Ask the Tropers:
openMutually exclusive tropes Film
The MCU: Spider-Man page features both Adaptational Early Appearance and Adaptational Late Appearance. I think that having two tropes with diametrically opposite meanings might confuse readers but troper Anicomicgeek disagrees. Instead of starting an Edit War, I thought of bringing the discussion here and show you what's happening.
- Adaptational Early Appearance: His relationship with Tony Stark. In the comics, Peter was more-or-less self-taught and figured things out his own way, but eventually gained Tony Stark as a mentor when he took a job at his company, but here, Tony begins mentoring Peter when he's still new to things. Notably, Tony gave Peter the job in the comics as a cover because Peter had moved in with the Avengers alongside his wife, Mary Jane Watson, and they needed to excuse why the Parkers were living there. This Peter is still too young to get married and is still living with Aunt May. While Tony Stark was actually introduced in the comics after Peter Parker, Stark can be seen as a stand-in for Reed Richards, who Parker originally looked up to.
- Adaptational Late Appearance: Despite the Adaptational Early Appearance with his relationship with Tony, Peter himself is this, as this Peter lived in a world where the Avengers existed for years before he became Spider-Man and idolized Iron Man. His comic counterpart actually predates Tony becoming Iron Man and by extension the founding of the Avengers themselves.
As you can see, both tropes inform about different points about Spider-Man's history, but I don't think it's a good idea to feature them both at the same time. What do you think?
openAvengers Endgame Headscratchers Locked Film
Not sure if this is the right place for this since it's kind of a moderator question but is there a reason why the Headscratchers page for Avengers Endgame is locked? I looked at most of it and the history and there didn't seem to be any significant arguments overtaking the page or excessive complaining that has gotten other Headscratchers pages locked. It seemed like a lot of standard discussion and questions. Is this just a temporary lock for some reason we can't see or is it permanent? I apologize if this is a mod only thing that I have no right to know the details of. I was just curious.
Edited by Ogiga99openHarsher in Hindsight misuse (?) Film
And here's HIH. Again. This time from YMMV.Cinema Wins (spoilers):
- Harsher in Hindsight: One clip from "Everything Great About Iron Man" has a picture of a young Tony Stark with who looks to be Microsoft Co-founder Bill Gates; this prompted a comparison bet. Stark and fellow Microsoft founder Paul Allen, specifically placing Stark as Allen's in-universe counterpart. After Avengers: Endgame, both Stark and Allen would be dead; the former after his Heroic Sacrifice; the latter after succumbing to non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in October 2018.
If it were a direct comparison between Iron Man 1 and Endgame, I'd leave it alone, but I don't believe a comparison between a Cinema Wins video about Iron Man 1 qualifies as HIH for Endgame.
Edited by RoundRobinopenCreator/TomHolland Real life troping Film
It looks like the page for Tom Holland suffers from real life troping which is apparently against Creator Page Guidelines. The page probably needs cleaning up.
I won't argue that he's Adorkable but that trope is also listed in No Real Life Examples, Please!.
I also wonder if Cannot Keep a Secret and Meme Acknowledgment can be kept as a Conversational Troping.
openPointless Negativity Film
Wercury made a Justifying Edit on Avengers: Endgame about Black Widow's sacrifice after I already removed one explaining my reasoning in the Discussion page. As well as a pointlessly nasty comment in the Explanation section claiming the only people bothered by it were cheap outrage peddlers and that anyone who agreed with them was an idiot for falling for their bullshit. As someone who was ultimately OK with the decision I can see why people had a problem with it too for lots of reasons that aren't outright sexist. It's a lose-lose situation regardless of who leapt.
openMovie released early Film
So Brightburn released early over here and I want to add the tropes but it didn't reach the worldwide date (May 24). Should I wait for the worldwide release or fill the tropes anyway?
openWasted plots and characters Film
So, I found these entries in the YMMV page for Wonder Woman (2017).
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
- In the backstory the Greek Gods (especially Diana's patron goddess Athena) are all dead save for Ares, who by his own admission destroyed them. A common complaint among Wonder Woman fans is that while she is an excellent character herself, her stories generally don't have the same density of Worldbuilding and Rogues Gallery that Batman and Superman have, and that DC rarely does heavy lifting in integrating the richness of Classical Mythology to its superhero lore the way Marvel does with Norse Mythology, and that arbitrarily wiping out the Pantheon, for the sake of simplifying Diana's origin, potentially limited the scope of her stories going forward.
- Some viewers were disappointed more wasn't done with Dr. Poison. For starters, she's a female scientist during World War 1, a period of time where someone such as herself would be looked out with confusion or disdain from her allies. One youtuber discussed this by pointing out how she acts as the perfect Foil to Diana: Diana had the ability to choose her destiny, while Dr. Poison essentially didn't, but the choice was made to make her a straight up villain in the end and not a Tragic Villain. Others think it may have been more interesting if she was Ares.
- The choice to kill off Ares. Not only is he Wonder Woman's most powerful and iconic villain, but he has so much backstory and potential that lends him to being one of the biggest villains in the DCU. He easily could have been a villain the Justice League could have had to face, and with how small Wonder Woman's Rogues Gallery is, he makes for a good long term villain. Instead he gets killed shortly after appearing, which calls into question now what they can do with Wonder Woman since her first solo-film has her beating a literal God of War.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Quite a few people considered it a wasted opportunity that the movie did not stick to the idea that Ares was not behind the war and that the people fighting in it were fighting purely because they wanted to, particularly since it would have provided a great reason for Diana to seclude herself from humanity. This is especially strange given that up until that point in the movie, Diana's entire character arc was about learning how humans are both capable of evil and good, but the choice for Ares to appear throws all of it under the bus. Its such a sore spot for people that many feel it damages the films quality.
Do they really qualify for these tropes or not? I'm asking because sometimes, the inclusion of these tropes in YMMV pages are less "This plot/character wasn't properly developed or explored" and more "I didn't like the way this plot/character was handled."
openHilarious In Hindsight on the Megamind page, misuse or not? Film
I've noticed that keyblade333 recently deleted the entirety of the Hilarious in Hindsight entry from the Megamind page.
After I talked to them about it, they claimed that it was because of misuse.
I think they're a mixed bag. Things like Jonah Hill's and Will Ferrell's roles in The Lego Movie count, given that Jonah Hill was voicing a character who was heavily inspired by Jimmy Olsen, with the names of two Green Lanterns, only to later voice Green Lantern himself who has an obsession with Superman. Same thing with both Will Ferrell characters having a tendency to mispronounce things and also being parodies of over-the-top supervillains.
Some of the entries really were borderline examples, but that's no reason to delete the entire entry.
Edited by tropineasilyopenPhoto in the examples section Film
True Lies has a photo right next to the Truth in Television example. Is this kosher? I thought photos were only supposed to go up at the top, or is that an unofficial rule?
openPotential trope misuse in Harry Potter Film
I'd like to bring up a potential misuse of Adaptational Badass in Harry Potter's character page:
- In the first book, Harry is barely able to hold off Quirrell, with the effort nearly proving fatal. In the film, Harry kills Quirrell with relative ease, and is still on his feet before being downed by Voldemort's soul when he escapes.
- t When confronted by Snape in the Shrieking Shack in the third film, Harry sends him flying into the wall with an Expelliarmus from Hermione's wand, which is supposed to be more difficult with a wand that hasn't chosen him. In the books, this same effect was achieved by him, Ron and Hermione trying to disarm Snape simultaneously.
This is the exact same thing that happened here. So, what do you think?
openIs there a place where I can request a specific kind of fanfic? Film
I want recommendations of a star wars fanfic, but I'm looking a specific kind of fic. I want it to be a Star Wars Sequel Trilogy fix fic that keeps TFA and TLJ as canon, but not T Ro S. Essentially, I'm one of those people that really liked the first two, and especially all the Rey-Kylo Ren-Luke parts of TLJ, but hate the third one completely.
I want an episode 9 that builds off what TLJ set up and concludes the trilogy in a satisfying way, but most fix fics I see tend to either redo the entire trilogy or accept TFA but not TLJ. I don't want Rose Tico written out, I want Finn to have an arc, and I want Rey and Kylo Ren to have a resolution that isn't a copy of Luke and Vader and I don't think anyone in the world likes Rey being a Palpatine.
So there is a "request good fanfic page"? There is a fanfic recommendations page, but is there anywhere I can ask others if they found a fanfic that does the stuff I mention?
openTrope for returning Director/Composer/Developer? Film
Apparently, the tropes Role Reprisal or The Original Darrin is for returning actors only? Is there a trope for when the original director/Composer/Developer etc returns for a film/tv show/game that they worked on after several years?
Edited by LordAraghastopen Movie/TV Show Explaining Theory of Historical Procreation Film
This is a random one. I remember part of a film or TV show where the narrator was discussing how procreation works on the psychological level (I believe specifically speaking about humans). They talk about how when the environment/conditions are poor (i.e., war, death, famine), that the species is more likely to procreate more to bulk up the numbers to survive as a species. In times of peace, they feel less of a need to do so.
openA Cinderella Story Film
I added Moral Event Horizon to Shelby from A Cinderella Story because I thought that torturing a innocent teen into tears like that is beyond any sense of forgiveness. The fact that Shelby continues to harass her as she's in tears in the hallway just sinks it further. And the indication that she's torturing Sam for being an abuse victim really brings it down as well. Do you think I’m exaggerating that it's a Moral Event Horizon? If not, how come?
Edited by NoobMasteropenWhen pages should be spoilered Film
I'm currently (well, have been, given the latest server crash) working on a page for the film The Death of Dick Long. That movie, without going into too much detail, revolves HEAVILY around a twist in the last half or so. My question is whether I should spoiler the tags on this page, or keep it all unmarked, because the twist in this movie is enough to make a great portion of its tropes nothing but white rectangles if spoilered. That, and The Cabin in the Woods is a similar type of film and it has its spoilers marked, but also has tons of white rectangles in its tropes.
openShould this have been deleted? Film
I was looking at the history for Smokey and the Bandit and I found this had been deleted:
- How long was Charlotte crated up and left in a dark warehouse in Florida? And pregnant, no less. The guard didn't seem to know what was in crate 1444, did she get food and water?
The reason for deletion was "Deleted a fridge horror entry that had nothing to do with the film", but this does look like it has something to do with the film (well, the sequel, but the work page covers the entire trilogy). Would it be okay to readd it?
openFolders (and moments) Film
Howdy. It’s me again. So far, I’m getting used to TV Tropes and its mechanics. What’s really bugging right now is how to get the folders up for characters. Plus, there’s no sign of any pages that direct to Awesome, Funny, Heartwarming, Nightmare Fuel or Tearjerker whatsoever. I thought it would be the more experienced thing for older Tropers. How can we make this work?
Edited by 8454178970openWham Shot misused? Film
So I was looking at Wham Show Film page and I was thinking if I should remove some examples for what I think is misused. Here's some examples that I think it's misused:
- In the trailer of The Jungle Book (2016), the first half is narrated by Scarlett Johansson, leaving many viewers confused, until...
ScarJo: Let go of your fear now...
- The trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) shows a brief scene depicting Burning Godzilla.
- The 1968 cowboy western Shalako opens a scene with a bunch of cowboys loudly and raucously whooping and making noises at a cougar to scare and drive it off, then cuts to, of all people, Brigitte Bardot!! dressed in fancy, European hunting clothes and a silk top-hat and wielding a rifle, which she fires and kills the cougar.
- Jesus Christ, it's Henry Fonda!
The Way back machine won't let me go a little further to the old WMG page of Star wars 9.
