Making disambigs for works that share names...

Go To

As seen in the Do we have a project to disambig works? Ask The Tropers, there are many works pages that seem to need disambigs, by virtue of sharing names and having no differentiation.

This thread is for the discussion and listing of what to do about such pages.

See here for a list of needed disambigs.

I might of found another couple of examples while working on The List:

Love and Honor is less of an issue if the other film doesn't have a page yet, but we might want to fix it if that changes (or is about to change).

Westworld probably needs a suffix adding to both, to help with the subpages, unless there's already been a decision not to.

Gladiator looks like it's somewhere in the middle. As one page has a suffix, there won't be a subpage clash. But the later film wouldn't normally have any claim on the 'no suffix' name - and as they're both films, I'd expect Film.Gladiator to be a simple disambiguation page listing and linking both. Again, not sure if that's already been discussed somewhere.

Any other views on this?

For Gladiator, after some searching, I was only able to find this discussion. I just recently added the 1992 film to Gladiator — for a film that is 31 y.o., I'm surmising that not a lot of people have seen it.

Not sure what to say about the other examples, just that it is the weekend... I did, however, find Cargo (2009), Earth (2007) and Home (2009) that lack a page and lacked a mention on disambiguation pages.

I hope this is the right place to ask. I'm so confused about what the policy is here.

"Children of Time" is a title that refers to both a novel by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and a Sherlock Holmes/Doctor Who crossover fic. Children of Time thus links to the former, and Children of Time the latter.

The problem is that for example, Children of Time explicitly only covers the fanfic, and not the novel. This is very confusing when you view the page links at the top of Children of Time: They imply the existence of many pages relating to the novel, when in fact almost none of them do (I think Laconic is the only one that covers the novel in addition to the fic).

I know the policy is to do soft splits. The policy seems very stupid to me in a case like this. Yes, the novel and the fanfic are disambiguated by the fact that they live in separate namespaces; but pages like Characters or Trivia are not, and so the soft split approach is (in theory) used. Why? Why should I visit Children of Time and have to wade through a bunch of stuff about a work I'm completely uninterested in to get to the stuff about the work I am interested in?

It seems like disambiguation is only mentioned in policies when it covers works with the same name in the same namespace. But I'll grant that the policies are hard to follow (and hard to find in the first place).

Am I wrong? Can I do a hard split to keep these two entirely unrelated works separate?

yeah, if you want to make a Characters page, then splitting them is very warranted.

Policy is not for soft splits. We want hard splits.

Use Page History Move Request to ask for moves.

But might be easier to move the novel to cover the series of the Literature instead of the fanfic, because then you only have to move the Laconic too.

Was cleaning https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/relatedsearch.php?term=Series/StarTrek

Fanfic.Christine Morgans Gargoyles - Not sure what to do with this nameless saga. Can move manually. Everything's by Rose Unity, who's still active but seems to have dropped the page so I'm not pinging them.

Should we just move it to "Gargoyles Christine Morgan" like I planned? Or give it some other name? Or cut it all together since it wasn't crosswicked??

Looks like there's a custom title collision on Blood And Chocolate between Literature.Blood And Chocolate (Blood and Chocolate) and Music.Blood And Chocolate (Blood & Chocolate).

Not sure about (album) as a disambig suffix - we could use (Elvis Costello) or (1986)?

Album's a usual suffix? Explains what kind of Music it is, unlike Literature which is majority print novels?

If it's a standard option within the Music namespace, that's not an issue. Ignore me grin

Hi, I would like to move The Swarm to The Swarm (2023), as currently the page has only three tropes, it's only linked to one other page, and all of its subpages are shared with The Swarm. Do we need to vote on this?

No, I don't think you need permission, I just use this thread if I'm confused about what to rename to.

And anyone who disagrees could ask for a revert in the future or whatever, then the decision would be backed by authority or whatever.

I've also noticed the issue with the Blood & Chocolate namespace that was recently brought up here. Unless someone else was planning on doing so, is it okay to just go ahead with making pages for the book and album with new namespaces?

I was intending to go by year as other tropers already suggested, as that makes the most sense to me and the movie adaptation of the book is already disambiguated by year.

And noting that Film. The Swarm exists, which has to be moved, probably by tool, now that Series. The Swarm 2023 exists.

But I already have a lot queued up, so I'm not gonna do that, until a while later.

So, I just made Literature. The Storm because WebOriginal. The Storm got cut, so I figured I'd remake it since it's a 4-minute creepypasta.

Only to realise that some wicks may not be from the same story. Namely these:

And these two that I can't pinpoint what it's even pointing to.

I'm not sure what to do here, so I'd really appreciate the help please.

Those first two were redlinked per policy, and so they all go to the same target page unbeknownst to the editors.

  • The 2021 creepypasta is definitely not the 80-year-old story from Isaac Asimov Presents.
  • The Cussler book refers to this novel.

I'm thinking the creepypasta should be disambiguated to account for the other wicks and a disambig page made for The Storm. I see there are films and other media with the same title, so in the future, The Storm might become a disambig. This presents an interesting problem with redlinking, but for now, just disambiging your page seems like the best, easiest option.

Well, there's the Art being the page image of A Storm Is Coming that's translated named The Storm...

With such a common title, I'd disambig the creepypasta by author. I suppose "(Creepypasta)" might also work, but author would probably be more futureproof.

So just to clarify, is the following what I should do?:

I am not sure what to do with the one listed in Troper Works though. Can it be verified or should it be removed for now?

That seems fine. I personally wouldn't go with year for the 2012 novel (like I said, common titlenote ), but since it's a redlink, that can always be revisited later easily.

Checking the mod history of WebOriginal. The Storm (which is what the Troper Works link originally pointed to), that's a different work: The Storm / When the Storm Came

[up]Ooh I see. If I were to remake the page for that, would it be at When the Storm Came or The Storm (author) note ? I personally lean towards the former. In that case, would it not be in the Literature. The Storm disambig?
