Which namespace does this work belong in?

Go To

This is the sticky thread for questions related to the namespacing of works. As in, "which is the right namespace for this work?"

Ideally, questions already answered are covered on the Namespace Map. If you know a namespacing issue has already been resolved, but it is not yet documented on the Map, please update the Map.

If you want to suggest a new namespace, don't post here, but in Suggesting New Namespaces instead.

    Original OP:
I busy myself with moving works off of Main/ and I've encountered a number of cases where I can't decide to which namespace something should go. Some of these questions may have been asked before, but there seems to be no general reference point for namespace issues. Maybe this could become a sticky thread for all media-namespace related questions?

For easier reference, I've numbered my questions:

  • #1: Where do animated films go? They seem to be distributed rather inconsistenly over Film/ (Puss In Boots, Whats Opera Doc), WesternAnimation/ (Disneys Anne Frank, Snow White), Anime/ (Princess Mononoke) and Disney/ (Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, Der Fuehrers Face).
  • #2: There are a few songs which have their own pages ("Pirate Jenny"). Where do they go – to Music/ or to Literature/ ?
  • #3: Where do composers go – to Music/ , or are they to be treated like other creators, which hitherto stay on Main/ ?
  • #4: Where do Talk Shows, Game Shows and News Broadcasts go? I guess you could call these formats Live-Action TV but they're not really "TV series", as in Series/.
  • #5: Am I right in assuming that Puppet Shows go to Series/ ?
  • #6: What about “hybrid shows”, i.e. segment shows that incorporate both live action and animation? (e.g. Die Sendung Mit Der Maus)
  • #7: Where to put picture books? I am thinking of books like Der Struwwelpeter and Max and Moritz — books that are really not complete without their illustrations. They are not (yet) ComicBook/s, but to sort them under Literature/ feels a little unsatisfactory too.
  • #8: The rule is to put works into the namespace of their original medium. However, once in a while there is a work which is little known in its original medium, and almost exclusively known by its adaptation. I’m thinking of Das Boot, for example: there's a novel, but it is almost exclusively known by the Petersen movie.
  • #9: Should One Book Authors who are invariably tied to a single work be treated as a creator or a work page rather?— Currently, we have Samuel Pepys and Herodotus, but shouldn't these pages be at Literature/The Diary of Samuel Pepys and Literature/The Histories rather?
  • #10: There are cases where I’m unsure whether to use the English or the original title. Is there are hard rule that determines whether Der Ring Des Nibelungen goes to Theatre/Der Ring des Nibelungen or Theatre/The Ring of the Nibelung? Even Wikipedia uses the original title.

I'd be grateful for input.

I'm fine with the crowner for Bollywood, though I find it hard to believe it could end in any other way than "scrap the namespace".

Also, found this page: Main.TV Tropes As A Gateway Drug

Should it not be in the Just for Fun namespace? It's most certainly not a trope.

What's the rule for an example from a spinoff that's a different medium?

To be specific, anything Homestar Runner would normally be under Web Animation, but the example I wanted to use is from their Puppet spinoff, which uses real puppets filmed instead of Flash animation. Would I still put the example under Web Animation? Puppet Shows? Web Original?

Don't take life too seriously. It's only a temporary situation.

I'd say to put the example into a Puppet Show folder (make one if needed), then wick the live-action film (if it is a Red Link, then also link the original medium page). If there is a multimedia franchise page, then wick that as well and ignore the parenthetical.

Here's the crowner for the Bollywood namespace. We've discussed doing away with it in this thread, and we've agreed that a crowner will help finalize it.

That'd be enough to cut if that were an Image Pickin' crowner, but I'm not used to crowners outside of Image Pickin.

We technically have enough to call it now if we wanted to, but just like with Disney/ we really shouldn't be calling something like this after just a few days.

We have consensus to remove the Bollywood/ namespace. Make it so!

Also, unhooked the crowner.

I previously posted the same question at ATT and get no replies. I suppose this is the correct place to ask?

This is an issue that has been raised several times over many years and involved works that I edited heavily (for example, Daily Lives of High School Boys and Kotoura-san), that is, how to handle manga that started online.

I know we have a consensus that an online preview, by itself, does not change the work's namespace, which is why the two works named above are still in the Manga/ namespace, because from day one they are intended to be published on paper, but released online-first.

What I am confused are works like I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying and I Think Our Son Is Gay. They were originally serialized on Pixiv (and in the latter case, Twitter as well). However, they are collected and published on paper eventually. Should they be Manga-namespaced, or they should—following the precedent of Hetalia: Axis Powers—be put into Webcomic/ ? Or even in Web Original/ like Getsuyoubi No Tawawa? (I'm more inclined to think Webcomic/).

A third case is even more complicated. Wasteful Days of High School Girls was originally published as webcomic (on Nico Nico Douga), but eventually no longer published that way; most of the series is published in anthologies like traditional manga. Where should it be namespaced? (I'm more inclined to think Manga/).

How do you name a film, when a completely different film has the same name? Can someone point me to the Admin article? Two films are named City Of Joy. I'd like to add parenthesis so City of Joy (1992) looks like City of Joy (1992).

[up][up][up] - I think it's Original Medium. Because I did that for Podcast.Death By Cliche by old ATT advice:

Board Games shouldn't be a folder, right? Where do we talk about Media Categories?

Because I know that Unwinnable by Mistake has both Board Games and Tabletop Games.

I came across FanFic.Hidden Frontier, and although the linked website is gone, there's a YouTube channel with the videos. I would just move the page and update the wicks, but there's a few different choices here, so I wanted to get some consensus first. Fanfic/ is wrong, as it isn't a written work. Series/ is tempting, but it was never broadcast as a streaming service or cable network. Film/ and WebVideo/ would work, I think.

I've brought this up before, but I think Creator.Ryan George should be in WebVideo/. All of his known popular work is web video work, and he's only known for one other project while the Creator page tropes the sketches on his Youtube channel.

I thought WebVideo/ was supposed to be for the videos themselves? So WebVideo/RyanGeorge would be a web video or web video series titled "Ryan George".

[up] It can also be for channels without a specific name whose videos are exclusively online, such as with WebVideo.Drew Gooden, as the name of his Vine account / Youtube channel is also his name and he doesn't really do anything outside of Web Video.

Idk. I've always been unsure too, but the pages I've made for Danny Gonzalez, Drew Gooden, Kurtis Conner and Jarvis Johnson are all under "Web Video" because their content is all YT or Vine based.

So WebVideo/RyanGeorge would be a web video or web video series titled "Ryan George".
That's exactly what is getting troped; a YouTube channel called "Ryan George". The possibility that the creator has the same name as the channel is largely irrelevant. smile

[up][up] Wouldn't a channel go under Creator? Like Networks? Or does "channel" refer to "the body of work found on this channel"?

Science Thor is a Creator. He used to be the host for the Because Science channel, a sub-channel of Nerdist. He is now the host for the Kyle Hill channel. A channel is the platform from which they host videos. Bigger channels get sub-channels, which can be seen as spin-offs.

The channel is not a Creator/ because it doesn't have a separate identity from its broadcast. The various Networks have legal existence to hire employees and pay for guests or rent studios. A YouTube channel doesn't require all of that. Whatever LLC that Science Thor created to handle income from his patreon and pay Kevin would also be considered a Creator/, similar to Syfy. But a series like Stargate SG-1 wouldn't be a Creator/, even if it was the only show/franchise on SyFy.

A Youtube channel can be a network, such as Channel Awesome, but that's usually because they do not produce videos as themselves, and simply serve as a host for several other Youtube series.

Is Machinima.Supermarioglitchy 4 in the right namespace? Or should it be in Creator/? I'm not familiar with WebVideos/machinima/any of that stuff at all, but the page doesn't seem to be troping any of the creator's(?)/channel's(?) content at all, just listing the different series they've created.

If it should be in Creator/, does the current page just get cut despite the 1,600 inbounds?
