note .
  • Wingding Eyes: Gura's 3D model allows her to show excitement with stars in her eyes.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: Maybe. Her official backstory says she left Atlantis out of boredom, but during one of her streams, she mentions that it's unlikely people there will ever miss her, implying she didn't exactly fit in. When interviewed by Amelia, Gura mentions that Atlantis has been gone for thousands of years, and visiting the ruins would require specialized equipment to combat the water's pressure (at least for Ame to visit. It isn't clear if Gura or other Atlanteans would be able to do so without gear).

Other Characters

    Bloop

Bloop

Gura's mascot, a small shark who initially was kept inside a bubble.
  • Emergency Food Supply Animal: Bloop is Gura's (non-anthropomorphic) pet shark who wears an emergency rations tin on his head as a hat. Appropriately enough, that's exactly what he is for her.
  • Gag Censor: Bloop is frequently used whenever Gura needs to censor something she can't show on YouTube.
  • Let's Meet the Meat: Gura openly admits that Bloop is "emergency rations". Calli is mortified that she has plans to eat him.
  • Mobile Fishbowl: Bloop usually floats around inside a water bubble.
  • Noodle Incident: During their first collab, she quizzed her fellow members on what Bloop is, with the choices being her pet, a ration, or The Bloop. It's implied that not only does she know what the Bloop was, but that Bloop somehow caused it.
  • Out of Focus: Appearances by Bloop, along with Gura's trident, have become increasingly infrequent since, as Gura noted when she brought them out again after a significant absence, their art assets are quite large and intrusive. When asked about it, Gura responded that the In-Universe reason is that Bloop is hibernating. August of 2021 would see Bloop return, outside of his bubble for no explained reason (Gura's explaination simply being he managed to get out of his bubble "somehow"), but now just peeking his face up above the table and not being a nuisance.
  • Real Event, Fictional Cause: She has implied that Bloop caused The Bloop.
  • Take Our Word for It: When asked why Bloop resides inside a bubble, she simply said that it was for her audience's safety and left it at that. Seeing as how huke draws a freed Bloop like this, it might be best to take her word for it. This is lampshaded in a Freeze-Frame Bonus tweet at the beginning of Sana’s debut:
Bloop: Once I am free of this bubble I will eat your firstborn child.
  • Your Size May Vary: Bloop’s size seems to vary greatly between Gura’s outfits. His original default form kept in the bubble version seems to be about the size of Gura’s head, but when he appears in Gura’s New Year kimono outfit he is the size of a goldfish.

    Gawr

Gawr

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gawr__2021augkaraoke_19.png

Debut date: June 21st, 2021

Gura's evil side. First brought up in her Image Song "REFLECT", and made her first full appearance in an unarchived karaoke stream on August 17th, 2021.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Inverted Trope. Despite being Gura's Evil Counterpart, Gawr is notable in her lack of ambition compared to Gura being a streamer and an idol, with Gawr trying to tempt her into conforming to expectations and returning to the predatory beast she was born as.
  • Bookends: Gura's first original single "REFLECT" starts and ends with Gawr paraphrasing Euripides in ancient Greek.
  • The Cameo: She makes a brief appearance during the fourth Umisea special episode, as Gura's evil reflection. Houshou Marine mistakes her for a ghost. She also cameos twice in "Gawr Gura - Shark'd" — when Gura first arrives on the surface her eyes and hair-streaks are red, and when Gura's startled by some store mannequins Gawr takes over and growls at them before realizing they're not a threat.
  • Drives Like Crazy: In a segment of Gura's anime OP representing Grand Theft Auto V, Gawr bodyjacks a panicking Gura and floors the gas with a Slasher Smile as her wanted rating hits five stars, culminating in Gura's car ploughing through a fence and going off a cliff.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: When she debuted in Gura's Image Song REFLECT, her voice was higher pitched with a filter on top of it, making her sound like something out of the Persona series. Later appearances had her just use Gura's natural voice, and she toned down her hostility as time went on, making her seem more like normal Gura with her hair and eyes dyed red.
  • Evil Counterpart: On August 17th, 2021, Gawr manifested and held an unarchived concert. Gura's avatar was wearing a red hoodie, hair decs, red highlights in her hair, and had red eyes. She was brooding, roasted the chat and unarchived content clippers, found her "cheerful idol persona" to be grating, complained about all of the surface world's various annoying conventions like chairs, poked fun at the younger generations who still play Fortnite, and claimed she could smell Kiara's horrible odor from miles away.
Gawr: If I see one person say "cringe" in this chat, I'm throwing my trident at the wall... Yeah there it is, "cringe". I thought I'd get us all warmed up with the cringe comment. Get ready, copy paste everybody. Paste, paste, paste. Thank you, I'm finally going to get some use out of that stupid fork I have laying around.
  • Evil Twin: In addition to being Gura's Evil Counterpart, Gawr is also Gura's palette-swapped doppelgänger.
  • Future Loser: Gura's August 17th, 2021 karaoke stream showed that Gawr, Gura's Darker and Edgier past persona, seems to consider the present Gura to be this, bemoaning how an apex predator like herself has been reduced to "pwaying Minecwaft".
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: When she cameos in the fourth Umisea short, her eyes ominously glow red as she stares at Marine.
  • Good Colors, Evil Colors: She has a red color motif in contrast to Gura's blue.
  • Hellish Pupils: Gawr is depicted with vertical slits for pupils in the cover art and music video for "REFLECT", the "Gawr Gura - Shark'd" animation, and Gura's anime OP, accentuating her bloodthirsty and savage attitude.
  • Humble Goal: In contrast to Gura, who wishes to be an idol and a streamer, she just wants to hang around in the ocean and hunt food like they used to, with her lyrics in "REFLECT" having her mock Gura for wanting something more and encouraging her to give up and just conform.
  • I Hate Past Me: Inverted and played straight in Gura's Image Song, "REFLECT", where Gawr, who represents Gura's past and darkest thoughts, criticizes her heavily on who she has become today.
  • Jekyll & Hyde: She is the "Hyde" to Gura's "Jekyll", as revealed in "REFLECT", being the embodiment of Gura's past as a sea-monster and her repressed darkest thoughts.
  • Literal Split Personality: There's been a few occasions where Gawr has been depicted as a separate entity from Gura, such as trapping her in a washing machine as a prank in her anime OP, and dancing alongside her in a July 2023 performance.
  • Mirror Monster: She shows up whenever Gura gazes upon her reflection (both in "REFLECT" and the fourth Umisea short). Gura's anime OP has her show up in Gura's reflection while screaming in horror as Gura tries on makeup.
  • Mistaken for Undead: In the fourth Umisea short, Marine mistakes her for a ghost.
  • Motor Mouth: Tends to speak a lot faster than Gura, resulting in run-on sentences. For example, in "REFLECT", Gawr viciously tears down the present-day Gura's desire to live true to herself, constantly taunting her choices.
Gura: I'm not like you. Stop it, I hate the way you judge me. I don't need to conform to any ideals, I just want to be myself, I just want to be understood.
Gawr: Heh! If you don't conform, then why were you even born? There ain't no hopes, there ain't no dreams, only pain, pain, pain, pain. Be yourself? Do you know who you are? Give it up and ride the wave, just chill!
  • Palette Swap: In Gura's streams, Gawr is just Gura with the blue parts swapped to red, including her clothes. In the official art, music video for "REFLECT", and fourth Umisea short she's depicted wearing Gura's usual blue clothes — often stained with blood — but with red streaks in her hair, red irises, and Hellish Pupils. In Gura's anime OP, she's dipicted wearing the red palette swap, Gura's usual blue, and a green version.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: She is a predatory, darker persona with red eyes. In addition, she sometimes has them in thumbnails, primarily for Dead by Daylight streams where she takes great delight in playing a Killer.
  • Scary Teeth: Unlike Gura's Cute Little Fangs, Gawr is frequently shown baring her fangs in bloodthirsty grins or angry snarls. "Gawr Gura - Shark'd" also shows her fangs in more realistic detail than Gura's cartoony jagged line.
  • Slasher Smile:
    • In the key art and music video for "REFLECT", Gawr sports a sharp-toothed grin, which in the former is accentuated by the blood smeared on her face.
    • When she manifests in the mirror in the fourth Umisea short, she sports a sinister grin while staring hungrily at Marine.
    • In Gura's anime OP, Gawr takes over a panicking Gura in a segment representing Grand Theft Auto V, sporting a maniacal grin as she floors the gas and drives their stolen car off a cliff.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: All of Gura's sharky instincts and power locked away only to be released at dire circumstances or to be mean to the chumbuddies, leading to a few fan-made projects putting forward the idea that Gawr is Gura's more powerful dark side. The "Gawr Gura Shark'd" anime short downplays this and shows Gawr taking the reins when Gura feels threatened, such as snarling at some store manakins that startled her. Other official videos have her manifesting through Gura's reflection to berate Gura and scare her friends, and Gura's anime OP has her take over while Gura is driving to ram through a fence and go off a cliff while sporting a Slasher Smile in a segment representing Grand Theft Auto V. She also functions as an analogue to Devil Trigger in the segment representing Devil May Cry, as well as Myth's Bad Ending, where she becomes The Berserker.
  • Threatening Shark: Discussed. Gawr is quick to criticize Gura's Image Song, "REFLECT", for wanting to be understood and move on from her past as a predator. In Gawr's mind, this is a mistake; Gawr would much prefer to become a predator and feared once again. At the end of SHINKIRO, Gawr is shown in silhouette as a giant shark with glowing red eyes and blush stickers just before devouring Marine.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In her later appearances, she is somewhat less hostile and confrontational, making it harder to distinguish when it's Gawr and when it's just Gura in red. Gura's anime OP shows a more comical side to Gawr, such as her pranking Gura by trapping her in a washing machine or panicking at Gura's disasterous attempt to put on makeup.
  • To Serve Man: At the end of SHINKIRO, it's implied that Gawr takes over Gura and eats Marine so that they'll never have to be apart.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Gura's reaction to seeing her appear in the mirror in one of the Umisea shorts, is to just turn around in boredom and ignore her.
  • We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties: During the April Fools 2022 collab, when the Smol Ame mascot took off her head to reveal she literally had no head underneath, the girls freaked out to try and fix it. A technical difficulties message appeared complete with soothing waiting music.
