Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Go Out with a Smile is defined as smiling before death. There are some examples of people who smile after elimination in reality shows. Do these count? Or is it misuse?

Are these okay? I asked the same question in the TRS thread but I haven't got feedback.

Personally I think these are misuse.

  • WTH, Costuming Department?: In the time skip, the mane-5 look too old (even older than their parents in the present time) because of the animators' decision to add exaggerated eyebags. Indeed, a fan makes a video edit to remove them.

Is this the right trope as it’s not costume related? Is Unnecessary Makeover a better trope? Or Fanon Discontinuity (as it points out how fans seem to reject it)?

Two from Unsolved Mysteries :

First, regarding the "please call" end narration

  • What makes it even more creepy aside from the announcement by this mysterious woman but the fact that there may have been people willing to give their names while admitting vital information about unsolved crimes and wanted individuals!*

The last part of this links to fridge horror....what is Fridge Horror about that?

Second, under Values Dissonance The Dottie Caylor segment was a bit awkward, to say the least. On its face it was a pretty standard missing persons story, featuring a shy, agoraphobic woman disappeared after boarding a train. However, the segment includes an interview with her husband Jule, who makes no bones about the fact that he despised Dottie and he's happy she is gone. He even goes so far as to admit that he threatened her with a knife in supposed self-defense, and that he regretted not killing her when he had the chance. For a show that usually took great pains to paint missing people in a positive light, it is truly bizarre that they included Jule's interview in the segment.

What values are being....dissonanced here?

Is this General? Anyone editing this should also fix the namespacing of the works.

Science Marches On: Other/Multiple: Real Life: Last Example:

  • Martians or the idea of any form of native alien civilization on the planet Mars is now no longer taken seriously by scientists. What has changed since War Of The Worlds, John Carter,The Martian Chronicles and Robinson Crusoe on Mars? We have now sent probes to Mars. And from what they reveal, there has been no evidence of past or present alien civilizations on Mars. Most likely, the first and only Martians will be humans if the planet is ever colonized.

[up][up]I can't tell at all what the second one is trying to say. Sounds like the guy should probably have been a potential suspect in his wife's disappearance, but without more context I have no idea where Values Dissonance would factor into that.

From YMMV.Spyro Reignited Trilogy:

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Tonal and enunciation changes have given some of the dragons slightly different personalities from the original even with the same lines. For example, Cyrus in High Caves goes from pleading Spyro to help with the green druids to being more annoyed by them than anything else, and Cedric from the same level sounds like he's dispensing learned advice rather than the rougher sound and practical knowledge of the original voice actor.
    • While Elora's lines stay the same, some of the way she says them in the new version seem to make her friendlier and more flirty with Spyro than in the original: most notably "I'm a faun, you dork!" where she sounded irritated and insulted in the original, but more amused at the silly mistake in the remake.

Shouldn't these go somewhere else, since they don't seem to be fan interpretations? Maybe Adaptation Personality Change?

Also

  • Were Still Relevant Dammit: The purple crafters of Enchanted Towers sport scarfs and to-go polystyrene coffee cups, popularly associated with hipsters.

Wasn't that a stereotype even circa 2000?

Out of curiosity, does Unique Enemy apply to final bosses in video games? I was browsing Fire Emblem and noticed that some of the entries mention final bosses. Unique Enemy mentions minibosses not counting, and I was wondering if the same applies to final bosses (or bosses in general, since bosses seem like they should naturally be unique from other enemies).

Tabs, thanks for your feedback on Go Out with a Smile.

  • Face Death with Dignity: In contrast to the way his friends and his brother meet their ends, A. Jay's death comes off as this (mostly). While he still kicks and squirms as the woman, who fully intends on eating him, dangles him in front of her while checking him out. And he still flails about as she tosses him in the air and catches him in her mouth. But unlike his band mates he is less panicky and doesn't resort to begging her.

It feels like shoehorning to me. Do you agree?

(Drakos 25 keeps Entry Pimp-ing Music.Miserable, almost to a ridiculous degree. In a way, it's genuinely impressive, to have a page for just one song and music video this long, but I think Drakos doesn't understand that Tropes Are Tools and that using or not using a particular trope doesn't make the work better, nor worse. Also, every time I point out an issue with his editing, like ZCE, he takes it too personally. That's why I want your feedback. Thanks.)

Anyway, I'd rather not make any report on ATT myself. See previous query.

The Heart is not those things.

Invisible Parents isn't just "Parents are Unseen", but "Parents Are Unseen in Places they should be seen", like houses?

I'm not sure if my Card City Nights examples count, nor if VideoGame.Katawa Shoujo counts as listed on the page...

  • Invisible Parents: In both games, to different degrees.
    • First game: The only parents we see are The Kid's parents, Veteran Miner and Fiery Woman, and while we see other families, like Little Dude and his grandfather The Card King, or Small Boss and her big sister Tall Skater, we never see any other parents.
    • Second game: The only parents mentioned, are Serious Scientist's, who made her suit, and her parents and brother have similar suits, but she doesn't give any information on their location other than it being "complicated".

  • Hisao's father in Katawa Shoujo only appears in one scene in the prologue, and does not have a sprite, like many of the visual novel's extremely minor and nameless characters do. Lilly's mother is also only heard on the other end of the phone in Hanako and Lilly's routes.

This entry from Characters/Beastars is not a proper example, right? I'm not seeing the Blessed part.

  • Blessed with Suck: Due to being a herbivore/carnivore hybrid, he inherited instincts from both which make his every day life a living hell. Such as a complete loss of taste, an inability to digest meat, shunning away from large predator-species by default, and the involuntarily desire to utterly slaughter any herbivore he lays his eyes upon.

Would the following be a better fit for Older Than They Look, Mistaken Age, or possibly both?

  • The Monster Duchess and Contract Princess: Due to abuse that included regularly being Denied Food as Punishment, Leslie Sperado is small, skinny, and is frequently assumed to be nine or ten years old rather than her actual age of twelve. This is exaggerated when she first meets Bethrion. Between his only frame of reference being his younger brother and the fact that his family are all naturally large people, he initially assumes Leslie is five.

I initially went for Older Than They Look because, in-story, she is small and stunted for her age. However, after noticing Mistaken Age, I wonder if that might be better as people getting her she wrong is a frequent occurrence.

In the case of both, I was considering Older Than They Look for Leslie's entry in the character sheet, where it is currently, and Mistaken Age for the main work page, since it's a reaction had by multiple characters.

Reposting from the previous thread:

I have another Shin Sakura Wars example that I would like to propose here.

While Azami Mochizuki usually wears a yellow maid outfit, she serves as a ninja of the Mochizuki clan and doesn't do any maid work.

Does this count as a true subversion of the Ninja Maid trope?
