Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

Eh, I don't think it's any worse than Opinion Myopia as a whole (and it honestly feels more specific than just "some people don't like toddler show because it's toddler show.")

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

One thing that I don't know if should go here on on the So Bad It's Horrible cleanup.

So basically I had a TRS last year to rename WTH, Casting Agency? to Questionable Casting, due to the original name attracting complaining. However, a lot of SBIH entries still feature the main form of complaining provoked by the original name, which is referring to the cast of a bad thing as "wasted talent". Examples include the entries for Bubsy, the cartoon adaptation of Least I Could Do and The Rapsittie Street Kids: Believe in Santa. Such terminology basically reeks of "How could my beloved deities of voice acting lower themselves by lending their voices to a product that ended up being not good?"

Of course, I mean those entries need a rewrite.

So if one checks the Related tabs for Lying Creator and Trolling Creator they'll see that there are a bunch of wicks for both tropes on WMG pages. I assume that this often happens when a fan theory featured on the pages is initially Jossed, only to turn out to be true due to Lying Creator and/or Trolling Creator...and vice versa. Problem is, given the nature of WMG it's easy for someone to vehemently and needlessly complain about their theory being true/jossed.

Much of the works featured on the two Related tabs are for works I have not experienced, so I'm not gonna spoil myself on works I unfamiliar with by checking out those WMG pages. My point is, I'm hopeful there isn't too much "complaining about theories being true/jossed" on those WMG pages with Lying Creator and Trolling Creator wicks.

This is more of a general question: do we need a cleanup project for The Twilight Saga? The pages were obviously created when the hatedom was at its height—I would know, I was a vocal hater back in the day. (I cringe at it now; a lot of it was Not Like Other Girls bullshit.) While a lot of the criticism and snark towards the series is warranted, a lot of it, including what's preserved on this wiki, was way over the top and vitriolic.

Given that we're now living in an era where people have kind of calmed down about the series, should we clean up the page a bit?

There is plenty of TELLING and little SHOWING in these Don't Shoot the Message examples. Why did I bring this here I hear you ask, because thanks to this, the examples are nothing but whining about how these messages botched the landing but since they dont actually elaborate one what is wrong with these except with Weasel Words they... have a message that botched the landing Ironically enough.

  • |"The Path to the Pokémon League": It seems the episode wants the viewer to know that there are multiple ways to lovingly raise a Pokémon, with intense training just being one of many methods. Since it clearly works both in the anime and in the games and is a good metaphor for how grueling training for sports can be, it's certainly not a bad lesson in theory. But the execution was... lacking, to say the least.

  • Ojamajo Doremi: The main theme is that magic is never as important as interpersonal relationships, which is good, but the questionable evaluations of the actual consequences, the possible alternatives never raised, and the additional justifications made additional weird issues appear.

What are these questionable evaluations? What are these additional justifications?

[up] I feel those two can be cut for lacking context. They need to explain something as to why they didn't work.

From Film.Godzilla X Kong The New Empire:

  • Mood Whiplash: The death of their armed escort is handled...rather sloppily. The guy is too busy berating the three of them to listen to reason and is then promptly devoured by some kind of tree Titan. Trapper offhandedly mentions they're mourn him later, but they never do, and Bernie is the only one who reacts with horror and worry; Jiya and Illene just keep moving as if the gruesome death never even happened in the first place. The tone is rather jarring considering almost every other death in the film is given weight.

How do we rephrase this?

[up] I wonder if it should just be cut outright, since it seems more just annoyed at the outcome of a scene not being to their liking (similar to They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot) than a genuine shift in the scene's mood.

[up][up] I say cut it, it's trying to say the mood is inappropriate to what is happening, but Mood Whiplash is about the mood changing abruptly.

Bumping these. They're both unneseccarily spitful to subsequent entries (especially the former which comes off as a giant rant from a Classic Ben 10 purist, I just don't know where to start, or if the entry is salvageable at all:

    Same Character, But Different

  • Kevin in the original series of Ben 10 was an Enfant Terrible with extra terrible, being frighteningly murderous. In some ways he was more evil than even some season Big Bads: A Take Over the World type will kill you because you're in the way; Kevin will kill you just because he can. In Ben 10: Alien Force and Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, he's reintroduced as a criminal of the more "out to make a dishonest buck" type and quickly makes a Heel–Face Turn after falling in Love at First Sight (well, first sight in the new series) with Gwen. His powers have gone from energy absorption to the ability to transform into any material he touches. When his past was discussed, it was softened considerably - apparently, viewers were supposed to believe he'd always been the mostly harmless ne'er-do-well he'd been in the first ten minutes of Alien Force. It should tell you something when The Dreaded Big Bad Vilgax, once described as "Darth Vader without the sense of humor," turned out to actually care about his people and is a Universally Beloved Leader back home and it wasn't considered to be nearly the same level of derailment as Kevin's change. Some of his behavior can be attributed to the five-year Time Skip, but certain changes like his lack of sociopathy and rather abrupt Heel–Face Turn struck a sizable chunk of the fanbase as ham-fisted. It took until Ultimate Alien before any explanation was given for how Kevin became sane - it was still being demanded at that point because even after years of this new characterization, Saint Kevin was just too big a horse pill for fans to swallow. In all fairness the writers did have an explanation in mind they would have used in the third season of Alien Force, but thanks to Executive Meddling it was scrapped and they ended up having to incorporate it into the sequel series instead.
    • It's to the point that Ben and Gwen giving Kevin a chance needed every bit as much explaining away because it's just that unthinkable after what he'd been like. After a time travel episode that Original Series Ben wasn't supposed to remember once he'd returned to the past, Professor Paradox explained that he'd remember it very faintly, maybe just enough to consider the idea of Kevin becoming good when meeting him again. Omniverse took it farther, establishing that the gang had met the criminal-but-not-psychotic version of Kevin between the original series and AF/UA, though this serves as another Series Continuity Error on Omniverse's part since it was already established that Ben and Gwen hadn't seen Kevin since he was locked in the Null Void. Yes, it actually took years to make the new Kevin make sense, and more years to make Ben and Gwen entertaining the idea that Kevin could be in their midst and not kill them for fun make sense! That's how you know you've fallen into this trope big-time. note
Sliding Scale of Silliness vs Seriousness
  • Pierce Brosnan's Bond started out fairly seriously in GoldenEye, but did often retain some camp elements and comedic bits. However, his films got sillier and stupider as they went along. Unfortunately, it wasn't the like the sort of fun, goofy, warm, affectionate camp that came to embody the Roger Moore era. They did try to keep the serious tone from Golden Eye, despite the plots becoming more convoluted and ridiculous. Really, it was just plain bad writing, which often tried to awkwardly marry together silly plots with the insistence that it was all Serious Business.

Very minor one here, but at YMMV.The Lego Batman MovieAward Snub: It wasn't even nominated for an Academy Award, while The Boss Baby was (though at least it didn't win; Coco beat it to Best Animated Feature). It also failed to get an Annie nomination for best animated feature despite having better critical reception than most of the other nominees.

I do understand that the whole point of Award Snub is kinda complaining about good works not getting nominated for awards, but I think the bolded part is needlessly disparaging about The Boss Baby and should probably be cut.

[down] & [down][down]: I'll cut the reference to The Boss Baby.

[up][up] The first sentence should be reworded to remove the unnecessary complaint about The Boss Baby.

The film did not get an Academy Award nomination for best animated feature. It also failed to get an Annie nomination for best animated feature despite having better critical reception than most of the nominees.

Best Animated Feature is one of the only Oscar categories where a movie like The LEGO Batman Movie would be expected to be nominated. It's also the only category where The Boss Baby was nominated.

VideoGame.World Of Warplanes has these entries which seem to be complaining about the game's lack of popularity in comparison to other, similar games:

  • Cool Plane: THE GAME... supposedly. Thanks to competition from War Thunder though, this Wargaming title has been largely overshadowed.
  • The Un Favourite: Compared to World of Tanks and World of Warships, World of Warplanes is far less popular with War Thunder being the game of choice instead for players wanting to fly aircraft in online battles.

Found something on Fandom Heresy that feels... off. Didn't know where exactly I could take this so I'm posting it here.

  • Helluva Boss: You really want to tick off some HB fans in record time? Create/like any NSFW works featuring Octavia, Stolas' 17-year old daughter, for obvious reasons. Even 'questionable' artwork of her will have them clamoring to have you blocked and reported, and no amount of arguing 'it's just a 2d drawing' or 'it's fictional' will dissuade them.
    • On a lesser but still infuriating note, attempting to do any problematic ships will also cause outrage.

Like it starts off fine, but the last bit about "it's just a drawing/fictional" has a bias that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The Natter especially feels biased. Also this doesn't really feel fandom specific? Like Fandom Heresy is usually for stuff like "liking this widely hated installment is considered sacrilegious". Outrage over sexualizing minors and "problematic" ships is something that happens in every fandom.
Speaking of, does Fandom Heresy even need examples? Idk it's just most of the examples are "if you like (hated installment), then (main character) will personally kick your ass" or something, and aside from that weirdly immature writing, it just feels like it's either for complaining about works/poorly received changes, or complaining about fandoms. I don't really see anything constructive coming from this, and it might need to be taken to TRS and made definition-only, but that's something for a Trope Talk thread.

Sandbox help wanted.
