Ask the Tropers:
open Troper is weird about troping leaks Film
The Extractor added things relating to apparent leaks about Spider-Man: No Way Home to a few pages. I removed them, since my understanding is we don't trope leaks. They contacted me, somewhat rudely, citing some rule that "the forums" arrived at where leaks could be troped if confirmed by two specific sources, and presumptuously expected me to add the examples back to avoid an edit war.
I asked for a link to the discussion, and after replying twice to me, they still haven't bothered to link it. They did send me a snarky message with "you'll add the example back tomorrow ;)" (referring to a trailer release), however, after I linked a forum post replying to them, that they replied to that says not to use leaks, as well as the Content Leak page saying not to do it.
It was a weird way of conducting the entire thing, and I figured I should mention it.
Edited by FuzzyBarbarianopen Troper with a possible political agenda
Onlythrice has been editing this wiki rather frequently. Most of their edits seems to be valid, however more than once they have made concerning edits:
- They modified the entry on RoleEndingMisdemeanor.Live Action TV about Gina Carano's firing, to blaming it to "cancel culture", attempted to paint Carano as a victim of intelectual persecussion and to draw a false equivalence with her co-star Pedro Pascal's posts. The wording of the original post had already been approved through consensus on this ATT thread.
- They added an entry on for Real Life Un-person which originally read:
- However, a milder example occurred in early 2021 when after a group of protestors contesting the 2020 election looted the United States Capitol, President Trump's online presence was effectively erased by every mainstream social networking site for accusations of "inciting violence" in spite of his condemnation of their actions. This led to much controversy due to the precedent it was setting as well as the fact that several other figures who had incited violence, such as the Head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov who led anti-gay purges in Chechnya, were allowed to keep their accounts.
These edits seem problematic to say the least.
Edited by matruzopenPage ownership issues and rudeness Webcomic
PrincessPandaTrope and I are the only two people who frequently edit the page for the Sonic the Hedgehog fan comic Ghosts of the Future. I'm starting to understand why nobody else wants to edit the page. She keeps sending me PMs after I edit, saying that she's "very disappointed with" me for not phrasing things exactly the way she wanted.
One example would be my latest edit, where I removed the word "very" from a lot of edits, since it's a word that usually doesn't do any good. Saying "the house is very big" doesn't actually give you any more exact info about how big the house is than if you just say "The house is big."
She PMed me and said that I should have replaced it with a more descriptive adjective instead, without explaining why she couldn't do that herself.
She also said that I was giving the middle finger to the comic's creator, Evan Stanley, by replacing "very [adjective]" with a plain "[adjective]". She said that I was misleading people about the content of the comic this way—as if I had changed an exact measurement to one less exact or accurate.
And then there's the time when she asked people to cut down the wall of text in one entry, and then when I did that, she asked me to explain why I deleted things. I tried to be polite, but I wondered why she even asked for help if she expected people to follow rules she never bothered mentioning.
(Then, in an act of Edit Warring, she put back things I'd taken away.)
It feels like she's decided that my only task is to fix the grammar and spelling mistakes she keeps making again and again. It also feels like she's got this idea of how the page must be written that she assumes everybody else knows and she therefore chooses never to tell people about.
To be frank, she's acting like she's Knuckles the Echidna and the GotF page is a Chaos Emerald. ('Cause she's acting like its guardian, geddit?)
Short version: This troper is rude, keeps edit warring and has page ownership issues, and it's getting very tiring.
Edited by MichaelKatsuroopen Negative troper
Robert TYL has proven time and time again how prone they are to making aggressive comments and violating the "Don't be a dick" rule.
- For starters, here it's mentioned that they were rather snarky towards a troper making poor examples and auto-erotic troping.
- Here is a TLP comment that not only indicates they bombed an already sufficiently bombed draft, the comment was...well, a bit much.
- As mentioned here, several of their comments in cleanup threads are rather negative.
- Here, they were overly aggressive towards a new troper who had added a character page for a trope, to the point they were told by at least one other troper to tone it down.
- And finally, here they made an unnecessary and dark suicide joke that multiple people thought was going too far.
The kicker? In the "new troper made poorly-formatted character page" thread I linked, it was mentioned that is was the fifth time they had made such aggressive comments in ATT threads alone. The "discussing suicide" thread incident happened the following day.
openStrange new editor
Stella Meredith is a new troper, so this makes me feel a bit uneasy, but their edit history so far is...weird.
- On YMMV.Jack David Hopkins, they only changed some example text, but also randomly broke up an Anvillicious example so that part of it was under Unforunate Implications...unalphabetized, of course. Because of the changes made to the text, I haven't reverted this yet.
- On Characters.A Bugs Life, they changed an Everythings Better With Princesses example to The Woman Wearing The Queenly Mask (again without re-alphabetizing) and deleted a Hartman Hips example for no apparent reason.
- A lot of moments of them just rewriting and deleting bits of an example's text, such as on Dead Unicorn Trope, YMMV.Rugrats In Paris or YMMV.My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic. Not inherently bad, but combined with the other stuff it does make me a little wary.
- They straight up re-wrote the Hartman Hips description. Like, they didn't change the meaning, but what they did there is still a pretty significant change that could use a mod revert. ...Oh, same thing on All Girls Like Ponies- not as big a change, but still a good chunk of the page arbitrarily re-written.
- Deleted the Angry Birds example on Accidental Aesop and seriously cut down the Incredibles example.
That would be all their edits. I...yeah.
openVandalism and agenda-based editing
Cody Crogan just wiped both Tuca & Bertie and its YMMV page (I just manually reverted them both), and also randomly removed examples relating to LGBT fans on YMMV.Cyberpunk 2077. Their previous edits also appear to be unexplained removals that all pertain to criticizing bigotry.
Edited by mightymewtronopenProblematic Troper
I've been keeping some tabs on the recent edit history of Caesar44 and I've noticed their edits have a lot of problems, mostly relating to Conversation on the Main Page. This mostly amounts to adding notes to entries (particularly about American politics) and arguing about how it's not an example, as well as having improper grammar and capitalization.
- On Awesome.Atop The Fourth Wall, they added a note disputing Linkara's claim that all art is political, claiming he missed the point of people complaining about works being "too political".
- On YMMV.Civil War, there's a Never Live It Down entry about Reed saying his father should've supported McCarthyism. They proceeded to add a note claiming that McCarthy's accusations were mostly accurate (a fact that most historians claim is not true), so Reed was 100% justified in his claim.
- On YMMV.Alternate History Hub, a Some Anvils Need to Be Dropped entry talking about how bad it was for Trump to withdraw American troops from Syria had a note added when he complained that Cody had done videos arguing the Middle East would've been better without American interventionism.
I've sent them a notifier about Conversation on the Main Page for at least the Atop the Fourth Wall entry a while ago, but it seems like they didn't get the message. It seems they're editing with an agenda given the topics they're arguing against.
Edited by chasemaddiganopenPro-Russian Troper
After finding this edit, I decided to go through Qylymmasters's edits and noticed that they are negative toward Ukraine and Belarus. For example, an edit saying that "Ukraine can’t do anything without rivers of gold from the US".
open Complaints, deletions, and other nonsense (updated Oct. 4)
WDS has two big problems: a knack for complaining and a tendency to remove chunks of content without approval. I've just sent notifiers for the former, but the latter is what presses me to post about the issue now.
Complaining examples:
- Made the Super Soaker page, which consists of just five (no-context, badly formatted) items, three of which are complainy YMMV, one (Ruined Forever) being a Flame Bait item, and the other (Jumping the Shark) being In-Universe Examples Only. The description's also pretty complainy.
- On the subject of Ruined Forever, they keep adding Ruined Forever wicks to main pages despite that being against the rules. One example; more can be found elsewhere in this ATT as they're often lumped in with other complainy edits.
- They add a lot of complainy natter to pages, such as seemingly trying to force a Running Gag on Franchise Zombie (at the expense of actual example context) and this bit about the Matrix franchise (as well as more deleting chunks of text and adding what seems to be a justifying edit in its place) on Torch the Franchise and Run, which they later tweaked to refer to one specific Wachowski sister, referring to her simultaneously with her current name and deadname which isn't rule-breaking but just kind of inappropriate (though probably not intentionally offensive).
- This one isn't even a complainy item, but they just had to complain about "slappable titty walls" whatever the hell that means. Also it's basically a ZCE. And they posted the exact same entry on Alien Kudzu verbatim, which is a good example of why ZCE make for bad trope examples.
- More complaining, mixed in with deleting stuff only to replace it with complaining, with the oh-so-tasteful change from "[this game] was well received" to "[this game] looked like it was drawn by a retarded five-year-old."
As for the unnecessary deletions and other unilateral changes:
- They removed a lot of context from an entry about the Supreme Court on Word of Dante and replaced it with some complaining about the Supreme Court, even though the content they deleted did give more context for how judicial review came to be.
- More huge deleted chunks on Word of Dante. It'd be okay for them to make the entry more concise, but they don't really carry the material over and instead put up low-context entries instead.
- More deletions
- A lot of deletions!
- Deletions from RuinedForever.Live Action Films, which is concerning since that might just be them pushing their personal disagreement.
- Removing this section from the description(?) of Gender-Restricted Ability (granted, I don't love that text as it comes across as weirdly bioessentialist, but either way it should have been discussed).
- Changing the description on Sliding Scale of Continuity to be more narrow than it previously seemed to be.
- Big removals from the Catholic School Girls Rule description, removing the context for the trope and replacing it with something along the lines of "the origins are unclear, and nobody plays it straight anymore."
Other issues:
- More natter, not necessarily complainy but seems to be a Justifying Edit. Complete with a smiley face emoticon.
- This gushy edit on Testosterone Brigade which specifically points out that one of the actresses is underage while lusting about her wearing a bikini.
- Lots of ZCE, formatting, and natter/justifying edits in general (one more example of such), but that's not as egregious to me as the deletions and complaining.
openRude troper
Tropers/5u3902jgn-39 posted a rude reply on the Gremlins Headscratchers page. When I sent the standard notifier, I got a very rude reply.
They also post natter and break indentation rules.
EDIT: Here's a third example of rudeness, though less severe.
Edited by MichaelKatsuroopen WomenAreWiser wonk?
I noticed there's one user surname4u who's going around editing many Women Are Wiser examples, either deleting them or moving them into other entries, always citing misuse. But the tropes they move the example to seem a bit of a shoehorn to me, the majority being moved to Only Sane Man when that's clearly not the dynamic as it involves more than two people (Examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) or Straight Man which is a comedic routine (Examples: 1.
I couldn't find any recent Women Are Wiser discussion or clean up, but this focus on removing a female trope alarmed me. Is this something to worry about? Or am I just wrong and the moves they're doing are correct?
Edited by BlackMage43openFetish-fueled edits
Most of Violet Parrfan 1989's edits are fine, but there are some that are really strange. Several of them are about characters' body weights, even when this is not plot-relevant. In some cases, they carry fetishistic undertones, which is especially creepy when most of the characters in question are underage. Examples:
- Code Lyoko: Misusing They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot to complain that an episode is about characters starving instead of being force-fed until they are fat.
- Editing several examples in Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends to mention how a girl gets fat in one episode. Also, these examples on the YMMV page, which make blatant references to porn.
- Invader Zim: Added an example about a very young girl growing fat, in unnecessary detail. In the Trivia page, stated that this scene was "the episode's highlight".
- The Incredibles: Several edits in Violet's folder, many of which are about her body weight. See Hartman Hips, Weight Woe, Big Eater (which goes as far as to imply that this character has an eating disorder). Also, edits in the YMMV page to praise the character's "assets".
openBoomerang123 still causing problems
Back in April, Boomerang 123 was reported for shoehorning and complaining, and suspended. In August (months after being unsuspended), they edit warred over an example, complaining in the process, and tried to justify themselves by saying that "they were right" (even after being sent a notifier).
Fast forward two months, and there's still problematic edits from them. Among other things, there's:
- Complaining about shows they don't like
- A questionable edit where one of the traits they listed for a Jerkass entry was "ugly" (which I fail to see how being "ugly" is a Jerkass trait).
- Multiple dubious and seemingly shoehorned Hindsight entries.
- One particular Values Resonance entry which had to be removed on account of being a potential ROCEJ violation.
Edit history here.
Edited by Shadow8411openEditing bias, suspended multi-account concern
About three years ago, I made this query about a Troper named cheedo making edits to Game of Thrones pages that seemed pro-Sansa to the point of being anti-Dany / anti-Arya.
The edits of HelaenaHightower are similarly biased, imo. For example, they claim here that Sansa never lied regarding Lady attacking Joffrey, and Arya lied about how bad the bite was. This is the scene in question:
- She blinked at her sister, then at the young prince. "I don't know," she said tearfully, looking as though she wanted to bolt. "I don't remember. Everything happened so fast, I didn't see..."
So she did factually lie, but besides that there's their snippy "pay attention" comment in the edit reason.
Suspected bias aside, I'm wondering if Helaena Hightower is a secondary account for cheedo (who does not appear to have been edit banned, at least according to the thread). There's a slight overlap between the end of cheedo's editing history and the beginning of HH's, and they both edit pages for The Addams Family and The Munsters.
Edited by iamconstantineopenMisusing Troper
RileyGronlundSuperMario who was previously suspended for deliberate mis-information and improper trope use is back at it again.
- Misusing Adaptational Wimp for a Spongebob bubble of all things.
- They overlooked how X Must Not Win is to be used.
- They write negative comments towards characters they dislike.
- Lacking a link to the work they've written about.
- These Strawberry Shortcake entries are written with way too much exaggeration.
- Adding a film that didn't have a Downer Ending to that page just to use one of its scenes as an example with misuse of flanderization.
- A random youtuber isn't an example of Boss Subtitles just for adding them to games that doesn't use them.
openMarcoPolo250 Live Action TV
Marco Polo 250 trimmed down and cut multiple examples from ReBoot: The Guardian Code for apparently no reason.
The only edit reason they gave was "Spoilers", but the only spoilers they cut were from the original series, which don't even need to be hidden, let alone cut entirely. And not every change was spoiler-related anyway.
I PM'd them a couple of days ago but they have not responded.
openTroper fond of deleting YMMV with an agenda
When The Cleaner 69 decided to bump a resolved ATT in order to re-hash the same arguments that got the She-Hulk page locked, I dug into their editing history.
The majority of their edits are to YMMV pages, often deleting opinions in such a way as to promote an agenda:
- Deleting from YMMV Prey calling the example "weak" and "lazy".
- Deleting from YMMV-Stranger Things, specifically a sourced entry calling out the misogyny in the series.
- Deleting a Trans interpretation entry from Elden Ring
- Deleting an X-Men entry about misognyny.
- Deleting part of an entry on South Park that called out comedians using stereotypes.
- For a change adding on to an example in order to bash the 2016 Ghostbusters, accusing critics of "bias and hate".
- Three separate deletions in YMMV Fight Club in order to remove entries critical of alt-right groups.
openPossible issue with YMMV item at Roots (2016) Live Action TV
Okay, so usually I'm good leaving YMMV entries alone even if I disagree, but this seemed...a touch disturbing. The entry:
- Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Despite roughly half of the miniseries focusing on Kunta Kinte and his future generations portraying him almost as a messianic figure, a steadfast Mandinka warrior who never gave in, more often than not he comes across as little more than a spoiled Jerkass, even before his enslavement (picking fights in a dance circle, for example). His own father even calls him out for being irresponsible by saying he "won't be around forever to fix {Kunta Kinte's} mistakes". After his enslavement, his "sense of identity" isn't helped by his constant reference to Mandinka warriors; he was nearly kicked out of warrior training for insubordination and reckless endangerment, becoming one solely on an emergency-induced technicality. Even then, the last his parents saw of him was taking a horse his father gifted him and attempting to leave for Timbuktu without warning (and story-wise, without cause). What really makes him unsympathetic, even despite the new dark, bigoted, racist, and unforgiving setting of Virginia, is that not only does he never come to understand just how his rebellious actions hurt those who simply wanted to get by and survive (he could have at least ASKED Fiddler if he wanted to help in his second escape attempt, since aiding in a slave's escape was punishable by lynching, even if the offender was white), but he convinces otherwise passive and generally well-off slaves to become rebels, including his own daughter. The show tries to portray this as them rediscovering their roots and who they really are, but ultimately falls flat since not only does it end up getting them into trouble they otherwise would not get into, but neither case do they ever actually FIND their identity. Hell When Fiddler/Henry is killed in his Moment of Awesome, Kunta Kinte STILL calls him "Fiddler", despite already knowing his name is Henry. Well done, Toby.
Okay, I'm not sure I need to point out how...problematic this is, but it's essentially victim-blaming a slave in the American south for...fighting back? For trying to start a slave rebellion? And nevermind the really, really problematic language of "passive and well off slaves"
I kind of think this one needs to be stricken.
openTroper with natter and complaining issues
This troper seems to have a problem with natter and complaining. Their edits have a tendency to double (or even triple) the length of trope entries with information that is either tangentially related or even irrelevant, with quite a few cases of complaining. The example that really caught my eye was this one, due to it's length, and the sheer volume of unnecessary information. Here are a few more examples:
Edited by Shadow8411
TCS Slave Leia seems to be here just to bash works and people? They called a bunch of Phineas and Ferb fans "manchildren" (after making an entire review of their own just to shit on it and the show's fans). There's also this weird comment on a SML review.
There's more. Their troper page? Just a diatribe against P+F. They called fans of the show hypocrites in a trivia example. They generally seem obsessed with shitting on the show and its fanbase.
