I just watched a Let's Play of the first chapter just so I could have a more valid opinion on this matter. Yes, I am quite impressed with it so far.

Loved Samus Returns, hated Zero Mission (don’t kill me please), and I’m neutral on most others by virtue of having never seen the original. It really depends how well the remake is done - I hold them to the same standards I hold original works.

I don't normally see them as necessary, but remaking a game that has not aged well can be a good thing. Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen is the first such example that comes to mind.
