On TV Tropes, Too Soon is specifically about works being censored, delayed, or canceled because of similarities to something that happened between its conception and (planned) release.

However, outside of TV Tropes, "Too Soon!" has a much broader meaning, and is usually a Stock Phrase used when someone is offended by a joke about a recent tragedy. Instances of this happening in media would fall under Dude, Not Funny!.

Because of the difference between the more common definition of "Too Soon" and our definition, the trivia page Too Soon is often linked to for In-Universe examples that fit the "Dude, Not Funny!" definition. Not helping is the page quote, which points towards the Dude, Not Funny! definition.

    Wick Check
NOTE: Since the misuse is mostly in In-Universe examples, I have excluded the Trivia namespace from the pages being checked.

The wick check gave 27 cases of misuse and 17 correct uses, so the name is definitely causing problems.

My suggestion is to rename Too Soon to something else (the best I can come up with is "Distanced from Current Events"), and then turn Too Soon into a disambiguation page between that and Dude, Not Funny!.

Something like "Current Events Change" could work, but some of the examples were simply pulled off the air/removed from the internet/etc instead of changed. Otherwise, I agree with the name change, it would probably get rid of any confusion regarding when Too Soon should be used.

[up]That should be Affected By Current Events, but I do like that better than Current Events Change, since "current events change" sounds like it has to do with either historical revisionism of recent events or news broadcasts issuing corrections.

Affected By Current Events is definitely a *way* better name than Current Events Change and Too Soon. I support that namechange.

So the vote is to clean up 1,400 pages? Just asking because if not, a disambig page called Too Soon would result in lots of wicks from trivia pages.

Personally, I think a split would probably be the best solution.

[up]Do you mean disambig? The common meaning of the phrase "too soon" is already covered by Dude, Not Funny!, which is already In-Universe Examples Only (the OP mentioned misuse involving in-universe examples).

I'm assuming disambiguating would involve moving the definition of Too Soon to a new location, and turning Main.Too Soon into a disambiguation page between Dude, Not Funny! and the new name for what is currently located at Too Soon.

I agree that it should be renamed Affected By Current Events, as it gives a clear idea of what it's about.

Other misuses from the main page that I could think of that were in-universe include the examples for Phineas and Ferb and The Sponge Bob Movie Sponge Out Of Water.

The only issue I have with that name is that it doesn't imply a desire to avoid poor taste. Works delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic would be affected by current events, but most aren't being held off due to their subject matter.

[up][up] That's why in the first post, I suggested "Distanced From Current Events" as a new title, instead of "Affected by", and haven't seen anyone critique it.

"Affected" implies that the work was directly impacted by the event itself, which is outside of the page's scope. "Distanced" explains why the work is being changed.

Now that I've thought more about it, Distanced from Current Events probably would be better than Affected By Current Events.

Hooked. We would have preferred the Alternative Titles category, but we'll roll with it.

I believe I Knew It! suffers from a similar issue to Too Soon: a Trivia item named for a phrase which has a broader meaning outside this wiki which means something specific on this site (in [1]'s case, a fan theory or fan speculation being proven true). However, I've seen In-Universe examples of I Knew It! using the broader meaning, a phrase someone says after finding out they were correct on something, and examples of someone literally saying the phrase "I knew it" for any reason. And it has also been linked to whenever the words would come up, which is one reason No New Stock Phrases is a rule. There was once a video example on the page that has since been removed that reflects the misuse of I Knew It!.

Three-day bump. The consensus is to rename Too Soon to distanced from current events.

I also looked at Quotes.Too Soon, and most of them only fit the misuse: people negatively reacting to a joke made about a tragedy. The only one that is actually about a work being altered, delayed, or canceled due to a then-recent tragedy is the Comedy Central one, but it's lengthy and looks to be complaining about the jokes being removed. I think that subpage should be cut.

I already cutlisted the quotes page. I'm not even sure if the Comedy Central quote counts, since the people doing the censoring were not the people behind the jokes, and the reason they censored the jokes was because they were offended, so it's just out-of-universe Dude, Not Funny!.

I say we make a spin-off page about media affected by current events. Maybe we can keep the original page for in universe instances when someone makes an offensive joke about something too soon.

Nah, a disambiguation is better. I've done that.

These subpages need to be checked before they can be moved, I think: TooSoon.September Eleventh and TooSoon.Live Action TV
