Team Sonic

One of the protagonist groups in the story. They are a group of anthropomorphic animals who combat the forces of the mechanical Eggman Empire. They follow him into the world of Remnant, right as the empire launches its conquest.

    As a Whole
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_modern_freedom_fighters_by_nictrain123_d6gha23_fullview.png

  • Age Lift: They're all about three to four years older than their canon counterparts, who are perpetually in their teens.
  • Experienced Protagonists: The team has nearly twenty years' worth of games under their belt at this point in the story and it shows in how they easily deal with threats that RWBY and JNPR have trouble with early on.
  • Foil: To the Inner Circle.
  • The Mentor: Each of them are more than willing to mentor the students. In technique, skills, or style for bringing them to their best selves.
  • New Transfer Student: Subverted. Despite their ages somewhat passing for new students, Sonic and the rest of the gang will not enroll as students in Beacon Academy. Rather, they treat it as their primary hideout as they wage their battle against Dr. Eggman.
  • Recurring Element: Sharing this role with Team DARK, they're the more experienced part of the protagonist team imparting wisdom and mentorship to the starting heroes.

    Sonic the Hedgehog
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/idw002_sonic01_cover_9.png
"It's what I do. Just keep moving, doing good, saving folks, and living as free as the wind. I want to live my life my way and live it to the fullest. But I also want other people to experience that same kind of freedom, where they're free to live the lives they want. So when someone like Eggman tries to show up and take their freedom away, I put a stop to 'em."

The famous Blue Blur and one of the titular main protagonists of the series alongside Ruby. He opposes the Eggman Empire, which seeks to conquer Remnant as a whole. Upon landing on the new world, he's separated from his allies and bumps into the Ace-Ops and first, then Ruby Rose.

  • All-Loving Hero: Typical of Sonic. Upon setting foot into Remnant, he saves a town under siege by Grimm and only sought to get back to his friends in return without any other payment.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Despite his own natural look and all the other abilities that Sonic has seen, both on his own world and Remnant, Sonic is initially skeptical that Clover could have "being lucky" as a Semblance/superpower before Pietro clarifies that it's more of a probability alteration power.
  • Blue Is Heroic: As a blue hedgehog that matches Ruby's red clothing.
  • Challenge Seeker: It's Sonic the Hedgehog. He's rather thrilled about facing the Grimm, especially after he first encounters them.
  • Composite Character: A bit less so than Knuckles, but Sonic's background does pull a bit from his movie counterpart. He was raised by Longclaw and she disappeared in events related to the echidnas.
  • Falling into the Plot: Sonic's interference in the world of Remnant begins with him crash-landing into the ground after Tails' ship crashes on another part of the world.
  • Foil: Is one to Ozpin. Sonic goes with the change and encourages others to live freely as well. It hasn't worked for everyone (can’t stop people from making the wrong choices), but he won’t betray his principles out of fear. While Ozpin is trapped and is always living in fear of the worst-case scenario and has to manipulate everyone into going in the direction he wants to keep the stack of cards steady. In short, one is a scared bird in a cage, the other is a free bird who goes where the wind takes him.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Sonic gets himself a sword he names Caliburn to aid him. It's justified, as here, his swordsmanship skills from training with the original Caliburn during his Camelot adventure in Sonic and the Black Knight actually stuck.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Sonic lives by the creed to live his life free of restraints and to its fullest. Interestingly, while this can make him a bit flippant, he also has an ethos to give others a chance to experience this freedom. So that others can grow into their best selves, and ensure that tyrants like Eggman can never take that away from others.
  • Instant Expert: Discussed and averted. He makes it clear to Yang that when he first used a sword, his attempts made Jaune look like Weiss by comparison.
  • Lightning Bruiser: In addition to his standard Super-Speed, his physical prowess is enough to take out Beowolves and Ursas in a single file.
  • The Mentor: Plays this role to Ruby at times, giving her advice on what it means to be a leader and encouraging her whenever things go south.
  • Not-So-Imaginary Friend: At first Yang thought Sonic was just Ruby's imaginary friend until she met Knuckles and realized Ruby was telling the truth.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: In Chapter 30, following Tails' successful reprogramming of Cinder's virus, the heroes lure her and her team into a trap, with Emerald, Mercury, and Neo incapacitated by Sonic's allies. Enraged, Cinder blames Sonic for ruining their plans. She vehemently asserts her entitlement to the remaining Fall Maiden's powers, citing Salem's selection of her for the role.
Cinder: WHO ARE YOU TO CHALLENGE ME?! YOU ARE NOTHING! AN ALIEN! A RAT! YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO DEFY ME! THIS IS MY DESTINY! I AM THE MAIDEN! A CHOSEN ONE! I AM...!
(Sonic smacks her, then gets in her face with Tranquil Fury)
Sonic: You're a bully, and that's it. Amber, Fifer, they didn't deserve what you did to them. You take the easy, nasty way out and get the quick reward. Big whoop. I do things the right way. I help others because I want to. I try to help them become better. Who am I? I'm a guy who loves adventure and helping as many people as I can. I'm Sonic the Hedgehog.
  • Super Drowning Skills: As in canon, he cannot swim and dislikes water as a result. Still, it's noted that even at his worst he wasn't as bad as Neptune is.
  • Tranquil Fury: He drops his smile as he inflicts the above "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Cinder for her crimes.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Members of Salem's faction are baffled that a blue hedgehog is Eggman's nemesis. However, as the good doctor shows them, there's a reason why Sonic has earned constant hatred, and they really shouldn't underestimate him.

    Miles "Tails" Prower
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/idw045_tails01.png

A two-tailed fox who serves as one of Sonic's closest allies. He's also quite an esteemed technologist.

  • All the Other Reindeer: Shares with Jaune that he was bullied by the other foxes of his village for being born with two tails, and his intelligence only made the situation worse.
  • Child Prodigy: Built the Tornado when he was nine, and is already an Ace Pilot.
  • Composite Character: His backstory of being an orphan raised by Sonic is shared by his counterpart from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. The primary difference is cartoon Tails was raised from a baby while the fic sticks to their game canon meeting being just before Sonic 2.
  • Does Not Like Magic: While Tails knows magic is real, he doesn't like or trust it, seeing it as even more unreliable than Chaos energy.
  • Dual Wielding: His new weapon, Hurricane Gamma, has two energy swords made with Hard-Light Dust combined with a jetpack to boost his flight capabilities.
  • Foil: Is one to Qrow. Tails is Sonic's most loyal friend and companion, but Tails and Sonic treat each other as equals while Qrow is Ozpin's "most loyal lapdog". As they are foster brothers who care for and value each other's opinions and experiences. But it is not that Ozpin sees Qrow as his lesser, it's that Qrow sees Ozpin as his better due to his own lack of self-worth and trusts him above all else, even more than his own family.
  • The Lab Rat: He spends quite a lot of time in the lab, working on various inventions such as Plasma Dust.
  • The Smart Guy: He is the brain of the team, where even Sonic teases Tails that if his super-brain doesn't count as a power, then he doesn't know what else does. Best shown by the fact that he managed to integrate Dust into the Tornado's weapon systems within a week of learning it exists.

    Amy Rose
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/idw002_amy01_large.png

A fangirl and part-time resistance leader who deeply admires Sonic and fights with him alongside his friends.

  • Adaptational Seriousness: Amy still greatly admires Sonic to a degree, though her attitude towards major business is far less giddy than how her actions in canonical video games are usually portrayed.
  • Birds of a Feather:
    • With Nora Valkyrie - both are pink-themed and wield hammers as their signature weaponry. This escalates to referring to each other as the Hammer Harpies.
    • Later, she bonds with Pyrrha over how they both have seemingly unrequited romantic feelings for their team leaders.
  • Foil: Is one to Glynda. Amy is openly caring to others, while Glynda is strict on the surface, but the two of them care a great deal for those around them. They're also incredibly loyal to their leaders; though Amy is more out of romantic feelings towards Sonic while Glynda doesn't have these kind of feelings for Oz.
  • The Heart: Explicitly called this by Sonic when it comes to her role on the team. She's not as fast as Sonic, as strong as Knuckles, or as smart as Tails, but she always has a positive attitude and keeps them grounded.
  • I Hate Past Me: She used to be a full-on Stalker with a Crush towards Sonic, and while she still has feelings for him she's rather embarrassed and ashamed by how she acted.
  • Shipper on Deck: Seems to note the chemistry between Pyrrha and Jaune.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: Amy is typically identified as a member of her own separate team, Team Rose. Here, she's a member of Team Sonic instead.

    Knuckles the Echidna
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/knuckles_idw.png

One of Sonic's earliest rivals turned closest allies.

  • Badass Boast: When Roman Torchwick mocks him and his friends for not having Aura, and thinks that will make them easy targets, Knuckles delivers one after he no-sells a point-blank shot from Roman's cane. This also serves as a rephrase to his famous line from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022).
Knuckles: Do I look like I need Aura?
  • The Big Guy: He is the powerhouse in the team, with his physical strength being strong as Sonic's speed.
  • Composite Character: While primarily based on the video game version, Knuckles also shares a similar backstory to his movie counterpart, where the rest of his tribe died fighting an enemy back while a young Knuckle was forced to stay behind by his father, ultimately becoming The Last of His Kind. The main difference is that here, they died defending Angel Island from marauders.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: To drive into Yang how her fighting style is flawed, he beats her in a weapons-free spar without her landing a single blow, and when she uses her Semblance he just catches it.
  • Dual Wielding: He gets himself a pair of axes named Galatine like his Arthurian counterpart Sir Gawain.
  • Foil: Is one to Ironwood. Both can be incredibly stubborn, and their homes float in the sky, not to mention the enormous responsibilities they bear (one being the leader of Remnant's only military, and the other being the guardian of the most powerful gemstone in his world). But their development goes in opposite directions. Knuckles had to step outside of Angel Island and see more of the world in order to start living, which led to him opening up and befriending Sonic, Tails, Amy, and everyone else; as well as experiencing new things that helped him to grow and develop, as well as save the world. But above all, he's willing to admit he made a mistake and does what he can to set things right. Ironwood is the opposite. When things went back, he locked himself down, went to Atlas and closed it, putting everything on his own shoulders and blocking out any chance to reason or make amends.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He might have a bad temper, however, he doesn't approve that Beacon allows some kids fight monsters. Even when Glynda corrects him on how Beacon works, he understands but doesn't mean he'll have to like it, which Ozpin both understands and was glad to hear it.
  • Taught by Experience: He's learned from all the times others have tricked him, and now makes sure he has all the sides of the story before coming to a decision, as he does with Blake.

Team Dark

Another group of protagonists who, along with Sonic's group, are sucked into the portal leading to Remnant.

    As a Whole
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/team_dark.png

  • Actor Allusion: Iron117Prime once again works with a pair of closely related, robot-aided protagonists voiced by Kirk Thornton and Karen Strassman.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The three deliver this to Torchwick as he's piloting the Egg Centaur during the Breach. Rouge even taunts him over his lackluster piloting skills.
  • Good Is Not Nice: They're kind enough to go around fighting crime until they reunite with Team Sonic. Didn't stop 'em from leaving the crooks horribly pummeled and hospitalized.
  • Superhero Packing Heat: Unlike Team Sonic's distaste for guns outside of the Cyclone's firepower, this group has much less hesitance with using firepower as needed. Justified as Rouge is a trained government agent, Shadow learned to use firepower to fend off an alien invasion once and Omega is nothing but a load of weaponry.

    Shadow the Hedgehog
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/idw033_shadow01_9.png

One of Sonic's rivals, best known as the "Ultimate Life Form", who was created with alien technology.

  • Berserk Button: Is normally quite composed, if rather surly, but Mimic taking on Maria's form royally pisses him off after a brief moment of shock.
  • Character Exaggeration: While Shadow does have a dislike for humans after what happened to Maria, he usually keeps it to himself in the games. He's significantly more open about it here. The situation with the Faunus seems to have helped drag those issues back to the forefront, but dialogue suggests he was like this even before then.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: He delivers one to both Qrow and Winter in a three-way sparing match. Shadow manages to stay in complete control of the whole fight, eliminates both of them and manages to learn all he needs from both of them.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite being a bit of The Social Darwinist, he does step in when he feels Jaune's situation with Cardin is too lame to just let him handle alone. He also acknowledges that there's no shame in stepping down if one feels they're not ready for a position and acknowledges The Power of Friendship by telling Jaune he should be willing to seek help in his efforts.
  • Good Is Not Nice:
    • In Dark Jaunedice, he puts a despondent Jaune (in a rough manner) through his paces in an effort for the latter to recognize his convictions.
    • As mentioned below, he has no issues with brutal interrogation tactics to obtain information, as seen with both Junior and Torchwick.
  • Hate at First Sight: Downplayed; while he believes Ozpin and his group are hiding secrets from them, he seems to dislike Ironwood the most when they first meet.
  • High-Altitude Interrogation: In Investigations and Discoveries, he dangles Junior off the top of a fire escape on the side of a building while questioning him about Eggman, the White Fang, and Roman Torchwick. After Junior points out that a fall from that height wouldn't kill him, Shadow just says he is counting on it and lets him go, causing him to break his legs from the fall.
  • Humans Are Bastards: He's not pleased that even on another planet, humans still hold discriminatory values, though he does note that the Faunus aren't blameless in the conflict given the terrorist actions of the White Fang. Sonic even asks Weiss if Shadow gave her the 'all humans suck' speech, showing that Shadow goes into these kinds of speeches often.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Shadow is surly, abrasive, blunt, easy to anger, and brooding. He's also skeptical of new recruits and willing to do more brutal tactics compared with Team Sonic. However, he always acts in defense of the innocent and desires equity and fairness for all. And despite his rough exterior, he does care for all his friends and charges.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He tends to be rather callous when speaking to others, but his actual reasoning is rarely wrong.
    • As brutal as his callout to her was, he was right that Weiss' insistence that she is a victim of the White Fang is also used by her as an excuse to dismiss the valid points the organization has about the treatment of Faunus. Her acknowledging that they have good reason to hate humans forms a part of her character development.
    • Asking Tails to add a program to get a full schematic of Beacon to his antivirus counter to Eggman's infiltrator is seen by the former as a breach of trust with Ozpin. However Shadow points out that Ozpin is clearly keeping secrets from them, and they need to have a better idea of what Eggman is after in Beacon to more effectively fight him, something the fox can't deny.
  • The Mentor: Downplayed compared to Sonic's relationship with Ruby, but he acts as this to Jaune at times, being the first one to call him out on his misplaced pride and give him solid (if caustic) advice on how to improve. He also nods in approval at seeing the blonde's growth as both a leader and a fighter.
  • One-Man Army: While all the Sonic characters qualify, he deserves special mention for his actions in Freight Train Fight, managing to single-handedly hold off the entire Grimm horde Eggman draws towards Vale. By the time the train reaches Vale, he managed to halve their numbers, and wasn't even tired afterward, only retreating to get the others off the train with Chaos Control.
  • Properly Paranoid: He had his suspicions of Qrow when he first appears in Chapter 27, and his fears of him being a part of Ozpin's conspiracy gets confirmed during their three-way duel with Winter. This also extends to him being distrustful of Ozpin's group as a whole, and certainly not without reason, as he tells Teams Sonic, RWBY, and JNPR to keep their actions out of his sight, less Ozpin, Ironwood, or the villains learn and derail their plans.
  • Sword and Gun: His sword, Arondight conceals a hidden semi-automatic machine gun (which can be separated) that allows Shadow to wield both weapons simultaneously.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: While he and everyone else will work alongside Ozpin’s group he can tell they are keeping secrets from them and begins to see them as untrustworthy. He seems to have this the most with Ironwood who he believes will make the situation worse.
  • Ultimate Life Form: The Trope Namer. The narration of the story constantly refers to him as this, and Rouge eventually shares this title with everyone else in "Freight Train Fight" when Shadow stays behind to hold off a horde of Grimm.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Reassures Yang in Chapter 22 after the last few chapters of the story wearing down her confidence.
  • You Remind Me of X: Pietro and Penny remind him of Gerald and Maria, respectively.

    Rouge the Bat
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/idw032_rouge01.png

Often a designated Team Mom, who also serves as a professional thief and spy.

  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Delivers one to Neo of all people during their fight in Freight Train Fight, who didn't even manage to land a single hit. She also bears the distinction of being the first to make the young woman lose her cool, and to add insult to injury, finished her off with sleight of hand and a well-placed bomb.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: When Team Sonic faces the Ace-Ops in a sparing match, Rouge offers to be on Sonic's team so both teams have five members each.
  • Impossible Theft: Manages to steal Weiss's earrings... while she's wearing them, and without Weiss noticing until after the fact.
  • Mix-and-Match Weapon: Rouge's Purple Hearts are a pair of heart-themed bladed boomerangs that also combine into a large broadsword.
  • No-Sell: During her fight against Neo in Chapter 14, Neo uses her Semblance on Rouge to attack her. To her surprise, Rouge heard her coming thanks to her enhanced hearing.
Rouge: "My ears do more than frame my face, sweetie. (points to her bat-ears) You might not talk much, but I can hear you breathe."
  • Running Gag: She constantly steals items from Remnants inhabitants stuff, most notably Weiss.
  • "Take That!" Kiss: During the spar between Team Sonic and the Ace-Ops, while Rogue is fighting Marrow, while the two are locked against each other, Rouge suddenly kisses him on the cheek. This surprises Marrow and distracts him long enough for Rouge to grab him and throw him out of the ring.

    E-123 Omega
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/idw019_e123omega_01_0.png

The last of Eggman's E-series, who rebelled against his creator and works with Team Dark.

  • Blood Knight: Omega is constantly focused on the destruction of his enemies (mainly Eggman) and finding new and better ways of destroying them. A quick way of earning his approval is to demonstrate your destructive capabilities.
  • The Comically Serious: A lot of the humor surrounding him involves his deadpan delivery of both joy and rage, such as him literally declaring "Exclamation of enthusiasm!" as a battle cry when he and Nora join a battle, or when he sees Zwei in action and stoically dubs him a valuable addition to the war against Eggman.
  • Crossover Power Acquisition: Integrates Dust into his arsenal shortly after arriving in Remnant.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: He explains to JNPR that the reason he fights against Eggman, despite having been created by him, is because shortly after he was built Eggman imprisoned him with the false task of guarding an amnesiac Shadow to prevent his escape. Ironically, the reason Eggman imprisoned him in the first place was because he was afraid that Omega would rebel against him, like his predecessor Gamma did.
  • No-Sell: Neo's Semblance does not fool his sensors. The same applies with Emerald's for that matter.

Team RWBY

    Ruby Rose
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rwby_ruby.png
"My whole family were Huntsmen. My dad, my uncle, my mom...they were all Huntsment, my uncle Qrow still is. They've done so much' I always hear stories about all the good they've done and the people they've helped. I guess I just wanted to do the same thing...it's so amazing."

Ruby is one of the titular main protagonists of the series alongside Sonic. An up-and-coming student of Beacon Academy who trains two years earlier than normal to become a Huntress.

  • Red Is Heroic: As a Huntress that wears red clothes, which match Sonic's blue fur.
  • Skewed Priorities: She’s more mad that Metal Sonic took Crescent Rose than concerned about the danger he poses with her and Weiss' weapons.
  • Young and in Charge: She's the youngest member of her team, and their leader, something which surprises everyone, even herself.

    Weiss Schnee
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/weiss.png
"Which is why I'm here, to try and set things right. If I took a job in Atlas, it wouldn't have changed anything. I'm not going to let my father destroy my family name for the sake of his own personal greed. I want to be more like my grandfather, someone who fights for the people and bring honor back to my family."

A student of Beacon Academy and the heiress to the Schnee Dust Company.

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Is skeptical when she's told about the time the heroes went into the Twilight cage and years passed by while they were in there for a much shorter time. Yang snarkily points out that, compared to Sonic, it's not that far-fetched.
  • Butt-Monkey: Weiss hilariously suffers quite a lot thanks to Rouge, plus the bat gets a lot of amusement from it.
    • Subjected to this in Badges, Burdens, and Bonds when Rouge managed to steal her earrings while the heiress was wearing them (plus her sword and tiara), much to her disbelief.
    • In Dark Jaunedice, while Rouge didn't steal any materials to make her weapon, she nicked Weiss's nail file for amusement.
    • When Ruby presents her ideas in a binder in Alliances Under the Shattered Moon like in canon, Weiss recognizes the binder being hers. A confused Ruby mentioned that Rouge lent it to her, leading the irritated heiress to put two and two together.
    • In The Vytal Festival, Rouge nicks her credit card to pay for the group's lunch, and once again steals Myrtenaster.
  • Recurring Element: Her ice abilities with Myrtenester make her the staple ice-powered character. This time, the ice powers are back into someone heroic. And that's not going into the semantics regarding her family...
  • Running Gag: Much to Weiss's irritation, Rouge tends to steal her stuff.
  • Wake-Up Call: Due to her nature starting off as a haughty heiress to the Schnee Dust Company, it took two of these to get her act together. The first was when Shadow revealed to her through an envelope of images the brutal atrocities committed by her company. The second is when Fifer immediately pleads about their treatment under the humans, which ultimately starts up her character arc of desiring to be a better company leader in the future.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: Her fight with a Bioid of Jacques was a wake-up regarding her fighting techniques. That she needs more practice fighting without her sword as she lacks the finesse to use her semblance as well without it.
  • What Would X Do?: When working on her Summoning with Winter, Weiss thinks about what Sonic would do in her situation to try and get past her block.

    Blake Belladonna
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blake_6.png
"I couldn't stand it so...I left and wanted to become a Huntress. They were regarded as the most noble warriors in the world, always fighting for good. But I never really thought past that. When I leave the academy...what will I...how can I undo so many years of hate?

A quiet, no-nonsense Faunus student and a member of Ruby's team.

  • Defector from Decadence: She quit the White Fang once their methods became violent, but she still believes in their original peaceful objectives.
  • Trauma Button: Adam's former self was a hard thing to reckon with when a Bioid used some information from Adam against her. That her hope left her open to being killed, and her rage and betrayal at this really hurt her.

    Yang Xiao Long
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yang_resize.png
"But...I also want to know more about my mother. What kind of person was she? Why did she leave? If my dad and uncle won't tell me about it, I'll find the answers myself. Even if I have to scour all of Remnant just to find her grave."

The daughter of Taiyang Xiao Long and Raven Branwen, as well as Ruby's older half-sister and teammate.

  • Actor Allusion: Once again, a character voiced by Ami Koshimizu loses her first battle against a silent second-in-command from the visiting forces in an Iron117Prime fanfic.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Losing to both Metal Sonic and Knuckles pretty much puts her in a more low-headed state similar to her canon self after she lost her arm.
  • Adaptational Badass: Knuckles proposes to Yang different ways to use her Semblance: using it to boost her defense rather than offense, limiting how much she uses during battles, and storing some of her energy from battles for later use. So far, the all three options have shown promise.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She's very protective of Ruby, even if she wishes her sister was more assertive and social.
  • Composite Character: Fans of the Archie Comics might find her character to be a mix of both Antoine and Bunnie. She takes after Bunnie in terms of her hand-to-hand fighting skills (anyone familiar with RWBY canon knows that Yang loses her arm and gains a robotic one; Bunnie is almost completely robotic) while also taking up Antoine's character arc during the Grimm Eclipse saga.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: She is on the receiving end of one during a sparring match with Knuckles. Knuckles challenges her to a weapons-free spar to show her the flaw in her fighting style relying too much on her Semblance, with the conditions that all she needs to do to win is land one solid hit on him (as in a blow he does not block, parry, or catch) while he will win when she is no longer able to stand. Yang fails to land any hits on Knuckles while he continuously lands devastating blows on her, and actually catching her last ditch Semblance-enhanced punch before sending her flying, revealing he had been holding back the entire match.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Yang has a bit of a temper, but is prone to losing herself to her rage that Knuckles realizes it can be used against her. Sure enough, during her fight with one of Mimic's Bioids, the Bioid turns into Ruby and taunts Yang during their fight, and when the real Ruby shows up the Bioid makes Yang snap, causing her to attack the real Ruby. Had Pyrrha and Shadow not been there, there was a very real possibility that Yang could've hurt or even killed her own sister.
  • Humble Pie: After realizing that Knuckles was right about her fighting flaws, Yang swallows her pride and asks Knuckles to help train her to become a much better fighter.
  • Incompletely Trained: It's noted that part of the reason for her overreliance on her Semblance is that her father apparently only gave her basic training in hand-to-hand fighting, and nothing more, at least from what Ruby could see.
  • Misery Builds Character: Her entire session with Knuckles regarding the misuse of her power is pretty much intended to become this.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Thankfully, more like what did I almost do, but after Mimic goads her into attacking while disguised as Ruby, she's horrified that he nearly tricked her into attacking the real Ruby with the full power of her Semblance. It takes her a few moments to respond afterwards.
  • Promoted to Parent: It's mentioned that she was the one who mainly raised Ruby in the aftermath of their mother's death, as their father 'shut down' for a while, and Qrow could only make the occasional visit. It's also deconstructed since Sonic and the others note that her team leader seeing her as most kids do their parents (always reliable and undefeatable), feeds into Yang's overreliance on her Semblance under the belief that her current approach to combat will always be enough to get her through a fight.
  • Sore Loser: She has a very bitter attitude when she is completely beaten by Knuckles in a sparing match when he tries to show her how relying too much on her Semblance and purposely allowing herself to take hits is a bad idea.
  • Temporarily Exaggerated Trait: Is more Hot-Blooded than usual throughout the Grimm Eclipse arc more or less due to Knuckles' initial influence on her.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Knuckles helps her come up with several new applications for her Semblance.
  • Wake-Up Call: During their first few battles against Eggman's forces, Yang slowly begins to exhibit a bit more aggression, especially concerning her Semblance. Knuckles notices this, to the point of having a spar with her and reprimanding her that such behavior towards her Semblance will ultimately come to bite her in the future.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: Her fight with Mimic's Bioid in Ruby's shape, which happens not long after her spar with Knuckles as mentioned above, nearly results in her hurting or killing the real Ruby as Mimic not only spotted the same flaws in Yang's fighting style Knuckles did, he also took advantage of her anger that had been growing during the arc.

Team JNPR

    Jaune Arc
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/beacon_jaune_3.png

Leader of team JNPR, who wishes to become a great Huntsman and make his ancestors proud.

  • Character Development: Becomes more serious and competent in his role as a leader as the story progresses, offering support on and off the battlefield to his teammates. By End of the Line he decides it's okay if he Can't Catch Up in terms of combat prowess so long as he can still help them with his tactics.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Even as his skills improve over time, he's still the worst of his friends in terms of combat prowess, and he knows it.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Subtle compared to the rest of his peers, but his tactical skills improve more than his combat ones as the story progresses, earning him the approval of Shadow in an encounter with Grimm.

    Nora Valkyrie
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/beacon_nora.png

A hyperactive fight happy girl who maintains a cheerful demeanor at all times. Is Ren's partner and childhood friend.

  • Birds of a Feather: Like Amy Rose, she too was delighted to meet a fellow hammer wielder - leading to both pink-clad girls to refer themselves as the Hammer Harpies.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: A conversation with Omega inspires Nora to install a bear trap into Magnhild, which she does with Tails's help.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Is uncharacteristically moody when JNPR and Omega are investigating the poorer parts of Vale to search for the White Fang, and outright snaps at Jaune when he questions it. Makes sense that it serves as a nasty reminder of her own sad childhood.

    Pyrrha Nikos
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pyrrha_3.png

Champion fighter and partner to Jaune. Her combat skills are matched only by her kind nature.

  • Birds of a Feather: Bonds with Amy over having seemingly unrequited romantic feelings for their team leaders.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Her existing Polarity Semblance which allows her to manipulate metal becomes a Downplayed version of this in the context of Dr. Eggman. As he builds robots mainly made of metal, she can pretty much manipulate those robots into malfunctioning or slightly breaking up. Case in point, Metal Sonic would have continued moping the floor on everyone with Crescent Rose and Myrtenaster had she not use her power to get the weapons off.
Sonic: (thinking to himself) Eggman, I think I found your worst nightmare.

    Lie Ren
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/beacon_ren.png

Nora's childhood friend and partner. He is stoic and focused, yet clearly cares for his friends, and gets along great with his partner, despite their wildly different personalities.

  • The Quiet One: Ren isn't exactly the most talkative person, and he has had the least amount of dialogue in the story.
  • Trauma Button: Seeing the centauroid Beowulf/Deathstalker hybrid reminds him of how his village was destroyed.

Team SSSN

    Sun Wukong
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maya_sun.png

A monkey Faunus and leader of Team SSSN. Originally from Vacuo, he immigrated to Mistral, where he became a student at Haven Academy. He has a romantic interest in Blake and assists Team RWBY and Team Sonic in investigating the activities of the White Fang and Eggman. His Semblance, Via Sun, lets him generate clones of light. His weapons are known as Ruyi Bang and Jingu Bang, each of which are a pair of shotgun nunchucks that can combine to form a bo staff.

    Neptune Vasilias
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maya_neptune.png

The fourth member of Team SSSN, Neptune often hangs out with Sun. He takes an interest in Weiss and also assists Team RWBY in their search for the White Fang and Eggman. Neptune fights with a trident that can also function as a rifle that fires electric bolts, nick-named Tri-Hard by Sun. His Semblance is hydrokinesis, letting him control and manipulate water if he touches it.

  • Super Drowning Skills: As usual, he's quite jittery around water to the point of coming up with excuses to avoid dealing with it. Sonic handles it better.

    Sage Ayana
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sage_ayana.png

The third member of Team SSSN, Sage wields a large broadsword called Pilgrim in battle.

    Scarlet David
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scarlet_david.png

The second member of Team SSSN, Scarlet fights with a cutlass and pistol called Hook and Darling. His Semblance lets him temporarily glide.

Team CFVY

    Coco Adel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/coco_adel.png

The leader of Team CFVY and fellow Beacon Academy student. She fights with Gianduja, a purse that can transform into a minigun. Her Semblance "Hype" allows her to amplify the effects of Dust in an area around her.

    Fox Alistair
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fox_alistair.png

A member of Team CFVY and a fellow Beacon Academy student. He uses martial arts to fight with a pair of wrist-mounted blades named Sharp Retribution. His Semblance is short-range telepathy, letting him keep up mental conversations with his allies.

    Velvet Scarlatina
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/velvet_scarlatina.png

A rabbit Faunus attending Beacon Academy who dabbles in photography and is a member of Team CFVY. Her weapon, Anesidora, is a camera that can convert images into hard-light projections using Dust. She combines this with her Semblance "Photographic Memory", which allows her to perfectly recall a subject's fighting style from memory.

  • Karmic Jackpot: Sonic stands up for her when she was being bullied by Cardin's clique. She and her team indirectly return the favor by battling the Egg-Rex alongside Team SSSN for good measure.

    Yatsuhashi Daichi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yatsuhashi_daichi.png

A Beacon Academy student, he is the tallest member of team CFVY and one of the tallest characters in the show, fighting with a massive Zweihänder named Fulcrum. His Semblance allows him to induce amnesia, with the effect of taking more memories (and taking longer to regain those memories) the longer he can maintain it, although he may only be scratching the surface with his Semblance.

Beacon Academy

    Professor Ozpin
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maya_ozpin_6.jpg

A hero from ages long past who was cursed with having two souls, and continues to fight against his archenemy, Salem. Currently occupies the position of Headmaster of Beacon Academy.

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: For a man who knows that the gods have left the planet and has been fighting his former wife for thousands of years, Oz was oddly skeptical about the possibility of alien life until it showed up in his town one night.
  • Benevolent Conspiracy: Oz is leader of an secret organization that hides the secrets of the Grimm and Remnant's history, but Eggman's presence pretty much throws many of their intentions out of the window. Suddenly, not only do they have to deal with the secrets they're trying to keep, but their dark history would only be amplified with an Outside-Context Problem keeping them in on the ropes.
  • Fatal Flaw: Excessive caution, bordering on being Improperly Paranoid, General Arrogance. Despite doing everything he can to keep the forces that threatens the world at bay, when presented with a game changer in the form of Sonic and his allies he is very reluctant to bring them into the fold out of fear it would somehow lead to negative consequences. He persists in this mindset even as they begin to suspect he is hiding something from them, having already worked out the existence of something controlling the Grimm, starting to drive a wedge between himself and powerful allies with nothing to gain from it, to say nothing of the Beacon students they've bonded with. Salem outrights spells out to Eggman that Ozpin's paranoia alone will do far more damage to his relationship with Sonic and company than she ever could, and she won't even have to lift a finger to help him screw it up despite him ironically fearing just that.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: As much as he wishes he could share the existence of what he's fighting against with people outside his closest acquaintances, thousands of years of failed attempts at stopping her have left him jaded and reluctant to reveal his secrets, even to those who would accept them but only grow distrustful of his secrecy.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When confronted by Team Dark in the vault and held hostage by Shadow, realizing that he along with his Inner Circle stand no chance, Ozpin answers their questions about Amber and the Maidens. And later gives in to Shadow and Rouge's demands to tell everyone the truth of what's going on.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Downplayed. He's surprisingly quick to accept Sonic and his friends and allows them to help him in both training the students and fighting the Grimm, but his paranoia and secrecy keep him from letting them in on the darker secrets of Remnant well past the point they're already figuring them out themselves.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Salem herself spells it out to Eggman that Ozpin's personal fear and paranoia born from his thousands of years of failure will make him reluctant to tell Sonic and company anything about her, and in turn fuel their own mistrust of his apparent shadiness which suits her purposes just fine.
  • Too Good to Be True: Word of God cites this as one of the reasons for Ozpin's reluctance in telling Sonic and his friends about Salem. While a part of Ozpin does hope that Sonic and the others are capable of defeating Salem, the pragmatic part (which is elevated by his fear of Salem) feels this.

    Glynda Goodwitch
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/glynda_goodwitch.png

Deputy Headmaster of Beacon and number two only to Ozpin himself.

Other allies

    Penny Polendina
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/beacon_penny_9.png

A very odd girl that Weiss ran into near the docks, Penny is a participant in the Vytal Festival tournament. She very quickly becomes attached to Ruby, who unwittingly called her "friend". She is later revealed to be a robot designed with help from General Ironwood, unique in that she can generate an Aura. Penny fights with a collection of swords tied to her by micro-thin strings called Floating Array. She can use the swords to generate a powerful laser blast.

  • Big Damn Heroes: In addition to the battle at the docks, she helps Sonic, Goodwitch, Port, and Oobleck in the battle against Metal Sonic during the Breach.
  • Odd Friendship: After the battle at the docks, she is shown to get along very well with Omega, with the two of them having a casual conversation together. This also in part serves as foreshadowing to Penny's own Robotic Reveal.
  • Robotic Reveal: Investigations and Discoveries showcases that the hands she used when blocking a nearby truck are scarred, revealing the metal inside of her.

    Qrow Branwen

Qrow Branwen

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/qrow_v6_01_profilepic.png
"Because a Huntsman is responsible for protecting the whole world. Creatures of Grimm, terrorists and criminals, those guys don't punch timeclocks either. You'd be surprised at the kind of stuff that goes on outside the kingdom's boarders. It's a lot to tackle, and somebody has to be there."

Ruby and Yang's uncle, who taught Ruby how to use her scythe. He used to teach at Signal Academy and studied at Beacon as a member of Team STRQ, becoming a member of Ozpin's inner circle and his informant in the field.

  • The Alcoholic: According to Glynda, Qrow's always drunk. Shadow stealing his flask and dumping it out in the middle of their spar as a taunt pisses him off and makes him start taking Shadow seriously.
  • Papa Wolf: Cares deeply about his nieces, especially Ruby, and actively tries to keep them out of Ozpin's conspiracy for their own safety, even as it becomes more and more clear that they're going to need to know soon. Part of his distrust and dislike of Sonic and company, besides Underestimating Badassery, is the fact that they're dragging Ruby and Yang faster and further into this secret war than he ever wanted them to be.
  • Underestimating Badassery: A recurring issue with Qrow is his tendency to severely underestimate Earth's heroes and villains: While he acknowledges Team Sonic and Dark's strength, he doesn't believe that they're capable of defeating Salem and doubts their claims of defeating beings both on par with and even worse than her. On the flip side, he refuses to even entertain the idea that Eggman is a threat comparable to Salem.

    Pietro Polendina
An elderly engineer who is one of Atlas' most respected scientists. He built Penny's body and considers her his daughter.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Compared to his debut in Volume 7, he's called to Beacon by Ironwood after the events of Volume 2 to help Tails study Eggman's tech as well as new forms of Dust.

Kingdom of Atlas

One of the Four kingdoms of Remnant, located in the south of Solitas and to the northeast of the old Kingdom of Mantle.
    General Ironwood
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/beacon_ironwood_2.png
The strength-obsessed Commander in Chief of the Atlesian military, as well as the Headmaster of Atlas Academy. He is a staunch ally of Ozpin in his war against Salem, and is willing (perhaps too willing sometimes) to provide his army to help.

     Winter Schnee

Winter Schnee

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/beacon_winter.png
"If that's what you want, then do it. It's your choice, your life. But no matter what, I'm here for you."

Weiss's older sister, and the right hand of General Ironwood in the Atlesian ranks. She is also the top fighter in the army.

  • Number Two: She is Ironwood's right hand and one of the best Huntresses under his command.

    Ace Operatives / Ace-Ops
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2020_05_06_at_100455_am.png
A group of Elite Hunters and Huntresses from the Atlas Kingdom. They consist of Clover Ebi, Elm Ederne, Vine Zeki, and Harriet Bree.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: They debut in Volume 7 of the original RWBY, but they make their appearance in the first chapter, except for Marrow, which is set in the same timeline as Volume 1. In fact, they're the first RWBY characters Sonic meets in the entire story. Marrow later joins the team by the time they show up for the Vytal Festival.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: It's revealed in You Learn Something New that the reason why Harriet wasn't too fond of losing stems from the fact she lost her friend Tortuga when an early Atlesian Paladin went on a rampage.
  • Graceful Loser: Compared to Harriet, the rest of the Ace-Ops are accepting of their defeat in their match with Team Sonic and Rouge.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Harriet assumes that either her Speed Semblance will be enough to catch Sonic, or that his Aura/stamina will give out before he can reach Vale. Suffice it to say, she's proven wrong on both counts.
  • Sore Loser: Harriet doesn't take losing to Sonic well. TWICE.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Part of the reason Sonic has such an easy time evading them is because they are caught off guard at his capabilities, and Word of God confirms that they weren't going all out.

Haven Academy

    Leonardo Lionheart
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/professor_lionheart.png
Headmaster of Haven Academy.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: He along with the other headmasters are introduced earlier though Ozpin’s communication screens when discussing about Sonic’s group and Eggman’s threat.

Shade Academy

     Theodore
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/theodorerbc1.jpg
Headmaster of Shade Academy.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: He along with the other headmasters are introduced earlier though Ozpin’s communication screens when discussing about Sonic’s group and Eggman’s threat.

Eggman Empire

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/idw_eggmanempire_logo_outline_resized.png

One of the main antagonists of the series. The infamous Eggman Empire has now set its sights to conquer Remnant and uniting it under Dr. Eggman's rule.

    As a Whole
  • Cool Starship: The Space Colony ARK serves as their primary base of operations, along with the Eggman Fleet.
  • Expy: They're put in the same role as the Foot Clan from Worlds Collide and the Decepticons from Code Prime, being the dimension-faring conquerors who visit a new world in the hopes of domination. They also have access to space-age technology, such as giant spaceships and intergalactic fleets, which are pitted against a universe that isn't space-capable yet. Time will tell if they're successful though.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Their arrival is something that Ozpin or Salem could never have predicted. Even worse, Dust's inability to work outside of Remnant's atmosphere means that the Remnantians have no space travel capabilities, and thus cannot reach Eggman's base on the Ark, while he can strike at them more-or-less at will.

Dr. Ivo Robotnik / Dr. Eggman
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/idw015_eggman_01_4.png
"Hello, Remnant. Oh, the plans I have for you."

Sonic's arch-nemesis. Following consistent defeats at the hands of the hedgehog throughout the years, he intends to establish the Eggman Empire over Remnant.

  • Actually a Doombot: Manages to pull this trick in Chapter 11.
  • Adaptational Villainy: As per tradition with most Iron117Prime fanfic villains, let's just say he takes a lot more from the IDW iteration of the mad doctor than any other one.
  • Arch-Enemy: To Sonic, in classic fashion. In fact, their constant battle against each other is what ultimately drives him to go to another dimension and reestablish his empire there.
  • Attack of the Town Festival: Sonic notes that he'll likely attack the Vytal Festival, knowing how he loves the spotlight.
  • Attention Whore: Sonic even calls him a diva, noting how he loves drawing attention to himself.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Chapter 6 reveals that he's teamed up with Salem.
  • Bullying the Dragon: Despite having half of the Fall Maiden's power, Eggman doesn't take Cinder seriously; he also isn't afraid to physically attack her, like when he thought she blew up Sonic. Cinder believes this is because Eggman has something other than Metal Sonic that can stop her.
  • Crazy-Prepared: To the point that he expects Sonic to go to a new world and continue their battle there.
  • Didn't Think This Through: While he can be Crazy-Prepared in terms of traps and schemes to stop Sonic from interfering, Rouge outright says that he tends not to think too well in the long term, hence why the heroes have had to intervene when he runs into Evil Is Not a Toy issues.
  • Emperor Scientist: Leads the Eggman Empire, a legion of robotic Badniks.
  • Evil Genius: Befitting of Dr. Eggman, of course, with his robotic fleet of Badniks and other robots, as well as several gunships.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Sonic lampshades how he tends to try and mess with great powers and forces in his quest for world domination, only for him to lose control and force Sonic to clean up his mess. Sonic even tells Ozpin that no one else having ever been able to control the Grimm in the past will in no way stop Eggman from trying himself.
  • I Gave My Word: This is how Eggman gets people to follow him; by promising to give them what they want and making due on it.
    • In Chapter 7, Eggman offers his army and the seven Chaos Emeralds to Salem so they can take over or destroy the planet. In exchange for finally destroying Sonic, of course. Salem agrees to the alliance, mostly because she wants to use the emeralds to get revenge on Ozpin and the Brother Gods.
    • He gets the White Fang to help him by giving them weapons for their war against humanity, and he gets Adam's cooperation by using Metal Sonic to hunt down any deserters. Later, after the Mt. Glenn incident, he promises him that he'll put in a good word for Adam to join Salem's inner circle (without naming her) if he does well in taking down Beacon.
    • Eggman keeps Roman and Neo in line with their plans for global conquest by swearing that they'll rule the first city that falls (Vale) and have a seat at the table with the rest of Salem's faction. Cinder gives Eggman a look at that last part.
  • Improbably High I.Q.: Eggman has 300 IQ points on his belt, Sonic even mentioned the score to Ozpin.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Is a little irked at Orbot and Cubot saying that This Isn't Heaven on the basis that he's there as well.
  • Multiversal Conqueror: He's back to being this after Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic Rush, and Sonic Generations, if his intentions for Remnant are any indication. At the very least he's interested in the Grimm, having found out about them somehow. Until it's revealed to be in an alliance with Salem and her forces.
  • Neck Lift: He pulls one off on Cinder for trying to kill Sonic without his permission.
  • Never Recycle Your Schemes: When the heroes are investigating Mountain Glenn for the second time, it's noted that Eggman never returns to his old bases, and prefers to discard his old tech as "obsolete junk" and leave it to gather dust while he moves onto something new.
  • Not Hyperbole: When Eggman says that he has a 300-point IQ, he means it, Sonic even mentioning the score to Ozpin.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: In chapter 11, he makes it clear to Cinder on no uncertain terms that only he may kill Sonic, and no one else.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In Chapter 6, Team Dark discusses how odd it is that he hasn't made any claims at world domination yet even months after their arrival. This hints at the level of his involvement in the internal workings of RWBY's rogues' gallery.
  • Properly Paranoid:
    • Eggman shoots down Cinder's claim of killing Sonic because he's been through worse situations. He's proven right when he shows her a feed of her fight with Sonic, Tails, and Shadow, and they survived her dust explosion.
    • Eggman's paranoia pays off again in Chapter 12 when he sends Metal Sonic to help Cinder because he knows she'll overestimate herself again. Shadow and Omega nearly caught her when she tried to upload the virus to the CCT, and they would've succeeded if Metal didn't come to help.
  • Seen It All: He is not the slightest bit fazed by the Grimm or Salem herself due to his many experiences with similar forces in the past.
  • Stout Strength: Despite his overweight physique. He easily manhandled Cinder when her back was turned, surprising her with sheer physical strength.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: He gains an interest in crushing Ruby after seeing her similarities to Sonic.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: He tells Cinder that, if he wanted to, he could simply kill Sonic with the resources at his disposal, but he doesn't due to his ego.

    Metal Sonic
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/idw026_eggforces01_metalsonic_0.png
"Just you wait, my loathsome copy. Nothing can prepare you for what will come next."

A robotic doppelgänger of Sonic created by Dr. Eggman as a powerful killing machine and bound to his will.

  • The Ace: Of all the robots Dr. Eggman has created, Metal Sonic has been the most consistently effective against the good doctor's enemies. In the first chapter, he was able to match both Sonic and Shadow at the same time.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: He upgrades at some point to have one of these popping out of his arm.
  • Bullying the Dragon: Metal Sonic almost tried to rip Roman's arm off after the crime boss thought it was a good idea to get up in his face and lecture him about who's in charge.
  • Expy: His silent tendencies as well as being the second-highest ranking of the visiting evil forces is reminiscent of Soundwave from the author's previous work.
  • No Mouth: Like most incarnations of Metal Sonic, he has no mouth and can't talk in his base form; he can only "speak" by internal thoughts.
  • Robot Me: Of Sonic, obviously.
  • Sinister Surveillance: Spies on the Beacon Entrance Exam in Chapter 3 and on the heroes when they defeat and capture Cinder and her group in Chapter 30.
  • Sword and Gun: His upgrades on Remnant include having a blade come out of one arm and a gun out of the other.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: During Chapter 15, Metal takes note of Penny and quickly realizes she isn't human, deducing she's either an android or a cyborg, and keeps his discovery to himself for the time being.

    Orbot and Cubot
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/idw015_eggforces01b_orbotcubo.png

Two robots consistently serve as part of Eggman's daily routine. Firmly loyal to the mad scientist, though their odds at success are questionable or depend on Eggman's schemes.

  • Bumbling Sidekick: They're villainous henchmen with a rather keen sense of humor.
  • Pass the Popcorn: Brings some snacks to watch Ruby and Weiss's fight with Neon and Flynt... until Orbot reminds him that as robots they can't eat, upon which he dumps it all on the floor, to Eggman's annoyance.
  • Servile Snarker: While they do everything Dr. Eggman tells them to, they are not shy about poking their creator about his numerous defeats at Sonic's hands and the tendency for his own plans to blow up in his face.
  • This Isn't Heaven: After Eggman sends his fleet to Remnant when the two of them wake up they note that it can't be Heaven because he's there as well, prompting Eggman to point out that he's sitting right there.

Salem's Faction

One of the two main antagonists of the series. This insidious group are seeking the Relics from the Maidens and use their power for their own purposes.

    In General
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Played with. The entire faction including Salem makes their proper debut in Chapter 6, coinciding with the final episode of Volume 1. In the original, Cinder and Roman make their debut in the first episode of Volume 1 (though Cinder and Roman do make a bit appearance in Chapter 1). Mercury and Emerald appear in the same coinciding chapter as well. But Salem takes the cake, debuting in the final episode of Volume 3...and makes her appearance known at this finale.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: They're actively working alongside Eggman's forces, although time will tell if it'll last.

    Salem
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/salem_v7.png
"Sonic the Hedgehog has faced and defeated many powerful adversaries in the past...but he has never faced anything like me before."

An ancient and mysterious figure from Remnant who possesses the power to control the Grimm. It is unknown what her end goal is after Dr. Eggman's arrival.

  • Big Bad: Is this for Remnant, and would probably become one for Sonic and his friends as well.
  • Foil:
    • She's somewhat this to Eggman, given her abilities and involvement in the conflict in Remnant.
      • Eggman is known for his outgoing and somewhat bumbling personality, while Salem shows more stoicism and composure.
      • Eggman utilizes self-made robots and advanced technology to fight the heroes. Salem utilizes human and Faunus factions as well as the Grimm creatures, more or less biotic.
      • Salem is a being entrenched in Remnant's history, having existed since the world's very past, and is initiating a secret conflict using other factions. Eggman is an Outside-Context Problem that enters the world already posing a threat and while he is no stranger to manipulation, would often go out of his way to use his inventions with brute force. It's no wonder that the rest of the heroes are slightly shocked about his change of tactics.
    • She's also this to Ozpin in general with regard to the nature of their relationship and how they handle it alongside the Sonic characters. Salem pretty much allows Eggman to know pretty much everything about it, thus giving him an advantage towards their plans, while Ozpin keeps most of it in the dark, to the point that some of Team Sonic and Team Dark really don't put their best trust in him.
  • Humanoid Abomination: An immortal ruler of the Grimm with incredibly powerful magic at her command, and whose appearance includes Tainted Veins on top of a pure white skin and red eyes.
  • Obvious Villain, Secret Villain: A downplayed example in that the readers are immediately aware of her identity early on in the story. This is played straight in-story, as while Team Sonic, Dark, RWBY, and JNPR are all focused on handling Eggman, their allies Ozpin, Ironwood, and Goodwitch are aware of Salem and choose not to tell the Sonic heroes about the true nature of her existence, even when it's clear to them that both Eggman and Salem are in cahoots together. Though the story does provide an opportunity for the heroes to slowly clue in on her existence (Sonic proposes the idea of an Alpha Grimm that leads other Alpha Grimm; she is the one who controls them all).
  • Recurring Element: She's the villain from another world visited by another Big Bad in an Iron117Prime story. However, given the trajectory of the story, it's really harder to tell who's the real Crossover Villain-in-Chief, unlike the time it's established that the Shredder and Megatron were the primary ones from the get-go. It is yet unknown if she succumbs to the same fate as them (because she's immortal, though considering what happened with V.V., well...)

    Arthur Watts
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/watts_thumb_9.png

One of Salem's associates. A disgraced doctor and scientist from Atlas, he is skilled at hacking, coding, and cybernetics.

  • Always Someone Better: Before Eggman arrived at Remnant, Watts likely thought he was the most brilliant person in Salem's faction. After the good doctor's arrival, Watts finds his brains beaten by someone more pompous and intelligent than he is, much to Cinder's delight.

    Cinder Fall
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vale_cinder_2.png

An ambitious and enigmatic woman with power over fire, Cinder Fall is the leader of an equally mysterious group closely associated with crime lord Roman Torchwick. She is one of Salem's associates and works with Eggman in Vale. Cinder typically fights with a pair of swords called Midnight that combine into a compound bow created with Dust-infused clothing.

  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Cinder resents Eggman because he doesn't take or treat her with the respect she deserves despite having half of the Fall Maiden's powers, and the constant down-talking is starting to get to her. After he attacks her when she tries to blow Sonic and his allies up, she swears to make them both suffer.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: As Robotnik notes, Cinder only cares about gaining power for herself rather than any super dedication to Salem.
  • Recurring Element: Cinder is a villainess that's hard to beat in the original series but gets trounced by the newcomer heroes in an Iron117Prime fic, much like Azula (down to the flame powers) and Cornelia li Britannia. Unlike those two however, readers familiar with the source material clearly know that there's little to no goodness in her, as the above two later sided with the heroes later in their respective sagas and do possess redeeming values.
    • Interestingly enough, she's one of two of these archetypes (shared with Neo).
  • Sour Supporter: Despite her dedication to Salem, she's not too pleased that Robotnik threatens to countermand her with his own greater plans.
  • Suicidal Overconfidence: Cinder believes she can take on the speedy, blue hedgehog and his allies despite Eggman showing what he's capable of and saying that many have said the same before her. Cinder learns firsthand what they can do in Chapter 11 when she's nearly overwhelmed by Sonic, Tails (in the Cyclone), and Shadow despite having half of the Fall Maiden powers; she even had to blow up a warehouse just to escape them, and they still survived.
  • This Cannot Be!: Sonic, Tails, and Shadow survived Cinder blowing them up in Chapter 11, much to her shock.
  • Villainous Breakdown: In Chapter 30, after Tails reprograms Cinder's virus and tricks her and her team into a trap with Emerald, Mercury, and Neo incapacitated by Sonic's friends, she rants and blames Sonic for ruining everything. She yells that she deserves to have the rest of the Fall Maiden's powers because Salem selected her for the role. Sonic smacks her across the face and tells her to shut up.

    Hazel Rainart
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hazel_rainart_3.png
One of Salem's associates, and is someone who shares history with Ozpin.

    Tyrian Callows
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_ecff35ec85e56fdc60a55652574f2ac7_966a4a24_500.png
A scorpion Faunus and one of Salem's associates,

    Mercury Black
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mercury_black_6.png
One of Cinder's two subordinates, Mercury is a laid-back man who frequently engages in friendly bickering with his partner Emerald. He fights primarily with his modified greaves named Talaria and has absolute confidence in his combat ability.

    Emerald Sustrai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/emerald_v6.png

One of Cinder's two subordinates. Often feigning an amicable demeanor, Emerald is a snarky woman who also has a habit of sneakily robbing people when they least expect it. She's a premier stealth fighter, preferring opportunity attacks over straight-up confrontations.

Emerald fights with a pair of revolvers named Thief's Respite with retractable blades attached via chains. She can use her Semblance "Hallucination" to generate auditory and visual hallucinations; although influencing a single target is straightforward, she experiences increasing mental strain with each additional person she includes.

    Roman Torchwick
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/roman_v1.png

Vale's resident crime lord who works with the White Fang and spends months stealing the kingdom's Dust supplies when he encounters Ruby Rose and Sonic the Hedgehog at a Dust shop he's robbing.

Roman's weapon, Melodic Cudgel, appears to be an ordinary walking stick, but when activated it raises a crosshair and fires an unstable explosive round resembling a Roman candle. He hasn't unlocked his Semblance.

  • Big Bad Wannabe: Compared to Eggman, Salem, or Cinder, it's clear that Roman is a tadpole in a large pond of fish compared to them. No one except Neo respects or tolerates him, but Eggman and Cinder still need Roman for their plans for Vale. Roman is still dangerous, nonetheless, as he gave our heroes a decent fight in the Atlesian Paladin-290 prototype in Chapter 11.
  • Bullying the Dragon: Roman thought it was a good idea to get up in Metal Sonic's face and scold him about who's in charge of his operations. In response, Metal Sonic throws him over and almost rips his arm off.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: It's blatant that, aside from Neo, no one takes Roman seriously. Emerald and Mercury don't like him, Eggman and Metal Sonic see him as an idiot, and Cinder sees him as a pawn, but they still need him for their plans.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: While "friend" is pushing it, it's pretty clear that none of the other villains besides Neo like or even respect Roman. Emerald and Mercury despise him, Cinder sees him as an annoying but necessary pawn, and Eggman views him as little more than gutter trash who's a waste of Neo's talents.
  • Underestimating Badassery: He mockingly taunts Knuckles and his friends for not having Aura, thinking they would be easy targets. One failed shot later, Knuckles shuts him up afterward with a Pre-Asskicking One-Liner and a Megaton Punch.
  • Unwitting Pawn: While Robotnik might make grand promises, he secretly sees him as nothing but a lackey to do his work.

    Neopolitan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/neo_69.png

Born Trivia Vanille, Neopolitan is Roman Torchwick's partner-in-crime, often protecting and aiding both his and Cinder's criminal activities. Though Neo cannot speak, she's very expressive with her body language and Semblance.

She fights with a parasol named Hush that contains a retractable blade and a concealed rapier. Using her Semblance "Overactive Imagination", she can generate illusions that can shatter like glass when disrupted.

  • Berserk Button: Don't ask her about her mother or how she raised her.
  • Eyelid Pull Taunt: Neo does one of these to Metal Sonic when he walks away from her and Roman.
  • Flipping the Bird: When Rouge asks her to raise one finger if she stays silent by choice, and two if she's really mute or not, Neo answers by giving her the middle finger.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: Compared to her boss and ally, Roman, Neo is way more dangerous and skilled, with Eggman saying she's got potential. However, because she's still partners with Roman, Eggman, and Metal Sonic both think she's wasting her abilities working with that idiot.
  • Logical Weakness: Her 'Overactive Imagination' Semblance lets her create incredibly realistic illusions that can easily fool most opponents. However, the illusions themselves are just visual ones, so an opponent with sharp enough hearing can avoid being fooled, as she found out the hard way against Rouge.
  • Number Two: Neo is Roman's partner-in-crime and bodyguard, all rolled up in one.
  • Recurring Element: Is another example of the female high-ranking warrior (in relation to Roman) who's trounced very easily by newcomer heroes. She's on the receiving end of this from Rouge, whose abilities pretty much counter hers. Oddly enough, the fic is the first to feature two of these: the other being Cinder. While it is still unclear if she'll turn good or not like Azula or Cornelia, Rouge lampshades another factor of this character archetype before they fight.
Rouge: Don't suppose I can convince you to change sides and not waste your life on something stupid?
  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine: Is renowned for dancing around her opponents while taking no hits, and non-verbally taunting them throughout, making them enraged and sloppy. She finds herself on the receiving end of this in her fight against Rouge, whose hearing not only renders her Semblance useless, but her greater experience as both a spy and fighter lets her avoid all her attacks, something that quickly gets under Neo's skin.
  • Villainous Friendship: With her boss and partner-in-crime, Roman.
  • What Does She See in Him?: Eggman and Metal Sonic don't know why Neopolitan serves Roman even though she's the strongest of their little duo with the ability to overthrow him as Vale's crime boss.
  • The Worf Effect: Neo was a rather tricky fighter to go up against in canon, but the fanfic introduces characters who can directly combat her Semblance. Omega's robotic sensors won't fool him from her illusions, but it's with Rouge where we see it in full; her enhanced hearing (as she's a bat) allows her to notice which one is the illusion and which one isn't. In true Iron117Prime fashion, she's beat easily by the latter in the train fight.

    Doctor Merlot
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/merlot_smug.jpg

A scientist, believed deceased, who is working with mutating the Grimm.

  • Affably Evil: Is deliberately making the greatest threat on Remnant even deadlier and tries to kill the heroes, yet maintains a polite demeanor to them throughout and admits to sincerely respecting them. Despite styling himself a Well-Intentioned Extremist, he doesn't even display any dislike for humanity or the Faunus, viewing his culling as Nothing Personal.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Ozpin, Ironwood, and Pietro couldn’t help but pity his death.
  • Arc Villain: He's suspected to be dead by the start of the series, but it's later revealed that he's alive, well, and spearheading the Mutant Grimm project on his eponymous island.
  • Expy: He insists that he must work with the Grimm because they alone have the capacity to subjugate humanity's continuous conflict; not unlike Schneizel el Britannia's mindset behind siding with the Decepticons.
  • Graceful Loser: Is perfectly fine with the Beacon students and Teams Sonic and Dark defeating his mutant Grimm, noting that doing so just gives him more data to improve them with.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Has come to the conclusion that the Grimm are basically Remnant's "immune system", and that humanity and Faunus need to be contained and culled via his mutants in order to keep them from destroying Remnant. Tails even lampshades that his plan is not only immoral but completely logically flawed and doomed to failure.
  • Mad Scientist: The fact that he's making the Grimm more dangerous is all the qualification he needs to be considered one, let's just say that.
  • Not Me This Time: He denies having any involvement with the destruction of Mountain Glenn when Ozpin subtly accuses him, though the latter doesn't believe him.
  • Off with His Head!: Beheaded by Metal Sonic right as the protagonists escape the island.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: His mechanical body makes him fairly dangerous, but he's not a fighter, so he's more firing randomly than actually aiming.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Believes himself to be one, thinking that the Grimm are Remnant's "immune system", and that by mutating the Grimm he'll be able to keep humanity and Faunus in check.

White Fang

    Sienna Khan

The current High Leader of the White Fang after the original stepped down, turning the once peaceful organization began to adopt more and more radical methods. She leads the White Fang in Mistral.

  • The Ghost: Has been mentioned but has yet to appear.

    Adam Taurus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/adam_taurus_7.png

The leader of the White Fang's Vale White Fang branch, and Blake's former… "partner". Under his leadership, his branch of the White Fang became an extremist faction a violent terrorist organization that has earned much notoriety around the world.

  • Ambition Is Evil: When meeting Eggman in Chapter 15, Adam wishes to meet the Doctor's partner: Salem.
  • The Dreaded: Blake is terrified of him and goes to great lengths to warn Sonic about him.

    Fenrir Lokson
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lieutenant.png

A White Fang Lieutenant working with Roman and Eggman at Mt. Glenn.

  • Named by Adaptation: In canon, his name was just the "White Fang Lieutenant", and they never gave him an actual name; in this story, his name is Fenrir Lokson.
  • No Name Given: Lampshaded by Orbot when he asked if anyone managed to catch his actual name. In A New Threat, his name was revealed: Fenrir Lokson.

    Ilia Amitola
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ilia_amitola.png
A chameleon Faunus and old friend of Blake’s from the White Fang.

Other Antagonists

    "The Shapeshifter" (Spoilers!)

Mimic the Octopus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/idw_w&t002_mimic01.png
"Let this be an important lesson to you, kid: heroes become martyrs, professionals stay alive."
A former member of the Diamond Cutters mercenary group who winds up in Remnant alongside Doctor Eggman after he stowed away in the Space Colony Ark. He is later revealed to be working for Doctor Merlot, a subsidiary of Eggman's alliance with Salem.
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul: As of the fic's publication, with the exception of Tails (since he constructed the enclosure that kept him in place), none of the main Sonic heroes ever met Mimic in person before. Here, his debut reveals him in front of the main cast.
  • Always Someone Better: Neo is better at imitating people with her illusions, according to Torchwick anyway. For his part, Mimic is quick to dismiss her.
  • Arc Villain: Serves as the primary Sonic antagonist of the Grimm Eclipse arc.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: During his fight with Yang (actually a Bioid with his data) he quickly notices she doesn't bother dodging most of his attacks, and not only deduces her having a big attack stored up, but her own overreliance on it like Knuckles did.
  • Combat Pragmatist: His specialty, making sure whatever fight he gets into is stacked as much in his favour as possible and isn't afraid to bail when things go south. In his and the Bioids fights with the Beacon students, he uses his shapeshifting powers and verbal beatdowns to keep his opponents off balance and even grabs their own weapons to use against them, something that trips them up.
  • Imposter Forgot One Detail: Despite being a good shapeshifter, he along with his Bioids falls prey to this quite some times.
    • His "Ruby Rose" disguise is unable to replicate either her Aura or her Semblance, as well as her weapon. In addition, he's also far more serious, while Ruby is known for being a Genki Girl. He also doesn't know that much about how much she cares for her weapon, dismissing it when the real Ruby would've treated it like a pet.
    • His "Winter Schnee" disguise is undermined by the fact that Weiss knows better than to rely on her too much. Weiss also knows that if Winter had come, she would've told her that she would, which didn't happen.
  • I Want My Mommy!: Says this word for word when impersonating Ruby in captivity, solely to mess with the guards since they know it's him.
  • Kick the Dog: He's not afraid to use his shapeshifting to do this on his foes, but what he does to Weiss takes the cake. His Bioid turns into Jacques Schnee, correctly guessing there are Daddy Issues, and proceeds to unleash a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown on her while disarming her of her weapon and mocking her the whole time. It's traumatic enough that Weiss is reduced to tears breaks down in Sonic and Jaune's presence when they manage to show up and destroy the Bioid.
  • Shapeshifter Guilt Trip: As he's the one providing the image on the trope, it's not unusual to see him pull it off.
    • Once one of his Bioids gets to meet Yang, it transforms into Ruby as much as possible in order to make her hesitate, leaving her open to cheap shots, and tick the already pissed-off Yang on her emotional side. When the actual Ruby shows up, he does some quick taunting and misdirection to make a rip-roaringly pissed Yang seriously take a powerful swing right at her actual sister, a blow that could have seriously injured or even killed her if it had connected.
    • Blake is the one who nearly falls for this until the last minute when Amy interrupts because his Bioid uses the guise of a seemingly repented Adam to try and get her to lower her guard before trying in for the kill.
    • Right when Shadow attempts to beat him up, he transforms into Maria Robotnik at the last minute, causing him to hesitate. It only provides a brief respite for the shapeshifter due to how he triggers Shadow's Berserk Button.
    • After he's captured, it's mentioned that he does this to mess with the guards and his interrogators.
  • Team Killer: Killed off the Diamond Cutters mercenary group just like in canon.
  • Walking Spoiler: No reader would have expected his arrival on the scene, assuming that only Team Sonic, Dark, and Doctor Eggman were the only ones known to have made the jump to Remnant.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Lacks the superhuman level of physical prowess Sonic's friends have and the sole power he does have doesn't lend itself to combat. However he has years of experience as a mercenary and is quite skilled at using his shapeshifting to trip up opponents by imitating allies in the midst of battle. Doing so with backup lets him rapidly wear down powerful fighters like Ruby and Pyrrha, and came very close to killing them.

Other Characters

    Raven Branwen
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raven_branwen_profile.png
Click here to see her masked.

A former member of Team STRQ and Yang's birth mother, who left shortly after Yang was born.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: While she's normally seen in the earlier volumes as an eponymous raven, her human form debuts in Grand Tour, set before the events of Volume 3.
  • Adaptational Heroism: While how much she truly cares about her daughter's wellbeing is somewhat ambiguous given her Dirty Coward nature canonically, here Raven is far more obviously invested in Yang's wellbeing, approving of Knuckles' hard criticism of her Unskilled, but Strong nature and of Yang's desire to improve herself. She also tails the heroes to Dr. Merlot's island and takes action to help them directly by going for the doctor to make him shut down the facility and kill his mutant Grimm, all at rather considerable risk to herself even if she goes out her way to hide her identity. It also delves that some of her reasoning behind her falling out with Ozpin's "cult" and especially her brother Qrow lies in her belief that they're more interested in just holding a stalemate against Salem's machinations rather than willing to take risks and strive to improve themselves, rather than her having just lost any hope Salem can be beaten and wanting to try and stay out of the conflict.
  • You Remind Me of X: When she and Knuckles are battling the mutant Kraken, Knuckles notes how she seems familiar to someone. He finally makes the connection that she's Yang's mother when Qrow shows an old picture of Team STRQ.
