Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Is anyone keeping up with the Pathfinder adventure paths? The Whispering King is the main antagonist of the new arc and given that he's implementing his grand plan to become a god a la Nicol Bolas in War of the Spark I think that there are plenty of updates to be made.

yes to the above there as well.

Also, just to check in...I finished Knightfall Season 2 recently, and I think King Philip is a near, near miss. As awful as he gets (and it's awful), there are members of his family he loved in the past, and his daughter, and his care for them is never explicitly discarded as it was with his wife or how he treats his son. Philip is awful in every respect, and ends up deserving his final fate, but he narrowly misses this trope.

Out of curiosity, how bad DOES he get, and what IS his final fate.

Seems kinda like 2012!Thanos: No longer a WIE, but never explicitly discards his love for Gamora.

He murders his pregnant wife, Joan, goes ham on the Templar Order, with mass torture, executions, burning people alive, tries to have his wife's baby bastard child murdered by her own half brother, has a bunch of people killed, throws his daughter-in-law in a tower to rot for adultery (she's been framed, but he's a bit prickly about adultery by that point), and general dickery....oh, and he has the pope murdered to bring in his own puppet.

By the end, his chancellor and son have had enough of him and leave him to his former best friend/arch-enemy, Landry who kills him in a sword fight after informing him god has forsaken him.

For a 616 candidate. Robert Callahan from Uncanny X-Men. ?

A general ripper seems unique even for x men.

Hes pretty new and only in 9 issues but rather nasty from the reviews I saw.

I took a stab at a couple of rewrites from the Transformers page. Here are the originals:

  • Overlord, debuting as the Big Bad in Last Stand of the Wreckers, is without a doubt the most depraved Decepticon to ever grace Megatron's ranks. Though always a terrifying force of savagery, known and feared by friend and foe alike due to his psychotic brutality on the battlefield where he regularly slaughters dozens of enemies with his bare hands, Overlord's truly wicked nature comes out in full when he is sent to Garrus-9 to oversee the rescue of Decepticon prisoners. Deciding instead to take over the entire planet, Overlord executes the current Decepticon general, alongside any of his supporters, before turning the planet into a hellish concentration camp occupied by hundreds of Autobot prisoners. Overlord takes sick pleasure in the various atrocities he perpetrates against his defenseless prisoners, from dismemberment, to public executions, to "releasing" them, then chasing them across the planet in "hunts", all of which he subjects his own troops to should they annoy him. Having a pathological fear of defeat, Overlord's entire motive stems from always losing to Megatron in sparring matches, and to ensure he can't "lose" to the Wreckers when they come to rescue his prisoners, Overlord has all 50 of the surviving prisoners executed. Returning later in the More Than Meets the Eye story arc, Overlord escapes confinement and shreds his way through dozens of Autobots before Rewind sacrifices himself to take down Overlord, though not before Overlord rips all of his limbs off then bites his head in two, all of which he later taunts Rewind's spouse with. In his final appearance, Overlord once again oversees a horrifying war campaign against the Autobots, culminating in him ditching his allies to their fates when he grows bored of the proceedings. Overlord is an abomination of a Decepticon who horrifies and disgusts everyone he meets, his own teammates included, something he laughs about every chance he gets.

  • Pharma is a former Autobot Medic who went evil. After saving one of the main character's lives, he became the head medic at a medical facility on the planet Delphi. There he received death threats from an elite Decepticon unit who threatened to overrun the place, and began bribing them with organs, first from dead bots but later he began killing living ones. Eventually it becomes too much, and he has two other Decepticons unleash a plague on the facility to kill everyone and cover up his crimes. When he's revealed, he shoots a life-support, sending about 20 patients into near death states to distract everyone. He then tries to kill Ratchet twice before being thrown off the facility. He survives the fall and is recruited into the group of Chief Justice Tyrest, who drilled a hole in his head and is trying to destroy all Transformers he considers inferior; all the Decepticons admit to being freaked out by him. When he finds Ratchet again, he separates Ratchet's head and spark from his body and starts torturing him. To prove he is a better medic, he has one of his co-workers from Delphi, Ambulon, sliced in half, vertically from head to crotch, with a chainsaw, and tells Ratchet to fix him. Ambulon dies in agony before the chainsaw leaves him. Later Pharma shoots Brainstorm.

And my rewrites:

  • Overlord is a psychopathic Decepticon Super-Soldier, feared by friend and foe alike for his brutality and sadism. Driven by a hatred for Megatron, who always defeated Overlord in sparring matches, Overlord eventually deserts from the Decepticons, hoping that Megatron will hunt him down. Seizing control of Garrus-9, Overlord turns the planet into a hellish concentration camp, committing various atrocities against his helpless prisoners, showing the same cruelty to his own troops should they displease him. When the Wreckers come to Garrus-9 to liberate the prison, Overlord has all surviving prisoners executed to cheat the Wreckers of their victory before being subdued. Imprisoned aboard the Lost Light, Overlord escapes confinement and tears his way through the crew, with his rampage only being stopped when Rewind ejects himself and Overlord from the ship, for which Overlord dismembers Rewind and bites his head in two, later taunting Rewind's spouse Chromedome with the gory details. Later taking on a mission to assassinate Megatron, Overlord joins the Decepticon Justice Division in a campaign against the Lost Light crew, abandoning his allies to their fates when he grows bored with the proceedings. In his final appearance in Requiem of the Wreckers, Overlord aligns himself with the mad scientist Tarantulas, posing as a human politician to stir up anti-Cybertronian sentiment as part of a social experiment. Overlord goes on to murder Tarantulas and hijack his Timemaze project, planning to use it to kill Megatron over and over again throughout history. A depraved abomination of a Decepticon, Overlord is a sadist without equal that horrifies everyone who knows of him.

  • Pharma started out as a renowned Autobot medic who became head of a medical facility on the planet Delphi. Receiving death threats from the dreaded Decepticon Justice Division, Pharma began bribing them with organs from dead patients to ward them off, but moved on to killing living patients when the DJD's demand increased. Descending into madness, Pharma had two Decepticon prisoners unleash a plague on the facility to kill everyone and cover up his crimes. When exposed, Pharma shoots a life-support machine, endangering 20 patients, to distract from his escape, as well as trying to kill his old friend Ratchet. Later recruited by the unhinged Chief Justice Tyrest, Pharma aids in his scheme to destroy all constructed cold Transformers. Meeting Ratchet again, Pharma dismantles his body, reducing Ratchet to a head and spark chamber, and tortures him. When Ratchet challenges Pharma to prove which of them is the better medic, Pharma gruesomely cuts Ambulon in half from head to crotch, killing him and daring Ratchet to fix him, later laughing about this crime when confronted about it. A cowardly sadist at heart, Pharma proves himself willing to sink to any depths to save his own skin or to hurt his enemies.

Also, I proposed a couple of quotes a while back that didn't get a lot of feedback and didn't end up on the quotes page, so here they are again:

August Walker: Is it true [Solomon] Lane gassed a village of 2000 people?
Ethan Hunt: Yes.
Walker: Is it true he brought down an entire passenger plane just to kill one man?
Ethan: Yes.
Walker: Is it true that he—
Ethan: Hey, Walker, whatever you heard, if it makes your skin crawl, it's probably true.

"I prayed that he would burn in hell, but in my heart, I knew that hell would not have him."

Yes to everyone I missed.

I do not have a 616 candidate, but I may have a Pre Crisis DC candidate and not someone obvious like the Joker:

What is the work?

So back in the early 70s, DC comics decided to go from somewhat silly escapist stories mainly aimed at kids to stuff that was more socially relevant and dealt with important issues at the time.

So Denny O'Neil took over the Green Lantern book, paired him with Green Arrow and they would go across America to see why it has so many problems after Green Arrow chewed him out for taking a slum lord's side over his abused tenants, just because he had the law on his side.

So this is the famous comic book run that took Green Arrow from a Batman knock off to the left-wing defender of the poor, established Hal starting to question the Guardians decisions and had Speedy getting hooked on heroin. Anyway going across America in the early 70s the green heroes find greed, corruption, racism, cults and all sorts of other unpleasant stuff.

Who is Joshua? What has he done?

Joshua is a cult leader, with mind control powers. He is also a pretty clear Charles Mason inspired character.

When Black Carnary is attacked by some bikers and run over by them, Joshua finds her by the side of the road, taking her back to his compound he gives her medical treatment to heal her and then mind controls her to be his minion. He has also mind-controlled several other people, forcing them to join his cult and work on his compound. Green Arrow and Green Lantern find Black Carnary on the compound and try to convince her to leave, but she refuses and Joshua says they will accept his message and demands they leave (not sure why he did not try to mind control Green Arrow and Green Lantern, oh well).

Anyway, Joshua is a white supremacist and thinks that the white race cannot live peacefully with other races and plans to kill all nonwhites within the US. He plans to start by having his cult attack a native reservation, wanting them to kill everyone there.

Green Arrow and Green Lantern defeat the cult before they can attack the reservation. Joshua takes Black Carnary with him, planning to flee and start over somewhere else, but before they leave, he orders Black Carnary to kill Green Arrow, but she cannot do it. Joshua calls her a weakling and plans to do it himself, but Green Lantern attacks Joshua with his ring, throwing him off balance and Joshua accidentally kills himself with his gun.

Is he heinous by the standards of the work?

So this is Pre Crisis DC, so the standard is lower and it is easier for someone like Joshua to stand out, some of the keepers we have from the Pre crisis-era are more high level.

Of the villains featured in this run, Joshua is one of the worst. The sleazy landlord is not heinous enough, there are some other sleazy businessmen who do not count, there was a WIE on a planet causing an overpopulation problem (like reverse Thanos), there was a guy

The only other guy from this run who count is a Corrupt Hick who runs a town and has miners work for him in terrible conditions, intentionally causes them to revolt, so he can kill a third of them, in order to cow the others into total obedience (he also has literal Nazis working for him), but I am not sure he is heinous enough.

I feel like leading a racist death cult would stand out in Pre Crisis DC.

Any Freudian Excuse or other redeeming qualities?

I do not think so.

I do not know why he nursed Black Carnary back to health, maybe he was attracted to her, maybe he thought she was a useful minion, but he calls her a weakling at the end of the story and made her his mind-controlled pawn, there is no indication he cares about her or any other cult members.

Also, I think his racism is pretty vile, he says the white race needs to destroy the other races to survive and says its a pity they have to do this, but he is clearly just motivated by racial hate and the line about it being a pity they have to do this, means nothing when he has a hateful sneer on his face while delivering it.

Final Verdict?

Keep Josh.

Does anyone think the Corrupt Hick is worth proposing?
