The Copy-Paste Cleanup Thread

Go To

Apparently some people find it easier to copy-paste text from other sources, including Wikipedia or the creator's original site, instead of coming up with their own text.

However, this could get the website in a ton of legal trouble for plagiarism and/or copyright violations. (Not to mention it's lazy writing to boot.) Since stopping that problem is a very high priority, and I've observed multiple cases of this problem as of late, let's give this its own dedicated clean-up thread. If you see any work, character, or recap descriptions that copy another source word-for-word, bring them up here if you're not sure how to immediately fix them.

Moderator notice: If you cannot immediately rewrite plagiarized text, remove it and put in a placeholder note. A sample follows:

[This description was copied in violation of our [[Administrivia/AboutImagesAndCopyright Plagiarism]] policy. Please replace it with original writing.]

Below is a list of currently known pages that suffer from this problem, and the source they copy from. (This list can be updated by mods or by me, Totemic Hero.) The ideal goal is to have these pages fixed within a week or two of finding out about the copy-paste. If we can't manage to come up with a fix in that time frame, then we'll probably have to outright Cut List said pages, because the site can't risk legal issues.

The description of Fangirls is copy/pasted from two sources: Wikipedia and what seems to be the official show description.

Managed to get a hold of copies of the first two volumes of ComicBook.Critter, as well as the "Origins" prequel. How does this sound for an intro?

Cassia Crawford grew up a small-town girl, "Just a li'l critter" raised by her grandmother in rural Michigan. Now, she's a member of the premier superhero team in the world. She's inherited a few things from her mother, the now-deceased "Velvet Fox": telekinetic powers and the earband and tail accessories of her costume, which have some interesting capabilities of their own. It's a typical superheroine job: training, fighting supervillains, and fending off aquatic monsters —with the odd mundane mugger thrown in for a change of pace.

But things are changing: The aquatic monsters are getting organized, another superhero team has a lucrative gig on the line, and several factions seem to have an a great deal of interest in Cass's "Destiny".

  • Also, that page was first created in August. Should we pull the original troper into the discussion? They're still around and editing. (Recent edits seem to be normal/non-problematic)

I think Manga.Though Young People Recoil From Entering The Black Magic Industry's synopsis section is just copy+pasted, running it through google revealed other sites with a lot of the same text.

I think I have found some plagiarism on the character page for The Bill.

The offending passage in question is under DC Ken Drummond's character entry, on the trope Secret Other Family. The passage is:

Ken has children spanning almost a generation, with the youngest eight months and the oldest nineteen years old, with all of them making equal demands of him, whether it be financial or emotional. Somewhere along the line, Ken found himself in a second relationship, and he did not have the heart to end his relationship with either woman. When more kids arrived on the scene, Ken found it harder to secretly play the family man to both families. This explains why Ken sees work as a refuge from his hectic home life

This looks like it was copy and pasted directly over from The Bill's wiki page here, as there is an identical passage in the first paragraph:

https://thebill.fandom.com/wiki/Ken_Drummond

I'm going to delete this entry and see if I can find other examples on the page.

EDIT: I've found another example from the same troper. This time it was under DI Chris Deakin's entry and read:

Detective Inspector Chris Deakin joined Sun Hill's CID when he was thrown out of the Flying Squad and forced to suffer the indignity of being disciplined by demotion because of his affair with a senior officer's wife.

This was also copied and pasted from the same website as the previous example:

https://thebill.fandom.com/wiki/Chris_Deakin

I have deleted the entry.

In both cases, it came from the same troper, ~Foxley

Chocolate Com Pimenta lifted its description wholesale from The Other Wiki.

Check it out.

If nobody minds, I'll just cut down the page's synopsis to two sentences to remove the plagiarized material.

EDIT: Nvm, already did.

I did that? No, that can't be right. I'm sure I wrote it first based on my own observations, then it was copied by the wiki.

The wiki has previously been known for copying and pasting information from Tv Tropes, incluiding the personality of characters from DBS that I myself wrote. I don't remember that day (it was years ago), but I don't remember copying and pasting information.

Regardless, I'm going to rewrite those entries just in case. It has been a long time.

One more, from Acampamento Legal.

Ripped off from the show's wiki. Since the page consist of less than a dozen tropes (eleven to be precise, 8 which I've commented out due to lacking in context), all which are ZCE, cutlist?

EDIT: Another one, Malhação, made by the same guy. Entire opening synopsis lifted from Wikipedia.

ANOTHER EDIT: Rule of Three, I guess, but Mulheres Apaixonadas ripped off it's content from The Other Wiki again.

I think it's the very same offender in all three cases. Or should I say, three here, and 32 in the ATT?

[up][up] Again, I don't rememebr that day. I did agree to rewrite the entries because I can't trust my memory of that day. It is weird that I did such a big edit though.

I rewrote two entries, but I'm struggling with the other two. Could you remind me which entries are the ones that were copy-pasted?

Original:

  • After Trunks got home in "A Worldwide Problem", Baby Vegeta said: "It's been a long time, eh son? ... The last time was on the planet M-2." However, Baby last saw (and possessed) Trunks on the planet Pital, not M-2.
  • When Baby uses the Dragon Balls to revive Planet Vegeta, he makes all of Earth's inhabitants move there. This is despite the fact that, as stated in the Saiyan and Freeza Sagas, Planet Vegeta's atmosphere is too heavy for normal Earthlings to handle. By all accounts, the Earthlings shouldn't be able to even stand on that planet.

Rewrite:

  • Baby tells Trunks during their reunion in episode 28 that they last met in Planet M-2. This isn't possible, as Baby possessed Trunks on the planet Pital in episode 24.
  • Baby revives Planet Vegeta with the Black Star Dragon balls, and in turn, moves the inhabitants of Earth in order to have slaves to rule. The problem comes from the Saiyan saga establishing Planet Vegeta has a different atmosphere than Earth, thus, it makes no sense Earthlings can even stand in there.

I do think I did copy pasted these two, but I don't think they were from the wiki. I was copying someone's else list of things that didn't make sense, which in turn were copied from the wiki and I didn't notice. Whatever, I'm not looking for excuses, I'm fixing my mistake. What do you think of the rewrite?

Professional literature tends to have lengthier blurbs than fanfic, since they (usually) can't rely on established characters and setting to hook people. But if it's short enough to fit, and there's nothing better there already, it would work fine.

Most of the descriptions for Total Drama Do Over are copy/pasted from the Total Drama wiki or official character bios. I'm gonna work my way through the series and do cleanup myself (same with all the ZCE — it's an old page).
