This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.
Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:
- If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
- If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
- You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
- Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
- If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
- Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

Might as well. I'm planning on adding Exactly What It Says on the Tin since it really needs TRS but like The Quisling has been kind of shafted over the years (though EWISOTT had a short-lived cleanup thread IIRC).
Silver and gold, silver and goldI have added it to Wick Check Project
Ocean | He/TheyYeah, that was a brain fart on my part, because they were both recent TRS threads that dealt with misuse of preexisting terms. I just mistakenly referred to the wrong one, so I fixed my post to account for the one I meant to refer to.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Your post on the last page doesn’t appear to be fixed. “…the trope that used the latter name was moved to Child Supplants Parent, and UsefulNotes.Stockholm Syndrome was made to cover the original term…”
Thanks.

Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project!OK, now it should actually be fixed this time. I kind of took a break from TRS stuff the past few days partially due to health problems and partially because I was waiting for the UTF-8 conversion to be completed, in the latter case due to the two times the site was read-only for a relatively long amount of time, so it seems like I got kind of rusty.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. The thread for Shipping Goggles is done, so paging ~Morgan Wick since he asked to be given a chance to make his thread himself before letting someone else do it.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. The Shipping Goggles / Mistaken for Romance thread was closed, but the work is incomplete. The description for Mistaken for Romance was tweaked, but still describes the previous, narrower definition (platonic love confused for romantic love), rather than the expanded definition (any type of relationship confused for romantic love).
Shiny Sense was merged with Notice This for being starving and The Same, but More Specific to Notice This. If it was The Same, but More Specific, why not redirect it instead of cutting? That way, inbounds (1141 of them) would be preserved. Isn't that what is usually done in these cases?
Edited by Twiddler on Dec 10th 2023 at 10:17:41 AM
I brought back Shipping Goggles' thread so the description can be fixed, but I'm not seeing a problem with the outcome of Shiny Sense's thread. The inbound count wasn't that high relative to how old the page was (and I already explained that in the thread itself, so I don't know why you're bringing that up now); that amount would be high for a newer page, but that page was pretty old.
Edit: In addition, redirects are also meant for searchability in addition to inbounds. I fail to see how Shiny Sense would help people find Notice This, so I don't see how it would be useful for that task either, so I stand by the decision to cut.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. So, the fact that the thread for Shipping Goggles / Mistaken for Romance was brought back means we're at 51 slots, but the rewrite for the revised definition for the latter is the only task left (since dewicking was done), so it shouldn't take long to free that slot.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Other old pages with similar or lower inbound counts have been turned into redirects, though:
- Dramatic Landfall Shot (243 inbounds)
- Was Actually Friendly (353)
- Genre Title Grab Bag (509)
- Going to Be One of Those Days (805)
- Literary Necrophilia (990)
- Bath Kick (1,283)
- Vengeful Widow (1,442)
- Minorly Mentioned Myths and Monsters (1,453)
- Quote Swear Unquote (1,475)
- Pay Phone (1,547)
- Super Coach (1,544)
- Results Not Typical (1,555)
Fine, it's been redirected. I don't know why this is being relitigated now, though, because it doesn't strike me as a big deal.
Edit: Worst-case scenario, it can be cut again by a different mod if it's determined that we don't need the redirect.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. No issue there. I didn't think I was presenting it as a big deal; the reasoning just didn't seem consistent with that of other pages.

For the record, noticed and removed the TRS tag from Event-Obscuring Camera.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupDid the same with Hurting Hero and Magical Girl. I also accidentally did the same to Ambiguously Brown before I noticed it was actually on page 2 of the TRS thread list (with page 2 only existing because Mistaken for Romance was brought back from the Morgue because the description needed a bit more work to bring it in line with the expanded definition), but I caught the mistake and reverted it (and updated the tag's formatting to use header markup instead of WMG markup, since we switched to the former at some point).

Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project!Has the work been done for Magical Girl and Dark Magical Girl?
Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project! No, I don't think the work on Dark Magical Girl has been finished yet. If you wanna take up the task, post in the Dark Magical Girl thread that you'll be doing so.
As for Magical Girl, the work on that's been done for a while now.

This is Idol Tap. (My Troper Wall)A while back a TRS thread for Most Annoying Sound was launched, which resulted in the page being moved to Darth Wiki. Problem is, the thread was wick-check-less.
Would Most Annoying Sound have required a wick check by modern standards? I ask because I think the trope feels out of place being in Darth Wiki, and that it likely would have stayed in Main had it had a wick check.
This is Idol Tap. (My Troper Wall)We gradually became more strict with requiring wick checks over the few years following that thread's creation. By the time I became a mod in late 2021, I think we had established the current standards.
Either way, considering how many past TRS threads used standards less strict than what we use now (particularly ones from the early '10s), it wouldn't be worth the time to relitigate all of them, so we should leave them alone unless a new reason to make a TRS thread comes up.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I closed The Dragon's thread because while I generally prefer to avoid flat-out rejecting threads, I feel that it would be a better fit for Projects, and pretty much any change would be too time-consuming due to how many wicks that trope has.
Paging ~good-morning since they're up next in the Queue.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. The problem is I'm not really sure what a project's thread could do. The issue doesn't stop at "it's misused"; bizarre requirements such as misusing two other tropes in the definition are what's causing half of the misuse (conflating Big Bad with "worst bad guy" and using Number Two out of a military setting which seems required). A cleanup is way too hard under those circumstances.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessSo...should we re-open the thread? Or just continue discussion in the Trope Talk thread?
