Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

I feel like The Starscream has had its definition tightened up in the last year or three; I created a page some time ago, Kingdom Adventure, and there's this one character in the work named Dagger. He works as a spy, infiltrator, imposter, and messenger for the Big Bad (a warlock named Zordock), and he's more or less on equal footing with another character called Magistrate Pitts, who's The Quisling and The Dragon, since both Dagger and Pitts report directly to Zordock, and neither orders the other around on his own.

There was one episode where it looked like Pitts was about to get killed by a beast, and Dagger started musing about the possibility of taking Pitts' job as magistrate. This is the only time in the series where Dagger wants to take anyone else's job, at least as far as I know.

I treated that moment where Dagger wanted to take Pitt's job as an example of The Starscream (though I called it downplayed since Dagger never actively plotted to take anyone's job), and maybe at the time it really was a legitimate example: I remember the description of The Starscream saying that trying to take someone else's job in the same evil organization counted, even if it would be a lateral move if the attempt was successful. But now The Starscream seems to be exclusively about a villain trying to take their boss's job, and lateral moves are not considered examples, at least not anymore. For that matter, the trope now seems to be exclusively about characters who actively scheme to take their boss's job, and the description contrasts that with opportunists.

With all that context in mind, is Dagger no longer an example of The Starscream?

For that matter, should the downplayed examples in the Starscream's Playing With page be removed or revised?

There's been no recent TRS threads. If nobody altered the description, then the definition never changed.

This example for Control Freak from Baldur's Gate III was unilaterally cut by another troper who called it "demonization":

I like the character, but he has some pretty blatant flaws and even his own entry on the character page lists him as Ambiguously Evil.

Malady: If they're more of a disappointment or too easy, then they'd fit Anti-Climax Boss more. That One Boss is usually more for stupidly hard and/or finicky bosses.

CSS1: Looks good and it seems to fit the example.

Stankykong: With that description, the Emperor could easily be seen as a Control Freak. I don't think he could be "demonized" given how he seems to be a backstabber at best. You can reinstate the trope.

StewieGriffin34: Yeah I agree, he works more as Inexplicably Awesome, given his powers and how he still is shown as blind.

I didn't know where else to take this. I removed this from Trivia.Snow White 2025

  • Troubled Production: Despite not even being finished yet, the production has garnered a shocking amount of drama both behind the scenes and in the press, mostly having to do intense backlash over the cast and screenplay.
    • While the casting of the non-white Rachel Zegler in the title role drew a fair amount of backlash for playing an originally-Caucasian character (The Little Mermaid (2023) had run a similar gauntlet with Halle Bailey's casting), it was her off-camera behavior that really drew controversy. When interviewed at the D23 Expo in 2022, Zegler described her take on Snow White as someone who longs to be a strong leader instead of finding love, while also denouncing the Prince as a "stalker" who might even be written out of the remake altogether. In another interview, she revealed that she'd seen the original 1937 film only once prior to being cast and hated it, and even mentioned that she felt uncomfortable wearing Snow White's iconic dress. Zegler's comments drew criticism for what many saw as enforcing a shallow view of feminism, as well as expressing disdain for the source material that's been described as disrespectful and biting the hand that's feeding her.
    • In January 2022, dwarf actor Peter Dinklage appeared on WTF with Marc Maron, where he described upcoming film as being based on a "backward story", prompting Disney to announce that they were taking a "different approach" with the depiction of the Seven Dwarfs. Many in the dwarfism community accused Dinklage of unduly speaking on their behalf and, since he's one of a few dwarf actors to achieve any mainstream fame, apparently pulling up the ladder from his own people and costing them acting roles. In July 2023, leaked photos from a U.K. set revealed seven stand-ins acting as the dwarfs; the actors were of various ethnicities, with only one actually having dwarfism. It was later described that the dwarfs would be reimagined as "magical companions" of different shapes, sizes and genders, leading to a firestorm of accusations that Disney was going too far in terms of political correctness. The issue seemed to have subsided somewhat later that October, when Disney released a first-look image of the dwarfs that clearly shows them as little men rendered with CGI.
    • In October 2023, Disney announced that the film would be delayed by a whole year to March 2025, which was blamed on the then-ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, but various outlets have speculated it also had to do with growing executive wariness over the film's controversies and ballooning budget. While a film's budget is normally kept under wraps, Disney had to reveal their costs so they can earn some of it back from the British government's Film Tax Relief. With nearly $210 million invested on production, it's speculated that the total budget is over $330 million (more than Avengers: Infinity War); and Disney is planning on reshoots, meaning even more money will be spent. With Snow White on track to be one of the most expensive movies ever made, Disney execs are, according to some "insider" sources, fearing a potential box-office failure that could jeopardize the company's plans for future live-action remakes and other Snow White-related content.
    • In addition to the first-look image of the CG dwarfs, Zegler also released a statement recognizing how much people cared about the original material and stated she "didn't want to mess it up for anybody". This lent credence to the idea that the backlash against the leaked material was so great—combined with the long string of Box Office Bombs from the company throughout 2023—that Disney completely changed course on the project to save it.

I removed it because it doesn't read like an example of a hectic production and is more focused on fan reaction then what happened. The only one that does mention something close like reshoots or budget is based more on speculation. Even mentioning "political correctness" as a reason for it being troubled. However, I just realized that maybe I should have gotten more opinions. Should I add this back? Rewrite? Or just keep off until we have more confirmed info.

[up][up] It doesn't seem like criminal fronts are included, no.

[up] I'd prefer to leave it gone until we have more information. The third and fourth bullet points seem like they could be describing the start of an actual troubled production. The first two are just fans complaining about leaked information (not sure how there are any fans of Disney live action adaptions to be complaining in the first place, but whatever).

On YMMV.Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online, there's an Angst? What Angst? entry about Karen (LLENN) playing an MMO character who's too cute for the game's setting. While I'm pretty sure that's already stretching the definition, it's also a central character trait of hers that's treated as unusual in-universe. That automatically disqualifies it from being Angst? What Angst?, right?

For context, here's what it says:

Angst? What Angst?: For a grim and brutal "world of guns", LLENN tends to treat GGO like a giant playground where she can role play at being cute.

Found this weird example for Breaking Bad:

* Life Imitates Art: Subverted - Albuquerque has in 2022 an extremely bad drug problem, but it is not meth but fentanyl.
Besides the fact that it’s been turned into trivia and can’t be subverted, the example just seems weird to bring up in this fashion.

Proposing something. Is this an example of Technology Marches On?

Trivia/Epic Rap Battles Of History

  • Technology Marches On: Steve Jobs bets that the beat "was made on Apple", while Bill Gates retorts that the beat is made in FL Studio, therefore it is made on a PC. At the time the battle was made (2012), FL Studio didn't have Mac support, until 2018. Now, Mac users too can use the aformenetioned DAW.

[up]x5 That's definitely misuse. Making fashion choices that don't fit the general aesthetic of everyone else isn't this trope.

[up] Born Winner seems to fit.

Crutch Character doesn't have enough context to show if it's an example or not. Is this a party member/playable character who is significantly more powerful than the rest of the party members and makes everything easier just by being there?

I don't think Victorious Loser is the trope here, but I can't think of something specific. Maybe you should look for strategy, warfare, or heroism tropes that would fit better?

Unwitting Instigator of Doom fits only if you consider the outcome "doom". A major character dying sounds right though. Another trope that fits here is Nice Job Breaking It, Hero and Disaster Dominoes.
