As a universal rule this seems silly. Like, what about references to works from Small Reference Pools? Is a caption on a superhero work referencing Superman too much to ask for? Why are famous song lyrics, biblical passages, and Shakespeare quotes that appear in everyday language less preferable as captions than whatever garbage we can come up with?

A lot of pinball pages have captions that fall afoul of this policy, so I began cleaning them very recently (either changing them to a tagline or removing them entirely if none were available). There's a couple edge cases that I wanted to ask about:
- Mayfair isn't officially based on the movie My Fair Lady but uses characters and imagery very clearly inspired by it. The caption ("I'm a good pin, I am!") appropriates a line from the film appropriately. Should I remove it?
- The Phantom of the Opera is a similar case - it's based on the original novel but was released after the Broadway adaptation had established itself as a success. The caption notes this: "Not based on the hit Broadway musical." I don't know if it's redundant to the work's description (which also explains this near the start).

, we decided to no longer allow captions on work pages or subpages that reference works outside the franchise the work belongs to. instead of just summarily cutting the captions, leaving the images blank, i wanted to start this thread to give people a chance to suggest replacement captions.
