Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

This thread moves fast. A lot of people's entries get overlooked since not everyone can help in every situation. It's normal, and not targeted.

The funny one is a bit of a ZCE (what makes it funny? focus on that) but the others seem fine, I guess.

Then in that case I’ll upload that clip of Goku vs Superman 2 under Curb-Stomp Battle.

I was going to cite the One Eye Army from The Thief and the Cobbler as an example of the A Thicket of Spears trope, but I’m not sure whether the weapon they’re using is actually a spear, or if that even makes a difference for purposes of the trope.

Here’s the scene in question. What do y’all think?

This was found in Brook's section in Characters. One Piece Straw Hat Pirates:

  • Berserk Button:
    • How dare something turn up its nose after trying to eat him. Bone has plenty of nutritional value! (Becomes a case of Be Careful What You Wish For after encountering the canine Minks on Zou.)
    • On a more serious note, Zeo ordering his men to die and be martyrs seriously angered Brook, who told him off for treating death so lightly.
    • Black Maria and her subordinates trying to trick him with illusions of the Rumbar Pirates practically had him foaming at the mouth.

I wonder if any of these examples count, since Berserk Button is for when a person gets upset over a minor reason?

From YMMV.Eternals 2021:

This feels like misuse - they're both part of the same continuity and Marvel Universe franchise (they're also both work for hire). Gillen's also returned to Loki via Young Avengers.

They do have some similar themes - immortals trapped in a role and trying to escape it and define themselves, rather than being defined by others - but I'm not sure that's enough?

Reposting, for the third time I swear: It's possible to get accidentally softlocked in the final chapter of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance if there are no methods of defeating the final boss (Ike doesn't have enough ATK even with the weapon needed, Ena/Nasir dead, Hard mode where the three endgame Laguz don't join until 2nd phase) - but I don't know if it's intentional (Unwinnable by Design) or accidental (Unintentionally Unwinnable)

Starting point: unless there's some information you've left out, we have no (zero) actual evidence as to the devs' mental state when they constructed these levels. Therefore, we can't conclusively say whether they did this "intentionally" or "accidentally".

However, while the situation you describe comes entirely from purposeful game mechanics working as intended, it doesn't appear to have been constructed as a malicious trap. On the balance of probabilities, we'd file it under Unintentionally Unwinnable.

I've got a YMMV.RWBY query about the following entry:

  • Padding: This is one criticism of Volume 9, because even though Volume 9 contains some important Character Development for the members of Team RWBY, it does nothing to address the many unresolved plot points and Cliffhanger ending of Volume 8.

I'm not sure this is a genuine example of padding, which is supposed to be for something that could be removed from the story because it's pointless to the plot. Volume 9 was advertised prior to release as being a character driven arc for the main characters, to address the emotional fall-out from Volume 8's events (which had a "Ray of Hope" Ending). And that's exactly what the volume proceeded to do. It also gave the characters and audience new information about the setting that wasn't previously known, information that could — for the first time in the story — provide a solution to the fact that the Big Bad is an apparently Invincible Villain due to Complete Immortality.

The big complaint in the fandom about Volume 9 was that there weren't enough episodes to handle what was happening, and so the last few episodes ended up feeling rushed. Relevant to this entry, there were elements of the fandom who didn't like the volume because of the character/emotional focus and its isolation from the main setting/cast/plot. So, it's very much a rejected storyline by this part of the fandom. I think the entry wants to capture that complaint, but I think it's misusing Padding and a different audience reaction or YMMV item needs to be found.

Anyway, thoughts would be much appreciated.

So, two ideas suddenly popped up to me, and I thought I should at least ask if these examples count:

First, does Miles X Peni from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse count as a Crack Pairing? There's a significant amount of art for that ship, but the two do know each other despite rarely interacting, and Miles has more interest in Gwen anyway, so... does it fit?

Second is mostly related to Miraculous Ladybug's Revolution, for the YMMV page:

Ladybug and Chat Noir unlock their adult powers as a result of being pushed to their limit after being captured by Queen Mayor's robots and start detransforming. Does this count as an Ass Pull? Because I don't remember the story stating that being pushed to the limit could cause a teenage wielder to unlock their powers prematurely, only that adult wielders don't have a time limit placed on their powers.

Too reasonable to be a Crack Pairing

And... the show has a sizable fandom. You can check up on the audience response for that plot development.

The Runaways entry in Naturalized Name are all based on fan theory rather than anything shown in the comics itself. Remove?

  • Runaways:
    • Karolina's parents are aliens from Majesdane. When they arrived on Earth, they adopted the names Frank and Leslie Dean. It's never been revealed what their real names are.
    • There's a longstanding theory among fans that Nico's family used to have a different surname, since "Minoru" is usually a male given name.
    • A similar theory holds that Victor Mancha's mother had a much more conventionally Mexican surname, but adopted the last name "Mancha" to conceal her criminal past.
    • And yet another theory postulates that Klara Prast's husband had a more conventionally German surname that was Americanized as "Prast".

Bad "Bad Acting" is for when a work tries to show that a person can't act, but overdoes it so the "acting" is far worse than any amateur would be in real life (barring some exceptions.)

With that in mind, there is an episode of Frasier where the titular character has to perform a song that he had done many times before, but only switches to the song at the last minute and has no time to rehearse this performance. He ends up forgetting the words and mangles the song into complete gibberish.

While this is funny, I wonder if this counts as the trope as the effect is ridiculously over-the-top; someone who had performed a song live multiple times likely wouldn't flub the lines to such a horrible extent, even if they did have to throw it on at the last second.

So, it's an example of Bad "Bad Flubbing", I guess?

Can you have Composite Character for an entire nation or group? Or is it solely for individuals? The example is from Final Fantasy XVI. I originally thought to put it under Expy, but it was removed on the basis that something can only be an expy of one character.

  • Composite Character: Sanbreque seems to be a mix of Ishgard and the Garlean Empire from Final Fantasy XIV. It possesses the shining knights, dragoons, theocratic society, and towering spires of the former, as well as the imperialistic ambition, slave-driving atrocities, and mistreatment of magic users of the latter. The emperors of Sanbreque and Garlemald are both addressed as "Your Radiance" by their subjects.

An example of Demoted to Satellite Love Interest was readded back in 2022 after I initially cut it for being misuse, so I figured I'd bring it up here.
  • Fairy Tail: Juvia from Phantom Lord falls head over heels in love with Gray almost as soon as she's introduced as an enemy of his guild, but still starts out as a prominent secondary character with other traits when she joins Fairy Tail, such as her awkwardness around other people, her camaraderie with her old guildmate Gajeel, and her concerns over being truly accepted by her former enemies. As time goes on, however, these other interactions become more sparse until nearly every scene she's in pertains to Gray in some way, whether it's hanging over his every word or being a Clingy Jealous Girl towards any girl who so much as utters his name.
While there's no denying that a lot of Juvia's character is devoted to her, as of now reciprocated, feelings for Gray, the example claims that her other relationships are largely underplayed and she's now focused only on Gray, ignoring how, even in the Alvarez Arc/the final arc of the original series, she still has significant interactions with Lucy, Erza, Wendy, Meredy, Gajeel, Cana, and even Natsu to an extent.

Newly added to Fan Nickname:

    Fandom Meta
  • Blorbo: Any character which a fan is obsessed with. Originated with a Tumblr post complaining about how posts by other people that looked interesting at first glance always turned out to be just gushing about "Blorbo from my shows".
  • Glup Shitto: An obscure character, usually from a spin-off, who causes fans to freak out when they appear in a trailer or teaser for the work's main medium. Originally a Star Wars fan joke referring to appearances from Extended Universe characters in the 2020s streaming shows, but has now spread to other fandoms (eg. the atomic squeeing from elements of Doctor Who fandom when popular spin-off comic villain Beep the Meep appeared in a teaser trailer for the 60th-anniversary TV specials).

...I know we generally dislike 'meta' examples. Does this one really count?
