Removing Gushing from the Wiki

Go To

So. Personal opinions on the main wiki aren't allowed, be they gushing or bashing. Now, bashing gets tolerated even less than gushing, and that makes sense; it leads to more flamewars.

But that doesn't mean we have to live with all the gushing either. This thread can serve as a center for keeping it in check. One function might be to alert people to pages that are really heavy in gushing, to the point that it's not just a quick fix and will need some assistance.

YMMV.Metroid Samus Returns

  • And You Thought It Would Fail: The developer Mercury Steam, who previously worked on the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow series, the company's morale and reception was mixed to low. Nintendo bringing them on board for Metroid 2's remake was treated with skepticism at first. Upon the release of Samus Returns, reviews were good, the morale within the company was great, and the company was given praise from Nintendo to the point of working on the sequel to Metroid Fusion, Metroid Dread.

Something about this entry bothers me. It just seems like this entry is trying to characterize the developer as having this epic comeback after a low in their history. I'm not even sure if the morale part and Nintendo expressing liking the developer is true.

Brought this here because I'm not sure where else to bring it to.

[up]I'll be honest, though I'm not part of the Metroid fanbase, I question how many of them had their attention raised by the developer's history. After all, Balan Wonderworld being developed in cooperation with Arzest didn't get that much notice until after the release demo that showed just how lacking the game was.

Why do we even have Win Back the Crowd? Honestly, I don't believe in the concept of fans dramatically leaving a series and then coming back because the showrunners decided to pander to them. It isn't that flagrant in real life. Most people don't loudly complain and gush every time a show does something. With that, it also brings about pointless gushing and backhanded complaining.

I think it's significant when a work dips in critical and audience reception, but then a new work in the franchise gains massive appeal (not always because of "pandering") and puts it back in the public's good graces again. Sometimes it's a negligible change, but it can be quite significant.

I always wondered if reactions like Author's Saving Throw, And You Thought It Would Fail, and Win Back the Crowd should be put in the Sugar Wiki.

[up] Author's Saving Throw is theoretically neutral, it only requires an attempt to fix something, but it doesn't need to succeed.

People have butted heads before about whether AST counts if it succeeds; might require a Trope Talk thread if not TRS.

I thought Author's Saving Throw was for successful cases? If it is only supposed to be used for unsuccessful ones, we must have a lot of misuse.

No it's for any kind of attempt, as the audience reaction it's recording are the responses that led to it happening in the first place.

Author's Saving Throw came up a while ago in the complaining thread, and the mods approved me putting it in Tropes Needing TRS (Fighteer in particular did not seem to like the trope one bit) so it definitely could get TRS.

I wonder if it would work better as a trivia trope that required word of God to confirm. That at least means it would have confirmation rather then shooting in the dark of it being a possible like it is currently.

This is from the Dirty Harriet page:

  • In X-Men: First Class, in order to infiltrate a Hellfire Club private party, Moira MacTaggert strips down to her undergarments and pretends to be one of the call-girls. Done fairly well as it's shown that she's not all that comfortable with it and is acutely aware of how vulnerable she is.

Do any of these examples in YMMV.Super Smash Bros Ultimate seem gushy?

  • Moe:
    • Zelda's A Link to the Past/A Link Between Worlds redesign in Ultimate makes her looks really expressive and adorable. Many are saying that this is their favorite design of Zelda now.
    • Isabelle, just as in her home series, is adorable and her reveal trailer exploits it for all it's worth. Sakurai himself essentially made sure her animations would be as cute as possible.
    • The female Pokémon Trainer is considered one of the cutest characters in the game. Her voice and in-battle animations make her come across as more innocent and cheery than her male counterpart, and her interactions with her Pokémon (two of which are Badass Adorable in their own right) are even cuter, especially in her victory poses. Many players find her to be lovable in her own right especially given that neither Trainer can be controlled directly except on the World of Light map.
    • For Assist Trophy characters: Nikki from Swapnote could hold a candle to Isabelle. Many fans are quite glad that they can't hurt her.
    • Pyra and Mythra! While Pyra is more confident and competitive here she's just as lovable and endearing as ever, and Mythra is... well, Mythra, but her cockiness, sassiness and cuteness all manage to shine through in Smash.

The last line of the Zelda one should be cut. Isabelle sounds fine (maybe remove the italics?). Pokémon Trainer sounds weird (I've never saw anyone saying that she's the cutest character, they mostly focus on Zelda). Nikki and Pyra/Mythra are the only one that sound really gushy to me.

Number one fan of characters that appear only once and ultimately were a recurring character either in disguise or trying a new image.

YMMV.Metroid Dread

  • Win The Crowd
    • To say a lot of fans are excited for this game is an understatement. The reveal of Dread has been met with near-universal acclaim and hype, and considering the enormous Sequel Gap between this and Fusion, Dread had some big shoes to fill, particularly after the production restart of the much-desired Metroid Prime 4 hugely delayed the release of the only other game in the franchise announced. Thankfully, all the previews indicate it's doing so with ease, and the October release date means fans don't have to wait long before they can play it.
    • In a way, the situation with Metroid Dread is the complete polar opposite of Metroid Prime: Federation Force. While both games were revealed in the middle of a drought of new Metroid games (Federation Force 5 years after Metroid: Other M and Dread 4 years after Metroid: Samus Returns), Federation Force was a spin-off with an unorthodox visual style and multiplayer focus (everything fans did not want back then) releasing at the absolute worst possible time. By contrast, Dread was revealed to be the much anticipated sequel to Metroid Fusion that fans have been waiting 19 years for, and once again marks a return to the traditional 2D exploration focused gameplay fans want out of the series.

Honestly, I'm not really sure what Win The Crowd exactly is. I'm not sure if a reveal can count for this. Also, the second example is natter and just exists as a potshot to Federation Force.

I'm not sure where else to put this, but part of the description in The Women Are Safe with Us is pretty defensive of this trope, asserting that it's a "good" trope.

This trope is not going anywhere. There's no shame in audiences demanding minimal standards of conduct from characters courting their support, and writers are wise to remember this. Having pirates that act like pirates, or Vikings that act like Vikings would alienate the audience, which is something to be avoided with far more care than historical inaccuracy. Even history buffs that sneer at inaccurate diet or clothing styles may cringe.

That paragraph pre-dates the article history. I'd assume that it comes from the days when Tropes = Cliches = Bad Things, and so people got overly defensive of certain tropes as a result.

  • The "Unlimited Blade Works" route of Fate/stay night includes a refreshingly mild example of this. Shirou is socially awkward and something of a Deadpan Snarker and Rin is a grade-A tsundere. It never degrades into actual violence, and very rarely more than grousing (this applies to both individuals for differing reasons, and both resort to grousing more to hide their embarrassment than anything). Also refreshing is that this does not define their relationship; it only tends to occur when either party gets flustered due to praise, teasing or (in Rin's case) having the subject of their feelings brought up. Outside of these events, they're able to maintain an effective partnership that is more affected by the difference in their methods and worldview than their attraction.

This entry in BelligerentSexualTension.Other Media gushes as well as bashes other examples.
