Sacred Ground Ruins & Lake Kolomo

Link begins his journey to find his lost memories.

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Expansion: The memories found here are given extra scenes that are not present in the game. For example, the "Subdued Ceremony" features
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Zelda's sealing power isn't her only power. She also is revealed to have Nayru's Love, and later Farore's Wind and Din's Fire along with it.
  • Cerebus Syndrome: This chapter introduces the Yiga Clan. The first Footsoldier he encounters catches completely off guard by revealing his fanatical support to Calamity Ganon. The fight is far more gruesome with blood spraying and spilling everywhere, with his death throes described in much greater detail.
  • Damsel in Distress: Two women get attacked by Silver Bokoblins, forcing Link to save them.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Zelda is briefly flustered seeing a shirtless Link.
  • The Dreaded: The Yiga are introduced here. The owner of the stable reveals and explains their nature and that they don't take kindly to one of their own being killed.
  • Elite Mooks: Link has his first encounter with Silver Bokoblins in this chapter, and while he kills one in a single hit, the other one gives him a much more difficult fight than any other Bokoblin so far.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • Link's past self is established, where he duels and soundly beats a knight, but is kind enough to compliment his opponent's skill and offer him some extra training. He was the same then as he is now.
    • Princess Zelda's unstable control of Nayru's Love and her bare insecurities establish her as feeling like an Inadequate Inheritor to her bloodline's gifts and powers, and seeing Link as a constant reminder of that as spelled out by Urbosa. Her next scene also has her gushing about the Sheikah Slate and the Divine Beasts with noticeably more animation, establishing her love for Sheikah technology.
    • Daruk wanted to give Link all the honors possible to give to him, and has some trouble understanding why Zelda seems to be so insecure and down on herself. This more establishes his entire people as appearing to be Locked Out of the Loop in regards to grand scheme of things, but still being quite smart in their own right.
    • Revali is openly opposed to Link for an ungiven reason, and openly expresses the same sentiment of hostility towards Link, and is also described as quite smug in his demeanor, though a single gesture and a few words from Urbosa get him to stop. He's a Smug Snake who isn't fond of Link but respectful of his other Champions and the princess.
    • Urbosa is shown to be empathetic to Zelda, and a single gesture from her is enough to get Revali to stop verbally bashing Link. She even perfectly reads Zelda's behavior. She commands the respect of her Champions and knows Zelda well enough to know what is going on with her.
    • Mipha says no words at all, but instead quietly observes what is going on. She understands the princess's insecurity, and when Revali disrespects Link, she expresses very subtle anger but still refrains from speaking. She's a quiet demure Proper Lady who nonetheless is no pushover.
    • The Yiga Clan Footsoldier establishes the clan as violent ninja-like people who worship Calamity Ganon and are determined to murder Link.
  • Foreshadowing: Mipha is the only Champion who expresses any anger over Revali's words about Link.
  • Futureshadowing: Link laments that the ancient kingdom that was so afraid of Sheikah technology being used for evil should have just worked to upgrade it to prevent it instead of hiding it away and banning it.
  • Genius Bruiser: Link makes a suggestion that it isn't too late to learn from mistakes of the past, and that they could have just upgraded technology to protect the kingdom from its dangers instead of hiding it. Zelda is surprised at how intelligent Link really is.
  • Instant Expert: According to Link and Zelda, Mipha mastered her Divine beast very easily.
  • Irony: Revali calls Link a "boy" when in reality, Revali's far younger than he is.
  • Neutral Female: Averted. The two women Link is saving try to help him fight the second Silver Bokoblin by throwing rocks and branches, which works to distract it enough for Link to kill it.
  • Pet the Dog: Not that Zelda is a mean person, but she genuinely compliments Link's intelligent suggestion by saying that more people like him should have lived in ancient times, and goes further by saying that if they had, they could have had more Divine Beasts.
  • Precision F-Strike: Link drops the first f-bomb in this chapter after killing a Yiga Clan member who tried to kill her.
  • Rasputinian Death: The second Silver Bokoblin suffers extensive injuries, any one of which would have already killed a Red or Blue Bokoblin.
  • Shirtless Scene: Link has two, one during his duel, and the other when he's alone with Zelda sunbathing nearby to her when they're passing through the Lake Kolomo area.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: The two women Link saves give him a life-saving potion as thank you, but they also contextualize the Guardians' behavior. They tell him that they hadn't been like this before, and they describe that it's almost like they're looking for something.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Zelda was surprised by Link suggesting that the kingdom of old should have just upgraded Sheikah technology to prevent problems instead of burying it, not so much that he said something smart, but that this is what came to his mind.
  • Throwing Down the Gauntlet: Link has an honorary duel with a fellow knight before his official appointment as Zelda's knight.
  • Unbreakable Weapons/Breakable Weapons: A realistic balance is struck. Link's weapons are not as easy to break as they are in the game, but they still need to be taken care of to keep from breaking, a service offered to him by a metalworker.
  • Wham Line: Link encounters a stranger when Calamity Ganon has another manifestation around the castle who gives the following speech that really ramps up the tension:
Calamity Ganon wants to right the wrongs of the past. Destroy the remains of a pathetic and ungrateful Hyrule. He will spare those who help him to right those wrongs. I can see that you’ve trained your body well. Please join us. Join the Yiga Clan.
