Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Once again, Sand Blaster is the newer subtrope so a lot of examples from Dishing Out Dirt probably fit it best. You don't need agreement to move something to a more specific trope if it's otherwise clear it fits.

An Arthur example:

  • Friend to All Children: While Binky is still a child himself, he befriends D.W. in S3's "The Chips are Down" (to the bafflement of Arthur and friends) and her friend Emily in S13's "The Good, the Bad, and the Binky".

If he's a child himself, then why add the trope?

The age difference is only 4 years, which does make a huge developmental difference when you're a child or teenager compared to when both of you are adults.

However, are tropes flexible enough to the point where this can extend to older kids and preteens befriending preschoolers, just as teens befriending little kids or adults befriending high schoolers would count?

From Lacus Clyne's section in Characters.Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny:

  • Hidden Buxom: Lacus generally wears somewhat conservative clothing and is depicted as modestly endowed, particularly compared to Meer's Buxom Is Better, when even fans in-show notice and comment on the difference. However, some of the openings depict her with Barbie Doll Anatomy and others as well as the mid-episode eye-catches have her in a very low-cut Pimped-Out Dress, so Depending on the Artist, Lacus' bust may be considerably bigger than it may first appear.

Does this example fit?

I have a question about this entry on YMMV.She Hulk Attorney At Law:

  • Signature Scene: For better or worse, She-Hulk twerking with Megan Thee Stallion quickly became well-known on social media.

So isn't this trope about the one scene everyone knows. I can't help but feel that this is not that. Like I can't put my finger on why. Anyone more familiar with this trope want to give their opinions?

Feels like we need more than a month or so to establish that trope. What about the fight scenes with Daredevil, or the final episode where Jen shatters the Fourth Wall into tiny pieces?

At least from the little bit I've gathered (I'm not into superheroes) the twerking scene might be the most well-known scene among the GP, but either way, it's too soon to make that call.

Cut it, and I went ahead and brought the trope to the recent examples thread because Fighteer and I both felt it was too early to make that call regardless.

For the record, as a non-Marvel fan, the only scene I ever see on my feed is the twerking scene. I've seen bits and pieces of the fourth wall bit, but the twerking thing seems to go beyond fandom as the meme of the show.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

I'm inclined to agree. I only use my Twitter account for work-related purposes, but She-Hulk has come across my feed a couple of times, and it's always been the twerking scene.

That said, I agree that the trope may need a specific period of time for something to become established enough to confirm it's a trope example.

Re: Friend to All Children: I don't think I'd use it for a kid befriending younger kids on an adult show, but I'm good with it for a kids show like Arthur. The characters Arthur's age treat D.W. and other characters her age as "kids", and the audience that's Arthur's age probably sees them the same way.

remember Friend to All Children is not "has a couple of younger friends" but "being great with kids is a positive character trait". That example is the former, not the latter, regardless of age difference.

I'm a bit unsure about the Unwitting Instigator of Doom example that's just been added to X-Men Red (2022).

In a previous series, two of Marvel's characters - Black Bolt and Vulcan - fall into a Negative Space Wedgie. Vulcan is a dangerously unstable, extremely powerful mutant.

The trope's listed against Black Bolt, for surviving.

  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Issue 8 reveals Black Bolt played an indirect role in shaping Brand's Long Game. Having been believed killed at the end of War of Kings, Black Bolt of course survived and later escaped the Fault during Hickman's Fantastic Four. His survival, however, convinced Brand that Vulcan might also still be alive and trapped down there. Her suspicions were ultimately proven correct and it gave her an opening to create the perfect Manchurian Agent she needed to precipitate a galactic conflict.

That feels like it's stretching it a little bit?

Edit: For context, Black Bolt hasn't appeared in this series at all. The only reference to him is a "Black Bolt returned from the Fault - Vulcan could have survived as well" on a page listing the villain's evil plans.

One of the rules for Salvaged Story is that later plot development doesn't count. Does that only refer to one particular entry in a franchise, or do later entries count as "plot development?" Regarding a character, what's the difference between this and Character Rerailment?

[up]I don't think later entries count and it just has to be the same adaptation. As for the Character Rerailment part, that involves the character returning to their old characterization and Salvaged Story doesn't have to involve that.

Is this useful? (For the record, I'm asking because I want to make sure I'm being helpful.)

From the YMMV of House of the Dragon:

  • Fan-Disliked Explanation: Many fans were disappointed to learn that the reason Rhaenys didn't roast the Greens with Meleys in "The Green Council" was due to viewing the situation as not her fight and sympathy for Alicent as a mother, since in the next episode Rhaenys outright tells Rhaenyra that there will be a war coming because of the Greens, and Meleys' Big Entrance wiped out many smallfolk, plenty of whom were mothers themselves. Viewing herself as an outsider to the Black-Green conflict makes little sense either, since both her grand-daughters are married into Rhaenyra's family and the Greens are directly usurping Baela's lawful status as future Queen-consort. Fans instead prefer to believe that Rhaenys spared them to avoid becoming a kinslayer, which Word of God has very explicitly stated to be untrue.
    • Most attempts to explain Daemon's choking of Rhaenyra have fallen on deaf ears, mostly because they rarely go beyond pointing out that Daemon is a bad person and completely ignore that despite all of his horrible crimes, he has also been previously established to be a loving husband to Rhaenyra who respects his wife.

The second bullet just said that some fans hate daemon for choking Rhaenyra, not for any explanation of why that happen (like he was controlled by someone).

Would this forum also be the place to ask if potholes/links to tropes are used correctly?

I'd like to bring up this Scream (1996) example from The Red Stapler page:

  • The Buck knife company put their 120 model hunting knife back into production after the first film used it as the model for Ghostface's Weapon Of Choice, leading to a surge in demand. Ironically, it had actually been discontinued a few years prior due to complaints that it was too big for its intended purpose of skinning and gutting animals — and one of the film's most famous scenes involves Ghostface telling a victim that he's going to gut her like a fish!

What's specifically concerning is the "Ironically" word in the second sentence being linked to Irony as She Is Cast. That is supposed to involve irony between actors and their roles, but the Irony as She Is Cast in the above example is somehow being applied to a knife?

Is there a better "irony trope" replacement for that pothole/link? Or is it just easier to remove that link instead?

YMMV.Turning Red

Older Than They Think: This is also not the first time Disney was involved with an animated film about an Asian girl growing up and having to deal with puberty, as they infamously gave Studio Ghibli's 1991 film Only Yesterday the No Export for You treatment for tackling menstruation in one sequence. Disney still distributed the film in some territories like Japan (home video rights only, as the theatrical rights were with Toho), China and Taiwan. GKIDS would eventually end up releasing the film with an English dub when they rescued the North American license from Disney.

Does this count? While Disney did distribute the film in a couple of territories, they aren't directly involved with the film itself (as the film is by Studio Ghibli, who is independent from Disney), so this feels like a slight stretch. What do you all think?
