Recap / Fairy May Cry, 26 "Hunting in Edolas"

Go To

Now having a better understanding of the threat Nelo Angelo and Edolas' royal army pose, Earthland's Fairy Tail sets out to the royal capital to rescue their friends, with some aid from Lucy Ashley and Lisanna. Meanwhile, in another part of Edolas, Trish and Gajeel begin their own search.

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Lucy Ashley finds her counterpart being a (former) rich girl who uses Celestial Spirit Keys and is writing a novel hilarious. Lisanna admits the contrast is rather amusing.
  • Adaptational Karma: Downplayed, but Dante continues to enjoy messing with Lucy Ashley.
  • Amphibian Assault: A creature that is a hybrid of a frog and a newt attacks the Earthland Fairy Tail members before Lucy Ashley drives it off.
  • Animal Motifs: Dante compares King Faust to a vulture, an assessment Natsu agrees with.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Most of the Edolas military Captains are this, scoffing at the idea that anyone could pose a threat to them.
  • Ascended Extra: Lisanna joins Lucy Ashley in helping Earthlands Fairy Tail members rather than staying behind.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The shop owner gives Wendy her air cannon for free on account of all that Earthland Fairy Tail has done for him.
  • Big Bad: Mundus, being behind Nelo Angelo's presence and having his first onscreen appearance in the story.
  • Blood Knight:
    • As per usual, Dante and Natsu, being disappointed Lucy Ashley scared off the monster attacking them.
    • They later enjoy a chance to smack around several Edolas royal soldiers.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Even without their respective powers, Dante, Modeus and Natsu easily mow down several royal guards to Lucy and Lisanna's shock.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Natsu reminds the others that they've already met Dante's opposite, bringing up memories of the Vergil arc.
    • Dante making fun of the idea of Lucy Ashley being scary has him compare her to a three-headed ice dog and a giant spider made of lava, referring to his defeat of Cerberus and Fairy Tail's encounter with Phantom respectively.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: Modeus covers Wendy's to prevent her from seeing the bloodshed of Dante killing the royal guards.
  • Determinator: Earthland Fairy Tail refuses to back down from saving their friends even after being told about the King's army and Nelo Angelo.
  • Didn't See That Coming: The group is surprised to see their version of Lucy show up in the middle of a city, and even more shocked that she apparently still has her magic!
  • Dragon with an Agenda: Turns out, Nelo Angelo is a creation of Mundus and working with Faust to deliver Edolas to his true master.
  • The Dreaded:
    • Nelo Angelo, with people on both sides of the conflict admitting to not liking him.
    • The mention of Vergil is enough to make the members of Fairy Tail deathly serious.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Lucy Ashley is displeased at several members of Earthland Fairy Tail calling her "Scary Lucy". She's even less amused by Dante dubbing her "Crazy Lucy".
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Carla realises that Nelo Angelo being a demon likely means Mundus is making an attempt at conquering Edolas.
  • Evil Counterpart:
    • Erza Knightwalker is this to her Earthland counterpart, being known as the Fairy Hunter to her counterpart Fairy Queen.
    • Mundus created Nelo Angelo out of the combined essence of Dante, Vergil, and Sparda to serve as his loyal minion.
    • When the Earthland members of Fairy Tail are discussing Dante's opposite in Edolas, Natsu points out that Vergil already fits the bill.
  • Eyes Never Lie: How Dante and Modeus realize that Nelo Angelo is a demon.
  • Foreshadowing
    • Edolas Fairy Tail's surprise at Natsu's Hot-Blooded enthusiasm sets up his counterpart being a pushover.
    • Dante informs the others that Lady changed her name from Mary due to issues with her father, which comes up in the next arc.
  • Hero Killer: Nelo Angelo has apparently killed many guilds in Edolas before, and even slaid Edolas Fairy Tail's previous master.
  • Indy Ploy: Fairy Tail's "plan" boils down to: go to the capital, kick the king and army's ass, and rescue their friends. Work out the details as they go.
  • Instant Expert: Averted with Wendy, admits that she is unable to use Cerberus well. Promptly demonstrated by knocking herself in the head.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Carla admonishes Wendy for choosing a weapon on the basis that "it looks cute".
    • Lucy Ashley scolds Dante and the others for killing several guards and putting a target on their backs. Subverted given he nonchalantly points out he's faced and killed worse before.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Modeus expresses confusion at Wendy's Edolas counterpart being visibly older than her.
  • Martial Pacifist: Modeus maintains that he is a pacifist, yet is willing to step and and fight to rescue his friends. He also proves capable of easily dispatching the royal soldiers sent after them even as he apologises for doing so.
  • Mr. Exposition:
    • Edolas Fairy Tail fill the Earthland members in about Nelo Angelo and the declining magic levels in Edolas.
    • Agni and Rudra inform the non-demon members of Fairy Tail that the seal keeping Mundus locked up is strong enough to hold out against all the wizards of Earthland, assuring them he won't get out.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Twice from Natsu.
    • First, when the group discusses what Dante's opposite would be like, he displays the scar on his chest and coldly notes they already met him, Vergil.
    • Again when Lisanna decides to accompany them, briefly freaking out and having to remind himself it's not his Lisanna.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Instead of staying with Edolas Fairy Tail, Lisanna joins the mission to save everyone.
    • Natsu does not get a magic item with fire powers, continuing to use Agni and Rudra.
  • Properly Paranoid: Erza Knightwalker and Coco don't trust Nelo Angelo because he just showed up and started aiding them while asking for nothing in return and he's scary respectively. Given he's actually a servant of Mundus looking to conquer Edolas, their concerns are right on the money.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: The Edolas squad captains are set up as this.
  • Secret Message Wink: Agni and Rudra do this to Natsu while in Lucy Ashley and Lisanna's presence.
  • Seen It All: Trish admits that being sent to Edolas is far from the weirdest thing that happened to her.
  • Smug Super: Dante notes that his lacking an Edolas counterpart makes him one of a kind, and casually states he can handle Erza Knightwalker. The others admit his ego is justified, and he backs up his confidence by demolishing a group of guards sent their way.
  • Troll: Dante quickly starts to enjoy messing with Lucy Ashley the same way he does her Earthland counterpart.
  • True Companions: Despite being warned off by Edolas Fairy Tail, the Earthland members refuse to abandon their comrades.
  • Underestimating Badassery:
    • The Edolas army Captains are dismissive of the notion that anyone could possibly challenge them with the power they have at their disposal.
    • Three random punks thought they could push around Gajeel and Trish... one of them pushes his luck too far by reaching for her chest.
  • Villain Has a Point: Villain to villain example, but Nelo Angelo is spot on with his criticisms of his (temporary) allies' arrogance, warning them against dismissing potential threats.
