Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

LRLEO tag:

%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

Lmao that example definitely came from the early 2010s wow

Obviously it should remain cut, I think we can keep the trope as NRLEP but probably just instead say that any examples would be too anecdotal or generalizing.

[up][up][up]I'm inclined to agree. It's exceedingly unlikely to ever attract any real life examples that have any meaning (unless George W. Bush went on record to say that he only invaded Iraq because he had a migraine that day, but that would be silly), and it definitely attracted one decidedly iffy general example at launch (admittedly in the wild west days). While we obviously don't have any evidence that the modern troperbase would add problematic real life examples, there doesn't seem to be anything to gain by reversing course and allowing real life examples.

Victoria's Secret Compartment Real life section is a mess. A bunch of entries are just reiterating the same.

Beware the Superman is a trope about superhumans, which don't exist in real life, making both of its current RL examples misuse (the first one is a general philosophical debate and purely conjectural, the second is interesting, but studies of VR simulations of superpowers and IRL superhumans aren't the same thing. also, real life can't be played with). Permission to cut?

    Real Life
  • Debates over transhumanism and genetic modification occasionally bring this up, the concern being that, someday, the rich would be able to buy their way into becoming physically and intellectually superior to the masses (on top of the social and economic advantages they already have), leading to a society that is even more stratified than our own.
  • Surprisingly, some experiments and studies indicate that this trope would actually be either averted in Real Life or depend heavily on what kind of powers the person gets. People who simulated being a Flying Brick in the vein of Superman were found to act more benevolent and polite to the researchers, as if the very thought of being like Superman caused them to feel the need to be altruistic. Ironically when offered powers on the opposite end of the spectrum like invisibility or mind reading, most refused the idea out of explicit fear that this trope would come into effect; one man, when offered flight or invisibility, chose invisibility only to then change his answer after some thinking. He expressed the fear that being invisible would tempt him to indulge in morally dodgy behavior.

[up]I'd cut the first as general and the second as speculative.

[up][up]We can't make anything NRLEP right this second, but I can definitely give that a quick cleaning. Among other things, I'm seeing a lot of general examples. Edit: I deleted a bunch of general examples.

Should Epileptic Trees be NRLEP? I found some examples on YMMV.Chris Benoit that are just speculation about his murder-suicide.

  • Epileptic Trees:
    • There have been countless theories and explanations of Benoit's actions, mostly involving substance abuse or brain damage. Others believe Benoit was innocent and that all three Benoits were killed by someone else (usually believed to be Kevin Sullivan, Nancy's ex) with the scene being altered to look like a double-murder suicide. Another theory thrown around as a joke is that his death was actually scripted and he's due to return any day now.
    • A big argument these days in regards to the Benoit tragedy is whether or not it still would have happened if Eddie Guerrero hadn't died. As stated repeatedly throughout the article, Eddie was a relatively positive influence on Chris and it seems to be agreed upon that when he passed, Chris essentially went off the rocker. It's left to the imagination what would have happened as a result.

Even if the whole trope isn't made NRLEP, I believe at least those examples should be cut.

Vampires Own Night Clubs has a real life example, which seems odd what with vampires being, y'know, fictional:

  • This website features a directory of vampire-friendly bars and nightclubs in cities.

... well, the site behind the link seems under the impression that vampires are real, but even so, does this even make sense?

...TBH I would really like to preserve that by moving it to some other folder, but I suppose TV Tropes should not be in the business of bringing attention to unhinged internet kooks even if it's only to laugh at them.

Advice needed. I'm sponsoring a TLP draft called Taught to Hate, where somebody was, well, taught to hate a group or person by somebody else. Do you think this needs to be NRLEP?

I would say so. RL examples could very easily be seen as apologism, and I think being taught prejudice is unfortunately too common.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

there is a vampire subculture and some clubs very heavily lean into vampire nights/vampire aesthetic for that (and there's a website for it, the name of which i cannot recall ATM); the website being genuine about vampires being real is a little iffy, tho

I mean, Poe's Law and all, I wouldn't necessarily assume that the website is being completely genuine instead of simply staying "in character" and playing along with the concept of vampire bars.

That said, I also wouldn't be shocked if the website was taking it seriously.

We ended up removing that example anyway on the grounds that "vampire-friendly" is not synonymous with "vampire-owned".

Pretty much all of the Real Life folder on Large Ham Radio is well, radio hosts, which you would think would be in the Radio folder instead. Should those be moved there, with rewrites or tweaks as needed?

For some reason there are real life examples for Writers Cannot Do Math, even though that's specifically about fiction so it's just "people not doing math". But particularly this one seems to break rule of cautious editing judgment:

SAGE, the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies that forms part of the British Government have been accused of this in recent times due to "doomsday" predictions for Delta and Omicron variant during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Mathematicians and data analysts have questioned how well the disease experts knew the math for this.

I really don't think the controversy over how mathematically accurate scientists' predictions were about the recent COVID pandemic belongs in a page about fiction writers getting math wrong...

Doesn’t seem like it. It just means a person known to do a specific type of crime didn’t do that crime in question.

Not Me This Time is specifically about cases where the Big Bad gets blamed but someone else is at fault.

And Big Bad is definitely a NRLEP trope.

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
