"Turning Blythe into a demanding diva is the best idea we've ever had!"

Written by Merriwether Williams

Blythe folds origami versions of all of the Littlest Pet Shop pets, but before she can properly chat with the pets about her paper creations, she rushes off to try to get to the fashion show sponsored by Wake Up, People! She gets there on time, but before Ginny, the host, can get to Blythe, the Biskit Twins shove Blythe out of their way to get Ginny's attention, causing Blythe to crash into a tree and to drop her phone, and a nest lands on her head. Brittany proceeds to smash Blythe's phone by stomping on it. The twins fail to get Ginny's admiration as they had planned, and Ginny instead takes a liking to Blythe and her hat. Fashion celebrity Yadon'say gives an approving thumbs-up, causing women around Downtown City to gather twigs and make nests on their heads.

When Blythe returns to The Littlest Pet Shop, she finds Mrs. Twombly has put a birdcage on her head. She tries her best to walk by with a straight face and heads to the day camp room, where Minka and Pepper want to see the nest hat closer. As Blythe puts it down, however, she discovers an egg in the nest. She entrusts the eggs to the pets as she puts the nest back on her head and scrambles out to look for the egg's parents.

As she heads out the door, she runs into the Biskit Twins again. This time, they're here to tell Blythe that their father Fisher has ordered them to pay back Blythe's phone with their own money. Having borrowed money from Fisher their whole lives, they ask Blythe for advice on making money. When they notice Blythe is constantly receiving letters and phone calls asking about the nest hat, they decide to act as Blythe's PR agents, but Blythe will have none of it. They drag Blythe into the Biskit limousine and give her a busy tour among Downtown City's upscale areas, where the nest hats prove to be even greater successes, and despite the Biskit Twins' attempts to hog the spotlight, Blythe climbs to higher heights of popularity, still unable to go searching around for the egg's parents.

Back at The Littlest Pet Shop, Russell has the pets take turns sitting on the egg—Vinnie excluded as he is cold-blooded. The egg eventually hatches during Russell's turn, and the baby bird inside declares Russell his mama. Russell names the bird Hubble and attempts to teach him how to fly but trips over a pillow. Hubble repeats Russell's movements precisely and hurts himself tripping on the pillow, causing him to cry.

The Biskit Twins trap Blythe inside a waiting room at a TV studio. When Blythe asks why they're going through so much trouble, Whittany points out that it's no longer about the money, but them wanting credit for nest hats. They restrain Blythe to a chair using the scarves she wore earlier so she can't escape as the twins repeatedly ask for luxuries—including a replacement for Blythe's phone, which they withhold from her to milk Blythe's fame further. Eventually, Blythe gets so mad that she breaks the chair and sneaks past the twins with a fake-out. Whittany and Brittany give chase but are tremendously slowed down through picking up their things. The twins crash into Blythe's P.A. and fall to the floor, along with their swag.

Russell notices Hubble is hungry and tries to feed him the pet food he normally eats. Sunil stops him, having found a bird care book. After learning about regurgitation feeding, Russell vehemently protests against doing that, so Penny and Minka find a birdseed bell. Russell attempts to feed him the birdseed, but Hubble refuses.

Blythe emerges outside to see birds chasing down people wearing nest hats. Blythe quickly puts her nest into her bag, finds her replacement phone, records a video of the panic in the park, and uploads it. Sure enough, the video rapidly goes viral and convinces people everywhere to get rid of their nest hats. With no one wearing them anymore, the birds gather around the nest hats and use them as actual nests. Blythe meets with Russell and Hubble and puts Blythe's nest back where she found it. Eventually, Hubble's mother comes by and the two fly off together. Russell makes the mistake of sitting on Blythe's head though, thus kicking off the hedgehog hat craze.

This episode contains examples of (YMMV entries go here):

  • Anime Hair: One spectator of the fashion show at the beginning is wearing a Marie Antoinette wig. It's apparently too big for the wearer to keep her balance.
  • Artistic License – Biology / Rule of Cute: Hubble hatches completely dry and fully feathered.
  • Bench Breaker: Blythe overcomes being tied up to a chair by struggling so much that she dismantles the chair on the ground.
  • Bland-Name Product: Wake Up, People! is the Littlest Pet Shop's counterpart to Good Morning America or Good Day, LA.
  • Bound and Gagged: The Biskit Twins tie Blythe to a chair after repeated attempts to escape.
  • Call-Back: Blythe seems to have overcome her fear of the camera that she exhibited in "So You Skink You Can Dance" and "Terriers & Tiaras."
  • Captain Oblivious: Ginny, regarding Blythe's "hat." Blythe tries to make it as clear as she can that it's just a nest that fell on her head, to no avail.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Blythe's phone.
  • Continuity Nod: Yadon'say has appeared in some crowd and outdoor shots in previous episodes as a generic extra.
  • Conspicuous Consumption: Whittany and Brittany seem to describe to Ginny their approach to fashion as this. Ginny dislikes this approach.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Whittany and Brittany were actually shocked that Fisher didn't find their intentionally breaking Blythe's phone as funny as they did.
  • Follow the Leader: In-universe. Blythe's nest hat on TV causes a storm of mimics.
  • Forced Meme: In-universe. Blythe resolves the nest hats crisis in Act 3 by uploading a video of people getting chased by birds—as intended, it goes viral and discourages people from wearing them.
  • Foreshadowing: Zoe shows off putting strange things on her head in the Cold Open, which is what the episode eventually becomes about.
  • Funny Background Event: Minka doesn't seem quite as pleased with Blythe's origami as the other pets. Presumably, as an artist, she has pickier tastes in arts and crafts.
    • When Blythe and Ginny talk about the nest hat, Whittany and Brittany look less than pleased and keep making aside glances to each other.
  • The Hilarity of Hats: The nest hats. Also, after the Biskit Twins are booed off the catwalk, they create customized plastic-looking glowing hats—Whittany's is magenta, and Brittany's is neon green.
  • Lampshade Hanging: When Vinnie questions Blythe leaving the egg for the pets, Pepper points out that it makes as much sense as wearing a nest on one's head.
  • Misplaced Wildlife: During the bird rampage, an ostrich is seen running out of a pond. Wild ostriches only live in Africa and the show is confirmed to take place in the United States.
  • The Movie: In-universe. Nest hats become so popular that someone released Nest Hat: The Movie.
  • Musical Episode: Averted. "The Nest Hats Craze!" ends a six-episode streak of consecutive musical episodes.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Blythe apparently gets Martha Stewart into nest hats.
  • Non Sequitur: A panicked woman leaps into a pond—only to see an ostrich coming out of it.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: With the Biskit Twins again, of course.
  • Parents for a Day: Russell takes this one, but it doesn't take long for Blythe to come help.
  • Punny Name: Yadon'say.
  • The Quiet One: Yadon'say does not say a word at all in this episode.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Fisher Biskit. His daughters come boast to him about them smashing Blythe's phone, and he demands they pay it back using their own money.
  • Shout-Out: Blythe constructs a top-hat shaped nest for Uncle Pennybags.
    • The madness in the park in Act 3 looks like something out of The Birds.
  • Stealth Pun: Downtown City's elite falls victim to some Angry Birds.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Blythe sticks with the nest on her head as a hat when Yadon'say approves of it. She soon wants out of it once the Biskit Twins get involved, however.
  • Tempting Fate: Sunil warns Russell not to read how birds feed their chicks because he'll recoil and say, "Eeew, that's so gross!" Sunil hands Russell the book and Russell reads it, only to exclaim that verbatim.
  • Too Dumb to Live: The Biskit twins deliberately smash Blythe's cell phone and then brag about it to their father, and are shocked that he punished them for it.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: How does the food goes from mama bird's mouth to the baby bird? The world might never know.
  • Zany Scheme: The Biskit Twins bring Blythe to new levels of stardom so they can get free stuff.
