YMMV / Isekai Quartet

Go To

  • Awesome Moments:
    • Seeing Aqua, Memetic Loser extraordinaire, causing actual harm to Ainz and scaring him as a result was pure bliss.
    • In the Season 1 climax, Ainz, Kazuma, Subaru and Tanya working together to defeat the Destroyer.
      • During the fight with the Destroyer, after a great Badass Boast, Subaru puts himself at risk when he tosses Tanya and Kazuma out of the way of the Destroyer, encouraging them as he falls, while Emilia can't help but worry. Rem, however, who has seen Subaru take down the White Whale, offers reassurance that Subaru will be just fine. He then weaponizes Return by Death again to use Ainz's Undeath Armynote  to protect the others from the Destroyer's beam attack.
    • Season 2's climax, where Albedo, Aqua, Emilia, Puck, Filo, Raphtalia, and Visha manage to defeat the reborn Destroyer. Special moments are Emilia freezing the Destroyer, Albedo punching one of the legs off and saving Aqua by stopping two missiles, Raphtalia single-handedly stopping a laser that was giving problems to the combined efforts of Albedo and Visha, and finally Aqua disintegrating the Destroyer with God Blow.
  • Awesome Music:
    • The opening, "Isekai Quartet", which is sung by the four main protagonists themselves!
    • The Season 2 opening, "Isekai Showtime", has proven to be just as good to listen to.
    • The ending, "Girl Talk", is just as good, if not better, and also sung by the four female leads (with Tanya pulling double duty here).
    • The secondary main female characters show that they aren't slouches when it comes to singing in the Season 2 ending, "Ponkotsu! Isekai Theater".
    • Episode 5 has has a special ending song by Nonoc, whose best known in this instance for her work in Re:Zero, called "Hollow Veil", which is hauntingly beautiful.
    • The movie Another World gives us Melodic Road Movie sung by Konomi Suzuki, a Re:Zero regular with Kashitaro Ito.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: As amusing as their cameo is, Seiya and Ristarte's appearance in Season 2 Episode 11 not only comes out of nowhere, but affects nothing in the slightest. They arrive at the school festival before Seiya decides to leave since he's not Crazy-Prepared enough to go inside while Ristarte grabs his leg in protest. They don't even interact with any of the other characters.
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • Overlord watchers who got sick of Ainz never taking any damage from any enemy and always curbstomping his foes will find plenty of satisfaction seeing Aqua, who might be a fool but is still a goddess, actually harming him with what he stated was a low-level spell. In general, Isekai Quartet shows the Overlord cast actually struggling with several things besides battles, and they are not invincible villains anymore, which is actually cathartic for those who in general got tired of them smashing everything and everyone on their way.
    • Konosuba watchers who got sick of Kazuma's selfish actions and usual lack of empathy, will get a kick out of his loudmouthed Jerkassery and refusal to do anything to help the class in the upcoming sports festival causing Tanya to gleefully subject him to Training from Hell. Also, Aqua being a genuine threat to Ainz of all characters is enjoyable for anyone who thinks her skills as a goddess are wasted due to her canonical stupidity.
    • Tanya the Evil watchers on the other hand get a different sort of catharsis from this series, Tanya taking a level in kindness through her Odd Friendship with Ainz and Subaru lessens the Too Bleak, Stopped Caring tone from her home series.
    • Finally, fans of Re:Zero are happy to see Subaru not go through the same humiliation, torment, and torture that he's subjected to in his canon series, with Ram's constant insults and a few mild embarrassments being the worst he gets so far. Though other fans do wanna see Return by Death active for shits and giggles.
    • And just to add the new kids on the block, fans of Rising of the Shield Hero will be glad to see Naofumi and his friends be treated well compared to the hell they had to endure in their series.
  • Continuity Lock-Out: Alot of the Call Backs and Running Gags can easily fly over the head of newcomers since fully appreciating this series would require one to be caught up to all seasons of all five shows in this crossover. To be exact: three seasons for Overlord, two seasons for Konosuba, and one season for Saga of Tanya the Evil, Re:Zero, and The Rising Of The Shield Hero.
    • As of Isekai Quartet Movie: Another World, this includes the second season of Re:Zero as the movie includes Otto and Garfiel (with the latter calling Subaru "boss") in a post-credits scene. It even includes lore from the web and light novels with Alec Hoshin being a lore important Re:Zero character, Hoshin of the Wastes. that will definitely fly over anime-only watchers' heads.
  • Epileptic Trees:
    • Fans wondered whether or not Funimation would recruit the original English voice actors/actresses from Re:Zero and KonoSuba to reprise their roles. This was confirmed based on this link.
    • There's alot of theories circling around about the potential relationship Aqua and Being X could have, specifically the latter being the one who replaced the former after she got dragged into the mortal realm by Kazuma. It would fit the presented characterization of Being X as overworked - specifically, Being X being the overworked new guy that Tanya meets during her death in her first life as a salaryman. It could also be that Aqua wants to defeat the Demon King and thus get her old job back because she has somehow been informed that Being X is someone she knows and that he is making a hash of it. She just can't say anything about it because whatever prevents people on her world from recognizing her as a goddess also prevents her from mentioning it.
    • One of the theories that has been going around on message boards is that Subaru has actually died several times in the series so far and reincarnated every time, with the other characters and the audience being completely unaware of it. Episode 6 at least seems to suggest that he may have died at least once to help Emilia become Class President, given how he said he was going to help and how smug he looked after she won. This theory is put into bed in episode 10, where it is confirmed that Subaru never died at all and that episode is actually the first time Return By Death is used in the series.
    • With the announcement of a Season 2 and Roswaal introducing transfer students at the last episode of season 1, there has been alot of discussions on what other isekai series can involved in this story, with the characters from The Rising of the Shield Hero and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime being among the top requested to be included for the next season. Ultimately, as it would turn out, The Rising of the Shield Hero turned out to be an accurate guess, as Naofumi, Raphtalia and Filo have been confirmed to be appearing in season 2. However, this slightly ended up as being a Bait-and-Switch. The Shield Hero cast were indeed in the show (and they're in a different homeroom from the main one), but they weren't the "transfer students" at the end. It was actually Chomosuke.
  • Genius Bonus:
    • Why does a spell from Aqua only harm Ainz but knocks out Shaltear? Because as mentioned in the series Ainz has a higher level of Magic Defense than her.
    • When Ainz uses Time Stop, Aqua, Tanya, and Subaru are unaffected. The reason for each is actually explained in their own series:
      • Aqua being a goddess gives her higher immunity over magic.
      • Tanya regularly speaks with Being X, who stops time when they interact.
      • Subaru's Return from Death is affected by time.
  • I Knew It!: As soon as it was confirmed Season 2 would include more series, everyone instantly guessed The Rising of the Shield Hero would be joining due to popularity and timing. Sure enough, this was confirmed to be the case in October 2019.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: One of the most frequent complaints levied against this series is that the episodes are only ten minutes long (including the Opening and Ending, making the episode less than 8 minutes), with only one episode released weekly. The fact that this series has a massive cast doesn't help either.
  • Just Here for Godzilla:
    • Many come to this show just to see the main casts of four different shows interact since nothing like this has ever been done in anime until now.
    • Many fans who only follow one or two of the featured shows watch this just to get more of their favorite characters while they wait for new seasons to come out.
  • Memetic Mutation:
  • Signature Scene:
    • Aqua. Hurting. Ainz.
    • Tanya entering Unstoppable Rage in episode 9.
    • For Season 2, Aqua, Tanya, and Subaru moving freely in Ainz's Time Stop.
    • The Mobile Fortress Destroyer reactivating in the episode 8 teaser.
  • Shocking Moments:
    • The very existence of this series, as a crossover such as this has never been done in anime's long history until now.
    • Aqua actually hurting Lord Ainz, of all people.
    • When Tanya's Battle Aura flares in response to her anger, not only is it strong enough to cause an earthquake, but it is revealed that her level of magic is BEYOND the eighth-tier of YGGDRASIL's system without needing to resort to praying to Being X.
    • The Final Boss of the first season being the Mobile Fortress Destroyer.
    • In Season 2, Aqua, Tanya, and Subaru manage to No-Sell Ainz's Time Stop which is an 10th tier level of magic.
    • This shot from the season two finale of Rem and Ram kissing.
    • Re:Zero Web Novel/Light Novel Spoilers: The inclusion and reveal of Alec Hoshin/Hoshin of the Wastes was this for web novel and light novel readers and even sent the Re:Zero subreddit into a frenzy. Since he's a character that's only alluded to the anime and has only been mentioned as part of the novel's worldbuilding and backstory.
  • Tearjerker: The ending credits for the movie Another World shows the professor from Konosuba portaling to the world the movie is set on. It shows him meeting another traveler (Kikotenshin Nekonyan, one of the Six Gods of the Overlord series) and the two of them making Pantagruel and the other golems of the world. It then shows the professor continuing his travels while the knight stays with her. The next panel shows his grave and Pantagruel morning him before trying to move on, the only sentient in the world.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • The news that Naofumi and the rest of the Shield Hero cast are reserved as side characters and will likely not interact with the main cast too much is a disappointment to fans. While it does make sense Naofumi would be cautious around new and unfamiliar people given how the last time he blindly trusted someone bit him in the ass, it raises the question why the cast was brought in the first place.
    • Likewise, the appearance of Seiya and Ristarte had a similar reaction, though it was somewhat more understandable due to how being overly cautious is the main character trait of Seiya.
  • Ugly Cute: Ainz. Despite being a skeleton, his design and polite demeanor can't help but make him endearing.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • While the other three coming together makes (somewhat) sense, the main cast of The Saga of Tanya the Evil being here most definitely counts since that show is far more grounded in its setting than the other three shows.
    • It is safe to say that everyone was caught off-guard with the reappearance of the previously thought to be self-destructed Mobile Fortress Destroyer at the end of the Season 1.
    • The opening for Season 2 gave us a surprise by showing the Ruffian from Konosuba to be part of the cast. Yes, not a more notable side-character like Kyouya or Dust and his group, but the recurring background-character who doesn't even have a name.
    • Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti shows up for the Valentine's episode to freak out Re:Zero fans. Given he's dead in his home series and his status as an Ax-Crazy, Nightmare Fuel-Inducing, Knight of Cerebus compared to the Lighter and Softer setting, he was definitely unexpected. His appearance is even unexpected in-show, with Sebas noting he's not supposed to be there at all. What's even better is that after his debut, he now appears in the intro for all subsequent episodes.
    • Seiya and Ristarte make a cameo in Season 2 Episode 11.
    • Re:Zero Web Novel/Light Novel Spoilers: Alec Hoshin/Hoshin of the Wastes was this for many web novel and light novel readers. No one expected a character that's only alluded to the anime and has only appeared in the novel as part of its worldbuilding and backstory to appear in a goofy non-canon anime.
  • The Woobie: As funny as it is, the fact that Yunyun is always seen alone in just about every scene she appears is a bit of an awkward reminder of how lonely she is.
