Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

[up]An actor appearing in two works with different levels of adult content doesn't sound like anything at all. There's nothing special about actors having roles in works with adult content and works without adult content. It might be Playing Against Type if the role or roles was iconic, but it doesn't sound like it. Was this role in Game of Thrones anything more than a cameo?

Ed Sheeran's more known for his music than appearing in Game of Thrones. I didn't even know he'd appeared in GOT.

It's true his music is a bit more adult oriented but I feel the same could be said for Katy Perry, who also appeared in Pokemon promo material and has done other kids' stuff too.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Will also add that Sheeran’s cameo was seen as misfit at the time as well, since he’s a very modern pop singer.

He's not primarily known for the cameo, right? A single, minor appearance in a mature work doesn't mean a creator does mature works.

Is it me or would this example from Transformers: Energon seem like it would fit better under Pop-Culture Urban Legends:

  • Common Knowledge: It's a popular rumor that Starscream in the original Japanese version is a clone (probably stemming from how he is renamed to "Nightscream" only in Japan) and that the dub changed him to the same character as his Armada self. In actuality, even the original dialogue refers to "Nightscream" as one of Megatron's past soldiers and Alpha Q just gives him a new name, meaning he's a revived Starscream there too.

And from the same page can one work qualify as a Dork Age?:

  • Dork Age: Beyond simply being regarded as an inferior sequel to Armada (by both the show's fans and detractors), it's regarded as the worst TF show period, due to wasted potential, terrible CGI, and very poor dubbing.

From Characters.Toy Story Lotso:

  • 0% Approval Rating: While Lotso rules Sunnyside Daycare, there is not a single toy that likes him. Even his own minions serve him out of fear, and eventually turn against him when his abuse and nihilism go too far.

Is this a valid example or should it be under Hated by All?

A troper just posted this example to the Leave It to Beaver page.

  • Gosh Dang It to Heck!:
    • The words "heck" and "darn" are popular oaths for Wally, the Beaver and their friends.
    • Swearing does explicitly exist on the show. One comical moment has Beaver telling his father that he went to the lake with Larry. They saw a man slip on a rock at the lake, and then heard everything he said.
    • Another time, at the end of the fourth season, Beaver gets angry and swears in the school hallway. Beaver's caught by Miss Landers, who insists Beaver bring in his mother or father. Later, at home, Beaver whispers his phrase to Wally. The brothers are in agreement they can't tell their mother exactly what Beaver said. Unfortunate Ward Cleaver is away on business, so Wally shows up at school as Beaver's "Substitute Parent".

The trope page states:

Note: This is a page for listing moments where swearing is deliberately censored or a replacement to a real world swear word is used. It is not a page to list moments where you personally think that swearing would have looked cool, or for moments where you believe swearing would have improved a line.

Does this qualify? I could see the first example possibly being okay (though I'm dubious, as these kids probably wouldn't have been swearing as a matter of course anyway), but the other two don't seem to illustrate the trope at all. For the last one, we never actually see Beaver's swear word incident (which would have been censored) on screen.

[up] Points 2 and 3 read like natter to me. They might fit some other swearing tropes, such as Narrative Profanity Filter or Swear Word Plot, but I can't tell.

Does this from Gen Zed count as Blatant Lies?

  • Their selling point about using the first transgender voice actress in a leading role is a lie. Maddie Blausteinnote  was in the VA industry for years, and was the first trans VA for many agencies she worked for. Furthermore, Casey Mongillo beat them to the punch by at least a month.note

I was going to remove it for being a meta trope example, but then I realized I couldn't find anything against that in What Goes Where on the Wiki.

Validity of "meta" examples aside, the key word in Blatant Lies is "blatant". That there is just a regular lie.

Two examples from Series. The Blacklist which I'm not sure if they fit:

  • Camp: Downplayed. Some of the villains are camp (mainly Villain of the Week or Filler Villain-types), but by no means sissy all the time, a lot are quite badass, but they are still campy in a way that's "low camp" (i.e. unintentionally); they're not flamboyant in a way that's sparkly and overly saccharine in performance. However, the protagonist Raymond Reddington can be camp at times, if only due to his Large Ham behavior.
  • Status Quo Is God: Out the window by Season 3.

I think the last one may be a zero-context example, but am I right in thinking that the show never had Status Quo Is God in the first place, forgotten since it was that long ago it listed in the example.

[up] Last one is definitely a ZCE. As for the first one, can you play with Camp? I don't think so, it seems weird. Something is either theatrically exaggerated, or it's not.

Given that American-Canadian singer-songwriter Stephanie Martin's only English-language anime role was Izumi Marufuji in the Interlude OVA, does this fall under One-Hit Wonder or One-Book Author?

I have a question for an example I have for Made of Iron.

The example I have in mind involves the character, named Alan, doing or undergoing certain things which should cause him great injury (eg. getting bit by a dog, running through a window and crashing it, etc). Even other characters comment on it. Turns out they hint to the later reveal of Alan being somewhat of a cyborg (he was given technical implants to enhance his abilities after being struck by a life-threatening disease), so he is partly made of metal.

However, the playing with page for Made of Iron says examples can't be justified, so I'm wondering if I'm looking for a different trope entirely. In this story, two prior mishaps turn out to have been much more severe for Alan in retrospect / with later given knowledge, yet he suffered little injury. If nothing else, I can write an example for it Chekhov's Gun or some other related trope.

Examples cannot be justified because those would be different tropes: namely Super-Toughness or Nigh-Invulnerability. Made of Iron is specifically when there is no in-story explanation for how the character can survive such injuries.

If Made of Iron is specifically about the lack of explanation, then would an explanation showing up later constitute a subversion of the trope? At first they appeared to be Made of Iron, but it turned out they were actually Super Tough or whatever.
