Enzo: Do you hear the people sing... singing songs of Lawson's fall!

As the player and Maddie discuss how Mayor Lawson's regime is tearing Concordia apart, they get a call from Constable Ramirez informing them of a murder by the riverbank. There, they find the body of local baker Albertina Thenard stabbed to death.

Tropes:

  • Asshole Victim: Albertina Thenard. What else could she be described as when she benefits from Lawson's regime and sneers at Enzo (her own son) and the resistance, makes money off the backs of the desperate and needy, keeps Colette, a child on as slave labor without even telling the poor girl her mother had passed, looks down on those beneath her like she did with Inspector Jaubert, and forced Adelia to work as a prostitute under threat of losing her baby and didn't pay her one red cent? Yes, Thenard absolutely got what she deserved.
  • Beautiful Singing Voice: One of the killer's attributes is that they can sing. Apparently, every suspect can sing except for Jaubert.
  • Blackmail: Albertina blackmailed Adelia with taking her child away from her if she didn't continue being a slave and sex worker for her. It's the main reason why she killed her.
  • Call-Back: Adelia Baldwin and Inspector Jaubert return as suspects, while Giulietta Capecchi and Marla de Paradis reappear during the Additional Investigation.
  • Children Do the Housework: Albertina forced Colette to slave herself away sweeping the floors of her bakery while supposedly waiting for her mother to look for work, fully knowing she had died.
  • Continuity Nod: The Century Mile Crystal Palace makes a return, now converted into a homeless camp by the homeless people of Concordia.
  • Damsel in Distress: During the Additional Investigation, Katherine gets arrested by the Justice Corps after being captured distributing resistance flyers. What's worse, there will be a mass Public Execution in two weeks with Katherine as one of the intended victims.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Despite being the head of the Lawson's State Sec, Jaubert received little to no respect from Albertina, who constantly mocked him due to knowing him from when he was a poor nobody in his younger years.
  • Evil Chef: Albertina was a local baker who blackmailed people to become slaves for her and refused to provide poor people with bread unless they did her favors or gave their valuable possessions.
Enzo: Mrs Thenard's soul was as black as the dregs of my Château Piquette! She flourished under Lawson's rule!
  • Evil Matriarch: Albertina was this for Enzo, whom she mocked and berated for being part of Lawson's regime.
  • Fallen-on-Hard-Times Job: As a result of her father being murdered and her family disowning her, Adelia was forced to work making deliveries for Albertina with nothing but pieces of stale bread as payment. And that was before she forced Adelia to provide extra services to her clients...
  • Fat Bitch: The victim, notable for being one of the biggest examples of Asshole Victim in the series, was on the heavy side. Enzo even constantly calls her a swine.
Enzo: Each time she came to the homeless camp to sell her bread, I could see she was getting fatter as everyone around her got poorer!
  • Good News, Bad News: Evie tells you this when she discovers the obituary you sent to her was of Colette's mother.
  • Good Samaritan:
    • John Valean, one of the suspects, is a former glass factory manager who, after said factory closed down, decided to take his former employees under his wing and provide them with food while asking for nothing in return, though this quickly turned into Chronic Hero Syndrome as he was forced to sell his possessions and steal from Albertina's bakery to keep providing.
    • Marla has also been donating to the children and poor people of Sinner's End, which according to Evie makes her a legible candidate to adopt Colette and Paris now that they're orphans.
  • Grievous Bottley Harm: The victim was first knocked out with a bottle of wine before being stabbed to death.
  • Hanging Judge: Judge Umbright shows herself to be this at Adelia's trial, figuring Adelia to be a Spoiled Brat and giving her a 15 year sentence for one of the most justified murders in the series.
Maddie: <Player's Name>, I can't believe how unsympathetic Judge Umbright was to Adelia. Only someone Lawson appointed would be so heartless.
  • Happily Adopted: At the end of the case, Marla adopts Colette and Paris after their respective mothers die and get incarcerated.
  • Hates Their Parent: Enzo shows no shame in declaring how he hated Albertina, his own mother, for benefiting of Lawson's regime and mocking La Résistance's ideals.
Enzo: That woman may have been my mother, but I hated her and everything she stood for!
I even changed my name because I wanted nothing to do with that greedy woman who mocked the resistance's ideals!
  • Hate Sink: The more you learn about Albertina, the more you see the loathsome waste of fat and skin she was, and why everyone in the case seemed to despise her.
  • I Have No Son!: Adelia tells you that her family disowned her for getting pregnant out of wedlock and thus has nowhere to go or leave her son.
  • Homeless Hero: Enzo Jonas, one of the suspects, is a homeless young man who also works as part of La Résistance against Justin Lawson.
  • Impoverished Patrician: As a result of Lawson's regime, a lot of people in Concordia have become homeless due to Lawson imposing fines for even the pettiest of reasons, forcing factories and establishments to close down. The most notable case is Adelia Baldwin, who used to be the rich daughter of Concordia's police commissioner before he was murdered.
Maddie: I do feel bad for all those people. They just want to eat. Lawson's rule has truly turned this city for the worse.
  • Lack of Empathy: Judge Umbright shows a severe case of this during Adelia's trial, who killed Albertina because she threatened to take her son if she didn't work as a prostitute for her.
Judge Umbright: Miss Baldwin, the facts are clear to me! A spoiled young lady with no father nor husband, and a child out of wedlock, murdered a high-standing citizen of Concordia!
I see no reason to discuss this further! I'm sure Mayor Lawson will approve of me sentencing you to 15 years in jail!
  • Law of Inverse Fertility: Marla tells you she always wanted to have children, but an illness made her infertile.
  • Made a Slave: Both Colette and Adelia got turned into slaves by Albertina, forcing them to work for her with little to no pay.
  • Mama Bear: Adelia couldn't just leave Albertina's employ because she had threatened to take away her son Paris. This drove Adelia to kill her.
  • Missing Mom: Colette had been living in Albertina's bakery sweeping floors supposedly waiting for her mother, who left to look for a job in the meantime. However, she ended up dying from consumption, something Albertina kept hidden from her.
  • Offscreen Breakup: Actually Subverted regarding Isaac and Marla, who seem to still be in a relationship (or at least not having officially broken up) despite not speaking for months due to Isaac still resenting her for sleeping with Mayor Castletown.
  • Public Execution: In the Additional Investigation, you discover Mayor Lawson is planning one of these in the form of a mass execution for his political prisoners, which includes Katherine.
  • Race Against the Clock: The Flying Squad is given just two weeks to prevent the mass Public Execution from happening and save Katherine.
  • Riches to Rags: Adelia ends up destitute because she couldn't pay for her house after her father got killed and she got disowned by her family.
  • Sex Slave: Albertina forced Adelia to become a prostitute for her clients after one of them suggested she should provide "extra services," threatening with taking her son away if she didn't comply.
  • Shout-Out: The whole case is one to Les Misérables:
    • The victim is based on Madame Thénardier.
    • Colette is based on Cosette with Marius' last name.
    • John Valean is based on Jean Valjean.
    • Inspector Jaubert is clearly Inspector Javert.
    • Enzo Jonas is based on Enjolras.
    • Adelia’s situation is a clear parallel to Fantine’s, being a destitute single mother forced to work for her child’s well-being.
    • The works of Victor Hugo is used as one of the killer's attributes.
    • Enzo sings a song in the same vein as "Can You Hear the People Sing" while Colette sings to her doll a song based on "Castle On a Cloud". In addition, the case's title comes from the song "One Day More."
  • Struggling Single Mother: Due to both her fiancé and father dying and her family disowning her, Adelia had been struggling with providing for her son Paris since her last appearance, to the point she turned homeless and was forced to work for Albertina.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: Adelia Baldwin killed Albertina because she threatened to take her baby away if she didn’t prostitute herself to the men she delivered bread to. Despite this, Judge Umbright sentences her to fifteen years in prison.
  • Torches and Pitchforks: During the main investigation, a huge mob of homeless and poor people forms outside of the victim's bakery, demanding her bread to be distributed.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Commissioner Baldwin's bludgeon becomes this for her daughter Adelia, which she carries around everywhere to defend herself with.
  • Trespassing Hero: John was caught breaking into Albertina's bakery to steal bread for his people, which got him in trouble with her and almost arrested by the Justice Corps.
  • I Want My Mommy!: Colette cries for her mother when you inform her she died from consumption.
  • Who Murdered the Asshole: Every one of your suspects had reasons to kill Albertina, from forcing Adelia and Colette to work as slaves to mocking Enzo's efforts to bring down Lawson and almost reporting John to the Justice Corps. Even Inspector Jaubert wasn't very fond of her, as she constantly belittled him in his face.
Maddie: But so far we haven't come across anyone with a motive for the murder of Mrs Thenard!
Enzo: You've got it all wrong, <Player's Name>! There's plenty of motive for Mrs Thenard's murder!
Everything's gotten worse... and it was all that swine's fault!
  • Wretched Hive: Thanks to Mayor Lawson's restrictions and fines for even the pettiest things, Concordia is slowly turning into one of these, with an abundant population of homeless and impoverished people growing in the streets.
